hey everybody welcome back this is a point of aim um so today we're going to be doing something a little bit different I am going to show you how to reload the 30.6 however do something little bit different and what we're going to do this time around is I'm going to show you my process on testing loads and you test loads when you have a gun that you've never reloaded for and you want to find the most accurate and economical charge you can for that specific cartridge so we're gonna be loading today for my m1 garand of my m1 garand was recently well not even recently rebelled by Fulton Armory in Jessup Maryland ah they did a phenomenal job so I've got a brand new match-grade barrel chamber for 30-odd 6 in there and all of my loads that I had worked up for that gun no longer shoot the way that they shoot we're used to so we're gonna be working on some new loads so this is kind of a you know what we have laid out we're using Remington um brass this is brand-new factory brass this is none of these have been reloaded before nice clean primer pockets so I'm going to take it through the whole process of making these ready to go you got as always CCI trimers these are large rifle primers we're doing something a little a little different the bullet i've never taken the m1 up this heavy as far as bullet grains go that's a hornet EA max 178 green bullet this is really the upper echelon of weights that you can really send on to the m1 garand for those of you that may not know the original m1 ball round um that was uh that was designed for really I believe the oh three Springfield was a 173 green bullet that was carried over the m1 garand before the 152 grain m2 ball round came out so we also have an assortment of powders up here um two of them are by IMR tune them are by Hodgdon on you know I also have in my rotation reloaded 15 we have Winchester 748 and in the back can't really see I think it's coming from the video is the Hornady reloading book so that's the information that we're gonna be going on so um the two powders we've got 50 rounds right here so we're going to process and and take care of 50 rounds and I'm going to use Hajin 4895 and I'm use IMR 4895 those two are the IMF 4095 is supposed to be a military powder what they use for the m2 ball rounds more so they say in 4895 is a closed derivative of it so they're pretty comparable as far as powders go but those are two I'm going to use for the for the first set of round so uh let's uh let's get going first things first since this is brand new factory breasts um this is almost a controversial topic in some circles I always resize my breasts whether it's fresh from the factory or not I always resize it with the standard resizing diet today we're using lead eyes it's just what I had laying around so being in a bottle necked cartridge you have got to lubricate the cases so they don't get stuck in the ship in the dye so I've got some imperial sizing line so I'm just can take a little bit right here on my fingers put some wax on the body put in the shoulder up we go and down we go we have a resized case now the cool thing about the Imperial sizing wax is it has such a high lubricity that literally for probably the next three or four cartridges I'm not going to need to put any more on my fingers the just the residual wax that I have is going to be enough to make sure that whoops is going to be enough to make sure that these guys won't get stuck kind of pushing it here with this last one so this is a very slow process but is a is a necessary process because if we don't have the gun we don't have the cartridge sized right it's not going to chamber properly and when you have a gun like the m1 garand and you wanted to make brass or rounds that are as accurate it's possible you want to make sure that you're doing everything right and you want to make sure that you don't cut corners with everything you know with with pistol ammunition when you're reloading pistol ammunition it's it's one of those things that you know you throw them in there progressive press you crank out as much ammunition as you can it's you know it's not a big deal at all with rifle ammunition it's old with different rifle ammunition you know a lot of guys go really really crazy with with case prepping everything I don't a lot of guys will actually weigh each case and keep them in batches within a thousand of a grain or thousands an ounce or something like that and they Rae each projectile as well you know I'm not doing any national matches or anything like that so I'm not doing anything like that so I'm gonna size the rest of this brass and then we're going to clean them off clean the wax off of them and we're going to trim them so uh seeing a bit okay so we got all of our brass sized we wiped off all of the case sizing wax you know you just take a rag to it you know it's not that difficult just you know wipe it off so now what we need to do is we need to trim these guys so you know an order form to fit in the chamber properly and ensure the utmost in accuracy you want to make sure that these guys are trimmed to whatever you're reloading manuals trim case trim link is according to warranty book and I'm using the latest edition of the owner D book because you know that's for the bullets that we're using according to them these cases need to measure two point four eight four inches in length no no no longer than that so we have our Lyman Universal case trimmer setup right here I don't have the power adapter for it so I'm just teeing up clicking it by hand we have it set up to do just that so very simply take a brass put in the shell holder lock it and shrimp until you dream until you just don't feel any resistance anymore so we can pull that back out and this should be we'll take our calipers and that's a little light it's a little low but it's nothing nothing too bad you know you can you can tolerate within a thousandth and still be still be on the safe side so now that we have that trimmed we're going to go to our our CBS case prep Center and we're just going to giver and put champer on this bad boy if you guys can see that but now it's got a nice nice neck around so we're going to do that to all of our pieces of brass I know it doesn't sound great but I have these cutters right here these are carbide cutters they cut beautifully I'll be getting a card bite insert for the Lyman case by the line Lyman case trimmer eventually doesn't need to be anything doesn't need to be anything too aggressive you just want a nice clean neck on these guys okay now that all the cases are prepped they're trimmed they're you know deeper champa everything like that he's leaving most tedious process of the entire reliving session we now have to prime them so because I don't have a bench mount in priming device which shame on me we have to resort to hand priming so it's not that big of a deal um you know shields up strong hands so you only have fifty cartridges we're going to measure out 50 primers you have to do right there I'm going to filter a flip them over and then we're going to shake them make sure they orient properly all right put our tray cover if you need it right there's a little lip on this inside how many people does it take to put this lid on there we go all right then they go into a little priming tool open the gates primers fall in there of course that first one was always a doozy now we just take our brass then squeeze we got ourselves nice planet make sure it's just below flush which is exactly what it is so we're just going to go through and do this with all of our pieces of brass if you guys if you're watching this if you're watching this video um get a bench flange system it's a heck of a lot easier a lot less tedious than something like this I know reading makes a really really nice bench priming system that attaches to your single stage press which is what I'll be looking at getting but RCBS often makes its really awesome standalone bench priming system that is supposed to work really really well so um I'm going to fly through this and then we're going to go to harbor charging okay so up until now everything has been pretty much the same as far as loading 30.6 from the sizing the reprime encase forming everything like that everything is exactly the same now here's where everything takes a turn since we're testing I have 2 loading blocks each with 25 cartridges in it again these are all trimmed and primed these guys are all ready to go so what we're going to do is we're going to look in quantities manual so we're going to turn to the section on m1 garand it gives us the what rifle is the primers that are used in the diameters everything like that and we're going to flip to the 178 green bullets now for us we're using know if you guys can see that very well there we go H 48 95 and IMR 4895 so these are the velocities and the the charges that we're looking at using so I have h 48 95 in the in the powder dispenser right now so we're going to start with a charge of 38.2 grains and we're going to do that for 5 cartridges so we're going to type in 3 8 v change our speed to fast and hit dispense now don't forget your safety glasses on this one guys wear those so what this going to do the laundry powder dispenser is not going to dispense all that powder and once that's done we're going to be able to put it in the case now once we put it into the case obviously we're I'm going to seat the bullet we're going to that in a second but what I wanted to show you guys is over here actually so this is my cartridge case this is where I'm gonna put all the empty cartridges write yourself something very very simple like this okay all it says is 30.6 m1 garand gives me the what the bullet is and gives me the case of raw length I have two sections one for age forty and five the other one for IMR 4895 and the way that I have it set up is I have 25 on one side and 25 on the other so I know exactly what I'm what I'm working with so I just wanted to show you guys that it's really really simple in elijah to keep track of everything that you're doing okay so now that the powder but this charge has been dispensed we're going to take our cartridge powder funnel over it and take our powder we're just going to slowly trickle it in and put that back on top and that's going to sit in the tray so we're going to do that I'm going to do this four more times for this first row of brass and then I'm going to up the charge for the next set up charge your next set so on and so forth and then when you get to here then we're going to switch to IMR 4895 powder so I'm not going to show you every single one of them but once we get all the powder in here then we're going to go to our supreme press and we're gonna seat some bullets stay tuned okay so right here we have our batch of 30.6 and it's got a powder in it this is the h 3895 powder so what we're going to do is permission to take and empty there are a filled breast case we're going to take our bullet 140 178 grain a max set it on top and we're going to raise the ring we already have receding dye in there and there we go now I can already tell by looking at that that that is way way too long so we're going to turn the seeding stem down get the cartridge back in and raise it now we're looking for an overall length total overall length according to hornies book three point two four zero so we're gonna get our dial calipers three point two we're going to measure it now according to our dial caliper we are at three point four zero nine so yeah a little a little bit long so we're going to give a good turn on our seating stem raise it again and measure again and we're going to continue to do this until we get the overall length that we desire so even good turning in and this is trial and error this is going to take a few tries so we're right now we're at three point two nine four so we're getting close another good turn down a little bit more when you measure it again three point two seven four three point two six zero we're getting closer closer and closer hopefully this will do it that's where we have so we're a little deep we're two point three three seven so I'm going to do is I'm going to back this out just a hair we're going to keep this so there is your finished thirty got six round we're just going to put in our car strip in so we're going to take the next case fill powder put a bullet up in there raised seat and measure again this one's a little bit long so again we just turn it in outer so slightly until we get the right seating depth perfect three point two four zero that's exactly what we're looking for so just like any normal process we go through with every case sleep a bullet as we're supposed to and we measure here we go so you can hear in the background or you might have heard in the background the powder for the IMR setup so there's a powder going so we can continue to seat these bullets until that powder is ready to go and we're going to measure every single one of these to make sure that they are proper there's one thing about reloading highly accurate ammunition you want them to be as close as Tom's as you can and then well there you have it guys this was the process that I use to test ammunition specifically in this case 30.6 for an m1 garand this process would change you know depending on what gun I'm shooting it for you know if I had a bolt gun I'd probably be measuring the exact headspace of that gun and seeing how how close I can get the bullet to the lands and the rifling and so on and so forth so the next step in this wonderful process that take these bad boys of the range and see we can do with them you know I use 4895 both IMR and Hajin varieties for this test you know I will also be using down the road IMR 4064 as well as Hodgdon forget those are those are really four of my these two and the other two are really four of my go-to powders as far as rifle rifle scope uh you know warranty has probably ten different powders listed for this specific projectile so I would encourage you if you have the means to use every single one of those powders on if not do what I do and get two at a time you know get to powder see which one works and you know this is all about what works best in your gun so you know mind was made very everything that I did here very well may not work in my gun at all but that's why I keep a little a real card like this it has all the information on it that way I can mark it off nope this didn't work or yes this did work so I'm excited to get these uh to get these tested well if you guys liked what you watched uh please please please subscribe check out our facebook at WWF ace book calm for my name and our blog at point of aim pro blog spot.com thanks for watching guys as always and I'll see you next time
