[Music] story time we can't trash taste what is the secret to our success is a question we get asked at every [ __ ] interview i swear to god yeah every time we get interviewed for a magazine or an article or something even if it's included in the final version or not we get asked this question and every single time the three of us look at each other and go well we don't [ __ ] know so today i thought i'd take some time to reflect on the journey we've had tell a bit of the origin story to add to the trash taste law and really try to answer that question myself so let's start right at the beginning which i don't really know where the beginning is you want the long version or the short version so for disclaimer all of this is from my perspective so the other boys might have a different insight of what happened but from what i remember i've always wanted to start another podcast if you didn't know i had a podcast before called potaku which unfortunately ended and ever since that ended i always wanted to make another podcast with other people but for me personally i knew that if i was going to make another podcast it needed to be a step up from what i did before so i wasn't going to start one unless it was on camera in person and not a recorded skype or discord call which is what my previous podcast was so as you probably know i was friends with connor and joey for a while by now we'd done a bunch of collabs together we'd hung out on and off camera pretty much every opportunity we had the chance to and the idea of a podcast was i think floated around a bunch of times when we'd hung out but nothing concrete actually came out of it until ax 2019 which is when i would say was the concrete birth of trash taste because on the last day of ax that was the day that the contract was finalized with me connor and sydney to be able to move to japan and i remember we were having dinner with the all of us and the then founders of geeks plus so melin was there we'd finalized everything and we walked out and just this wave of emotion hit me as i've realized [ __ ] i'm actually moving to japan and i remember turning to connor and joey and being like guys we can finally do that [ __ ] podcast because i remember at the moment for me i've realized that somehow all the stars had aligned for me to be able to do the podcast i had originally wanted to after potaku had ended and then that was that me conor and sydney moved to japan we were settling in we were getting used to the japanese lifestyle everything was going great and then the pandemic happened and then literally everything got put on hold but that didn't stop us from trying to do all the work we could to get this podcast going because at this point trash taste was just an idea and it wasn't even called trash taste it was just untitled anime podcast so our first job was pitching this idea to geeks plus because while we were going to front most of the initial cost for the equipment and the setup and everything that we needed we needed their help in getting a place and renting out a studio because if you haven't heard the stories from trash taste just renting out an apartment for ourselves was a hard enough job so we definitely needed the help of a company to set this all up and i remember the three of us had to prepare this pitch and as unprofessional as we see him now we went full [ __ ] business mode for this pitch man i remember joey wrote like this entire proposal and then translated it into business japanese thank [ __ ] god joey isn't the hungo jozu and then we had to go in and [ __ ] pitch it was like an episode of dragon's den or [ __ ] shark tank or whatever and so in this meeting room when we're going through this pitch going through the proposal and basically trying to explain how three idiots talking about anime could be a sustainable business plan and i remember during this pitch we said that we aimed to get a hundred thousand subscribers within a year which i know is ridiculous in hindsight it's so ridiculous in hindsight that i remember i think we reached that within a week of us launching and after we reached that i remember melin coming to us and was like were you bullshitting us because we had smashed the target we had put in that proposal so [ __ ] hard that they literally thought we lied but i swear to god we didn't okay because look to explain myself because everyone thinks we've really undershot our targets at the time we were just anitubers and anitube as a whole had failed to like grasp the wider youtube audience outside of our own bubble so we were comparing our numbers to other big anime podcasts that existed at the time like i think rant cafe was just about 100 000 subscribers at the time not only that but we looked at a lot of larger creators and their podcast and saw the ratio between their main channel and their podcast channel and we kind of extrapolated that data to kind of try and approximate the same numbers that we could expect you know it's kind of easy to say looking back that of course you guys were gonna do well it's the three biggest annie tubers or whatever we gotta understand that now trash t's views rival our own main channels and that's really [ __ ] rare for a podcast to be able to do that and i still think it is pretty rare so now melin we didn't lie that was our honest prediction screw you you're fired so luckily after that everything got approved so our next job was thinking up a name now in regards to the name we knew that we were going to market ourselves as an anime podcast but we kind of wanted the opportunity to talk about everything but anime as well in case you know we uh ran out of anime to talk about so with that general idea in mind i kind of went off and brainstormed any terms or names i could think of that were vague enough that it kind of had something to do with the anime community but also was vague enough that it could be about well just about anything because i remember joey saying guys i'll be honest don't let me name the podcast because i'm probably going to call it the anime podcast or something along those lines so i went off and i came back to the boys with three names the salt room because well salt is an integral part of the anime community and i had an inkling that there was going to be a lot of arguments and salt on the podcast which you know there kind of is men of culture because well we are men and we are cultured most of the time and of course trash taste i remember pitching these three names to the boys and we all unanimously agreed that trash taste wouldn't be the name yeah i can't remember exactly why but i think the initial reaction was we weren't sure if we wanted to have the term trash so ingrained in our branding because we didn't know if we wanted such a negative connotation with our podcast so we were picking between the salt room and men of culture and then i remember we all went to sleep and then we woke up the next day and we were like you know what trash taste is a pretty good name looking back i can't think of another name that more perfectly encapsulates what the podcast is about so i have nightmares where i have flashbacks where we wake up the next day and we still unanimously agreed that we wouldn't name our podcast trash today so thank god we weren't [ __ ] idiots so our next challenge was finding and building a studio and luckily geeks plus came in clutch and found us a pretty good apartment so our first studio wasn't actually a studio it was just a soundproof apartment that was built for musicians that we redecorated into a recording studio and if you've seen the moving vlog from when we moved to the old studio to the new studio you'd know that it was [ __ ] tiny we chose an apartment that was the bare minimum of what we needed to get this podcast recorded and that's because apartments in tokyo especially soundproof apartments are one really hard to find and two [ __ ] expensive so in fact we had to try and find a studio that was on the outskirts of tokyo just so we could cut back on costs at the time because after we found the apartment we actually had to build the studio and the three of us have no idea what the [ __ ] we are doing i think we left the decision in terms of most of the equipment and stuff to connor because we were like connor you do audio you're on camera sometimes you know what the [ __ ] you're talking about and you know what conor at the time i don't even know if he fully knew what he was talking about because i think a lot of it was just guesswork watching a [ __ ] ton of youtube tutorials ordering the equipment and just hoping that it would work and look good we were trying to emulate some of the biggest podcasts on the platform at the time when we just really did not have the knowledge or know-how to do so and i remember when we were finalizing everything we needed finalizing the rent and all the equipment costs and i was just looking down and i started sweating man like this is more money than any other project i spent on youtube at the time and i wasn't even 100 sure if for when the podcast would start making money and so after all this guesswork we got all the equipment shipped to our studio we spent an entire day building it building the furniture setting up the cameras making sure everything worked i was like hoping to god that it did and luckily conor came through and all the cameras looked great we set up the right angles and the exact moment i knew that we might be on to something was after we were [ __ ] knackered from building the set building the studio we were going to do a quick five-minute camera test to see if mudan could edit it fine so we sit down to talk for five minutes and we ended up talking for 30 minutes and the only reason we stopped was not because we ran out of things to talk about but because at the time the camera that we had had a 30 minute recording limit so we literally just talked till the time limit ran out even though we were just meant to do a quick five minute conversation for just on camera tests of how the studio is going to look and you can see that recording if you want you can go to trashtaste.com patreon um it's our episode zero this wasn't meant to be a shout out but i mean it's there if you want to see it and that's how we got our start we filmed our first few episodes we launched and we completely obliterated our target within the first week as i've already said but i knew that the most important time for trash taste would be the start and getting some momentum going for the channel and so i had an idea where a lot of my ideas come from while i was taking a shower and that was the idea for the figure special and i actually got it because the night before i was for some reason watching clips from avengers end game and avengers infinity war and i remember thinking about the marvel cinematic universe about how every film is a standalone film that also feeds into each other and seeing how well that that worked for endgame and just the [ __ ] mcu in general and so i thought to myself was there a way for us to be able to do this with our own three channels and trash taste and that's where the idea of the figure special came from where you would have our individual channels aka the individual mcu films that could all be enjoyed individually by our own fans and audience that all fed into one bigger project which was our avengers aka the trash taste figure special and so i pitched this idea to the boys they thought it was a great idea i originally thought that we were gonna [ __ ] macgyver our way through and just like have hidden cameras and [ __ ] like that in the store and then connor suggested guys we shouldn't go with full logan paul let's try and get permission nowadays we need like a minimum of a few weeks to really guarantee us getting permission to film in stores as connor and trash taste and joey does for their individual channels but back then melin being the [ __ ] machine that she is somehow got it in four which like looking back i'm just like how the [ __ ] did she do that it was a crazy idea i had in the shower i pitched it to the boys and then the week later we were filming that same idea and i think aside from the initial launch that was also the second project that really got trash case going and the momentum that i needed because looking back at our start now i don't think we could have hoped for a better first five episodes to get the momentum going and really establish what the podcast was about we had the introduction episode we immediately had an episode that was not about anime just to completely establish that this wasn't just going to be an anime podcast even though that's kind of how we marketed it we had the anime episode and then we had the figure episode and then we had our first guest episode with chris which i'm just checking out is our second most viewed episode ever [ __ ] me don't tell chris that he doesn't need another ego boost and so from then on the momentum was there and all we needed to do was stay consistent which was [ __ ] easy because i'm just doing a podcast where i talk to my friends looking back there were a few lucky things that we had going for us that we completely didn't plan at all like we were an in-person podcast while the rest of the world was in a global pandemic where most countries were in lockdown luckily japan wasn't in as strict of a lockdown so we basically had zero competition because most other big established podcasts had had to go to zoom calls or discord calls or something that was remote and the second thing is that obviously they're my mates but we were just three dudes with three different personalities that meshed well with each other for a podcast dynamic and also we came from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures that could give different perspectives for different topics that we talked about you know if i was going to take anything from my journey so far with trash taste a lot of people thought we were bound to succeed because of the size of our individual channels and i don't actually think that's true at all to me i don't think the biggest asset we have now when going forward was our pre-established audience it's having three creators who really understand youtube as a platform equally invested to create something bigger because i would say one of the biggest joys of working with kai and joey is that there is never really an idea too big for them and we all seem to have shared the same vision of what we wanted trash taste to be and the potential it could have been like i remember coming to the boys with this idea for the drifting special because this entire time i had this grand vision that trash taste could be more than just a podcast and for one of the first time in my life i wasn't met with resistance but instead immediate enthusiasm because they were always my friends but now were also co-workers who build on each other's strengths and cover each other's weaknesses because this is just my own perspective about everything that happens but i think we all know that trash tastes wouldn't have succeeded without every single one of us they're saying your normal group project i think we've all in our own way contributed equally to the success that trash taste is seeing right now because irregardless of everything i've just said i think the biggest reason to the success is surprise surprise our genuine friendship you are my nakama you know it might sound predictable and cheesy but as someone who knows a lot of stories about some things that go on behind the scenes in youtube communities and all that genuine friendship is rarer than you think before trash taste we spent far more time hanging out off camera than we did on camera in any of the projects we were involved in and irregardless of how big our viewerships were or how big our audiences were or how many subscribers we had that time was more valuable than anything trash taste right now is far far bigger than any of us ever thought it ever would be but we know that despite that this is just gonna be the beginning and i can't think of a better group of guys that i'd rather be on this journey with and i can't wait for you guys to see what we have planned in the future touch wood that we could actually make it happen so in summary the secret to trash taste is just talk [ __ ] [Music]
