welcome to crosstalk solutions my name is chris and lately there has been so much starlink news i kind of wanted to wrap everything up into a video to talk about all the cool new stuff including the brand new square starlink dish and the differences between the new square dish and the older round dish the one that i have on top of that you now have the ability to transfer your starlink service to someone else and starlink is officially out of beta so we're going to talk about all of that but first if you guys are here for the first time make sure you give me a thumbs up and subscribe to crosstalk solutions for two to three brand new tech videos every single week also follow crosstalk solutions on twitter at crosstalk sol for all of the latest updates okay so let's just start with the biggest thing here starlink is now out of beta but they didn't really announce that in any sort of grand fashion or anything like that because even though they are technically now out of beta people still really can't get their hands on these dishes because of chip shortages and supply chain issues that basically everyone is affected by right now so starlink's no different they're affected by those problems and they are kind of slow to roll out these dishes to people maybe the new square dish won't be as affected by supply chain i really don't know and i guess time will tell and we're going to talk about that new square dish in just a moment but first i wanted to talk about a post that i came across on reddit so here is the post right here it is from a user called karen39 and they had contacted starlink about transferring ownership of their dish and so starlink came back to them with an official response here or at least a response to their support channel that says thank you for reaching out to starlink support blah blah blah as you stated we do not have a buy back program as of yet but that may be something that we offer in the future thanks for asking however we have recently started a transfer program where a starlink customer can transfer their equipment to another person there are a few requirements and we would need some information about the new customer when you are ready to transfer the account has to be in good standing and we need to know the customer's email address and the new customer's intended service address please note the new owner will need to know this account number in order to proceed so please be sure to share that information with them in addition starlink is not responsible for anything related to the selling of the dish i also wonder how that affects a warranty service but that's a side note we will be closing the ticket at this time but please reach back out when you're ready uh blah blah blah blah okay so really cool right this is now kind of opens up a starlink after market sales avenue right so if you don't have a starlink dish if you're on the waiting list you can't get one but you know someone who has one they're like you know i bought this thing i got it but you know i just don't need it anymore you can now transfer ownerships you can take ownership of that device i'm sure there's forms to fill out i'm sure they have to check your service address to make sure that they're allowing you to have service in whatever area and again i'm not sure how like warranty service would be handled does it just transfer with the existing remaining warranty that the dish has or when you transfer service do you get a new warranty or is the warranty completely void i don't have any of those details but it is pretty exciting that it kind of opens up a new way for people to get a starlink dish if they don't have one already and i will also throw out there that the crosstalk discord channel there's a link down in the description below we do have a buy sell trade section of our discord normally it's for you know wireless equipment and you know voice over ip equipment stuff like that but heck if you have a starlink dish that you're looking to transfer to someone else and you want to get out from under those monthly recurring payments use the crosstalk discord there's a lot of people i'm sure that would be interested in finding out about available you know aftermarket dishes okay so now on to the exciting stuff there's a new form factor in terms of starlink satellite dish you can see sort of the side by side comparison here so let's talk about both these dishes and go through each one of them to see what's different about this new square dish because there are definitely some pros and some cons to this new dish so you kind of want to know which one you actually want to buy if you're looking to invest in starlight so again form factor the new dish is a little bit smaller you can see here the diameter of the round dish is 23.2 inches whereas this new square dish is 19 inches tall by 12 inches wide or 50 by 30 centimeters now look at the weight also so the weight of the dish itself the old one is 16 pounds the new one is 9.2 pounds so it's like two-thirds the weight of the old dish in fact the entire package together i think is down here at the bottom yeah it's 30 pounds for the old kit and now 18.7 pounds for the new kit so less than two-thirds uh the weight of the original equipment the mass diameter is a tiny bit smaller for 1.4 inches versus 1.3 inches operating temperature is exactly the same and then the ip rating is exactly the same they are both ip54 rated now there's also some differences with the new router that comes with the starlink satellite dish so here we can see same wireless standards same dual band but the new router is three by three multi-user mimo versus the old one which is two by two now what this means essentially is you can think of mimo as sort of lanes on a highway right and every time you have a device like a phone that's you know connecting to wi-fi this phone might be 2x2 mimo so it's going to use up two of those lanes to send traffic back and forth if you are a three by three mimo router or wireless access point that means you have more lanes for more devices to be communicating simultaneously with the internet or with you know other devices the operating temperature of the new router is also much much better so look at the old operating temperature was basically from freezing 32 degrees fahrenheit zero degrees celsius up to 86 degrees fahrenheit or 30 degrees celsius so kind of a narrow range of operating temperature you basically want to make sure that you have that old router inside whereas the operating temperature of the new router is minus 22 degrees fahrenheit which is minus 30 degrees celsius up to 122 degrees or 50 degrees celsius so much wider range it does say that it is configured for indoor use but it's also now ip54 rated so water resistant so to me what this means is while the water resistance is much better the operating temperatures are wider than the old one they probably still want you to have this indoor but it's probably okay now to have it like in a barn or in an air you know in your attic or somewhere where the temperature isn't quite so regulated and there might be some level of you know moisture or humidity where that router lives so that's very very cool that they're making it more robust now this last bullet point here on the router is the one that i'm kind of most concerned about so the existing wi-fi router has one ethernet port and the new one says there's an ethernet adapter available in the shop so let's take a look at this really quick here is the new install guide for the square dish and if we zoom in a little bit here and scroll down look at this right here so here's the router so you got power that plugs in here and then you've got a cable that comes from the dish all the way over to the router but look at this connector that's not ethernet all right so it's no longer an ethernet cable that's a proprietary connector now to connect to the router whereas version one the round dish had an ethernet connector right it's just standard ethernet if you scroll down a little bit more and zoom in here it is right here so this is where you plug the star link in it almost looks like a micro usb port though i can't imagine that it's actually micro usb uh maybe it's some sort of proprietary connector that they have but overall what does this mean for starlink and for networking it means that you can now no longer take your starlink satellite dish and plug it directly into a third-party router without using their included router which is not great i mean we'll see how they implement it but that's not necessarily the best thing i like to just ditch their router right and use the included poe brick to just plug my own third-party you know pfsense or edge router into the starlink and just connect directly and then use my own wireless access points and stuff like that now if you look at their faq and we open up this one here does the wi-fi router have any ethernet lan ports to connect wired devices so of course the circular dish does the square dish does not it says the router does not come with a built-in ethernet port however there is an ethernet adapter available for purchase in the starlink shop we're going to take a look at all of the new accessories for the square dish in just one moment but it says if you need more than one you can buy an ethernet switch to create additional ports two down from that it says can i add a third-party router or mesh system so for the square dish it says to connect a third-party router or mesh system you will need to purchase the ethernet adapter from the starlink shop to allow for a wired connection to the network bypass functionality is coming soon meaning that they do not have like bridge mode for their router yet it says it's coming obviously no eta on that and then it also says we are actively working on development of a starlink mesh product so now going back to the comparison chart here let me move myself out of the way okay so what else do we have here so in addition to the fact that they don't include the ethernet port any longer they also have if you look at the power supply here this used to have a power brick almost like a big like poe injector where the dish would plug into one port your router or external third-party router would plug into the second port they don't have that poe brick anymore everything is integrated into the wi-fi router so i guess kind of cool that they don't have that extra separate external power brick that's the one that caused me all sorts of problems that i had to have replaced a couple times but it's now only integrated in the wi-fi router you have to buy their ethernet adapter in order to use a third-party router or switch or hardwire anything and they don't yet have a bypass mode or bridge mode although they do say that it's coming some more differences here so originally they had the 100 foot cable that was attached to the dish and then it was ethernet on the other end that you plugged into the power brick now it comes with a 75 foot detachable cable so that's great i really love that it's now detachable because it seems silly to me that they would have created this cable that you like if anything goes wrong with the cable you have to replace the entire starlink satellite dish it doesn't make any sense make that cable a separate detachable item which they've now done and they have an additional cable length in the shop we'll take a look at accessories in just a moment here and then finally we saw the weight earlier 30 pounds was the old kit everything in the box was 30 pounds total now everything in the box is 18.7 pounds total all right so let's take a look at the new accessories that you can get with the starlink satellite dish this new version here so more mounts right they've got a lot more mounts for it being that it's a lighter dish it's just more mountable it has more mounting options for you so they have the pipe adapter mount that they also had on the old one now they have a short wall mount look it's meant to go sort of on the eve of a roof right here and then they also have a long wall mount that's supposed to attach to the wall and then kind of go out around any roof eve that might be obstructing so you kind of have a couple of different sort of roof mounting options or side of the house around the roof mounting options they have this new ground pole mount that says designed for in-ground installation when roof or wall mounting is not possible requires digging all right so tools needed shovel mortar hoe mixing trough bucket gloves concrete mix and water so this is basically a 44.45 inch pole that can basically be cemented into the ground if you've got no other options then they have this pivot mount so this is meant for a slanted roof like you can see here and then it allows you to put the mount on the roof and then you know pivot it whichever way you want to get the best angle for your dish and then here's the cable options that they have so the old cable or the one that comes with it is 75 feet and this one can be replaced if you need to so it's detachable from the dish now i absolutely love that they also have an optional double the length 150 foot cable if you need to go a longer distance i know myself the 100 foot cable that i have is just perfectly long enough for where i have my dish the 75 foot cable would not work for me i would have to get this 150 foot cable and then here we have the ethernet adapter so again this is now separate ethernet if you want to plug any sort of switch or third-party router into starlink now you have to buy this extra accessory which i don't mind that they offer it as an extra accessory because not everyone's going to need it but i do i want there to be a bridge mode right i don't want to have to use their wireless router i want to use my own networking equipment just connected to the saddling starlink satellite dish as the internet only cable riding kit is the same masonry routing kit is the same okay so basically that's all of the new accessories okay so there you have it and you can find out all of this information in their faq i will have a link down below to that if you want to check it out if you guys enjoyed this video make sure you give me a thumbs up if you'd like
