so welcome to the pt 658 boat house we are here trying to film the uh when the willamette jet boat tours come here and see the boat so we've got it all set up for tourists uh we're in the boathouse inside the swan island lagoon you see way down there is the launching ramp is the public boat ramp i think it's right there anyway so the jet boats are going to come here and they're going to dock right there and they're going to come in here and then look about some of our some of our um displays here and then be able to go on to the boat and after they do that they'll be able to eat a dinner and so and there's just some background information about the boat and over here we have some pt boat models here's a pt109 and a higgins 78 foot from 240 from bob hayward anyway so we have some displays set up down here there's a piece of the hull the two layers you can see how it's constructed with the rivets and the canvas in between the inner and outer layer then we got the rotating picture displays here and then we have a table down here where we're going to be selling souvenirs we have t-shirts and stuff like that so here's some t-shirts you can buy pretty cool and then we've got other stuff that we sell we've got uh challenge coins and dvd movies and magazines books dickwasha check made this magazine for us and coffee cups and hats and some different books russ hamich wrote them yeah so basically the people come in and have a briefing and then they'll walk down here next to the boat and see all the stuff up close and people didn't realize that these pt boats are wooden boats all people don't know that they're made out of mahogany planks and these are real torpedoes they're uh on loan from a museum up in keyport washington and we're on a boat so it's rocking and rolling as you can tell so we have these stairs you can walk up the stairs and go on to the boat so the first thing you see is the 40 millimeter bofors cannon it's all set up and then also back here is the smoke generator titanium tetrachloride and the depth charge mark six with a 420 pound total weight and a variable fuse indicator right there called the pistol and then we have another depth charge right over here so the people will come on board and walk up here see the midship section of the boat and here is the midship's 20 millimeter boat uh erlikon cannon and it's stored straight up so that it is easier to get around because it is a boat and then this is a section of the gas tank it's a self-sealing rubber lined gas tank just like on a fighter plane world war two see at several layers and back back in the day this rubber in here was really gooey and so you could shoot it with a bullet and it would just ooze closed and seal it so they called it a celsium gasket and over here is the other half torpedo on the starboard side and here we have our different sizes of ammunition you see how big it is compared to my hand so it's the big one is a 40 millimeter then the medium sized one is a 37 millimeter cannon and then the brown one there on the third one is the 20 millimeter and then the smallest one there is the 50 caliber machine gun over here you see the uh insides to one of the torpedoes it's a cutaway and uh you can see the air tank and then the alcohol tank 20 pints of alcohol and then these turbines that spin around and they make the propellers turn to see back there on the back see them turning so uh it's all designed in 1923. so it's pretty cool it's got a gyroscope right here and a depth engine right there which is basically a big pendulum weight see how it swings and then there's a diaphragm that reacts to water pressure and then the exhaust from the steam turbine leaves a trail of steam bubbles that comes out of the hub of the propeller so you leave a trail of bubbles behind the torpedo and this one here is a mod 2 which could go 40 knots the mod 1 would go 33 and a half knots and something new we just got is on our 50 caliber mark 17 gun gun turrets we got these uh trigger assemblies so the trigger assemblies are really neat so you can shoot both machine guns with this bar or you can reach up here and shoot a single machine gun at a time with these thumb bars these thumb triggers so we've got a the sights right there you can look down it with the uh let's see if that brightness you can see how you would cite it on the little post and then the spider site down there we have a lot of spiders then you come here and you see the guide rollers for the ammo i think we would hold 550 rounds for each barrel and when you load it again you squeeze these and then lift it up and then you can load more another belt if you have to do that and this whole thing turns based on your hips so it can spin around and over here we have our gun sight our reflecting gun sight that you could get the rockets range with and then this is the uh the signal searchlight and this is the torpedo director this is a facsimile that we had to make but basically you can turn it to find uh where the target is where you sight it through here and then that post and then you get the site and you put the speed of the target on here you move it out for a fast target then you look down here and you get the angle and you turn the boat that angle ahead to hopefully you'll hit it and over here on the helm you've got the uh whiskey compass the flux gate gyrocompass auxiliary indicator you have the throttles here and the shift lock levers here that would the engine order telegraph and then this is the manifold pressure and the tachometer you can control all the navigation lights from here and then you can also do the horns and the dip charge bell things like that then on the helm you can turn it and you can see the rudder angle indicator turning as i spin it and then over here you see all the uh places where you have stowage right underneath the one of the gun tubs in the deck is that cover for the gas tank fill cap and then here's the other one down here you see it in the deck so that's 800 gallon tank each one of them and then down in here is the chart room you can see in the chart room we've got it all fixed up and so you come in the chart room and you can see starting over here there's a first aid kit for a motor torpedo boat and an arc iv radio which is neat and this is a very pistol and it shoots something like a it's a 10 gauge shotgun shells but they're actually signal flares then over there is the chronometer in the back and in the front is the sexton it's a u.s navy bureau view nav mark ii section manufactured by david white and the chronometer is a hamilton model 22 chronometer watch and uh is donated by uh alex hoffberg of watchwords portland this here is the so3 radar and you've got the iff control on the top and the radar with the ppi screen that circular thing this thing would rotate at 11 rpm and you can reverse the reverse it with this switch here and then there's all the controls for the brightness and tuning and gain and all that over here is uh another 37 millimeter break open flare gun which is made by international flare signal projector donated by jack duncan and that's i think a camillus mark ii fighting knife that was donated by franklin sage as was the very pistol back over there is a grimes five inch 24 volt dc signal light with interchangeable colored lenses so you can basically pull the trigger and it will blink there's the flux gate compass auxiliary indicator and that is the is was which is basically you see it it's a circular thing and you uh it's a target uh finding device so you could aim the torpedoes instead of using that wooden thing up there and then over here is the two uh tube style radios you have the collins tcs transmitter and receiver so here's the receiver and the transmitter is right there it's kind of hard to see through the plexiglas apologize and then that i don't know if you can see it is lou rosso who is talking on the radio on that on on his pt boat which was i want to say that for 61 i'm not really sure and over here is uh the chart house chart room and you've got the chart which was used by uh arthur frangelo on pt 302 during the invasion of elba island and that's called a parallel motion protractor which they used to navigate with and the parallel rulers and the dividers all these navigators would know these things and then also is if you can see on the map that circle it's a printed circle and that's the compass it tells you the uh correction factor you have to do for the magnetic compass so you would have you know magnetic deviation i guess so you would take that from there and then you would program it in on there with that little knob on the bottom so it would read true north instead of magnetic north anyway and back on the back you can see a picture of arthur frangelo standing there on guard duty in gulf lawn france and then that's al martin on the 461 at the chart board which is we're standing in front of a chart board so that's kind of cool that he's doing his job on the chartboard and you can see the chart board that we have in front of us is based on that over here is a remote control unit for the arc4 radio it's a selector switch so you can talk plane to plane or plane to ground or both and what we would do is we would talk to these uh pilots if they were like getting shot down and then there's a speaker for the r4 and a remote control unit speaker and microphone for the tcs radio which is these guys now i can't go down below because we have have it marked it's blocked off through the plexiglas but you can see down there we've got uh some of those directors stools you know like a canvas folding stool which uh found out that they had and you can you can see one i don't know if you can see it in this picture so here's a photograph that was taken on the 461 and if you look right in front of the table is one of those tools so over here is another kind of cool thing see this uh pt 309 says berlin or bust and so we have painted by joe reese one of our volunteers who's in new jersey says 658 tokyo or bus so we figured you know since we would be in the pacific it wouldn't be good to say berlin anyway on the table down there the following table we put some period uh you know eating utensils including the handleless coffee mug and the coffee pot and the mess kit and uh then you can see down there these they have their uniforms and one of their lockers is open and we have a couple of quarter masters and machinist mates that's a machine to make motor machines mate of course and then over there is the two quarter masters including qm one clyde combs who is a veteran of d-day so we're not gonna have people going down below on this trip well it's not a trip on this tour so then you can come up out of here and you can go up to the bow so go up to the bow and you can see that we were just recently added to the national historic register on september the 5th 2012. so hooray for us and so that's good because it opens a lot of doors that would be closed to us if we weren't and then found out that we decided to put the flag upon the radio antenna because we saw examples of that being done during the war this is a new addition is the iff antenna it was donated through uh rich fekelney down in uh san francisco at the uh pampanito museum a guy used this as a decoration at the burning man uh festival and then he decided it should go back to something that actually would use it so he found out that it belonged to a pt boat so we don't he donated it to us and then on the radar mast you can see the other one which is a you got a fat one and a skinny one so the skinny one is for the uh bn unit and then the fat one is for the abk then you can over see the life life raft the 10 man life raft with the floating floor here you can see that picture of the floor hanging down underneath it it's like a wooden floor and then we got a tarp sorry about the sun got a tarp in here and a ration container and a couple of water casks and a couple of paddles and then this is called the sea painter which you would throw the raft over the side and then have the c painter to hold it for floating off and then it's the same old stuff up here you got the k-pop life jackets which are really good cushions and then in here is the spare barrel for the 20-millimeter cannon on the bow we have another one of these spare barrels back in the back too and over here is the mark 50 rocket launcher right here you see how it's pointed up and there's another one on the other side which is right there and then there's another 20 millimeter herlicon and a 37 millimeter oldsmobile cannon right up here so you can see how they look they were pretty well armed and then we have another new addition which is a 60 millimeter mortar us m2 mortar and it was uh a two pound 15 ounce shell range of 1985 yards elevation between 40 and 85 a good crew could get 18 rounds per minute according to what we found muzzle velocity 518 feet per second and it shoots several different types of shells the pt voters used a lot of those parachute flares so they could illuminate the bad guys before they uh opened fire and uh this is really cool never seen this before but the site has a bubble sight on it there's a level i'm sorry see there's a level here and a level there and you can adjust it to get it leveled and then from there you can aim you know accurately but these things have to be level and you can turn it if you look you turn this one and it goes back and forth and then the other one on the front goes up and down all you marines are going duh but you know us navy guys have never seen this kind of stuff so this is the up and down one see it moving down
