oh come on almost got me tatch me come on oh God damn it hang on I almost CAU the dragon you almost got me I can get him wait where's he going now you don't ever catch the Dragon no no I said I in Rebel Moon Kora lives an insignificant life on an insignificant planet on until one day the evil Galactic Empire shows up to conduct some douche bagery so Kora must te up with A thieving pilot and travel off planet to find the Galaxy's Rebellion to stop the Empire which could in fact work out because turns out that Kora is actually a lost member of a famous Galactic family all this and More in Zack Snider's space fights I mean Rebel Moon if you didn't already catch from my tone Rebel moon is not a very good movie and with that I mean that it makes even the Marvel seem appealing to watch perhaps I treated you too harshly for which there are many individual reasons such as the fact that a lot of the content here is very shallow and basic like how bad guy soldiers are bad guys just for the sake of being bad why you bully me and the fact that much of the content here is kind of ripped off from other properties like Star Wars from the story to the plot to the opening shots to the settings to elements like Planet destroying spaceships as well as light source but honestly I don't really have any interest to talk about that stuff myn the only reason I even want to cover this movie is The Man Behind it Zack [Music] [Music] Snider as you may know I've always been a Snider fan I think he's one of the most visually talented directors in Hollywood but at this point even I'm getting frustrated with him because he's also by far the biggest waste of talent in Hollywood he's like a gold sniffing dog who uses his nose not to find gold but to smell PES of poop on the side of the road what are you doing H what are you doing nothing and it's pissing me off especially with Rebel Moon which is like a monument to Snider's downfall because make no mistake this movie is Zack Snyder he's the director the writer the producer the cinematographer probably the security and Catering as well oh sounds perfect the main problems with Rebel Moon as a movie are the main problems with Zack Snyder as a filmmaker so today let's uncover what those main problems are so the hopefully Snider can get over them as well as himself and finally once again become what he should be a visual-m minded director for hire bringing other people's stories to life here is Zack Snider's worst enemy and what must be done to save him from that [Music] enemy the first ner issue here is obsession with mythology which basically means that the focus is way more on stuff around this movie rather than on the movie as you can already guess there's a big bunch of backstory and foreshadowing and World building going on when the movie opens there's voice over Exposition about the Galaxy's hierarchy glory of the mother World seemed Without End until the assassin's blade struck down the king and queen when the Empire shows up to kora's Planet there's explanations about the villager's relationship with the Empire you've been selling our Surplus grain to the enemies of that ship up there when the Empire arrives there's talk about them needing food to fight the Rebellion Army runs on its stomach when Empire fire soldiers post up in corus Village there's a robot with you know princess and although building mythology can be effective and awesome Snider's way of doing it comes with a couple pitfalls lack of context and lack of interest in the present firstly you may notice that the backstory rarely means anything in the moment when the Empire shows up to talk about hunting the Rebellion we've never seen the hunting or the Rebellion we've never seen the rebels cause the Empire any harm we don't have even a clue as to why the Empire needs all of this one Village's food to continue their fight will starve to death I I don't understand what you want I want everything but why there's no scene in the movie where your forces are hungry for food there's no evidence at all that you are lacking food when the robot is talking about being a protector of the slain King who won't fight anymore the same thing we've never seen the king or his Palace or assassin we've never seen the princess or anyone else we've never seen the robots in action or in the action of giving up fighting it's just fairy dust somewhere out there that we may or may not at some point see more of freeze there times 10 enhance then forward frame by frame now just before the views block there's a shape change and because there's not enough context it's all basically worthless when the robot picks up the gun to protect the acute villag against the empire it should be a big deal except it's not because we've never seen him or other robots refuse to shoot or go against commands the movie just says he doesn't fight anymore and then two scenes later gives him a gun which he immediately fires after which he runs out of the movie why are you running and that context is mandatory like how Star Wars doesn't begin just with Exposition and a long ship shot but also with scenes of the Empire searching for the rebel as an Unstoppable Force tear this ship apart until you found those plans like how Rebel Moon should have opened with the Royal assassination or some plot relevant clash between the Empire and Rebels to give context for stuff stuff like the war and the power dyamics and the villain and maybe even kora's past without that context none of this means anything secondly and most importantly you may also notice that Snider's best ideas nowadays seem to always exist in the past or the future rather than the present because as I hinted at there are cool ideas here like kora's home planet being invaded when she was young like Kora becoming a ruthless Empire Soldier fighting bloody wars in the Empire's Name Across the Galaxy like Kora becoming a bodyguard for the princess who has abilities and like the assassination and like kora's new Warrior friends having famous histories genius Battlefield Commander General Titus all cool ideas which in this movie are limited at most to Tiny fragments in this movie all the robot does is shoot a gun and disappear in this movie all the genius Battlefield Commander does is whine and be taken prisoner and then shoot a gun in this movie almost all Cora does is watch other people do stuff in this movie the assassination doesn't exist beyond words because the focus is elsewhere tell me partner when I can expect my Harvest oh my God bro what I'm getting at is that watching a Snider movie nowadays is like playing that Dragon Chase game in South Park come on almost got he has all these cool ideas and promises but they're always somewhere out there just Out Of Reach with Snider of today there's always another version another sequel another time when his best ideas will finally be real except they never are because for some reason he always insists on doing something way less interesting right now you know this movie ends in the villain being resurrected like haha in the next movie he will be super badass and interesting and it's like why in the next movie why was he super boring and forgettable in this movie if you have all these cool ideas why do you begin with 30 minutes of nothing happening Zack Snider why is your best story material now always limited to short montages why the hell are your best ideas Always Somewhere in the future or the past and not in the here and now if your first movie is boring most people will not show up for the second it's like if I promise to tell a story of this hero who travels to Mexico to save her daughter from the cartel but then first I have to tell the story of how she learned Spanish to survive in Mexico oh the hero downloads this language app on her phone she uses the app for 30 minutes per day to do these fun interactive Spanish lessons and after 3 weeks of that she's able to have a conversation in Spanish and begins her journey but that's in the next movie of course we're out of time now no this is your story you can do what you want just make the movie you really want to make oh yeah for anyone who wants to quickly learn a language like my hero but in real life the app is called Babble it's the super easy to use language app that fits your daily life and teaches you through a variety of efficient and entertaining Hands-On methods designed by real language teachers to get you talking in three weeks is sponsoring a 60% subscription discount and they also have a president day sale going on so check them out with the link below or the QR code on screen to learn a language without the boring stuff another Snider problem here is that this movie isn't a progressing story so much as it is a collection of separate Side Stories leading nowhere like I mentioned nothing really happens for the first half an hour it's just a bunch of fleeing moments instead of proper scenes a shot of a ship with Exposition a moment of Kora doing farm work a moment of the villagers hanging out a moment of kora's host referencing her past a scene where the Empire comes for food that can also hardly be called a scene because there's no context and because the hero isn't even in it what is he doing there like this in the background what the it's not until like 30 minutes in when there's finally a proper scene with an obstacle and an action required from the hero to overcome it and even then we don't know the characters involved enough to care so whatever get over you're a nice guy you're a nice guy but I don't fck and in this manner this movie is not a story that develops action by action but rather a big Montage of random disconnected events in order to protect the Village from when the empire returns for the food in 10 weeks Kora goes to find a rebel associate to hire the rebels to protect them but since the right guy just happens to be taken away right now isn't that convenient cor instead goes into this bar to throw a hail merry question out loud why not I'm looking for information and then stuff happens some alien wants to get jiggy with cor's friend for some reason so there's a fight some pilot overheard Kora and agrees to take her on a road trip so they go with him then we go to this desert planet where we watch an enslaved Tarzan buy his freedom by flying this big bird after which he joins us then we go to this mining planet where we watch a samurai fight a big child snatching spider after which she joins us all while of course seeing and hearing back story about stuff like kora's wartimes and the princess with abilities and whatever else and at this point it's like what the going on wasn't the plan to go find a rebel associate and the Rebellion to convince them to protect the village when the Empire comes for the food in 10 weeks how did we go from that to letting a random pilot take us to random planets to watch random people do random stuff it's as if we're straying away from the main story to do side quests or rather watch side quest be done how are you today bye look letting the story unfold in unexpected ways is useful like how Luke and Obi-Wan go look for Princess Leia's people to let them take the message to the Rebellion that's no moon only to end up in a death star and run into Leia herself and then with her knowledge take the message to the rebels directly but still all that must be essential for the main story enough to always push the main story forward and Snider's problem is that he doesn't do that he does whatever he wants for me they kind of summed it up does the bird or flying a bird have anything to do with what we're doing thus beating the spider and hiring the samurai get get us any closer to finding and hiring the rebels no the main story would function just fine without it but whatever Snider wants it you don't include that I take small issue how do like really and the issue with this disconnected side quest mentality is that it makes the movie feel stuck in place and long because our main storyline of finding and hiring the rebels to protect the village when the Empire returns isn't advancing we're moving sideways toward additional content another one another one not forwards toward the main point you know then we finally somehow find a general and the rebels and they join us then the pilot betrays us to the Empire then we fight a small Squad of Empire soldiers which turns out to ultimately achieve nothing meaningful then we finally return to the Village to protect it against the empire but in another movie because whoops we're out of time now we did so much yet it feels like we barely did anything because we weren't doing what we were supposed to it's like magnificent 7 but without the stuff that's the point of magnificent 7 because nowadays it always takes Snider 5 hours to do what other directors do in two dear Zack Snider you must learn to choose if you want to make a galactic war movie about Kings and princesses with abilities and assassinations then make it if you want to make a mining City Samurai spider movie then make it if you want to make a village protecting their grain from the Empire movie then make it just please choose because currently your movie isn't really any of those the third SN problem here is that this movie is so full of cool elements that they ultimately lack substance and feel like meaningless noise as an example of what I mean look at the robot again which is a cool character a royal machine designed to protect the galactic King that ultimately lost purpose when the King was slain it's even voiced by freaking Anthony Hopkins militarium defender of the king awesome but what is actually done with the robot well it's unboxed and turned online it's used to carry packages and then bullied for no real reason doesn't fight back why you bully me it sits with some Village girl and talks about how she looks like the King's Daughter then it walks in on the soldiers being bad and shoots one shot and then literally runs out of the movie and if that's so what's theing Point what's the point of getting Anthony Hopkins to play a royal robot if it just immediately disappears terrible I mean so sad you know but I mean it's pointless enough to not feel valuable yet present enough to piss you off because you don't get what was promised and in this manner there are many elements here that exist without a larger reason of existence which only makes it harder for the audience to know what to focus on on what actually is worth attention and investment there's the deadline of the Empire returning for The Village's food in 10 weeks 10 weeks I shall return which turns out to be mood we have no sense of time we don't know how long we're traveling and we don't even have to defend the village anyway because the movie ends before the Empire comes so the attention invested for that deadline element is wasted there's a subplot of Kora being a bodyguard for the princess which is not only Valu because the princess isn't really in the movie but also decreases the value of other elements like the robot wasn't the robot's point to be a guardian of the royal family and to have a bond with the princess I felt a great War oh well Kora has that too whatever princess my princess you know there are so many elements here that they inhabit the same areas and diminish each other the villain's room has these tentacles to give him pleasure I guess and in the same room there's also an advice to give him pleasure as well nice why build up value for one thing when you can have two things cut that value in half they kind of summed it up what I'm getting at is that Zack Snyder has a problem with greed he wants to feature every cool element he can think of even if it means that there's no time to use them yeah yeah let's base the emotion of the scene on this connection between a villager and a robot even though neither of them are Central characters and so nobody really cares yeah yeah whenever the villain goes somewhere let's give him these mysterious red characters with books even though they never do anything and mainly just cause confusion as to what they are who invited my man blood Bro think you on the team yeah yeah let's give kora's Warriors these detailed Back stories like being genius battle commanders genius Battlefield Commander even though the commander element is never used and all that Warrior does is shoot a gun like everyone else yeah yeah birds and spiders that don't carry a larger purpose water monsters that don't do anything a love story story that's not in the story I know you're in love with her give me all of it I in other words Zack Snider has become a rich fat kid in a candy store who wants to lick every flavor there without taking the time to taste a single one whereas before his elements served purpose like how the Persian monster showcased how the world had been assembled against the Spartans now stuff is thrown in just for the sake of being there and unfortunately that's what Snider's work has become as well it's just kind of there and it is sad to see because again Snider is a visual Master he just got too powerful too quickly his head grew too big for his body to carry and the only way he'll get better is if he gets over himself if someone takes away his Rich fatate privileges don't let him write don't let him produce I mean this is just ridiculous Zack Snyder is at his best as a director bringing his vision to someone else's Simple Story no more Snider cuts no more Snider universes at least for now let's just have one movie directed by Zack Snider please I'm face to face with the devil pray is not too late my P will not me I'm
