okay so house mark's new aaa rogue like third-person action game return just came out a couple weeks ago and it's pretty fun yeah return all might seem tough at first but with a little help anyone can conquer this game okay maybe not anyone the game is pretty ball busting but hey if i can complete the game multiple times so can you so to help expedite the learning process let me give you a few valuable tips and pieces of information so you too can escape the cycle now quite possibly the most important skill to master in return is being able to clear rooms without taking damage as returnal is a game that heavily rewards perfect play mainly through its use of the adrenaline system adrenaline is gained by killing enemies with every 3 enemies killed upping your overall adrenaline level giving you a new buff each time maintaining max adrenaline is certainly easier said than done however as the slightest bit of damage will drop your adrenaline back to zero but the longer you can go without taking damage the stronger richer and healthier celine will be speaking of things easier said than done another key to success from eternal is maintaining max health as much as possible now having max health is useful in every video game but it's doubly so maternal as any health pickup you find on the ground at full health will instead act as a heart piece of source to increase your overall max integrity pool every 3 pips increases your overall health and the more health packs you can pick up at full health the bigger your hp bar will become but thankfully your skills aren't the only thing that persists through cycles in maternal ether is the persistent currency of the game although instead of being spent as experience points to permanently level up celine ether is primarily used for stronger one-time use items here is exactly what you should be spending your ether on your number one priority for spending your hard-earned ether is at the kethonos the obelisk with the glowing white sphere near the crash site at the cost of a small but growing amount of ether the cthonus will generate a brand new artifact or consumable that you can not only use at the start of that specific run but will also add that item it spawned into the greater item pool for every subsequent playthrough there are some really powerful artifacts like behind the kitthonos too so make sure you're always adding a new item to the item pool on every new cycle while exploring the biomes of eternal chances are you will come across a reconstructor machine at the cost of 6 ether a reconstructor will spawn you back to full hp if you die this is a great way to spend your ether especially when you're just starting out you can also exchange five ether at return shops for 200 avalites the temporary currency that only lasts for the run you're in while it's rare that this trade is particularly worth it those 200 obelites could be the difference between you being able to buy an extra item at the shop or not which goes a long way in this game what you absolutely should never spend your ether on is for cleansing malignant items malignant items are health pickups abolite caches and weapon boxes that have a purple aura around them when you pick up a malignant item there's a chance it could activate a suit malfunction a suit malfunction is a debuff that is applied to selene that can only be removed by completing the specific tasks listed in the top left corner or by consumable and let me just say this as a beginning player it's worth avoiding the risk of suit malfunctions at all cost the functions can range from really annoying to absolutely crippling and fixing malfunctions can also be extremely inconsistent too sometimes the malfunction can be removed in the very next room where sometimes you might be forced to go an entire biome with a malfunction before you have the opportunity to fix it as for items that aren't permanent the most important items you want to collect are artifacts character buffs that last for your entire run along with artifacts you can also find parasites spread throughout the map parasites are more common and work by giving you both a buff and debuff typically you'll want to skip a majority of parasites you uncover as the debuff is rarely worth the gain however there are a few standout examples of artifacts and parasite buffs you should always pick up and purchase when given the chance for one anything that can heal you passively is s tier the artifacts that heals you based on the damage you do multiplied by your adrenaline level can take you from low to max health in one encounter even at adrenaline level one health regen at low health is also incredible too as that can heal enough hp back to allow you to take an extra hit another buff you'll always want is the buff that gives you an extra 25 percent chance for consumables to be saved upon use a 1 in 4 chance is pretty great odds and this could let you get an extra round or two of using a smaller large helix consumable allowing for way more mistakes and of course any parasite that revives you from a killing blow is always worth it regardless of whatever downside it might give you i need to state too that whatever i'm saying here should be taken as no more than a general guideline than absolute law one man's trash is another man's treasure and there are going to be runs of return to where you'll actually want to pick up parasites you would normally skip over or actively seek out gaining malfunctions for dps or health related reasons all depending on the myriad of other items you acquired in your run up to that point which leads us to the most important items of all in return the actual guns themselves the guns are maternal's most complex gameplay element each of the weapons radically vary from one another in terms of how they work and the best way to use them when picking up a new weapon experiment with it to see how to use it effectively sometimes a gun that might seem weak at first can grow to be very powerful for example take the dread bound it's unique in that it's the only weapon in the game that doesn't require reload because the gun fires three gems that return immediately upon hitting the enemy from a far distance it takes a long time for the ammo to come back and if you miss don't even get me started but at point blank range it becomes the fastest best dps weapon in the entire game so experiment to see how you can make the most of the weapon you have on hand and you'll have to do that too because constant weapon switching is key to success from eternal as you kill enemies and pick up blue items you'll level up your proficiency which determines the minimum level of future weapon drops having a higher level weapon means better stats overall which is why it's worth learning all the weapons you'll also want to learn to play with the other weapons to unlock their weapon traits when you unlock a new weapon if you kill enough enemies with it you'll unlock a permanent weapon trait on that weapon these traits can be passive buffs to fundamentally change the way the weapon fires like turning the pistol into a three burst weapon or having the carbine fire slower at the cost of more power pro bullet but killing hundreds of alien tentacle monsters is only half the battle you'll also need to avoid getting slayed yourself avoiding damage in return is as simple as abc always b cruising seriously you'd be surprised at just how many attacks and bullet patterns you can avoid simply by strafing or sprinting out of a sticky situation just make sure you're always moving with some intent otherwise you'll just get stuck running into a wall or fall into a pit and that's never fun also you have access to a dash on the circle button dashing is a get out jail free card as it makes you completely invincible to all bullets and lasers while recharges quickly it's not instant so please do not spam in instances with a lot of mayhem on screen try to avoid dashing until the last possible instance to make sure you'll be in a safe spot when waiting for it to charge back up you'll also want to occasionally glance at the mini map to make sure you aren't surrounded by enemies when it comes to dealing with a room of enemies typically it's worth clearing the room of basic adds before attempting to take out the tougher enemies not only will taking out the adds first boost your adrenaline it can also let you more easily focus on dealing with the tougher enemies of return more intense bullet patterns when it comes to dealing with the higher health enemies staggering them is crucial you can check out how close an enemy is to getting staggered by looking at the bar that fills up under their health bar once staggered they will be unable to do damage as well as take extra damage on their weak point giving you a good opportunity to finish the job do your best to corral the enemies so that you have no enemies directly behind or to the sides of you otherwise you might not see what attack they're going for although thankfully in return you don't always have to see pay attention to audio cues as well as visual ones for certain attacks for example i've seen a lot of people online struggle with these bat enemies in biom1 this is because they are a visual trap most people will dash right when the bat turns yellow but the bat's wind up is longer than the length of the dash and it will hit you in the second its recharging however if you hold for the extra second and wait for the back to make a distinct shriek you'll be able to dodge through just fine every enemy is consistent each baddie has a handful of attacks that consistently work the same way and they won't stray from that for example these flying box enemies in biome 2 will either shoot bullets in an expanding grid pattern or shoot out 3 lasers in the shape of a triangle this is exactly how how smart can demand perfect play from you and get away with it see in return all you need to remember that every single enemy attack isn't just a series of random bullets for the sake of being hard no they are specific handcrafted design pattern that you need to weave through every series of attacks has a strategy to successfully dodge them bosses work the exact same way too they each have a handful of moves they will cycle through in a specific order depending on what phase of the fight you're in there are no random elements in the boss fights themselves save for any buffs to debuffs you might have practice makes perfect and unless you're like me were you totally knocked out volumes four through six on the first go at it chances are these fights are gonna take multiple times of seeing attacks over and over and learning how to counter them but soon enough you'll get to the point where you can consistently knock out whole phases and bosses without taking a hit don't leave any non-malignant health items behind for later use it's always better to work towards increasing your max integrity than trying to scour for health items later in a biome at the shop your priority should always be to pick up the 25 max integrity upgrade the bigger max health you have before picking that up the more health you'll get too so try to hold off until the end of the biome if you can but the golden goose item you'll always want to pick up when you can is the astronaut which will instantly revive celine on death to about half of your max health unlike the reconstructor which responds you in its respective room the astronaut works instantly allowing you to continue fighting a boss fight or a challenge room without having to start from scratch once you obtain the hook shot after biom2 it's worth noting that celine has iframes through the entire hookshot animation so use it liberally to get out of touch situations and to reassess the consumables are a mixed bag in this game but you can never go wrong with holding health consumables always try to have one on you when possible anytime you come across a red bed you can trade some hp for an artifact use the red bed every time as the artifact is usually way more valuable than the small amount of hp you can gain back in the very next room the rotlin gobber gun actually doesn't suck all it takes is one hit and the poison will do the rest for 95 percent of enemies so don't focus on trying to score multiple hits on the same enemy with that weapon a lot of people have issues with these drone enemies online the best way to dodge their missile barrages is to sprint in one direction then dash in the opposite direction this is a good strategy for when there are diagonal horizontal bullet sprays too some enemies will do specific attacks only at certain levels of health for example around 40 percent health the drone enemies will kamikaze into you so make sure you have enough bullets to finish the job when shooting them a good strategy for dealing with this tree enemy is to stagger them and then melee them to death in two 2-3 hits manly does insane damage in this game so use it frequently do not feel the need to hit up every single room on every single run you do while you have to start at the crash site every death you can unlock shortcuts to make your salty runbacks take less time for example once you unlock world 3 you can jump straight there from world 1 and at the start of each biome is a proficiency item that will auto level you to level 5 for biome 2 and level 9 for biome 3 so you won't be absurdly underpowered either with that being said though i recommend really practicing biom1 when starting out by hitting up every room for health and artifact hunting you can clear it in about 12 to 18 minutes after a few goes at it as for ether grinding you get 5 for completing the daily challenge a fun little activity that you can do in the ship as well as 5 for any boss you beat or redefeat and finally you can also sleep once in the bed of the helios per run which will heal a moderate amount of hp and those are all the tips i have about returnal honestly this game is a lot denser than it seems on the surface and it's been an absolute joy uncovering everything that makes this game tick i know the game has gotten some flack online for being too difficult which i mostly find unfounded so hopefully this guide helped you parse some of the stranger elements of eternal if you have a returnal tip that i didn't go over in this video please drop it in the comments below for more guides essays and other equally based
