Relic Hunting Basics with Jase Robertson

[Music] and here i am during the split of a duck season you say as you can tell it's cold it's it's literally 34 degrees about a 15 mile an hour wind and it was snowing earlier and you're like what do you fish go duck that nope it's during the split but i have discovered something just as fun as duck hunting you're still hunting hunting relics metal old coins these are some of the things i found so i'm telling you because i'm still a novice uh these old geezers that i'm running around hunting with now they're they're pros uh one of my best friends in the world who got me into this murray crow you know he's old as dirt but he's been doing this for 35 40 years i've only been doing this less than two years so here's what i want to convey to you if i can do this and find all this stuff you can do it so the trick is first you got to find your machine and you got to find you somewhere to go i kind of followed around with murray and he took me through it they got this garrett who i'm i'm with they have some that are pretty inexpensive in the metal detecting world and all you're trying to do with earphones and you're looking at a display is match the sound and number that you're seeing on the screen and the sound in your ears you know if it's going no good but if it's gone you're like oh i got something good and that excitement right there is why you come and then you find stuff so what we do is we find old places on maps and then we go to that place and see what's there now and then we try to figure out if we can hunt there so that's part of the fun of all this and even though i've just begun i picked it up fairly quickly i mean the first month was a lot of nails a lot of bullets a lot of aluminum cans and a lot of frustration but as i went along my first find was an indian head penny i didn't even know we had indian head pennies in our past and i thought this is cool and my best find so far in the coin world was a three cent piece who knew we used to make three cent pieces i've come to find out that we made them from 1851 to 1870. so when i found this i thought it was a toy because i really couldn't see it i stuck it in my pocket i had found a silver dime that day i was all excited about that and i took a magnifying glass and i looked and i could see that united states of america so i called murray i was like i think i found a coin it has a star and i said what is that he said that's a trine three cent piece he said it what year is it i said 1851. he said well if it has a zero mint mark from new orleans it's rare i look zero we were cackling like school girls and so of all the things that i found that little bitty piece is my best find and people look at all what i found and they don't even notice this little bitty you can barely see it it's real thin it's half the size of a dime 1851 it's hard to even grab three cent piece he said what are you going to do with it i'm going to keep it look at it i couldn't sell it it's priceless to me so i've come a long way from hearing strange sounds in the yard digging up every metal that came my way it's been a really really fun adventure all right so now look you can sit around and talk about old times and memories but the whole reason for me being here is to go hunt so i'm gone follow along i'm gonna dig this up we got here i actually think it's a uh it's a piece of a bullet [Music] i think it's a bullet fragment huh yes don't know where this was at whatever it is oh i see it well look at there it's a button that's good there pretty old we keep buttons yeah yeah i just got some writing on they say don't rub it you rubble but hey okay [Music] i don't know it might be something i think i felt it just here there it is what do we got here it's actually i don't know definitely brass oh it's a it's the top of a uh of a spoon [Music] or some kind of utensil see see the design on it huh i'm out here with these garrett guys and uh i'm actually going to do a little christmas shopping because under this ground i believe there is treasure and where there is treasure there are gifts you find the right piece of treasure and guess what you don't have to go to a store or to a mall or order online you literally get it from the ground clean it up and guess what she'll never know all right look i'm uh i'm a newbie about this but the way i learned how when i come around i have mine set on uh zero mode and i've got some of the iron disc set to about 15 so i can get a clear signal so i came up on this so you hear there was a little beeping in there now when i first hit it it was a lot of beeping like that and i'm getting a good signal but you can hear a little bit of iron when i turn sideway [Music] that sounds no good you say what are you gonna do i'm not gonna dig it i'm gonna move on so what you want is that clear sound you hear it a little bit there but you turn sideways no it's all iron it tried to be a good target i just wanted to let you all know what's going on in between my ears when i have my earphones so literally pink floyd had it right there's someone in my head and it's not me 80 81 80 81 hear that you know what that is the sound of dreams coming true i like that signal okay i'm a little excited it's the best signal i've had today we haven't been here long oh we struck found a pen okay i knew it was something good whoa so see you say well it's just a penny [Music] somebody lost that i would say at least 70 80 years ago but it's a value even though it's a small value i came along and i put it back in circulation that's why we do this so why are you getting so excited about finding a penny it raised the morale that's not a christmas present but i know somebody lost a penny from 1940 they probably lost a few silver coins there too so and when you get something back in to circulation there's a spiritual theme there you know you get lost you don't know where you are it's cold and dark and then all of a sudden you look up somebody helps you out and you're back going again i mean i don't think it's uh i'm gonna dig it up it it's not holding the number but it's going 80 to 90. so i won't at least see what it is well i think it's trash now see when i dug the hole the number went down went to 60 then [Music] well i'm getting various i don't think it's anything good sometimes you just don't know and it's like that uh you remember the clint eastwood movie i think it was a dirty hairy you know eastwood said you got to wonder to yourself did he fire six shots or only five and the bank robber was laying there and he went hey i guessed no eastwood pulled up and the guy was like it clicked so he already knew but i don't know what this is but hey i got to know huh okay piece of brass some kind of clamp hey it's actually got some writing on it in there and writing is good what does that say uh i don't know if that's writing or designed a piece of definitely a piece of brass alrighty okay now i know brass is good when you're finding brass [Music] square nail but i swear now but look you never know what you're gonna find this will definitely be a shooter because it's a little cattywompus i didn't find that with a metal detector that's that would be the naked eye find we find about uh you know ten more of these we can have a little christmas marble set classic edition so look look at here he said why are you putting the metal detector down well sometimes you run up on you you ever have that feeling you're being watched this didn't register on the metal detector what we have here is a decapitated porcelain doll of some sort the barbaric world of porcelain [Music] look at here look i know what happened now we can put two and two together now we have two marbles look so what we have we had a game of marbles a fight broke out porcelain dolls may have been thrown apologies were given [Laughter] [Music] cash was [Music] well distributed getting 83 82 86 whoa it could be a silver quarter maybe i'm feeling pretty good about it i think i'm i think i'm in the neighborhood well the anticipation is growing [Music] i still hadn't found this okay i was just fixing to leave the hole we were wow okay this has been a two day journey we're not sure what we got here yet oh but i'm liking it i am liking that i think it's a silver quarter don't you trying not to oh yep yeah i think you got a silver quarter silver coin oh sweet there it is that's awesome jason ain't full of water on it huh it's always on that walk back to the car i was headed back we're getting out of here let me say i think i'm ready to go to the next spot oh 35 35 19 35. sweet what's today what year is it we're ready for 20 20 20 so 85 years ago some more boys out here oh jase this is why we do it we got silver there's silver in those hills and i got a confirmation from my friend gypsy he was like oh yeah sweet that's digger marble day we're gonna have a game on marbles gypsy more marbles you know that old boy that lost his marbles [Music] we found them i'm sure i'll see y'all again cause we're gonna do this every chance we get
