in a row [Music] welcome back to Tour de France beyond the podium I'm Sam Julie here with bridge bookwalter for a moment there I nearly forgot the name of this show I was going to call it welcome back to the Jasper Phillips yeah three for three in the Sprints Jasper Phillips and another uh what can you say about him he's he's got the team pretty well dialed we saw today and then he's still just he's so fast he's so fit he's got the the really today it was like I said in our post race show the timing and the Poise and the patience to sort of realize that his lead out man Matthew Vanderpool was a little early on the front still keep the speed momentum but just hold off and launching the Sprint a little too early yeah when and when when vanderpost swung off there or stopped he basically ran out of energy ran out of legs it was still so so far to go to the finish line like to have the composer to actually just scrub the speed like not many sprinters would go I'm gonna have to scrub some speed here slow the whole bunch down because you know that at that point you ask for Phillips and second wheel there's 174 bike riders behind them you know that somebody's coming fast it's in the perfect position but just a little too early and as we see at those speeds with this competitor Springfield that really can be the margin between making it happen or not but like he said in his post race interview he arrives there so fresh and perfectly positioned he has not used an effort yet so he really has 100 of his finishing Sprint to unleash when he does and they're they're a little bit short there Jonas Rickard stung off just under 1K to go and he asked for Phillips in there behind much of anaphyl in the blue he has the Phillips we're in the green jersey that he was smart to get on the Borah train there a little bit just to get a few hundred meters out of him but he was forced to start his lead out far too early when you've only got one guy left you need to be you need to be starting a couple hundred years later but he had no choice there he did his best to go as long as he could with Joseph Phillips in their second wheel and you have not even in the picture at this point but then we see him as that as that he does Vanderpool is about to swing off that paper yeah and Kev goes that was a good move by Kathy had to do it it's a long way to go to the Finish Line still but he had the momentum from behind he had to use it otherwise he was gonna he was just going to stay where he was and I mean except the Cavendish of old he would have won that stage by five links but Jasper Phillips and he's just he's just proven his dominance he's proving like we said that he's capable of winning Sprints in all different situations and you can see here existed exactly where vanderpol stops and Phillips insisted I can't go yet it's too early the speed stops the bunch comes Kev comes with speed oh how about this move from from Phillipson though pumping binium off the wheel a cab like that it was close I think evinium would have been actually really glued on Cap's wheel I'm not sure Phillips Phillipson had got could get in there but he actually wasn't glued on the Cav and yeah that that allowed Phillips and uh to keep that momentum and almost like it's like a little slipstream off cab before he came around him yeah speaking of what what uh yesterday Phillipson the the nut Jordan Binion fighting for Cavendish as well I mean he had two options there was either go hit to head with Cavendish and Phillips I'm sorry yeah Jacobson Phillips in his tennis um Phillipson had he he had two options there was either open a Sprint Wing cave open to Sprint and go hit the head next to each other and in that situation I would still back Phillipson over over Cavendish but probably he would have got beaten by somebody else probably been in gemmai he would have got the run off Cavendish but then but he had to uh he had to he had to get in the wheel to give himself a little bit of a breather there and he put his Jeremiah off the wheel he pushed him off the wheel and the social the social media what do you call them right after the pundits The Observers the journalism they they've gone crazy and and we believe there's been a pro there was even a protest about that and at least at least the social media protests about the after phillipson's you see him here as well just comes at the speed Phillipson looks across sees the opportunity I've got to get on Cavendish as well I need to get that little bit of you know another 15 years 100 meters but Benham gamai is almost already there Phillipson says no I want that wheel as well you can see him how close is the barriers he's leaning to the left that's the guy on third wheel there from International he got squeezed there's no doubt he got squeezed there by Jasper Phillipson and lost a lot of momentum but in my opinion that's that's sprinting 101. that's there's nothing wrong with with drawstring for position and and it's easy for people to focus on what happens inside the last couple of hundred meters there you know the cameras on them there's the last three or four guys competing for the line it's easy to to go oh he deviated from his line or he squeezed man if you had a camera on the middle of the Peloton for the last five kilometers of that place you would see you would see far worse than that actually far away from that and then and philipson had the right to to try to jostle for position okay the barriers are there and you can argue that his squeezed but these guys are constantly squeezing each other and did it might there's nothing wrong with that yeah it was tight it was definitely it was it was definitely tight but at no point was Phillipson even next to Gourmet he was always in front he was always he was always had the Sprint and when you compare these pictures that people start throwing on the internet after the stage they'll show you this picture where he is on the left and then they'll match it up when he's when he's on the the barriers the next minute but Phillipson is anticipating the Sprint or he's he's actually feeling it and following cavendish's wheel and actually look can we go back a little bit on that please just a little bit further if you look here look Cavendish comes he's got Kevin is his wheel here Phillipson is on Kevin's as well gamaya is on the inside of K and here is actually where Philipson's in the line he's in he's in the line behind Cavender she's allowed to be there gemai gamai has actually been squeezed because there's no space he's not being squeezed because the line has been deviated any more than you could argue that Cavendish is the one who went to the right and and philipson is just following kevinist we can dissect this in a million different ways but the clutching at straws if they think that that's the problem if Astana and vinegar was in their protesting or intermarshas and they're protesting they're they're just they're clutching at straws Phillipson just beat them and they could they can't beat them anymore for sure a lot that's sick grandma would be frustrated and inner Marche because he was on a good day he showed at the intermediate Sprint he was really fast and then he's truly in the mix in the finish so frustrated to lose that opportunity and then Cav also I think for Cav I can't see him wanting to get this historic win through a protest but when you're Alexander vinegar off and you're you just have the the jersey and the name you don't really care how you get it you just want that history and you want to be part of it so fortunately I think we I think the the fastest guy the guy that executed one okay no side I think that the tostana and whoever protested and I think they're clutching its Shores if if I was the sports director of intermarshe or the sports director of um Astana I wouldn't have protested I would have probably oh I probably would have got on the bus and watched it and gone like ah you know all right like because you're always biased to your own team you always buy us to your own team for sure the alperson sports director stood on the bus going what are they what are they about if you're Alexander vinegar off and Astana or even vinium gourmet's team director you're also looking at Jasper Phillips and going how are we going to beat this guy we can't beat him like and then you do just like you just described you start grasping at straws which is a little bit of what they did and there was a little bit there there was enough enough there for for someone to go oh maybe I can find a bit of a loophole here into chucking no talking to protesting but I got squashed very quickly because when you when you actually sit down and reflect on it and watch it over and over again like we've had the luxury to do just now I mean there'll be someone out there that says oh he should be relegated but there's people out there who said he should have been relegated on the first stage as well if he should be relegated he would get relegated at the end of the day yeah they're looking at yeah they know what they're looking at and they've seen you know they've seen more Sprints than I have they've rehashed more experience than I have for sure another thing that strikes me about this Sprint though is that you can with Jasper Phillips and that that move to go with Cav and that patience uh before that is like this you see this winning mentality this winning be getting more winning in play it's like he is like literally hard wiring himself to just win more and it's like almost he is like a tractor beam just like sucked into the path that's gonna present him the chance to win I mean it knows how to win it's really yeah it's impressive it's going through all of that Cavendish minimum gamai barriers squeezing sprinting Phillipson Kev was sick in today he was he um yeah he had us we were standing up I was like oh he's gonna do it and I know Phil yeah Phil's calling it was was exciting um he's clearly he was excited picking Cav every day um but after the Finish we you know I saw Kev like you said the old Cav would have would have made it happen there okay the old cable would have won by five links he he had the jump he had the Speed he stood up he's sprinting and then he actually sits down and so I'm thinking like he doesn't you know the legs ran out he his accelerations from getting into position maybe are adding up but then after the Finish we hear right away he's saying I was in the 11 it's slip to the 12 I had to sit down then it went back into the 11th flipped to the 12. I have never ever heard of a train slipping upwards from the 11. he didn't he just ran out of legs and I understand why he ran out of legs he was in the wind for a long time back there you know he didn't like it like we said time and time again he hasn't got the team to deliver him so he was in the wind he had to find his own way so you think he was in the eleven the whole Sprint I don't know what Gary was on it doesn't matter what Gary was when he wasn't fast enough but he he he just ran out of legs he sat down because he he ran out of legs essentially I mean he looked disappointed at the finish and maybe it's maybe something did happen but regardless of whether he was in the 11 or 12 he'd lost by three you got my heart pump and I think I still think he can do it of course he do let's see if we can see his uh let's see if we can see any gears slipping it's so hard I mean they're going so fast it's going all right he's looking it right out of the saddle here she looks across he sees Phillips and coming he knows at this point that he's not going to get the jump like he used to this is where he sits down just up here I think after so there's philipton again yet again no problem there there he said he does look is he is he looking at his legs or his chin back let's back this up let's pick this up and have a look just here there he is let's have a little look at this again he looks down well yeah I don't know Maybe maybe Brent it's definitely happening at the speed a fraction of this yeah but yeah I don't know if he if it's hard to know if he's looking down and you know sprinters are known to look underneath their arm to see if someone's coming I think at that at that point there he's looking to see if someone's coming which is Phillipson but yeah there could be an issue I don't know I'm sure we'll hear about it but um either way either way we're in tight stand by the fact that he would have he would have he would have got beaten by Phillipson it might have been a little bit closer but Phillipson was coming too quick he was coming too far too quick but like you say I got the heart pumping Kevin this was when he first went when he first went yeah you can't tell if he's you see from the head on there you can't tell really if there's a slippage or not but he can see the disappointment if it did happen though mechanically he oh without that he's hit the bump roll that forward now you see that oh you see no no here just on the at The Pedestrian Crossing no here he hits a bump all right there's two bumps and then here on the speed bump here that's when he sits down oh that's when you sat down for the second time I don't know I feel like we're talking about tucking up straws earlier I feel like we are right now there's a this seems like uh he's he's another shot yeah and he won't win them it won't probably won't be tomorrow no tomorrow's gonna be a hard stage but I I'm encouraged by Cavendish and again we've had this discussion like do I think he's going to do it no do I want him to do it yeah but he's getting closer but the thing that's going to stand in cavendish's way and to be fair with the exception of Phillipson uh he's almost been the most consistent guy he's he was sixth in fifth and second he's always there or thereabouts and and the leader the the stage results on these Sprint stages are changing quite a lot you know they're quite quite a dynamic field these guys like Luca mozarta who you wouldn't have picked in there Cavendish is always there or there about he's doing a really good job the thing that's going to stand in cavendish's way is just it's just Phillipson he he needs something to go wrong for Phillips and philipson needs to get bumped off he needs to be too far back lose position he needs to have a mechanical himself something needs to happen to Phillips and I think where Kevin is to have a good chance that yeah that I think that's the same case for our GC battle too like we don't we're on a Sprint stage now and we maybe have another one or a breakaway stage tomorrow but I think what you just said Cavendish needs Phillips to have a bad day I think when you're looking at our two best GC guys after we thought about the past couple days more that's almost how I feel like the GC is going to be decided as well is it's as much about someone's bad day or faltering is capitalizing on a strong day yeah exactly and we'll say that on Sunday when we get to the next GC day but tomorrow is going to be a very interesting day I think one one thing I noticed noticed today and and I was completely wrong of course at the start of the start of the broadcast today I said for sure wolf went out it's going to Sprint today you didn't agree with me and you were right I was wrong he didn't he set up with like 5K to go or something it's tailgun um and you say that he's he's trying to save save energy for the goal of working for your owner's finger go which you could well be right and makes complete sense to make complete sense but I think he's going to have a crack tomorrow the stage tomorrow to Limoges it's a very interesting stage it's it's a Sprint of sorts or it's potential Breakaway there's there's a couple of things at play here and if you look at the route it starts in labor and it goes essentially North to Limoges it's a 200k stage it's a longer stage tomorrow and the the first part of the profile is very flat it's similar to what we saw today and in the previous Sprint stages but when you look at the profile in the last half of the stage the last 75k the stage that's not easy there's three categorized climbs there in the last 75k it kept three four Cat four very close to the finish line and just because there's only three categories climbed it doesn't mean it's flat between those those little lumps you can see in the profile the little shark's teeth there that decent little climb one or two cake climb three or four minute climbs it's a grippy little final and that that that does it can favor a breakaway or strong Breakaway I think there'll certainly be teams interested in being in the Breakaway things would have to go their way for it to be successful but it's not it's not off the cards uh but otherwise the last the last one kilometer of Tomorrow stage it's not a flat screen it's not like it was in Bordeaux today next to that speeds will be lower muddy river yeah more on the legs there's 800 meters at five percent like it's a very very hard Sprint it's going to take sprinters out of the out of contention it's maybe too hard for a growing a wig and it's maybe too hard for jakobson it's pretty good for Phillipson it's pretty good for uh Caleb Ewing it's pretty good for brilliant gamai very good for walking out Peterson maybe he's been hunting around the team's been putting effort into it but uh going back to the initial point I think that wolfenat was having a breather for tomorrow well he deserves a breather after two days out on the hunt most aggressive most combative two days in a row so if his legs weren't hurting today I don't there's something off with the guy yeah there's no doubt they were hurting and but he's still you know this guy's a freaky so he still could have sprinted today if he wanted to and he and he's 6K to go he's just he's parked it with the with the other guys about interesting I've done being a part of the part of the Finish but I I truly believe that and I could be wrong again because I was wrong this morning and when I was wrong this morning it wasn't the first time I get my pick before you today so maybe I'll pick him or maybe you're just luring me into a fight yeah that's it yeah with Ben air here no I am I'm losing your own wolf and now it's going to win tomorrow if you don't pick him whoever doesn't as a fool but no seriously I think it's a very very good finish from tomorrow and I and I I think he'll have a crack I think that if I was young by visma they came here with two goals they came here to win the Tour de France was Jonas wingerco they came here to win a stage and Wolf Van art wants to win a stage he he makes it for sure he makes it clear he would have said to him I want to win a stage and tomorrow is the best chance for him to win a stage without the team and without wolf van out having to exert too much energy but it's got to unfold that way like at the start I think they have to they're not going to go to the kilometers zero jumbo vizma and say we're controlling for Van air today and we're lining up the team I mean they already have the yellow jerseys they're going to be up there switched on but they're not going to use a bunch of Firepower to bring a break break back from him so they're going to need some cooperation and collaboration from the other teams that you just mentioned um Peterson perhaps Caleb's team uh perhaps binium gurmeier's team and then at the end of the day it's it goes back to this situation of how motivated collectively the bunches what teams really have to force a breakaway tomorrow as you know one of their only channels I think the the thing that you've had an out on the head did that there's going to be teams interested in the Breakaway because there is a possibility the Breakaway can succeed tomorrow and there's teams that have writers that are very good at winning from stages like this Magnus caught from EF he's one guy that comes to mind so the stage is going to be very different to what it was today the Breakaway is going to going to take some time to go it could be 10K 20K it could even be 30 or 40K until the Breakaway goes if that happens if it goes for that long then the Sprint there's good guys in there for starters and the Sprint teams that are trying to control the start the teams of Albertson Lotto Destiny of katabulin uh been in gamai's team at intermarshe trick with Peterson these teams that are trying to control the start it takes a lot of effort and a lot of energy and eventually the Breakaway goes at strong guides it's a bigger group and they're actually a little bit pinned and they need a bit of time before they can actually start controlling the stage to start dictating the time Gap so that gives the Breakaway a chance to go out take some time if it's strong guys if it's five six seven ten guys then it's hard to bring it back yeah and you're right that that jumbo won't do that they won't be part of that they'll probably be saying look you know we've got to leave that to the other teams but again to my point I think it's the best chance for wolven out to win a stage without Yambo visma having to kill himself so if I was them I'd be going I'd be going around the buses or I'll be getting on the phone tonight I'd be calling up the sports director from Trek I'd be calling up the sports director from alperson I'll be calling up the sports director from into Martian and I'd be saying look guys we're not going to help you control the start but once the Breakaway is gone we'll give you one guide to ride on the front we'll give you a guide right on the front you guys all put another guy there as well all of a sudden you've got four or five teams with one or two guys there you've got six or seven guys eight guys controlling the Breakaway and then wolf Bernard has a correct on a bunch yeah and then if once he ticks that box and gets that win the understanding would be back to working for his leader he on his finger yeah of course and then that that's a if if you have a content and please and satisfied about you know argue that that is an even more powerful asset to have than someone who's still yeah gets unfinished business get the monkey off the back click the elephant out of the room yeah rather analogy you want to use related to animals but I think we're gonna we're gonna find out either way it's gonna be this is the first stage of this nature that we've seen this year where it doesn't have a ton of climbing chucked in only for Mountain guys sprinters still have a chance guys who maybe aren't the fittest in the bunch but super crafty and can get a little luck on their side also have a chance so you know potentially a stage for you know where a mere mortal can also shine with a little luck and Magic yeah I'm looking forward to and I'm I'm gonna go for walk Bernard or am I am I just trying to suck you into the NBC Studio my official pick will come tomorrow we'll find out tomorrow we're looking forward to it it's gonna be a good stage tomorrow and we're going to have a good start at least a good start with the Breakaway trying to establish itself as well an exciting finish so we'll see you all afterwards tomorrow after stage eight see you later
