you're going to need two meters of fabric so when you have your two meters of fabric i'll get you to fold it in half lay it out flat on a table and you're going to cut it in half so just go along the edge with your scissors and cut it so once you have your two pieces um one is going to be the front and one is going to be the back so i'm going to get you to put your folded edges together and line up your fabric together if you have a cutting board and a cutting tool this part's going to be a lot easier but if you don't you can just measure it with a ruler and then cut with your scissors okay so we're going to mark out where we're going to cut for the waist because a ribbon skirt isn't really fitted it doesn't have to be too perfect it's not meant to be really form-fitting i usually make my skirts cut at the 14 inch marks if it's quite a bit bigger person maybe you'll go up to 18 inches if it's a little girl maybe like a younger teenager maybe 12 inches i'll put my folded edges on one side and cutting out at the 14 mark i'm going to cut about four inches down so at the 14 one two three four okay now i'm gonna move down to the bottom of the skirt we cut the top at 14. so i'll cut the bottom at 17. they start here 1 to 17 and i am just going to cut up in a straight line so maybe like four or five inches okay now that you have the top and the bottom so this would be the bottom of the skirt and that would be the top now you're just gonna try make the meat so i i know this part can be tricky especially if you don't have a big cutting mat so you just kind of want to you know a gradual meeting from this cut edge to this cut edge so now that you have your fabric laid out you can plug in your iron because we're going to be using that soon okay for the next step you're going to need to measure out where you will be starting with your first ribbon so i usually i start from the bottom and i mark out um 10 inches is where i start so i'm gonna put a little pen mark on the very edge of one side of my fabric and then on the other side so in your sewing packages you should have a roll of tape it's um it's called heat n bond you can also get a different type of heat and bond at walmart it doesn't have a peel-off backing but it would also work if if this isn't available because this tends to run out at martyrdoms here so i'm gonna go um where i put my first pen mark and then line it up to the second pen mark you're just gonna lay it flat and you're gonna iron it on okay then you're gonna peel off the backing so you're gonna start with your first ribbon you're going to line it up over top of the adhesive when i'm cutting my ribbons i usually leave a little tiny bit on the other a little tiny bit hanging on the edge and when we do the second side of the skirt you'll see one and if you would like spaces between your ribbons you're just going to have to measure out the space like we did with the first row so when you're lining up your ribbons an ideal um an ideal ribbon would line up on the edges without any overlap but i know that that can be hard to do okay now that we've finished laying out all the ribbons and ironing them on one side we're going to flip the two sides of the skirt over onto the other side because we can see the ribbon on this side we don't have to measure we just need to make sure that our our ribbons line up to the edges that we see sticking out okay so now that we have our ribbons ironed down on both sides you can you can unplug your iron because we're going to be done with it for a while and we're going to move on to the actual sewing machine part okay so when you're sewing down your ribbons you can either sew down each individual ribbon on the edge just with a straight stitch but i prefer to sew down the ribbons with a zigzag stitch so i do a zigzag and then when i'm doing the middle um ribbons i can zoom if your sewing machine doesn't have zigzag you can just still just use a straight stitch and it will look nice so you're going to put your foot down and you're going to find the zigzag setting on your sewing machine so when you get to the the end of your row you could um you know lift your foot up and cut your strings but i personally just like to start with my next my next side just so there's no waste of thread so when you get to the end you can cut the thread between your other side and just start on another row so when we're sewing down these ribbons you're going to have to try make your zigzag hit both ribbons on each stitch just so that it doesn't lift if you make a mistake you can always back up or just ignore it and keep going okay so now that you have the ribbon all of the ribbon sewn down on both sides of the skirt um at this point if you were going to put on an applique this is the the point when you would do it so if you're unfamiliar with what applique is this is an example of applique it's just sewing a picture or you know it could just be a flower or shapes onto the skirt okay so when you're ready to put your skirt together you're going to put the good sides of the skirt together with the ribbons facing each other you're going to line up the ribbons because if the bottoms don't perfectly line up it's okay you can trim them but if the ribbons don't line up that'll be more noticeable if if you feel more comfortable pinning it you could pin down the side each side of the skirt just so it doesn't move and you feel more confident while you're sewing and you're going to do the same thing on the other side if you have access to a serger you can search the edges and that just gives it a more professional looking finish so if you see this edge just looks a lot neater okay so now that we've got um both sides of our skirt both edges um sewn down we're going to be using our iron again to do the seams so just plug that in and get it heated up so while your skirt is still inside out we're going to hem we're going to iron the hem about an inch this side and then i just make sure that they match each other at this point you can also um fold it again to iron to iron another edge so because i'm sewing a red dress i have changed the reds right on the top and i also change the bobbin to red thread because that's the part that's going to show on the outside of the skirt okay so now that we've got a nice um hem we're gonna work on the waist so what you're gonna need to do is get your elastic and measure it around your waist or whoever's waist you're gonna be using um and you know cut it but cut with um about an inch extra okay so now that you've cut your elastic to the size you need it you're gonna fold it in half um you're gonna sew down the edge here with about a half an inch of seam width now open that open that seam up and you're going to press it flat and then you're going to sew these edges flat as well so i don't know if you can really see what i'm trying to do here but you're going to sew it sew this flat down too so when you get to the end just gonna lift up your foot and you're gonna just kind of make a box make a make a big rectangle around the edges of this elastic and this is just to you know really reinforce this seam okay so now that we've got our our um our waist we stand sewn okay so you're gonna fold it on the seam and when you get to this side so this is the um the ugly side i guess it's not the good side that would be showing on the outside of your skirt i want you to mark it with a pen or something that you know just that you're going to be able to see maybe maybe you would use a pin i just mark it with a pen though okay so then you're gonna put this part that you marked to the middle of this and i want you to put put a mark on this fold and the same with this one so the reason that i'm doing this is when we're lining up the elastic onto the skirt because we've cut the skirt on this fold you're going to just naturally have kind of a marker for the middle of the front and the middle of the back and the each edge each corner edge so when we are pinning down our elastic it will be easy for us to line up you know the back seam with the front and the side and the side okay so for this last part of the putting the waistband on you're going to turn your skirt inside out or with the good side out i mean and just off camera i had searched the top of this skirt with the good side facing down match it up with the middle um the middle of the back so you should still be able to see the the old folded edge you're gonna put that together so i'm gonna start with a few back and forth just to really um lock in that spot the first pen mark is right here so we're gonna match it up right here to our side seam so we're going to just hold it if you feel more comfortable pinning it you can put a pin there and you're just going to stretch the elastic out to um [Music] i'm gonna go down to this side match it up with the middle of the front of the skirt so you're going to match those two spots together [Music] okay you're going to find your next pen mark so mine was right here and i'm going to match that up with the other side seam [Music] and we're done thank you for watching
