Ranking Every DC Universe - A Tier List

[Music] I love ranking stuff no let me start that again okay we love ranking stuff yeah we love ranking stuff we're ranking I love ranking bass do you you know those little marionette you know Little Drummer Boy sure okay you know those guys The Little Drummer Boy parents are killed by Bandits and throw a little marionette ax into into his dad you seen that Cliff No you try it down it's great so this week we are ranking a bunch of DC universes across the movies the TV shows comic books video games video games so look we're probably not going to hit on maybe one that you've thought of and we're absolutely not going to hit on your favorite and we're doing it on purpose that's right we're skipping the SN verse that's no that will be it here please leave a like let's kick things off Mason with the Arkham verse from the Arkham video game series and upcoming Suicide Squad game which everybody is mad at I love it yeah this is going to rank pretty high I tell you what but what about this it is the wider DC Universe but it's very very at the moment at least Batman focused okay sure sure is that okay to you though is that okay yeah I mean a lot of these are Batman Focus to be fair are you suggesting that I that I should be mad that Rocksteady didn't cover every conceivable dcct Superman came in and went I'll do it put your car away you're hitting too many people with it the car's broken down anyway it's the first one you know what I love the character designs I love some people are like these guys are too boxy these some boxy boys oh James if we're going to if we're going to lower our ranking due to boxy boys there's going to be some classic stuff here that is going to be dropped down the ranks very quickly this is mostly Batman universes and boxy boys just looking at this absolutely and look you know what I love about the Arkham universe is it wasn't an origin story except for Batman Arkham Origins which definitely was now that I finished this sentence that came later that came later but what I love about it is when when we start with Batman Arkham Asylum it's already a fully realized Universe we've already seemingly had a couple of robins he's met everyone he's met everyone and shook their hands he's punched most of them nice to meet you Alfred the butler he said that's what he said I love that I think it's up there just this once I'm going to take your feelings into account I'm thinking you don't think this is s tier the top level I think it's an Incredible Universe but I also think that I didn't love the last game I think that's also cuz it got bogged down in Riddler trophies and whatever sure yeah so I would for me personally I would give it an a I'm perfectly happy to put it in the a tier next up yes Smallville okay I think this did a lot of good things for DC television M I think as an that's right I remember being super excited for it super excited thank you and the first season I'm like wow this is great sure they dragged this origin out way too long and you know the Mandate was no tights no flights exactly and even though they eventually did that at the very very very end but I think there's a lot of good stuff in Smallville despite dropping off at probably ceased to yes but we have since gone back a few times we've dipped our toes back in I've watched clips on YouTube uh look and yeah you're absolutely right it did get increasingly weird that you know Superman traditionally the one of the earliest superheroes in the DC Universe just watched all his Pals get costumes and super abilities and start publicly fighting crime and he's still like I'm not sure about this Crystal yeah exactly you should just put it in the thing see what it does just God just take a chance on a crystal dude I think now people would be like Boo that sucks but you got to think about the that it came out in I'm going to say C okay let's but a solid C what about this DC Comics now we're going to get more specific for heard of them we're just talking the general comic book Universe not El worlds and whatever and I know they've rebooted multiple times and we'll talk about New 52 in a bit but just just your Mainline stuff just as they currently stand yeah I think comic books are better than ever I reckon the writing's better than ever I reckon the Art's better than ever I reckon it's pretty great okay so you're going to give this an st an for like 100 years of you know pretty solid work yeah I think so I think they've earned it I think hundreds if not thousands of professional writers artists iners colorists uh letterers and so forth working you know in concert as hard as they possibly can for nearly 100 years I think they've earned an S tier on this video all right I'll begrudgingly give that one to you Mason I'm not happy about it no no no no no no stay on your toes everybody at DC Comics if you give us another there's 40 Jokers which which one's the real jokeer I swear to God yeah we'll bump you down to a d uh The Dark Knight universe so what are we thinking here we've got your Batman Begins we've got your Dark Knights we've got the Dark Knight Rises with a very boxy boy that's right now there any spin-off Comics remember they did some animated shorts after Batman Begins which were like Loosely tied in but they're not really I mean I love this universe I think it's great I know people don't love Dark Knight Rises and I know in Hinds side people are like well it's very it's too grounded or maybe it's too silly what do people think it can be both it can be both you can hate the same thing for diametrically opposed reasons depending on who you're arguing with on the internet yeah look I think if the third one was a stronger entry this would be an S yeah but I'm going to make it an a for Heath LED's performance alone there it is any objections uh I don't like the fact that the uh the bat pod bat cycle is just in the tumbler why would that be a thing well I'm diametrically opposed I think that's a good thing actually yeah right what do you think about that that's great let's jump backwards in time whoa I'm going to put these two go with me on this [ __ ] [ __ ] hell all right language I hit a clock on the way through that's why I swore then okay I hit a clock we'll beep it out the clock we're going to go back to the Batman 66 Wonder Woman 77 Universe they were separate shows but they've since been combined in comics it's just the way we're doing it I think these are iconic I think they gave and then maintained the popularity of these characters for decades absolutely probably a b ouch yeah look I I mean I absolutely watch this every day after school cuz that's when it was on TV in Australia loved it all right so we we bumping it up then let's bumping it up to a let's do it up to a we're bumping up to a for some days you can't get rid of a ball oh my God you're absolutely right yeah next up we've got might be a bit early but we've caught glimpses of it the DCU so the end of The Flash is technically the DCU Maybe some of it okay so this is the at this point upcoming DC movie slate yes so Blue Beetle there going to be Superman Superman Legacy going to be an animated series there's a Batman and his son movie happening that's right there's a yep uhhuh they might be doing Wonder Woman 3 or rebooting it we're getting Aquaman 2 which is still like a it's really part of the last thing and whatever I mean we can't rank this it's nothing yet and yet we must all right so that is the rules of the the tier ranking system system well off the back of the flash I'm giving it a d and that is generous but if you want to bump this up that's fine no I can't be bothered that's the thing that's the twist here looking on the one hand I want to have a lot of faith in this you know love James gun as a filmmaker hoping he will do well steering the ship over at the DC movies and such I I think we could we could say oh it's a tier because we think we we're we're going to we're going to stay posy on the internet yeah but also we don't have to and they're not paying us to do that no that's right so put it wherever you said whatever it was next up we've got the DC Animated Universe and this starts at Batman the Animated Series that's right moves into Superman Justice League various other spin-offs and movies and things like that mask of the fantasm it bleeds into other meteor and all sorts of other things Batman Beyond I think this is great stuff I also think it's great Stu really solid Universe building starts with Batman which you think is not enough but then you just stay with me it blossoms out from there oh then that is enough I think yeah a lot of what we grew up with was informed by this more than the Burton movies for me great voice casting all around Kevin Conroy's Batman to to everybody else whoever else is in it whoever all the others I can name names but I'd just be boring Myself by naming all the names that I know who did all the voices agreed just a just a ton of fun agreed I'm giving that an S let's put it in the S tier how's about this bit controversial might not even belong here Watchmen now what we including here we're including I imagine Alan Moore and Steve gibbons's Original Classic the 12 issues yep are we including the movie or the TV series let's just say all Watchmen okay that's handy do we include Doomsday Clock yes we must include Doomsday Clock Curse of the Black Pearl where we got to include before Watchmen and here's the thing a lot of that stuff isn't any good some of it is some of it's very good for example the original 12 is miniseries Watchman I disagree that's probably the weakest element Watchman the original series is so good and that's not a particularly original take it is so good but I feel like all the the spin-off stuff has some value to it I think Dooms Day clock was a pretty compelling narrative and sure it took like four years to come out the problem with that sequel for me was that it crossed over with all the mainline DC stuff and I think initially when I started that I was like this is actually an okay sequel in itself yeah there were a couple of new characters a couple of like sort of mime style characters M duck whatever they M and Duck and I think they new characters but I think they really suited yeah the the universe of of Watchmen and yeah I think the part where it does fall down is how they had to T they had to for people who don't know they had to tie it into the DC Universe the mainline DC Universe and also they blamed all the editorial decisions of the previous 10 years of the DC Universe on Dr Manhattan a fictional man if you recall they're like oh you remember when we rebooted the DC Universe and Superman was weird and mean and nobody liked him well that's cuz Dr Manhattan kicked a can and it changed everything all right you know what I love the the TV series me too I really like the TV which is sequel to the comic book specifically and you know I I personally think that the Zack Snider Watchman adaptation is pretty good agree it's not the same as the original like in thematically and tonally and they took the squid out they did take the squid out that's what I was going to say thematically and tonally they took the squid out perhaps inadvertently I think it does kind of reflect the superhero genre at the time the present day like the original did you know they're all wearing the weird rubber muscle suits and the absolutely you and they're like reveling in the violence and throwing people through walls and stuff like that I think it's a satire probably I don't think I think he just W what pages look good but again I agree with you I think it's a pretty I mean had you adapt that and I think he did a pretty good job so let's put that in there's no way you can't put it in watch it's you put it in s what are you doing what are you doing James I I don't work for you but I am going to put it in s Okay Lego Batman we can include the games and the movies I know they're not the same universe and there's other various things I like Lego Batman I think it's a be on the whole I'm largely indifferent to Lego Batman was it will Anette as the voice of Batman that's pretty fun I am Batman in that version but there's other versions yeah he's fun he's cool he's in the Lego movies yeah yeah I couldn't tell you anything that happens in it except he lobster thermador that's all I remember that's all you need to know okay great then it's worth a bit as far as I'm concerned how about this one I'm putting these together because they sort of go together and also Comics have crossed them over the Christopher reev Tim Burton and I guess Joel schume marker Batman movies now this is controversial James fact you you would combine all these well I didn't combine them together in the first place they did that this is their fault who's they Dr Manhattan is Dr Manhattan in the room with us right now probably he could be he could oh he could be James I'm scared he could be either of us and we don't know so the Burton and schoe marker movies were originally in the same continuity we know now they aren't anymore and then they brought the Chris reev and Tim Burton movies together in the comic books and also the flash [ __ ] around with all of that but that's a that's a I don't want to talk I don't want to talk about that all right so I've just put them together as old school DC movies that's where that's that's where this is really look it's an a right it's at least an a for Christopher re's performance alone exactly he's the best that guy completely agree and I know not all these movies are great but he was always great in them that is true yeah and you know the other ones are pretty they're all right some of them some of them are all right okay next up we have the new 52 okay which one is this again that's the reboot in like the early 2010s okay is this the one that was Dr Manhattan's fault or was there another one after that is that DC rebirth rebirth I think I don't know I don't remember which ones I'm giving this an F James I can't remember how much of it was good and how much it was bad I did read a Scott sniders Batman's very good but the fact that they keep doing this this is just a symbol for them just constantly rebooting you know I said how much I love the comic books earlier Y and I give him an S tier uh I don't like this this is my least favorite aspect of DC Comics they got a big sales boost with crisis on infinite Earth in like 1985 and they're like let's do this every 5 to 10 years and then that got him big sales boost and they're like let's do it every three years as soon it'll be every six months can't wait but I do think there are some great stories within that because if you're telling good stories I don't care what the universe is whatever Court of ours you know oh yeah people like that one new 52 the one where Commissioner Gordon was in the robot B yeah that was that was a moment was a moment in time next up we've got the Injustice universe so this is a video game from the creators of Mortal Kombat everybody watching this probably knows that yep and it was like What if uh what if everything in the DC Universe but a little bit more extreme because everybody loves to do a murder and also everybody's taking a pill that makes them Superman what do you think that uh but then the comic book actually very compell there was also an animated movie I love the Injustice Universe I think they're probably bringing into live action at some point so they can make an excuse for Superman to kill a bunch of people that's true yeah again there's a lot of like what if Superman but evil speaking of something you do every 6 months yeah we know what about Superman if he was extra nice do you ever think about that what about a universe where he was kind yeah I like the concept but I think the execution really rocked solid especially for a fighting game when are the stories of them ever very good that's true I think it's an a there you go we're going to do the Snider verse that includes Wonder Woman Aquaman it's not just the Zack Snider movies interesting that's an interesting take you've got there well it's all technically sort of related and I guess that also means that the Weeden verse is part of that cuz the Weeden verse is one movie where else am I going to put it on its own God this you are you are treading some Dangerous Ground Jos Sweden's jce weig in the same universe as Zack snid Justice League again I didn't make these decisions they bought that movie out I didn't make it all right okay okay ultimately you know with the various highs and lows of Zack Snider and Jos Weeden not saying which is which where would you put this ultimately where does it average out in total it's probably a c interesting yeah I really like his Justice League cut the Weeden one the Snider one I do I genuinely do maybe this is a b it might be a b but Justice weag in the flash he bring it right down woman too okay but that brings it down but then and I mean I know you mentioned Zack sn's Justice League but what about specifically the sequence where Aquaman jumps in the water and then Batman's just there by himself and then all those women in in sweaters are like you know that bit oh yeah sing at him that jumps it up again I think you're right this is an e you're right Mason you just said it was a c how would you feel about a b I'm fine with the B I think a lot of the problems with this is interference I think it could have been higher even if it had a solid Vision they didn't [ __ ] with even if I didn't like it I could be like well at least it's like one thing yeah at least it's it's thematically similar at least it's you know tonally the same if they didn't mess with it at least we might have had a Batman Solo movie featuring Ben Affleck but we don't so you know just to clarify if you go yeah if you go looking for that you're not you're not going to find it yeah you're not going to find it unless it's in Another Universe speaking of Mason else worlds there's so many of these oh my God so we got Superman redon where he's Russian around Batman Gotham by Gaslight that's right Superman TR Brit is another example oh written by John C sure what if Superman landed in England who gives a [ __ ] how about that wow um seems like you can't say anything anymore James well technically this is like this is Injustice also and and probably some other things that we've mentioned here but I I quite like the elor stories AB even if I don't love the story I just love a weed swing and you can kind of do anything kill anybody love all of that that's wonderful yeah how do you feel about a bee I love a bee yeah you're a bit of a bee mate I tell you that much come on here we go Frank Miller's all the DC stuff he's done now you mentioned this earlier to me before we started recording some of it's sort of linked yeah see that's what I'm saying like Batman you're saying Batman year won and say Batman The Dark Knight Returns potentially are the same Batman yeah maybe I'm sure I'm sure in Frank Miller's mind they are the same Batman obviously they would be and he's done other stuff and allar Batman and Robin yeah and that's I don't know where that sits and you know sequels to the Dark Knight Returns whatever look that's a mixed bag for sure it though how many have there been four he didn't write three that's right well he he didn't have a big hand in it at least I mean The Dark Knight Returns and Batman you won I mean that in itself phenomenal phenomenal yeah so what do you reckon is it s i mean all the movies are like this actually draws a lot of inspiration from then they name those two Comics yeah yeah yeah that's true yeah so that's important I think I re I'm going to say a if I had if I had to pick one if you don't include any of the other things besides Batman you're one of the Dark Knight Returns it would be an S you've just included all the bad stuff that's bad and nobody likes and it's stupid yeah and also the Weeden universe is in this one as well absolutely it is that's correct how's about this this is unfair putting these together but I'm doing it and you could stop right now no I'm doing it the DC animated movies just all of them this is the new stuff some of which has a shared Universe some of which are just individual some are based on comic books like there's a Killing Joke one uh there's justice league dark there's a bunch of adaptation of comics like Superman red Sun that you mentioned exactly again this is a mixed bag I agree and I got to tell you I'm not really that interested in it and I think one thing that Alan Mo hates about adaptations of his work in a lot of cases is they're bad but also it sort of disrespects the medium of comics to be like it's not legitimate if it's just a comic book it has to be want see it move yeah if you yeah I don't disagree I think you know Superman red Hood's great I think the flasho movie is pretty solid as well okay but see that's the thing you're saying they're pretty solid yeah they're okay let's give it an okay tier then let's see yeah all right that's okay it's probably a bit unfair but I haven't seen them all so it would be unfair for me to rank them higher or lower that's very true this last one we're going to do I've just grouped together the arrowe Gotham Superman and Lois Black Lightning Gotham Knights Titan Swamp Thing penny worth the origin of Batman's butler probably others now is this because this is the last piece of your list and you just lumped everything left over into it that and it's like same era you know okay sure sure sure so we include there's Lo and Clark in here Mas that's an earlier era and there's no Lewis and Clark that's an even earlier era of Discovery now look I think a lot of this stuff paved the way for things they wanted to do in movies and often couldn't I mean I love how like for example Gotham it just went we're doing our own thing uhuh yeah this is our own version of the Universe I like that the Ridler in the penguin in love in that yeah probably does that happen I don't know okay ask him I saw that on Twitter but maybe it was just wishful thinking maybe it is I'm going to give this a b all right I mean swamp thing's incredible right yeah the two episodes they before they canel it no I know there's a lot of things that I didn't mention here I didn't mention the Harley Quinn animated TV series you mentioned that did I okay I didn't mention Teen Titans Go your favorite Universe Earth 26 the zoo crew Captain CARiD is amazing zoo crew yep exactly you did mention it you mentioned all of those Earth zero the bazara universe Green Lantern Jonah Hex Constantine all movies we've looked at on this channel could we just lump them all together stuff we mention and let's give it an S done cuz it's all good stuff the S is for stuff next up we've got the elor stories now James gun in the DCU has bundled the movies that aren't in the mainline universe and he's put them in their own little box oh and he's calling that elor that's right and we're going to be getting more of these and some of the animated movies and shows coming up might be part of this but just right now we're talking about the movie Joker and the movie the Batman okay well I really enjoyed the movie The Batman I did not care for the movie Joker I think it's a valiant attempt like I like the idea of doing something like that but I also did not love the movie The Joker I think it is a valiant attempt to just do a movie about whatever and convince an attempt to convince people that it is a comic book movie by using some of the names of comic book characters yes and to trick people into thinking man scor says he had anything to do with it at all which he didn't no he didn't I think he produced or something he was considering doing something minor early on but then he didn't okay well look I think in future my ranking of this universe will change uh I'm that's very bold of you to say very bold but I'll say anything it's very bold yeah and that's primarily because the next one's going to be a musical the next Joker movie is going to be musical which I think should have remained a secret until opening night I think that would have been very funny to see the people who you know massively enjoyed the movie Joker us and suddenly being confronted with whatever it's going to be I hate being confronted by whatever it's going to be I like to know you know yeah yeah yeah yeah but I agree with you I think on all of this and I think the Batman is genuinely terrific so I guess this probably have to fall into a B I was going to say a b also anyways if you got any uh other opinions I'm sure you do please feel free to leave them below that was my last opinion yeah no this is for others this is you thank
