[Music] so [Music] hi everybody welcome i am misty doan with missouri star quilt company i'm so happy to be with you on this wonderful tuesday i am joined as usual by the fabulous liz hi camera hi liz thanks for being here everybody i i am so excited about today's project i am so excited about this project we have been working on this for a while now i'm so excited to finally share it with you guys i have been working on this adorable alphabet quilt it is a full pattern called easy alphabet it has all of the letters the full quilt that you see here we also threw in some numbers and punctuation so you can let your creativity soar so be sure to check that out it's a wonderful pattern it's available now but for today's project we decided let's use this and make something springy so i made this little joy table runner it's so happy so happy um so this is done using kona solids so we've got all the rainbow brights which i love it's so scrappy and adorable we followed that same scrappy idea but we are using gingham gardens by my mind's eye for riley blake which i have used this collection before and it's just gorgeous i love it and it's perfect for my house actually it very much fits my style very nice so i love this so let's dive into how we do this because it's really quite simple and i'll show you how to make some letters so to start off with for the joy well i guess i should say before we get too far in we've got some great printables yes there's a free printable in the description of this video to show you how to make the word joy and the word spring yes we should probably show them now yeah you know why not why save it for later because it's adorable look at this one oh and it's so cute it's scrappy in the colors we kept the colors together in this one and so it's still different fabrics from the collection but i love having all of the colors so excited about these they're so these are adorable you can like like liz mentioned there's a free printable check that out in the link that will walk you through the exact supplies that you need for both of these runners and if you want the whole shebang there's a pattern available for the quilt behind me yeah so let's let's talk about joy um for today's quilt i talk about joy talk about joy we all need some more of this do we not i think so it's one of the words that i chose for the year i chose balance and joy because i could not land on just one so i decided those are two things i need to focus my attention on and and like we said everybody needs some more joy in their life and so i think projects like this are a great subtle reminder that um joy is where we look for it where we where we choose to see it so let's talk about how we made it we are going to take nine of our five inch squares and we're going to cut them down into two and a half inch squares to make joy so for the different quilts you're going to need you know more or less it'll tell you exactly how many two and a half inch squares but because we're starting with the charm pack i know i need nine for this project so i'm just going to go through here and pick out a few i love this one and this one this is just such a beautiful collection and for folks who are asking you want nine because in this for the word joy you're gonna need 36 two and a half because you can get so many more two and a half inch squares out of that jelly roll exactly but you need two and a half inch square so you can cut down a charm pack you could even cut down a layer cake if you want to absolutely and that will give you those so it's all based on two and a half inch squares for this one in particular um we also use the jelly rolls for our sashings which makes it really useful especially of your background so i do want to recommend for the the whole quilt you use a jelly roll for that portion at least because it will save you a lot of time but anyway i am just going through here picking out my nine favorites i'm not even sure how many i have i still need a pink let's grab a pink oh and this pretty gingham all right and then i'm just going to stack a few of these up and i don't think i have quite nine here but that's okay because i have some of these already ready to go and so we're just going to use our handy two and a half by eight inch ruler and we can lay it right along one side and make a cut make sure those stay lined up and then cut the opposite direction so we have our two and a half inch squares easy peasy so i have those ready to go i just made a big stack of them and for me the way that my brain work works i actually like to lay out one letter at a time and i was thinking about it and i think this is a great quilt to maybe just make one letter a day maybe you are yeah maybe you're working on a project for someone else and this is something you want to do just for you in between to kind of just be creative um and it's really really quick and fun and so we've got our two and a half inch print squares i went ahead and am using the kona snow mini charms for the table runner project just because it works that way but like we said whatever you want have you know if you have yardage just cut it down to two and a half inch squares and so let's grab a few of those and let's just start laying this out so for the j you can see here our blocks are six two and a half inch squares tall and three wide some of these letters like if you get into the m and the n they're actually four wide so just keep that in mind depending on what you're working on but for this one all of our letters are three all right so let's talk about laying this out for this one we've cut our charm packs down into those two and a half inch squares and i am using the kona snow mini charms to make it really easy because all of this is based on those two and a half inch squares so let's just start with our j and for my brain i do like to lay out each block it just is easier for me and so i'm just going to start with we have in each of these blocks for our joy table runner we have six two and a half inch squares down by three across and you'll see in the quilt some of them are a little bit wider we've got four but the majority of the letters have a three by six layout okay so let's go ahead and do six down and i know that one of the things i've been really excited about for this quilt is that i have some friends and family who have non-traditionally spelled names and so being able to spell names and words and all the things is something that's going to be really fun to see and we want to see what you guys spell um joy is something we can do in lots of seasons and lots of colors exactly have joy all year round and so share with us if you use msqc show and tell then we can see the projects that you're sharing with us exactly and another thing that i think is so fun is when you're making quilts for kids i feel like kids in general love to have their names on anything sure you know they're just fans of that especially my ezra he is the youngest and so often he feels like his things get lost or taken by siblings and and so anything with his name on it he's very excited about so it would be very fun to add their name in letters to the top or bottom of any quilt that you make you can just incorporate those blocks in the design which is really fun it's such a great useful thing so you can see i've got the bare bones of our j block here but we actually do want to snowball we're going to make half square triangles on these two bottom corners and i'm actually going to swap this one out i probably should have given us a few more colors but just for fun let's go ahead and make some half square triangles let me see if i've got any other colors here i do okay so let's make some half square triangles here um so you can see on my background square i drew a line corner to corner and so it's just a really subtle line we're going to sew right on that line i've got it paired up with this other take it over here line we drew and if you use this diagonal seam tape like i have on my machine that means we're going to have the first point lined up with our needle and this back point we're going to keep lined up with the red center line and that will keep us straight down that center whether we mark it or not so that's a good time saver if you already have that on your machine then you don't have to draw the line there we go and now we can trim off that excess and press it back and you can see where that would fit in there to kind of create the curve of our j let's go ahead and make one more okay just so and again we usually will sew on either side of the line we're drawing but we're sewing on the liner method we're drawing on the line and if you so this becomes waste and if you're worried about that you could sew another quarter inch away and have teeny tiny tiny half square triangles but for me i'm okay letting these ones go so that's what we're going to do and so this one i'm not drawing the line i'm just going to use my diagonal seam tape so remember this first corner we line up with the needle and the back one here we line up on that red line and we will just sew down there we go and we can trim off leaving our quarter inch seam allowance and press that back i always like to press to the dark side so my seams are going to be hidden behind that fabric and so you can see there how our j is starting to take shape i've got i've got a few of these already where i've started to sew them together but i want to show you kind of how that looks so you can either sew them in rows this or columns i guess i should say this way or rows this way i i did it both ways honestly whatever struck you it's whatever um you know suits you that day so let's just move this one out of the way because i've got a few of these started and then we'll finish assembling our block something else i i heard you mentioned before misty too is that this is something that's a great block to maybe just sew one a day exactly something for yourself exactly well especially if you just need something quick in between maybe you're working on a project that feels a little bit daunting you've been in the middle of it for a long time these come together so quickly it's a great opportunity to step away and let yourself just be creative and play for a moment because you're dealing with a small block that you're still just nesting your seams and it comes together really quickly get your sojo back exactly that's sojou that's what we're looking for so here we go let's finish up these rows i've got a few pieces already made and you can see here how this is all going to come together so let's go ahead and we need to sew these two to our background squares here and this one to our print squares here so let's sew this one first and once we've made these half square triangles they are just like the rest of our two and a half inch squares they line up with the rest of those in our group just want to make sure we keep those consistent seam allowances so that one's ready it matches up great with our middle and then let's sew these two together the only thing you do need to watch with those half square triangles is that they're going the right direction to make your letter when you so sometimes you want to check that yeah sometimes they can wander when you walk from where you have it laid out to your um your machine you know they have a tendency to have a mind of their own so i know this needs to be angled in towards the middle so i'm going to check that and then line this up here oh and a good idea coming back from your matching like ezra likes his name on things you could also piece a name and put it into a pieced backing for your phone absolutely so even if it doesn't fit in the front of what you're working on what a great way to add a name idea one honestly you know even if you made these letters in solids and and had their names spelled out on the back you could write a message it would act as a label right there on the letters it would be so cute i love that [Music] all right so we've got that one sewn i'm going to go ahead and clear some of this out of the way i've made a mess so let's make sure it's not too distracting for you guys and then i'm going to press this i do want to talk about before i sew these together because i am going to nest all of these seams i did take some care with how i was pressing them or i meant to so it looks like it's been there i meant to right exactly i what i did here is because these weren't attached um this was pressed the right way but then i sewed it to the wrong side but that's okay it's no big deal so i'm just going to fix this and make all of my seams go down okay because my center column all of them are going up and this one is going down so i actually need to make sure that these seams are pressed down so all i need to do for that is i'm going to start with the top of my row on the machine and i just lightly hold this up i'm not really pulling on it because we don't want to distort the fabric and we just let those seams kind of fall the other direction that's a good tip because sometimes i've definitely pressed my seams the wrong direction and yeah press them well enough that they'd like to stand they don't want to stay and you'll see like sometimes there's a few that are still a little wonky but once i get the front flat then you can just come back and roll over it from the opposite side but just remember you don't want to pull on it because we don't want to distort our blocks we want to keep everything nice and square and so that looks great now and so now you can see this row my seams are going down this row my seams are going up and my last row my seams are going down so we're just going to start by sewing these first two rows together and making sure as we go along that each of those little junctures lines up and for me i find that really helpful in quilting with keeping my blocks square and finding a point to recheck and make sure everything is matching where it needs to i know some people don't like to have to nest seams but i enjoy it so it works great it's comfortable you can feel that with your fingers you can i think as you as you go along they just kind of settle in and it almost locks into place and that's what we're looking for the other thing about nesting is it means you don't have to pin you know you can pin exactly and if that's how you're comfortable with nesting go for it but it's one of the things that because you can feel whether it's off or not it actually removes the the need for a pin for a lot of people so yep because i can feel when it settles in there with my finger and i you can see i'm just stopping each time checking that that juncture and you're stopping like in the seam of the previous one or just after it so that you're not losing that seam that you've just held on to exactly yep i'm stitch at least to that that conjunct conjunction conjunction i don't know conjunction junction what's your function all right um i got distracted there by my choice of words but but yeah just stitch a little bit past that so that you don't um cause it to get off as you're adjusting the next one perfect and then line up the bottom there and we've sorted down that one and now you can go and press this but i'm just going to fold it open and give it just a little gentle finger press and then we're going to sew this one on and because we've taken the time to press those again this is going to nest beautifully hmm yeah i think we're going to see a lot of words spelled out and a lot of phrases too because you can make a quote that is this alphabet you can make a quilt that is a whole sentence or thought um say what you got to say you can spell it out and again you guys can share with us the projects that you make using the hashtag msqc show and tell and that lets everybody see the projects that you've made exactly we love to see all of your guys's creativity and so be sure and use that hashtag whether you're on instagram or facebook it'll help us find you and we would love to see that so there we go there is our j block didn't that come together so nice yes i love it and so i went ahead and made our o and our y blocks and you can see they fit together so nicely i went ahead and sashed in between my letters here with a two and a half inch strip and that's just like we did on the quilt behind us and then this inner border here is just an inch and a half and this is a two and a half inch outer border on this little table runner but it is so cute it's such a fast project i hope you guys enjoyed it remember we did this one all scrappy this spring version i love this i love this one too we kept all of our like colors together so even though it's still scrappy we're using different prints in there um it really makes the letters pop this way which i think is so fun um so yes like we said before use whatever words you want to share use use this idea and just uh you know let your creativity soar i hope you guys enjoyed this i'm super excited about it and we will see you guys next time you
