sir Steve Redgrave is one of the greatest Olympians of all time multiple gold medals an incredible athlete last year I tried and failed appallingly to row as fast as him I've almost recovered so ready for round two but this time I'm inviting people to have a go with me and depending on how well they do they might go home with some cold hard catch or a significant [Music] injury right for today's challenge we just need need some concept two rowing machines and some regular gym Bros so I've come to my gym here at move HQ where they should have plenty of both back when sir Steve was picking up gold medals every four years his best time on one of these for the standard 2,000 M distance was 5 minutes 48 seconds it meant he was covering 500 M every 1 minute 27 seconds beat that four times in a row for 2,000 M you'd be faster than him today we're asking people just to do it once 1 minute 20 7 seconds can you go further than 500 M to prove it's possible I should probably have to go [Music] first so let's recap the challenge we have the timer counting down from 1 minute 27 seconds because that is how long it takes sir Steve to cover 500 M we have the distance counting up and the successful completion of the challenge we'll see it reach 501 M or more now the time it takes you to cover 500 m your 500 M split time as it's known is something that many people will be used to if they've used one of these machines because it is normally the most prominent number on the display that's because it is basically your speed it doesn't matter if you go 500 M your split time is always going to tell you how long it would take if you did it's a bit like 40 mph in your car doesn't matter if you're driving for 40 Mi or indeed driving for an hour 40 m per hour is just a snapshot of what you are doing in that moment on the rowing display here you can see I'm currently hovering around the 1 minute 24 Mark which is perfect it is underneath that 127 split and so I know if I can hold on to that pace I will finish with more than 500 [Music] M 515 so after I made that look so straightforward our first two Challengers step up to try and secure themselves an easy 50 who's going first Daniel Daniel Mark right so we set the timer for 1 minute 27 if you do 51 M you beat him and you get 50 Quid okay 3 2 one roll nice that's a good speed and very quickly Daniel gets his split times Down Under that crucial 1 minute 27 point and that takes quite a bit of effort in itself of course the real effort is then keeping it there looking good 125 splits it might only be a quarter of the 2,000 M that red grave completes at this pace but it is still a long time to be working at almost maximum effort couple more PS let's go come on 4 seconds 3 2 one all the way 488 M I tell you what for a non rower that is not bad at all it isn't bad in fact just 12 M short of the target is a lot closer than I thought we'd be getting this early on har Harry you got two Targets obviously 51 M gets you 50 Quid but 489 m beats your buddy right I think I'm ready he warmed up for 4 seconds that's a cardio workout for a gym shark athlete you want 489 to beat him you want 501 to beat red grave you need 516 if you want to beat me but let's all get carried away 3 2 1 row now if you're wondering why I haven't bothered to put the time display up yet that's because Harry did not bother to stay sitting on the rowing machine for his first attempt oh what's happened Harry you got to stay on your chair mate let me hold that for you you understand in the real world you're now drowning right three 2 1 roll [Music] if this is not a challenge you've done before it's very hard to know quite how fast you can go at the start 500 m is not long enough to rectify any mistakes too slow in the beginning and there's not time to catch back up but too quick and you will hit a brick wall before the time is [Music] up digging let's go five things keep going come on come on nice work 422 M but you did have two goes Laura Mark and Wilson Wilson well done you never heard that one before of you because you are not a man that's right you don't have to beat sir Steve R RVE yeah you have to beat Brook Mooney who is the current women's 2K indoor world record holder her split for 500 m is a 1 minute 35 if you get to 501 m yeah you get 50 Quid if you stay on your chair you beat Harry what's your sporting background uh we're try and Crossfit yeah no Kipping rowing 3 2 1 roll so Laura gets 1 minute 35 on the clock but that's almost a harder challenge not only does she have to literally Row for a longer time that 1 minute 35 split by Brook Mooney is absolutely flying [Music] let's go effort for the last 10 seconds keep going keep pulling right through the line let's go nice work so close 410 M how horrible is that horrible yeah Wilson is up and I don't know if he saw our cameras and changed just for us but he came dressed to impress what what is going on with your socks uh un you got unicorns on your socks unicorns today okay 3 two one row now Wilson is a big guy and so using his strength advantage to quickly get those splits comfortably under 1 minute 30 if he can hold on to that he'll move to the top of our leaderboard and if he has the ability to pick it up he might get close to the magic 500 nice nice splits give it let's go 15 seconds that's okay 10 let's go kick come on dig in dig again this is what we want to see pushing right the way to the Finish Line Wilson might be wearing children's socks but this effort is 100% adult our new leader 492 you are from here to the bicycles away from 50 Quid awesome and our lead female Steph Mark have you already worked out you look worn out already Park you've done Park run we love where do you get your park run today uh what time don't know sub30 minutes I love a sub30 park run three 2 1 row so despite having already done 30 minutes of pretty intense exercise by running her local park run Steph still ends up being one of the few athletes on the rowing machine that we see able to maintain the same Pace throughout the row if you are quite comfortable pushing yourself for the 20 or 30 minutes required to get around a 5k park run it turns a short effort like this row into quite literally are walking theart 10 seconds keep going right the way through keep going come on we're looking good come on 400 be keep going come on pull that thing come on yay nice 44 lead female congratulations that's more impressive than your park run yeah like seriously like your park run time just under 30 minutes is around average park run that's that's above average three two one row oh George has got a fast off so next up is George and he is going to demonstrate exactly what we thought would happen when we put non- rowing gym users on a rowing machine because he goes off at an absolutely blistering Pace hitting splits in the low 120s and that is possible because he is a strong guy in 6' 4 to demonstrate the most extreme example of that guys like Eddie Hall and Brian shaww s absolutely staggering ing times for 100 m Sprints but they are only doing that for 12 or 13 seconds big and strong will certainly get you off the line fast but you need some serious cardiovascular endurance to keep it going come on all the way across the line let's go let's go let's go George you had a start that was Olympic and a finish that was not Olympic man that's a good time 485 M okay 3 2 1 row row row row so nobody yet able to match Steve red Graves pace and we started to wonder if anybody was going to hit that magic 501 M it was starting to look like we need have bought any money to the gym at all and then Sam turned up and there were Clues immediately that he might be going quick today first of all he left his backwards hat on to do the row and that is a a clothing move more bold than unicorn socks and then he asked how far I'd got in 1 minute 27 seconds it looks like Sam might be setting his targets Beyond sir Steve and aiming for Mr cardio dolphin himself have you done I have uh I got 515 M wow ready tip any tips yeah yeah row fast two one row good nice split we keep that up yeah flying Sam was flying Not only was he hitting splits around the low 120s from the start but even with 30 seconds to go he was still holding it around 125 yeah we might have this come on 30 seconds it's nothing not only did SRO fast enough to beat red grave he was so confident in doing it he stopped short of the finish line rolled across it and still beat me by a meter 516 m in 1 minute 27 seconds gets sam50 in his pocket and moves him straight to the top of our leaderboard and then Nick turned up Nick fresh from having just set a deadlift world record what did you do uh it's the heaviest deadlift in 24 hours how many how much did you deadlift in 24 hours uh 5 66,000 kilos yeah sounds about right no it doesn't Nick deadlifted so much in 24 hours that he can't even remember how much he deadlifted so I looked it up on his Instagram page 580,000 220 kilos or just over about a million and A4 pound while on his Instagram I also found him using my personal best for the deadlift to do reps of 20 3 2 1 Rong so just for fun I put Nick split time in the top right corner of the screen and you can see almost immediately he is under 120 oh he's quick he's quick halfway crushing it absolutely crushing it all the way through to the end do not slow down 15 seconds let's go let's go dig in now come on 10 seconds come on let's go come on come on yes smash it oh dude 550 M that is obscene you're about 97% quads so it's understandable easy as that 550 M and that's just crushed everybody body and just as I was thinking how sad it was to not only lose 50 but also have my personal best deadlift records made look rather silly Karen turned up to do the same to my running times she is five times British Master Sprint Champion with 100 200 and 400 meter times that I could only dream of however I'm not sure she's ever had a duck pwn Podium and she's definitely not a rower so this was going to be interesting you have it on that one I can't see to the p no yeah need that when you're running on the track you don't get a big sign up there finish line there's a Finish Line here it's so when it gets to zero my goodness two one roll here we go oh that is rapid straight away yeah just got to keep it up nice exactly as you'd expect from a Sprint athlete Karen absolutely smashing it early on hitting almost 1 minute 30 splits straight away the challenge is going to be as somebody whose events normally take them a matter of seconds how would she do trying to hold on for so much longer okay 40 seconds it's nothing let's go Karen has been rowing for over a minute and at the speed she runs on a track she would have completed 400 m by now so this is outside her comfort zone and it is starting to show come on 25 seconds is nothing let's go all the way do not slow down come on come on let's keep going let's go come on let's go 15 seconds yes smashing it keep going come on on all the way keep pulling the thing let's go come on five more seconds that's it all the way to the line come on 459 M you are our fastest female do you know nobody could tell that you're a sprinter yeah no my advice don't step it out to 800 M on the track so Karen did not get her 501 M but it was still an absolutely superb performance especially when you consider that without being so rude as to divulg your lady's age the only person older than her that took the challenge was me so as we wrap up by watching Jen take on the 500 met challenge it is clear that red grave may have set his 2,000 M time almost 30 years ago but it is still rapid by today's standards and something that most people can't even match over a quarter of the distance watching genen get absolutely worn out here reminds me if you're a fan of hammering away for a decent length of time to improve your endurance performance cardiio dolphin. comom is where you need to get your merch from and lastly a huge thank you to move HQ for Lending us their facilities their rowing machines and a few of their gym brows and if you're a rower yourself and now very excited to jump into the comments and explain how everybody was rowing badly remember you guys haven't even figured out how to face the right way around when you sit on your boats so get your own house in order first oh and if anyone's wondering no Jen did not get the 500 M and no my back has still not stopped aching okay that was easy that was [Music] easy
