hello welcome to do-it-yourselfer Duane today we're going to be installing safety cables on the springs that that operate our garage door we previously did a different garage door maintenance video if you're interested in doing full maintenance on your garage doors with this type of Springs I would recommend you go look at that video as well but this garage door doesn't really need the maintenance that the other ones did so in this one all we're doing is installing the safety cable now their safety cables run down through the spring and the purpose of the coach safety cable is if that spring ever breaks pieces don't go flying and you know when it went to spring and these springs under a lot of tension if they break or if the cable breaks or if something comes loose parts can go flying and damaged things they can hurt you know your garage door they can hurt other things in your garage they can hurt you or a family member and that is the main thing that we want to try and prevent now what we got today is we've got cables like this which is blue Hulk you can probably see that there are a lot of different brands I'm not recommending one brand over no but they're you know this is what we're using because it was available and there's a lot of different brands cutting these cables are very difficult and I bought this vise grip pliers for cutting cables I'm a little bit of a tool guy so I wanted this this this pair cable cutters cost me twenty to twenty three dollars I bought it because of warranty but you don't have to have this to do the job you don't even have to cut the cables at all and we'll show you later how you get by without cutting the cables as far as tools you don't really need any tools to install this cable unless you want to buy the cable cutters you can't really cut them with wire cutters so they're just just too much they're just too hard to steel to cut with cable cut with wire cutters you might get through it but it's very difficult ok at this point we got our cable out of our box and just just zoom in so you can see the ends of the cable we've got two different ends here one has one ian has a loop one in is just to straight in with nothing going on the loop end starts out at this end we'll show you how to install that and one thing I'll warn you about when you unroll in these cables and you take them out the box be careful that you don't get a kink in the cable I mean I know I told you these cables were very difficult to cut and they are but a kink and a cable makes it much weaker than normal so if you get a bad kink in your cable throw that capable way and get you another one cuz it will have a definitely a weak spot in it so what we're going to do if you look right here where your spring is attached there's a little opening right here you can take this thing and just keep it right there and you're hooked on don't ever do that okay because what can happen if you do that if this spring breaks and things start jumping around that can come off it defeats the purpose of the cave the safety cable okay you want this safety cable installed in a way that it can't come loose so what we're gonna do is we're gonna take one end we're gonna mash it in a little bit that'll work and we're going through all these holes don't let that pull tight so that'll call the pink Buster cable so right there what we're going to do now that gets our cable attached on this in in such a way that no matter what happens with that spring or your other cables and pulleys that cable is not gonna come loose on this end now what we do and I'll probably have to raise my garage door to do this but you take the loose end and you're right down through the of the spring back through the center of the spring like I said you might get it going through there you probably have to raise your garage door so that that spring is not stretched out pardon me as you can see I just thought what to go through it keeps getting caught on the loops of spring because the spring is stretched out and when we open the garage door that spring will be together and the cable will go through much easier okay now we've secured the other end where it can't come off no matter what happens now we got our cable we raised our garage door we ran to cable down through the center of these long spring and now we just got this in we just got to secure this in so that it can't come loose what we're going to do is we're going to come down here and is lost plan I'm drinking one of these holes on one of the bracket now you may or may not have something like that sometimes these cables will come with a little something that you can attach it this in to attach the cable to it may or may not you just got to attach this some way down the other garage door and I'll show cook with that in a minute we've got some little cable clamps to go here okay to tighten that down so we could take it off if we ever needed to and those work really nice it's a little something extra you got to purchase you can also just not this thing okay and that's what I'm gonna do in this case come up here and I'm just going to put a new light in that thing and you know they're not that you use you know this is not really what I would recommend unless you're good at tying knots I like the little cable clamp that I used on their other garage doors better but do something to make sure that this ends stay secure like I said some of the cables will come with a little clamp that you attach to the to the wall up here or to the bracket or something to attach this in but now you got all this stuff okay you want to make sure this stuff does it get into working because if it happens to get you know under that cable on your pulley it can cause that cable to come off the public which causes problems it can cause a failure you've got to control this end so what we can do you can take this roll it up with a nice tight little loop come over here out of the way a couple of wire ties and we can secure that over out of the way where it won't get involved with other things so let's take it do that okay at this point I'm just putting my Wi-Fi around there pull it up tight okay I've taken cut this off from the knife or something why our wire cutters works great for that I generally use them a pocketknife it's taken cut it off like that but do something you know like I said I vault the cable cutters okay they will cut these cables if you got something to cut the cable cut the cable so that it the ends don't getting away if you can't cut the cables do something to make sure that this extra cable doesn't get involved with the workings of these cables and these pulleys that run your garage door up and down because if it gets under here it can cause a failure of the main cables and the springs and things that run your garage door up and down and you don't want that to happen so make sure you secure that cable some way or another you what we've decided to do in this case is a little bit different we got these little things now this is this is for attaching to a cable to make a loop or something and in this case we're going to use it to make sure that this cable stays attached very securely at this end and it never comes loose but it can be undone if you need to take it off for some reason okay now at this point we've got our clip on our cable we've tightened it down you won't want this room loose but you don't want it very tight real tight because things are moving here with your cable and you're going door going up and down but we've tighten this down so our cable can't come loose it's going to stay there but if we ever need to remove it for some reason you just take the screws loose and it comes off it's very simple and that's it for our video about installing the safety cable in your this type of spring it doesn't work for the tension Springs that go across behind me is for the long Springs like this and we do
