keeping them safe getting them not to chew then you get to seven months or nine months and you're focused on exercise and exposure then you get to year and you start to clamp down with training and and recall and not pulling and and not jumping on people there's consequences to behavior then you get to a year and a half and you've got a well-trained happy dog [Music] age-appropriateness is the single biggest factor in raising a happy healthy and well-trained dog you're not going to do the same thing that you do with a three-month-old dog than you are with a nine-month-old dog there are certain things you have to let go at three months and you have to enforce at nine months i'm gonna go through all of the ages all of the fear periods that's all age appropriateness means it means all these periods in life you've heard me talk about fear periods before i'm going to go through all of them tell you what you should do in that time what you need to focus on and what you need to let go okay this is a very important video if you have a dog that's under a year and a half once they're a year and a half they're essentially an adult there's all these periods before if you have a two-year-old and you give anyone with a two-year-old who's had one you give them a plate and it's got broccoli on it or broccoli ends up in their food and in their mouth they might lie on the floor and freak the heck out and all of us who've had two-year-olds go yeah that's how two-year-olds act some of them and that's normal if your 14 year old does that because he got a piece of broccoli in his mouth and he lies on the ground and he cries in wails then you might want to call a professional because you have a big problem it's not that different with dogs you need to focus on certain things when they're four months and focus on certain things when they're a year they're very different and if you can do this you're gonna have a dog like prince or a dog like bosco because i am super into age appropriateness all right let's do this zero to eight weeks not going to go into this because 99 of you don't have the dog zero to eight weeks but it is a period of time that's important they need to be with their mother they need to be their father less than their mother but their father and they need to be with their siblings and they need to feel safe okay that's the most important thing all right two months which is eight weeks to four months they need to feel safe in this period of time you don't need to be like let's get the dog out let's get the dog with other dogs they need to feel safe they should sleep in the bed with you or they can sleep in the bed with you at this time that's not good for potty training but that's good for safeness okay my dog bosco slept in the bed with us for like i don't know a year two i don't know how long you've heard me talk about sleeping in the bed that's for aggression and reactivity your dog needs to be out of the bed when they're aggressive and reactive to other dogs okay or to people of course out of the bed okay but at young age they can be in the bed with you this is feeling safe time this is potty training time okay so yes i said they can sleep in the bed but that's bad for potty training but it's good for safeness this is potty training that's really your only training goal at this age is potty training over and over again watch my potty training videos maybe some recalls okay come here buddy and the little puppy runs to you and you say well what a good boy maybe give him a little treat but we're not going doing go get method at this age and there is going to be some chewing at the end of this stage all right that's the main thing feel safe focus on potty training four months to seven months this is the teething chew toy stage i am gonna make a chew toy video in the next couple days i want you to i've made it before you can go back and look but i'm gonna make a new in the next couple days watch that if you have a dog between uh four months and nine months okay i'm gonna post that soon all right teething lots of chew toys you need to start getting them outside a little bit now maybe going on some walks are you gonna do my leash method when they're this age no don't worry about stopping and giving giving them a little correction their brain is somewhere else at this age they are out of their minds okay you do not need to be hardcore on coming on lease training you don't need to be hardcore on anything except giving them satiating them with proper chew toys and maybe getting them with some dogs or one dog that they can jump on and they can mouth and they can do to that dog the stuff that they want to do to you or to your five-year-old kid at home all right satiation you've seen me talk about that in the past too but again this is really just they're becoming an adult they're teething more they've got more energy than they did before that's why i say get them out a little bit more they'll they'll mentally tire it out if you're going on some walks or you're letting them run around outside more stuff like that okay but again they're out of their minds so be patient remember my two-year-old child thing two-year-old children when they're freaking out like that they're they're out of their minds you're not gonna freak out because you know their brains changing their brain's changing at this stage as well so don't freak out that your dog is barking or your dog is pulling or your dog isn't coming or anything like that all right seven months to to a year this is the exercise phase your dog is now has a lot of exercise requirements especially as you get to a year well nine months to a year they're also big they're like full grown so you're like all of a sudden like my god i have a big crazy dog yeah it's time to up the exercise they're not four months anymore they're not two months when they slept a bunch they are almost an adult and they need to be getting out being mentally stimulated this is also the toughest time to own your dog as i've always said nine months to a year why is that they're big they're strong they're still out of their minds okay and they're going through a fear period right kids that are 17 16 15 years old which would be kind of comparable to this agent and dog they can do algebra in school but they are not mature yet your dog might be able to learn things but it still is not mature it's still going to go to the dog park and totally when you say come blow you off and that's normal okay this is the time though when you start the go get method okay i'll link to the goget method right now to see what that is you start doing this around nine months but more even so a year so you're going to train them to come to you with treats even in this time seven months to a year but towards a year nine months ten months eleven months you're gonna start to say go get the go get method because they can handle it mentally they can start to get it oh the guy's gonna come get me if you do that at six month doug can't understand it but about a year the dog can really start understanding it the go get method they can also at around a year towards the tail end of this fear period they can start to when you stop and you give them a little tiny correction right they leave you give them a little trying connection they go oh they can start to understand that they can't understand that in six months their brain is somewhere else okay so this is the exercise phase this is also the exposure phase they are in a fear period that means you should actually get them exposed to things in the middle of the fear period nine months to a year don't wait till a year and a half to take them on hikes and to take them to uh uh different places and farmers markets and take them to a mall don't wait then because they've already gone through the fear period and if you haven't exposed them to stuff during the fear period they might be fearful right this is that's why the board and train is the best time at nine months to a year because they swim and they do all this stuff you ever notice during my private sessions why i almost always if it's somewhat warm out try to get the dogs in the pool especially if they're nine months 10 months 11 months a year because i want them to feel weightlessness it's a weird feeling to be in a pool swimming i want them to experience that so that at a year and a half they're not scared of water but you have to do it during that brain change time okay when they are actually kind of afraid to do it all right i'm not forcing them okay all right exposure and exercise fear period seven months or a little more nine months to a year all right a year to year and a half this is when you can start getting serious about training year to year and a half we are coming to get you when you don't come to us you are not pulling on the leash anymore we realize when you're a puppy joel said to let it go if the dog pulls or barks on the leash and don't be too hardcore we're over it at this point you're an adult it's time to act like an adult you're a teenager you're preparing them your kid teenager you're preparing them for life some say a tough world out there with bosses and people who aren't going to be nice to them we need to prepare them for that in the house in a loving way but prepare them for the world you need to prepare you need to now be like you're a year old it's time to stop this this nonsense okay your dog isn't gonna leave your home like a child might but it's time to their brain can handle the it's enough pulling it's enough just ignoring me when i say come we are over it okay this is training time this is quote unquote training time it's all training it's all raising something which is training but this is now training time all right and by a year and a half your dog is an adult your dog is kind of your person the personality of a dog at a year is set a year and a half is set all right um people call me all the time and they go my dog was pretty good like he's just a lab and came from a good breeder and then you know he would go and he'd kind of ignore dogs then a year and a half he went at a dog or or they didn't even say the age and i go then they go oh then he kind of nipped at a dog and growled and or got on top of the dog at the dog park and i go oh is your dog a year and a half and they go how'd you know well it's because at a year and a half things can switch they become an adult what are adults how are adults different than kids many reasons one is they're more serious kids a nine month old dog should come out here and be just like oh my god a dog and be happy and playing and the dog shouldn't come out here and go oh a dog i don't care about that dog i'm just gonna cruise around and nine months when that happens at nine months with a dog out here i go listen you gotta your dog should be happier to see dogs because at a year if he's not happy at nine months he's gonna not really be happy at a year and a half then it a year it becomes a little growl at the dog then in a year and a half it becomes a get away from me and a bite at the dog but i can see that at nine months because they should be at a certain place at nine months again age appropriateness and so most people come out here and they go yeah my dog my nine month old ignores dogs and it looks normal on its face that seems okay and normal it's not okay or normal however and i'm not saying you 100 of the time the dog will go at a dog at a year and a half but 70 of the time it will it's a high percentage for something that nobody sees at nine months as a problem okay this is all age appropriateness what you need to do with these ages and what you need to not do in these different stages and what you need to focus on and people call me with like seven-year-old dogs and they're like yeah we need to fix this and this and this and i'm like your dog's my age like i'm 45 my fundamental personality is not changing at this point i can change and i hope to change for the better in ways but i'm essentially who i am at this point probably 10 years ago probably 20 years ago i was really who i am and so can we help a dog at seven six years old nine years old yes but they are who they are so you want to raise them with what i just said focus on the big stuff don't worry about the little stuff be age appropriate in all these ages and you won't have problems at a year and a half and going forward but don't focus on training super early on focus on keeping them safe getting them not to chew then you get to seven months or nine months and you're focused on exercise and exposure then you get to year and you start to clamp down with training and and recall and not pulling and and not jumping on people there's consequences to behavior then you get to a year and a half and you've got a well-trained happy dog i was about to say it's not rocket science but i've never seen a video like this before so it seems to be that not many people know or have explained it like i'm explaining it and this is simply from doing a board and train and doing so much with so many dogs over so many i didn't just teach classes where dogs came in worked with me for an hour and then were gone like i've raised so many dogs that i've seen nine-month-olds come in for 15 years and they do and then i see them for weeks while they're here so i've seen all this okay so that's the phases you guys so guys that's it follow this this might be the most important video i've ever done i mean to be honest with you if you think about it if you have a four-month-old dog and you see this video you're ahead of the game and this might not be something you've ever heard and i hopefully spelled it out to you pretty clearly if you like this video if this video helped you please hit that subscribe button i'm going to do more of these and i'm going to do that chew toy video in the next couple days
