the public's waiting [Music] do you mind no this video is sponsored by surfsharkvpn [Music] again this guy jeffrey katzenberg he's history's greatest monster i'm tired of explaining who he is so here's this point is he co-founded dreamworks to take disney down a pig tonight we're focusing on all five of their 2d movies and how it all went horribly wrong thanks sinbad [Music] which one's the best or the worst you tell me it's juice and jam time [Music] with his staff you shall do my wonders the best retelling of the story of moses since the rugrats passover special the prince of egypt from 1998 based on the hit video game that ubisoft wait based on the bible part 2 exodus the first 2d dreamworks movie and maybe the best katzenberg has always wanted to adapt this story ever since he was working at disney yet they never did so dreamworks had to be the ones to make something that disney refused a biblical epic that pushed what the pg rating can get away with a story about child death and moses freeing the slaves from his brother who rules over egypt it's all here come ramises we will show pharaoh your new baby brother moses [Music] the filmmakers consulted over 350 historians and religious leaders of different groups to tell the most authentic story they could with some poetic licensing for inspiration the artists were flown to egypt and california's death valley as some background and concept art was painted within desert locations it was worth the trip too the scope of this world feels absolutely massive like it deserves a theatrical re-release while some dated cg pops out many of it blends right in to enhance the effects when moses parts the red sea you can just feel how misty the air is the lighting and colors are gorgeous even on the more mundane scenes where they're just standing in tent the shadows casting over them as the sun peeks through the fabric gives off such a cozy vibe in the shade listening to the celebrity actor interviews you can tell they had a respect for not just the subject matter but also animation and voice acting you don't get the usual testimony of the best part of voice acting is showing up in your pajamas to me it's very reminiscent of theater which i spent a lot of time studying and rhythms of speech and the importance of each phrase and the kind of work that i've rarely had a chance to do as an actor in film and i can no longer hide in the desert while they suffer as big as this movie is the conflict is simply about two brothers slowly realizing their bond is falling apart just through animation you can see the pain in their faces moses's brother ramses is a character that feels like he's not quite sure what he wants yeah he's in the wrong but there's that hope that he could change he's far more complex than a typical villain ignoring the dated cg i can see people feeling the story goes by too fast with some side characters needing more time but i think the pacing was on point that's the magic of moving a story along through musical numbers and montages what was your favorite song because mine was deliver us and playing with the big boys not a main villain song but a henchman song you're playing with the big boys now stop this foolish mission true magician give an exhibition so yeah if you remember the story moses's goal is to free the slaves by basically showing he has the power of god and three-act structures on his side although many doubt him especially these high priests who feel he's just another illusionist oh what you turned the river into blood we can do that too we got some kool-aid packs from walmart that ain't magic i'll take no offense to moses but i feel chris angel could have liberated egypt in half the time just saying at its release prince of egypt was one of the most profitable non-disney animated movies made showing they can be a worthy competitor and yet they chose not to worry about merchandising making money off ticket sales is one thing but movies love the added benefit of licensing pixar's cars has made far more money from toys and actual ticket sales the prince of egypt sold soundtracks storybooks and a few toys but that's it they wanted to avoid going too far like selling mcdonald's happy meal toys cereal tie-ins or other glorified products examples the filmmakers joked about are burning bush night lights or red seas shower curtains hey if you want to be more shameless how about some official blood river kool-aid packs maybe cherry and racing rc cars or hey remember the part where they fed the slave babies to crocodiles hear me out a hungry hungry hippos variant on that whoever gobbles up the most hebrew babies wins good on them for the lack of merch but it's funny how this film about slavery child death and rivalries between brothers was at times marketed to be the perfect family gift on home video and goddamn comic sans like look at this commercial there's so much that this film is about it's about love it's about courage it's about believing in yourself my favorite part was the baby in the water which baby in the water you got to be specific it talks a lot about the strength in the families mommies keep their their little boys and girls safe so that's why they're there for them yes a movie about family two brothers who hate each other and will decide the fate of the hebrew people also in this shot of their movie collection they got both disney and dreamworks tapes like lion king small soldiers nice but look at that they own two copies of ants if you walk into someone's house and see two copies of ants get out while you still can this commercial is a jordan peel movie waiting to happen with ads such as these it's always important to never let marketing and press releases reflect what the film really is you'd never guess this movie was a passion project by an executive i frequently joke about being spiteful dare i say this really is an anti-disney movie the prince of egypt shows dreamworks did not just want to repeat what disney was doing their goal was to be tasteful with merchandise tell stories that pushed past comfort zones while being true to the source and it paid off a film so grand yet so intimate with the drama between two brothers the prince of egypt deserves to be known as one of the best animated films of all time [Music] by the way we'll be ranking these movies along the way it's it's el dorado [Music] [Applause] it's time to blow your load and hit the road to el dorado from the year 2000 a movie i feel everybody has seen everybody loves yet when this came out it was a financial failure and critics were just meh about it but over time this movie got way more popular as it should it's about two spaniards in the 1500s captured by some conquistadors namely the real-life historical figure hernan cortes on his way to commit mass genocide with guns and smallpox luckily our heroes escaped unharmed though it can't say the same for the population cortesmet the duo end up in the lost city of el dorado where they're mistaken for god and must do their best to keep up that appearance much like the flintstones and other beloved cartoons it's a rip-off of a live-action property the road to singapore the road to rio the road to morocco etc starring bring crosby and bob hope they were quick witted buddy comedy musicals exploring foreign lands and that perfectly describes eldorado but considering how bad this movie did at the box office and its influence they probably also got inspired by the similar movie ishtar next they will be hailed as the two messenger of god they were just a couple of songwriters who came to ishtar to break into show business at least now people can appreciate el dorado a comedy so snappy with dialogue that could only be done by actors recording in the same room or at least it feels that way and wow is the animation so energetic it's such a feel-good movie on guard yourself i will give you the honor of a quick and painless death not with that fairly upon reaching eldorado and being mistaken for gods they meet this villager shell who's just great if she's mayan i want a maya her miguel describe her character in this family film i'd say she's what you call unapologetically horny yeah did i mention this was originally gonna be pg-13 [Music] el dorado the lost city on hold that's what the crew called it as it went through five years of development hell at first katzenberg wanted a more dramatic musical like the lion king but the director's will finn and david silverman were aiming for a comedy tons of back and forth happened and will hated working on this film while doing his best to fix the script a higher up almost cut out the entire ball game scene while will wrote it back in eventually those directors left and then came in eric bergeron and don paul to direct with katzenberg assisting this was in development at the same time as prince of egypt so once that movie was finished katzenberg suddenly wanted a less serious movie to stand out like how the first two directors wanted and that's what we got it's kind of like disney's emperor's new groove another comedy release in the year 2000 taking place in a central south american colony that was originally going to be more serious where are you getting these ideas jeffrey but don't blame me i blame you it was pg-13 but they toned it down to reach a broader audience some of those edgier elements stayed in which kind of pissed off parents at the time i mean just look at chell's concept art that was even more revealing by the way have you heard the director's commentary and uh actually early visual development actually had her in a bathtub didn't it yeah but actually actually it was the first uh when she introduced herself in a in the temple the first time she used to get out of the pool of the jacuzzi that was there entirely naked but always covered by some props in the background that's right even toned down chill and the genocidal conquistadors really reparent historians and journalists the wrong way in context this movie is kind of like making a goofball comedy about two germans avoiding the holocaust and finding a lost city of jewish people well um style-wise this too is my favorite going from the dry cities of spain to the saturated tropical empire it was designed to be a mix of aztec incan and mayan culture but somehow this entire city remained hidden because nobody checked behind a waterfall that hides the entrance has nobody in this movie played a video game yes i know it takes place in the 1500s that's no excuse despite opening to a weekend with little competition and a strong marketing campaign this was when audiences were losing interest in 2d and maybe dreamworks just didn't have a name brand quite yet looking at the commercials all they could do was remind everyone that this film features elton john tim rice and hans zimmer the oscar-winning team behind the lion king elton john and lyricist tim rice the oscar-winning team from the lion king the oscar-winning team from the lion king reunited for the first time since the lion king i don't think disney executives liked elton working with the competition kill elton john at least now the road to l from death notes doritos lives on as internet memes and lou drawings as it should if only it got a sequel these are such fun likable characters that they deserve to have more done with them it's a real pick me up [Music] and now a word from our sponsor [Music] foreign [Music] and we will teach him i will teach him all he needs to know he'll stand apart from other men we'll stand beside him and together we will show [Music] now i wasn't looking forward to this one in general the term straight to video has been sullied by so many mediocre disney sequels released around this time joseph king of dreams from the year 2000 is the first home video dreamworks animated movie and was made to compete in that booming market like with prince of egypt it's a biblical story this time of joseph the 11th child of a family whose parents see him as a gift from god because of this they sewed him a robe with this atrocious chowder texture effect also he has the power to see the future in his dreams which are the only visually interesting parts of the film too bad those dreams didn't tell him about his 10 brothers getting fed up with him and his crummy jacket i've had enough of this stupid game joseph who says this is a game that's what you get for trusting a character voiced by mark hamill now i'm not familiar with this biblical story i've never seen the rugrats or the simpsons make an episode on it so i'm out of the loop here but there were moments where i realized whoa this is a prequel to prince of egypt oh man way to beat marvel at creating a cinematic universe now i remind you i have low expectations for movies made for vhs the art is an obvious downgrade and many background assets were not intended for hd displays things either don't fill the screen or just look pixelated other than some lovely dream sequences the art's fine but the musical numbers and how they correlate to the visuals are much better on the other hand the songs are so few and far between that i kept forgetting it was a musical as i was watching it even when i was writing this script i almost forgot to mention that too so as a spiritual prequel to prince of egypt themes of slavery is present which is rightfully so portrayed to be a torturous experience they still push that pg rating for about five minutes afterwards the severity of the situation turns into a real whatever like yeah slavery ain't so bad you get a place to stay some food maybe you flirt with the master's wife or her nieces just gotta do some chores what the heck the prince of egypt opens their film to the suffering of moses's people yet and joseph you got this hokey-s tune making it seem like the whole empire's coming together to make egypt the friendliest little town in the county [Music] man if i wasn't banned from my mega church for suggesting an all-female bible reboot would be a good idea i know what i'd be playing during our catholic karaoke night the tone could not be any more different like look at the prince of egypt's first few scenes and now look at joseph to a good year and to your friend you know maybe slavery wasn't so bad after all [Music] joseph king of dreams is a biblical tale i personally never seen done in other movies or cartoons so it was all new to me and i found myself engaged with the expanded universe origin story while the art and music is fun i really wanted to know what's going to happen next joseph's movie feels smaller in scale so it's perfect for the home video market but as of now this was the last dreamworks bible adaptation it's a shame we never got more but i guess they don't offer much for merchandise and require a lot more research than the typical talking animal movie i wouldn't watch joseph king of dreams in theaters but i'd say the vhs is worthy of being stolen from a ccd class [Music] [Music] like my father before me i became leader of the cimarron herd and with that honor came responsibility [Music] spirit stallion of the chimeron from 2002 otherwise known as spirits horse movie since it's easier to google it's about spirit living free amongst his kind until he's captured by man while imprisoned he must resist being tamed find a way home and make friends along the way in press interviews jeffrey katzenberg claimed the studio was inspired to create this movie because the bond between horses and humans goes back for centuries but that doesn't sound like something katzenberg would say because it doesn't involve spider jealousy for all we know he just wants to be disney at making their western star in a hooved animal remember home on the range i did not watch spirit as a kid but i remember visiting new york and eating a baskin robbins promotion the ice cream was okay sleeping at the campfire and spiel was sniffing up one guy and then he kissed him the new spirit inspired simmer on sunday now playing at baskin robbins kissing the horse anyway this is now my first viewing so i was impressed that this story about cartoon animals at no point has any of them speaking they do so well emoting with the horse's mannerisms that there's no need for voices they didn't even hire a human to make animal sounds like most cartoons these are actual horse recordings and they fit the emotions they're trying to convey with the lack of dialogue alone it really shows dreamworks is at its best strain from the disney formula they specifically chose to avoid adding a comic relief sidekick too but here's the monkey's paw the animals don't speak but spirit does have a narrator blade and celebrity voice actor matt damon provides the inner monologue and i kind of wish we could get an alternate cut without it it's so unnecessary and really undermines the expressive animation i remember the first time i saw a rattler curled up in my path this one didn't look like a rattler but i was still thinking snake oh plus the soundtrack might be too corny for a lot of people this is some primo deviantart amv furry bait and i'm taking it don't push [Music] other flaws include more jarring cg assets like these ps2 characters walking around to the studio they're treated like a high-tech selling point it's not traditional anymore it's not digital so i've been calling it traditional okay that sounds stupid but it has a wikipedia page i'm pissed distracting as the effects may be the 2d animation was a serious challenge the anatomy of horses are so complex that they hired disney veteran james baxter to be the animation supervisor it was quite daunting at the beginning because when i first started to draw horses i suddenly realized how little i knew so we went to experts um anatomy experts anything that we could get our hands on to figure out what makes these animals work this is a subject that has confused many many people there are pictures of leonardo da vinci struggling with this view himself okay so you know james baxter from adventure time the horse that's a tribute to the same man i thought he was a horse to reference his work on spirit but no it's a reference to the time he was lecturing at the cal arts college and somebody asked him to draw a horse balancing on a ball to which james simply replied something along the lines of hell no yeah horses are hard to do so it's amazing how good this movie can look my favorite subtle design choice is spirit's main they chopped off much of it upon him getting captured so it really helps illustrate how much time has passed you'll notice it'll grow back as the film goes on and the adventurous music score by hans zimmer makes me wish he could do more westerns [Music] and this story is one of the most tragic moments in animation that no one ever talks about yet it's real gut wrenching i'll straight up say this is one of dreamworks's most underappreciated although the ending is a little too clean cut especially if you know your history about railroads and how this movie is kind of brushing historically bad stuff under the rug the ending should not be this happy at the same time a lot of reviewers didn't like how this film was another white people bad native americans in the environment good type of film which considering the time this movie takes place um hey let me read you this actual old review from theslant.com possibly the most disturbing animated film ever made spirit tells the sexed up story of an untamed anatomically incorrect mustang that means he doesn't have a thingy the horses in this politically correct western wonderland must be itching for a disney chorale just as spirit slips and slides into the world a quick stare and lick at his glowing mother insinuates both a cryptic oedipus complex and an insatiable oral fixation once spirit meets little creek his native american kindred spirit this hokey tune for leftist taunt posts and posits an idyllic long-lost west tamed by what could easily be mistaken for abraham lincoln's animal incarnation for a freedom fighter spirit is a hardcore traditionalist still it's refreshing to hear spirit acknowledge the pervasive sense of interspecial sexual energy with his matt damon voice damn hope that review didn't contribute to low box office numbers spirit was another financial disappointment especially compared to shrek which released a year prior part of it was blamed on 2d while i say they should not have released this movie after star wars and spider-man but 15 years after this movie they made a netflix series about little girls who write spirit is this its own continuity or did it get captured again i don't know just appreciate the movie as is [Music] and now a word from our sponsor foreign [Music] the following entertainment experience has been designated fantasy warning presentation has been reviewed for complete historical accuracy [Music] well here we are in 2003 with the final film on the list sinbad legend of the seven seas starring brad pitt a movie that was so much of a financial and critical failure that it nearly killed the studio and made the new york post title it a review animated sinbad is so bad it's the pits i'll talk more about the near death of the studios soon but does sinbad warrant the hate well it's just a simple adventure film of the title character and his crew being framed for a crime and must prove their innocence by retrieving a magical book that is magic don't worry about what it does sinbad is an overly confident pirate and is paired up with marina a politician turned adventurer tired of this man's bs that's exactly why women shouldn't drive bro you ever been to la i don't think anyone should drive we got to build a monorail or something look at me i don't even have a steering wheel on this thing i'm not kidding i'm straight up trapped up here for the most part this thing's been running for 10 years it doesn't want to stop please god help who's bad sin bad men what's funny about marina is that she's an ambassador yet some tv spots refer to her as a princess he was a thief she was a princess maybe a mistake or a marketing choice her and sinbad have the typical dynamic of hating each other for the most part while they face many cg creatures on their journey of all the films reviewed tonight the 3d is the most jarring here it's like 50 of the film if you can get past that it's fun and barely much else but the climax surprise me rather than another overblown boss battle they end on a smaller scale with a more focus on character motives pretty impressive now don't get me wrong as jarring as these creatures are in 2d space their designs are so memorable and then you have the main antagonist and you are eris the goddess of discord no doubt you've seen my likeness on the temple walls if you mean tv then yes i loved you and billion mandy harris has a very simplistic design but the way she moves is a whole nother level animated smoke morphing effects and dynamic hair all in one character she has to be among the most difficult 2d characters to draw clearly any animator who signed on for this had a death wish or was just very horny hey what's that in my youtube recommendations oh man click on that home slice [Applause] now of course this movie is based on sinbad the sailor a series of fables that goes back to the 14th century very often in middle eastern cultures there's been many adaptations but back in 1992 disney announced upcoming films based on sinbad pocahontas homer's odyssey king of the jungle swan lake song of the sea and something called silly hillbillies on mars no idea what that is many of those never got made by disney but when katzenberg left the studio to co-found dreamworks he brought along sinbad and other unused ideas 11 years after that announcement sinbad was made but not without a forgotten controversy near the release several publications pointed out how sinbad was a story involving arabian characters yet here he's from sicily greece as well as aries a greek goddess in fact many if not all references to anything in arabic have been removed from the film a lot of different publications felt this was closer to homer's odyssey than sinbad for this 2003 movie at a time when there was so much focus on what was going on overseas sinbad could have been among the few wide release movies starring a middle eastern character to be shown in a positive light yet they chose to neglect that in an old interview with the film's writer john logan who also wrote gladiator he talks about how dreamworks gave him several sinbad stories to read the arabian nights version along with versions that were persian roman greek to that he said i was still so much in gladiator mode that i was like yes greek and roman this is a world i know the persian sinbad on the other hand was just a little too much work for me seems like he wrote what he was already familiar with and may have been worried about portraying another culture badly but that's odd considering how much research dreamworks did for the accuracy of prince of egypt also insulting was early into the film's production a lecture who often discusses arabic portrayals and media jack g shaheen wrote letters to katzenberg requesting to be a consultant on the film like he was for prince of egypt this was before the animation process had begun no response to the letters were made until months before the film's release where he was shown a near-completed cut any changes jack requested were given too late into production in jack shaheen's book guilty hollywood's verdict on arabs after 9 11 jack had this to say about sinbad kazenburg's sinbad should be relegated to alibaba's cave permanently the film distorts cinema history and classic arabian night's folk tales as well screenwriter john logan who omits all things arab and sinbad did write arab slavers into gladiator a dreamworks movie that has nothing to do with the middle east now that's a bad sin on a lighter note let me read you part of this actual review from the phoenix new times speaking of queens not since the rotel dorado as a studio cartoon played so unabashedly gay sinbad is sent out on his quest in order to save the life of his old friend prince proteus whom the two touchy sinbad says he met during a sword fight one presumes it wasn't at david geffen's house who's steven geffen what did he do exactly there's copious attention given the hard dangerly pointy nipples of kale a bare-chested first mate oh get a shirt on before you poke someone's eye out and there's a long loving shot of sinbad's partially revealed ass cheek at least the movie doesn't skimp out on accurate portrayals of long voyages and in close quarters where men are men and women what is with these reviews anyway to rank sinbad i'd probably say it's amongst the weakest of the 2d films but even in that lower tier it's still a fun action movie maybe it could have done better had it not released in the middle of summer between finding nemo and pirates of the caribbean it does not deserve to be remembered for losing 125 million dollars which nearly bankrupted dreamworks not just the animation department but live action 2. in just 6 years of releasing films dreamworks almost went under so something had to change their biggest box office hit was shrek 1. so if they wanted to remain afloat they had to repeat the formula cg in your face attitudes with some pop culture humor 2d was outdated and that's where theaters are now but i always say cg is no longer impressive it's just standard someday one of the bigger studios are going to try 2d again while the disney live action remakes are hated by many animation fans they make a lot of money and i feel it shows the nostalgia for that 90s era of animation has really grown amongst the mainstream maybe that's a sign people are ready for more 2d [Music] don't give up challenge again from dreamworks pictures prepare yourself for power i will not be the weak link for destiny things cannot be as they were for miracles now is the time for the story that changed the world forever [Music] the prince of egypt rated pg starts friday december 18th i still don't believe it i think i'm gonna wake up in about two seconds
