welcome to crosstalk solutions my name's chris and today this is going to be a bit of an odd video because we're going to be reacting to a leak of the unifi protect g4 doorbell pro that happened about a month ago so let me explain what's going on here in this video we're going to first react to this g4 doorbell pro is it real is it fake i've got a ton of thoughts on that the second part of this video we're going to talk about ubiquiti's interesting and odd marketing strategies that they're doing with these kinds of videos because don't get me wrong the video that you're about to see is from ubiquity even though they make it seem like it's not all right so let's get right into it this is the video now i will put a link to this video down below this is from a youtube creator called lone wolf diy and this guy claims to have gotten his hands on a new product from ubiquity called the g4 doorbell pro let's go ahead and watch the video first and i'm going to react to this product because i actually do think it's a really cool product and then we're going to talk about this video this channel and ubiquity marketing in general all right let's go ahead and get started what's happening everybody it's chris with lonewolf diy man do i got something so cool i wanted to show you guys i have no idea how i got a hold of this thing okay again just to reiterate this was given to him by ubiquity okay so i have a lot of evidence to back that up but i'm 99.9 percent sure that this is a ubiquity marketing video please ubiquity don't sue me i cannot wait man look how cool that is there it is the g4 door tell me that this is the new doorbell check it out everybody the g4 doorbell pro what a pretty package too i really like this like soft black packaging the cardboard's fairly thick it's got a nice foam insert on the inside it says scan here to get started wow everybody look at that now if you can appreciate this device without my smudgy fingerprints all over it that would be great let me clean this off chris i don't want to watch an unboxing and be able to see your greasy fingerprints on there if i have to look at your greasy fingerprints one more time i'm going to take a video of your video and then i'm going to zoom into your fingerprints and then i'm gonna tell the fbi that you killed somebody because i'm gonna plant your fingerprints on the murder suspect okay anyway that got really deep we're not gonna do that we're not gonna talk about that we're gonna talk about the g4 doorbell pro now right away uh it's heavy this thing is very very heavy it's like an electric shaver or something so the construction of it it's really thick plastic it's almost like metal it's pretty solid on the back here you've got your standard phillips head screws that you use when you wrap the doorbell wire around it but it also has a usbc plug in there all right so let's take a look at the back of this thing first of all so as this gentleman said his name is also chris by the way as this gentleman said it does have the two doorbell wires just like the original g4 doorbell but there is also a usb c connector for additional power and i assume that they might have some sort of poe to usbc adapter maybe i'm not sure because one of the things that people said to me when i put out my original g4 doorbell video is boy this product would be amazing if only it could be powered by poe which n not a lot of people have ethernet at their doorbell right there aren't a lot of in fact i don't really know anyone who would have an ethernet connection at their doorbell unless you've run one specifically for you know a higher end doorbell like an axis or i think some of the higher end you know ring doorbells or something can take power over ethernet but this is a nice form factor especially if you can do some sort of poe to usb type c adapter uh this would be actually really cool that's interesting i wonder how that works because it's not really a poe it's a usbc so it's just providing power to the doorbell not not any kind of data or anything so the screen right here i should also mention that this guy's delivery is very much like oh this is weird i don't know what this thing is but it's probably and then lists out very specific details about this doorbell that he wouldn't have you know if ubiquity hadn't given it to him it looks a little bit different than my other ubiquity doorbell uh it looks an awful lot actually like the screen on my udm pro and my switch so okay so did you catch what he said there if we go back to this image here he's talking about this screen right here and they may have repurposed their 1.3 inch touchscreen that they use on the udm pro and their generation 2 switches as part of the doorbell which would require some additional power that's probably why they need that usbc power in the back now let's look what else we have here so we have the main camera we have the doorbell button this right here is the microphone then we have a big display screen and then we'll talk about this right here in just one moment uh it looks an awful lot actually to power this thing up if it will give me that star display that i see on my other devices and if it were like a touch touch screen on there wow that would be really really advanced i don't know if it's touching a which i noticed that there's a little black bar down here and i tried to pry it out of there it doesn't really seem like it's supposed to come out but if i were to guess on my macbook i have uh something very similar to that that reads my fingerprint so instead of typing in my password it uses my fingerprint to log into all my stuff okay so that is really cool all right so again he's playing it off as if he doesn't know that it's a fingerprint reader but obviously it's a fingerprint reader if you can now have a fingerprint reader to gain access to your house that's actually a pretty cool feature and i'm really glad that they added that to this product let's keep going so if that is what that is and you are able to scan your fingerprint you probably have the door and get in or scan your fingerprint to use your little display screen here that is really handy now when i'm looking on the back it's got a big fat reset button on there i don't know why that is uh but i will say that most reset buttons on devices like this you have to get like a paper clip and then you gotta poke the little reset hole in there and it seems like this would be a lot more convenient to use so i see these little holes he says that that reset button would be a lot more convenient to use but okay the reason that a reset button is hidden inside where you have to get a paperclip to hit it is because it's not supposed to be convenient you're not supposed to be able to conveniently factory reset a device because there's the potential that you might accidentally do it by putting that thing up against the wall where maybe there's something sticking out that actually factory resets it right so he calls it convenience i call it not that smart to have a big easily accessible factory reset button let's keep going on the back of the doorbell as well and i don't really see any kind of obvious use for those so i'm curious to know if there's a mount inside this box that require those holes so let's dig more into here yeah so here's our mount and it is metal i really like the ubiquity stuff is made of metal everything is made out of shitty plastic anymore and i am tired of replacing stuff not because it's out of date or something like that but because your stupid material wasn't able to stand up to the elements so thank you ubiquity for making the effort to make quality devices oh this is an angle mount okay so this is that's really cool i do like that they have an angle mount for this thing and maybe you need to get an angle around they didn't have one for the original g4 doorbell i don't believe maybe they did i'm gonna double check that but i'm glad that they have an angle mounted threw this in and that will provide you with the angle you need see that can you see that that that will so instead of a straight shot like that this will put it at an angle so that you can see around the corner and these these to me are one of the most impressive things that ubiquity has done as far as i know because i've done a lot of door installs that was that's been my business for the last 15 years and i have replaced so many doorbells you would not believe the little buttons and they are made of absolute cheap plastic the stuff that turns yellow in the sun and they just deteriorate including the contact points what happens is that breaks and then the contact touches and then it ends up blowing out the doorbell so what's really cool about these is it's got these little square contacts that actually just slide over the existing wiring coming out of the house so that way it will provide you with a direct connection and it will also insulate the wire so it won't have any kind of deterioration and the wires also will not touch together because of this all you have to do is just push this little tab down and then you feed your wire into there and you let go and that's it good to go and if you need to take it off of there you don't have to goof around by undoing these screws that's such a pain in the ass man when you are messing with those wires that are coming out of the house those wires are so thin and i can guarantee the quality of that copper wiring is such garbage that when you try to wrap it around these screws it's going to break so these are really nice to have so i actually agree with that the doorbell wiring that i've had experience with is very brittle very easy to break off so i do like that they include stuff like that that you can put your doorbell wiring in a little bit easier and then have a little bit more of a robust connection to connect into the g4 doorbell but there's also a lot of people that don't have space for that little dongle uh i know i had to cram mine in i barely had space for mine and uh and so there's a lot of folks where they will not be able to use that dongle so i assume that you can just connect the doorbell wires directly to the back of the device anyways all right let's keep going there's a lot of forgiveness if you need to go back and make any kind of adjustments and also it doesn't matter which way you plug these in uh you can positive negative it doesn't matter it will always connect now we've got two different styles here and i don't know again that whole thing right there like like we're gonna talk about this in the second half of this video but like you want evidence that this is a ubiquity plant how would he know that this device allows you to plug in positive negative either way and it's still going to work unless he had been fed that information ahead of time it he did not open the documentation that came with this device so again how would he know that he knew he knows that because ubiquity told it these are the points that you need to cover when you're talking about this g4 doorbell pro seeing this in the original doorbell so i'm not really sure i know these ones these ones just screw right into your existing phillips head like that and then as i was saying these go over the house wires that you already have so that seems to be your pretty standard power is the same as it was on the other doorbell um but this usbc that is very interesting so i'm going to plug that in and see if it does anything but until then i noticed that the speaker bar uh not much of a change it's an open bar instead of the perforated like on my other doorbell and oh i didn't even notice this but i just figured it was the light like the other one but there's actually another camera lens on the bottom he's like oh oh look what i just noticed okay so aside from that comment this is actually a really really cool feature right so the existing g4 doorbell does have a light that points down so when you come up to it it turns on it's a motion sensor light this one has a light and a downward facing what i assume to be a wide angle lens so that if you have a package delivered you can have that sort of downward facing camera that will show you a wide angle of your porch so that you can see if there are any packages sitting there that is a really cool idea and in my opinion between this and the sort of fingerprint reader those are probably the two main reasons to upgrade to this g4 doorbell pro of course once it's uh an actual product it's not even in the early access store as of yet let's say somebody drags dogs into the house right and you're like who drag dog in the house and nobody's gonna say anything you can just go back to the tape and you can take a look at whose kicks it was and then you can kick them out of your house because it's like you're full of your shoes have all over it so get your [Laughter] this guy likes to laugh jokes probably for something like a package so if you got it up at your front door and somebody drops a package down there you'll be able to see said package i guess okay so now i'm gonna get it hooked up and i'm gonna see what it does oh wait i got to show you guys the the power adapter i have the power adapter plugged into my switch via the poe ah so there you go my usbc so look poe usb type-c plug it into this port and see what happens we have our ubiquiti logo [Music] okay says starting up that's green is really nice that is very clear download the app unifi protect all right so i'm going to jump on my protect app and i'm going to see if i'm able to adopt this i don't even know if this thing is working right now because i'm not supposed to have it but uh i'm going to give it a shot anyway you guys don't want you guys didn't tune in for me to check it out and not try to adopt it hopefully by doing so ubiquity doesn't find out because i'm sure their network is connected and they're going to be like hey chris lonewolf is uh he's he's uh he's activated the protocol uh get him get him go get him all right let me get my phone let's give it the old adoption try okay everybody i'm back let's see if i am able to you guys notice by the way that his wireless mic is in his beer doorbell via the protect app that's actually pretty funny so i've taken a look at both my network app and my protect app to see if i am able to adopt this g4 doorbell pro thing and uh it is not showing up but that's okay of course so it's not going to show up in whatever apps he happens to have because since it's not even an early access device there is no version of protect that would be able to recognize uh the g4 doorbell pro as of yet all right let's keep going we've only got about 30. man we got a chance to look at it and man is this thing beautiful and when it does become adoptable i cannot wait to check it out because this little camera down here whatever this little box thing is right here and this bigger screen i bet this thing's got all kinds of really nifty stuff that i really want to dive into so i want to make sure that you all come back and see me when i do that because i have a feeling and i'm sure by you looking at this that you might have a feeling i think it's going to be really really great so thanks everybody for tuning in thanks for watching and have yourself a nice day so you guys may be like hey chris how did you get a hold of that super fancy doorbell well let me tell you yeah so okay so we're going to talk about the marketing here in just a moment uh but let's talk about this device again okay so g4 doorbell i don't have any pricing information no performance we've not seen it in action we don't know about the bottom facing camera we don't know about the fingerprint reader or any of that sort of stuff we have no details on this camera other than what's in this video but based on what's in this video it's pretty it's a cool device like this is a a adorable that i would replace my existing g4 doorbell with this pro version uh if i have the opportunity again the hard part is going to get the usb type c uh poe to usb type c wired into wherever your doorbell happens to be i know that's going to be a real pain for me i'd probably have to hire someone to do it i don't have any way to actually run a cable over to that area of my house so main camera package camera downward facing light you still got the microphone you've got a bigger display screen and you have that what looks to be a fingerprint reader awesome awesome awesome i cannot wait to get my hands on one of these devices alright so now we've talked about the g4 doorbell pro let's talk about this interesting marketing by ubiquity right after this word from our sponsor this video is brought to you by private internet access vpn pia has always been my own personal vpn of choice since way before i was a partner their service has always been easy to use and reliable and i can be confident that my data is safe and secure given that pia never keeps any user logs ever when you surf the web through one of pia's servers your wan ip address is masked making it more difficult to track your online activities such as banking logging into email instant messaging and more you can also mask your location in order to stream your favorite content and access websites and apps from anywhere in the world private internet access has so many great features they use open source vpn protocols such as openvpn and wireguard they have an internet kill switch powerful encryption split tunneling and they even have an ad blocker that protects you from ads trackers and malware private internet access is an excellent service that i highly recommend check them out by clicking on the link in the description below and you can get started for as little as two dollars and eight cents per month all right now back to the video all right thank you so much for that now what the heck is going on with ubiquiti's marketing so how do i know first and foremost that this is a ubiquity marketing video well to be honest i don't know 100 i just have a lot of evidence that it might be so let's go over some of this evidence and before we get to the evidence what i believe happened here this is my theory as to what actually happened here ubiquity creates these sort of third-party youtube channels they're trying to gain some outside momentum they're trying to make stuff go viral they've had they've done this twice now i will show you both of the youtube channels that they've attempted this with for this one this guy's been around for more than six months he's got less than a thousand subscribers and look at every single video on his channel every single video unified unify unify unify unified unified unified unified all of this equipment all of this stuff all of these installs that he's doing this this is a ubiquity plant now what i believe has happened here is ubiquity marketing has put out these different channels trying to gain momentum trying to make stuff go viral and it's not working they don't have a lot of subscribers these videos are not getting a lot of views from the general public because youtube channels take a long time to grow organically a long time you really can't force it i mean i've been doing this for six years now right and it was a long time before ubiquity ever actually noticed me and said hey let's send this guy some equipment so that he can test it out and we can get some views that way this guy was out of the box with these views and so what i suspect was happening is not a lot of people were catching on to these videos ubiquity marketing was spending a lot of money in equipment in producing these videos and editing them and getting the look and feel and thumbnails and all of that sort of stuff and they probably said listen we have to have some sort of viral moment we need a video that is going to go viral what can we do and so what ubiquity did is they say all right listen we're going to give you a prototype of the g4 doorbell pro now this is a device again hasn't hit the early access store a lot of people find out about ubiquity equipment first by looking at like fcc filings for equipment or something that's beyond what i typically look at but i don't think it's even hit those filings yet so they probably had a prototype of this thing they said okay we're gonna give this guy a prototype of this device and we're gonna make fun of ubiquiti's sort of terms terms and conditions where they don't allow youtubers like myself to review early access equipment anything that's in the early access store i can't even touch right i can't talk about it i can't show it on camera nothing the only thing i've been able to do is react to videos public videos on youtube about stuff like this this video came out about a month ago and i waited all of this time because i wasn't 100 sure that it was a ubiquity planted youtube channel uh now i'm very convinced of it because look at this if we go into the video and then you scroll down into the comments here there is a comment from ubiquity and ubiquity said our legal team has reached out to the email associated with this account please reply immediately okay this was actually edited the first time ubiquity responded it said please contact us about this video and then they edited that comment and then changed it to our legal team has reached out to you about this video now if i had an early access or prototype piece of ubiquity hardware and i showed it on youtube youtube or ubiquiti excuse me would have me take that video down that is a violation of the early access terms and conditions this comment hit this thing three weeks ago and i've been keeping an eye on everybody oh there we go okay i've been keeping an eye on this um for for about three weeks now before commenting on it because i wanted to see if ubiquity would actually have this guy's video taken down if this was not a ubiquity plant they would have had this video taken down which means that they've actually gone so far the ubiquity sort of social media team has actually gone so far as pretending that this guy's gonna get into legal trouble about this video and how will i know for sure i'll know for sure when they ask me to take down this video but you know there's no reason for me to take down this video until they make this guy take down that video right because i'm not reacting i'm not the one showing the g4 doorbell pro i'm just reacting to a public youtube video that's been out for a month already and has 5 000 views so look what they said here so some people are speculating also that this is a ubiquity plant so you unify police activated just own it and give us a release date they're saying that to ubiquity quit acting like punks and post the info and have folks pre-order so people are talking back to ubiquity as if like dude we know that this is you putting out this video wow great pr move ubiquity give me another reason not to buy ubiquity i don't agree with that one i i still love ubiquity stuff someone's asking about early access please and then this guy says they really act like they didn't have nothing to do with this right so which is kind of how i feel they're they're sort of pretending that like oh this guy's gonna get in trouble and they're really playing with that theme if you look at the thumbnail for this video look he's like got his eyes covered up and it's like holy s you know ooh don't get me in trouble ubiquity i'm gonna get in super trouble because i'm doing this but it didn't really work right this video only has 5000 views i think it's probably the highest viewed video on his channel yeah most of these videos are like 600 300 500 maybe here's one that's about 3 000 views but this one is 5 000 views i guess it worked in terms of it's the most popular video on this guy's channel but that's about it it really didn't go anywhere i can almost guarantee that this video that i'm recording right now will get 5 000 views in the first 24 hours and his video has been out for a month other evidence that this is a ubiquity marketing planted youtube channel we click on about and it just says some vids may be sponsored okay so it doesn't say hey we are with ubiquity.com or ui.com or anything like that it just says some videos may be sponsored but look at the videos again every single video on this channel and there's like 25 or 26 different videos every single video has to do with ubiquity gear and it's this guy installing the latest and greatest ubiquity gear he's got all sorts of information about it and there's really no substance to any of these videos like when i do ubiquity videos i show hey this is how you set it up this is the interface these are the settings that i'm setting to get this device working there is none of that with these videos it's all just hey here's a product here's the specs of the product and it's wrapped in this sort of package of kind of like a cool guy you know a cool youtube guy who's out there doing this on his own you know he's the lone wolf diy which listen chris from lone wolf diy if you're watching this video hit me up info crosstalk solutions dot com i'd love to talk to you about this i'm in arizona on a fairly regular basis let's go have a beer and talk about ubiquity stuff i really want to get your your side of the story uh for this youtube channel that you've got going so other evidence all right obviously the about page doesn't really tell us much of anything but like this is a guy who has all of these videos his thumbnails his editing his bumper intros are more polished than mine at 250 000 subscribers now granted that's not the best example because i am long overdue for an upgrade to my bumpers and my you know little intro videos and stuff like that right i'm long overdue for that but most youtube channels don't come out of the gate fully polished like this right this guy's fully polished he's got t-shirts for lone wolf he's got that whole like lone wolf background going on you know he's basically you can tell that there was a lot of thought money and effort put into all of these videos before the first video ever even hit youtube but believe it or not if you guys are not aware of this this is not the first time that ubiquity has done this actually i take that back this was the first time because the first video that this guy put out was see look at these bumpers and he's got this music he's got this whole intro and all this sort of stuff like i don't have any of this all right i don't have any of this and i've been on youtube for seven years uh okay so but look at this the first video was uploaded march 19th 2021 okay so about six months ago they started this same thing with his twitter right so his twitter you could say joined march 2021. now the twitter it seems like they forgot because his last post was april about a month after he first joined twitter was his last twitter post so he's basically gone from twitter uh they did not push on this at all he only did four tweets he has one follower in fact here i will follow him now he has two followers okay so uh but let me tell you about another ubiquity channel called networking awesome this is networking awesome so networking awesome is a very similar channel the first video from networking awesome pause this was march 26 2021 okay seven days after the first lone wolf diy video this one came out now these videos this is definitely ubiquity right because it actually says here this video brought to you by ui.com okay so ubiquity hired these folks they were a pre-existing team uh i think her name on youtube is playstation girl in fact let me look up her channel yeah so here's the playstation girl channel wait is this it hey i haven't seen you in a while okay so here's playstation girl no no no it's just and there's the same guy right so these are the same this is a different channel this is reckless comedy they've got 1.06 million subscribers okay so what youtube did is they went out and they hired these this team this reckless comedy team which is this guy here and this girl here playstation girl look this is the same two people right there right so they just hired this existing comedy team that has a million subscribers on youtube and they had them go out and start doing youtube videos now the interesting thing about networking awesome so lone wolf diy it seems like it's just a guy like me right it seems like a guy who's turning on a camera and filming and just talking to the camera talking about products etc this networking awesome they had massive production value in these things so they only did 14 videos total the last video they put out was three months ago but if you watch these videos that they put out not only do they have a ton of big mom um because ubiquity said that they could handle production value but they're using a ton of equipment like look how much equipment she's got stacked up here right again this we know is a ubiquity youtube channel i'm not kidding they must have sunk multi-hundreds of thousands of dollars into this networking awesome channel because they were going on location doing full unified installs working with celebrities you know c-level celebrities but you know celebrities nonetheless where they're actually working with celebrities they're writing all of these videos they were all scripted they had like you know comedy jokes and stuff between these people they probably lost a lot of money attempting this marketing stuff look at their views nine less than a thousand 300 views 500 views less than less than 300 300 their highest viewed video was this one here it was on the floodlight the smart floodlight and had 33 000 views now i don't know if ubiquity is actually paying to promote these youtube videos or they're just trying to get views organically or what but yeah this from ubiquity's marketing team i'm sorry but this one was a big big flop they're actually having a little bit better success with lone wolf diy especially when you talk about the amount of money they're putting into it versus the amount of return that they're getting in terms of views on the content but look it if we click about on networking awesome some of our videos may contain sponsored content okay so this one they're saying straight up they're sponsored and then if you look at the first video it says brought to you by ui.com right so all of their videos were unified this guy here if you click on his about lone wolf diy same thing some vids may be sponsored right so they have to do that youtube makes you do that if it's a sponsored video again this is why i believe this is all ubiquity marketing and i don't understand like i guess they gotta try right they gotta try to do this kind of stuff but i don't understand like why don't they just get more reviewers like myself and tom lawrence and mack telecom networks just get get more you know equipment in the hands of people like that linus tech tips for crying out loud it's probably cost them a lot less money to have linus tech tips do ubiquity videos than it does to create this entire network networking awesome channel that was like a three or four camera shoot following them around various places and then they also probably have to have people actually do the installs these two you know comedians aren't doing the installs they have actually i'm sure a ubiquity team that was following them around and doing these installs they were not doing it themselves it doesn't seem like either of these folks are you know super technically oriented people uh listen i could be wrong but that's just the way they come off uh to me so overall just very very odd marketing by ubiquity are there other channels out there also like these you know it seems like they're still doing the lone wolf diy videos the most recent video came out five days ago but it seems like they've given up on networking awesome alright so there you have it there is a look at the g4 doorbell pro there's a look at these interesting marketing tactics from ubiquity what do you guys think first of all what do you think about the device i'd love to hear your thoughts on the g4 doorbell pro don't ask me any questions about it because i literally know nothing i don't know the price i don't know when it's going to be released i don't know when it's going to be in the ea store i know nothing about it other than what is shown in that video and then what do you think about ubiquiti's marketing attempts i mean i guess they they're trying right they're trying something i give them credit for that but it's definitely interesting and and the type of grassroots and organic videos that they're going for here are not something that you can force right you can kind of j just by virtue of the fact that these videos are not very well viewed even a video showing a g4 doorbell pro which no one's ever even heard of before that video came out if that doesn't get these the this channel growing then i mean i i don't know what possibly will maybe this video right maybe this guy will gain a whole bunch of subscribers based on this video that i'm putting out right now but i think overall people can tell when something is organic and when something is not organic and these just seem very forced again the the quality of the thumbnails the quality of the productions um you know all of the thought that has gone into these videos it doesn't seem like a guy who just decided to turn on his camera one day and start installing ubiquity gear or doing ubiquity videos okay let me know your thoughts about all of this stuff down below in the comments i'm curious to hear what you guys think i'm also curious to hear if i'm going to hear from ubiquity about this video i will keep you guys updated alright my name's chris with crosstalk solutions if you enjoyed this video make sure you give me a thumbs up if you'd like to see more videos like this please click subscribe also if you can help me fix my bumpers if you know a good after effects guy tell me i'd love to talk to them we'll get those those bumpers fixed up and maybe i can emulate lone wolf diy or networking awesome or one of these other channels all right we'll see you guys in the next video [Music]
