are you tired of getting scratched and lacerated all the time are you weary of being bitten over and over again are you done with being devoured by hordes of the undead well I'm captain gold and this is the gold standard comprehensive combat guide for project zomboid and in this video I'll be showing you the Art of War so that you may be able to conquer your zomboid enemies with ease by the end of this guide you'll be a one-man Zed killing Army who doesn't afraid of anything no matter what build of zomboid you're playing this guide will serve you well so with that said let's go ahead and get to boot camp unlike most zomboid guides I will be teaching you how to think strategically it's one thing to know how to fight it's another thing entirely to know when to fight and how to precisely fight each individual battle if you haven't noticed by now zomboid is not like your typical zombie game you can't just run into and gun your way through this sandbox experience a little more thought is needed in order to be successful in zomboid so let's go ahead and cover some of the Strategic assessments you'll have to make before engaging in combat with the undead before initiating contact with the Walkers you're going to have to consider your own survivors strengths and weaknesses in combat is your Survivor better with guns or melee how long can your character fight is multi-hit on or off you'll have to consider the type of Undead be confronting along with the strength or literal size of their forces or hordes fast shamblers are definitely different than sprinters and large hordes are always going to be harder to deal with than smaller groups keep track of what resources you have available to you that can be utilized for combat operations do you have guns melee weapons a way to start a fire do you know the terrain do you have Escape routs planned along with alternative routes of Escape does the terrain permit the use of fire is it safe to to use guns in that area you can learn the map by visiting the open-sourced project zomboid map website you can also check out the Town tour guide I made on my channel if you're going to go to a new town consider doing some Recon first you're going to want to take into account what the weather will be like so try to get your hands on a radio with the emergency broadcast frequency on it try to avoid fighting in inclement weather it's an easy way to get lost suddenly surrounded or surprise attacked last of all you need to calculate whether or not the risk of combat and the expenditure of resources that accompany such an Endeavor is worth it or not if your return on investment is minimal and the risk and cost is high don't undertake such an operation you want to aim for lowrisk high reward engagements you're also going to want to be realistic at what you can accomplish and you don't want to rush anything the enemy can afford mistakes the enemy has a nearly endless supply of troops you on the other hand only need to make one mistake to end your run one scratch one laceration one bite one wrong turn one moment of tunnel vision one moment of overconfidence or complacency and just like that you're one of them it truly is as sunzu wrote know thy enemy and know thyself thousand battles thousand victories in order to be prepared for war one must be well acquainted with the tool tools of War itself and how to best utilize them short blades are best used for stealth kills and as a last resort short blunts are also used best as a last resort early on in your playthrough the saucepan and frying pan are excellent weapons but as soon as you can get something better long blunts Spears and axes are your primary melee weapons if you level up maintenance Spears can be incredibly deadly they have amazing one-hot potential have the best range of any melee weapon and they're incredibly easy to craft you can also use them to kill Zeds through chain link fences and metal bar fences you can even charge Zeds and one shot kill them with Spears but I personally wouldn't recommend this for beginners hell I wouldn't recommend it ever but it's important to know that option does exist if you find a pitchfork consider keeping it it's basically a spear with great durability the katana and machete are easily the best melee weapons in game but they're rare items which are difficult to find wait until you level up maintenance significantly before you use them as a matter of fact you should level up Long Blade with the machete before you even consider using the katana because the katana unlike the machete cannot be repaired that said you can combine a machete with a spear to get a seriously powerful weapon you can also attach any knife to a spear to make it deadlier two-handed axes are also powerful weapons with decent durability the fire axe is arguably the best to use for combat as it swings faster than the wood axe and pickaxe while still hitting incredibly hard each swing with the fire axe also consumes much less stamina than the wood axe the Crowbar and spiked baseball bat are the best for long blunts the bat hits hard and fast while the Crowbar has insane durability and as such is the most reliable weapon thus mentioned all of these long-ranged melee weapons allow you the ability to miss a swing and then to shove a zed off of you if you miss the margin for error is much more forgiving with these weapons than with short blunts or short blades no matter what justification you might rationalize in your head the objectively verifiable truth is that these weapons are better than the short-ranged ones the whole of human military history has been a race to develop weapons that can hit targets from a distance with little risk of a Counter Strike from throwing rocks to slings and javelins to bows and arrows and Firearms this has been the case for a very obvious reason and and so it is true in this game as well you need to fight smarter not harder setting that aside you'll want to use blunt Weaponry if you want clothing off of Zeds that is because bladed weapons will damage the very clothing you're trying to acquire you should get into the habit of using the aiming cursor as an aid to judge distance fight with the profile of your character facing the screen it's much easier to judge distance this way when it comes to guns you're going to need to consider the amount of ammunition you have per mag what is the fire rate what's the range what's your aiming level at how fast can you reload all of these are important questions to ask yourself shotguns are best for low-level survivors and they're also always the best for dispatching Zeds which are tightly grouped together if you want to lower the carry weight of your shotgun just saw it off sure you'll lose some range but who the [ __ ] uses a shotgun for Sharp Shooting also the js2000 is the best shotgun due to the number of shells it holds the sought off version of this gun also shoots an additional pellet so it technically does a little more damage and it does marginally better with knockback double barrel shotguns while seriously lacking in the ammo capacity Department do hit harder and they never Jam the 9mm pistol is perhaps the best handgun in the game due to its magazine capacity in range although an argument could be made for the M1911 due to its damage and knockback revolvers are nice in the sense that you don't need mags in order to load them they're also incredibly reliable because they never [ __ ] Jam the M16 is arguably the best rifle hands down however it is super rare and takes skill to use optimally it's fully automatic and can be switched to single fire mode but given its Rarity you'll probably end up sticking with the M14 if you're worried about noise stick with handguns take the js2000 as an example the noise radius made from this this shotgun reaches 100 tiles the 9mm on the other hand only produces sound that covers 50 tiles even the Desert Eagle or the de pistol only has a noise radius of 70 tiles when shooting your Firearms don't move it severely affects your accuracy if you have a gun Jam hold the r key for the weapon wheel simply clear the jam this way it's much faster than right clicking the weapon in your inventory you could also just press the X key aim the cursor just behind the Zed you plan on capping this is the best way to ensure that your shot lands never attach your rifles or shot guns to your back manually equip them into your hands from your inventory keep your melee weapons on your back this way you can quickly switch to them if reloading is not a safe option sure you might end up slightly encumbered but that doesn't really matter the point is to swing and gain some distance so that you can use your gun again when ammo runs out throw the gun into your bag and that trust a melee weapon but on your back will still be there when you need it when possible give these boom sticks attachments that way you can improve their killing proficiency also remember to check the condition of your weapons prior to use regardless of whether or not they're melee or Firearms the last thing you want to happen in the middle of combat is for a weapon to break practice your Molotov throwing skills as well it can be tricky if you've never done it before in order to use a Molotov simply equip the molotov to your primary slot by right clicking and equipping it then equip a lighter to the secondary slot aim and throw that [ __ ] keep in mind that flaming zeks can burn down the buildings you want to loot it's best to use fire on Zeds in the open far from valuable structures if you've never used a particular melee weapon before test swing it in the safety of your base or safe house before you use it out live in the field get a feel for its speed and range if you want an easier experience turn on weapon outlines from melee weapons also if you don't want to be bored Bo taking forever to clear hordes just turn on multihit it also makes life slightly easier never try to level up shooting near your base or near any of your safe houses ammunition is precious so use it sparingly if you don't have a shotgun but you want to level up aiming simply push a z on the ground and execute them you'll literally never miss and this will ensure you gain aiming XP for every bullet fired practice reloading if you have nothing to do during inclement weather or during long nights a high reload level will will save your life if you're playing as an engineer mess around with the unique craftable items an engineer can utilize if you can throw a Molotov you'll be able to use the engineer's throwable weapons just fine so now you know how to think before fighting and now you're familiar with the tools of War here's how to actually approach fighting the undead when you confront them I've developed a concept known as the engagement pyramid simply follow the pyramid from bottom to top and you'll come to master the art of combat in project zomboid if possible avoid fighting the undead it preserves stamina ammunition and weapon condition it is the lowest risk option and could also potentially reward you greatly if that's not possible lead them [ __ ] somewhere else meaning that you should kite them to another location this is also low risk and potentially High reward only fight as a last resort and learn when to retreat when needed in single player or Co-op loot isn't going to go anywhere you can always get it later prioritize your safety first oh and just in case you need an example simply Retreat when these two moodles appear on your screen just being moderately exerted reduces melee damage by 50% decreases melee speed by 7% and it also makes you more likely to trip while also slowing down your movement speed and simply being drowsy is enough to decrease melee damage by another 50% while reducing your cone of vision and your rate of stamina recovery now add a common Moodle like panic and you'll come to see why being drowsy and moderately exerted is enough to Warrant a retreat of some sort all things being considered if you just follow this progression chart you'll come to rule all of Knox County you will literally have the wealth of the Chiefs and kings of a thousand Kingdoms at the palms of your hands it isn't that [Music] complicated you now know how to prepare for combat how to use your weapons and how to properly approach fighting now it's time to learn some tactics stand on down Zeds so they can't get up this makes combat easier stop the heads of down Zeds to preserve weapon durability just remember that this reduces the condition of your shoes or boots stay mobile and do not move forward when Zeds are lunging use fences or Windows to trip the undead you can instakill these [ __ ] when they're down keep track of your surroundings in order to prevent a sneak attack use cars trees fences and other obstacles to break groups apart peel Zeds off from groups to whittle down their numbers you can do this by whispering to whisper enter sneak mode and press the yell key speaking of the yell key switch that [ __ ] from Q to whatever else you prefer when going around corners you're going to want to take a wide angle to approach pay attention to sound cues knock on doors before entering Zeds on the other side will answer the call when opening a immediately take a swing if you're depressed switching weapons will be slower try to avoid fighting while sad Panic severely reduces melee damage and speed while also reducing firearm accuracy keep some beta blockers on you to reduce or eliminate Panic being sleepy also severely Nerfs you so keep some tea bags with you or some coffee and vitamins don't be an idiot and pop these when you want to loot consume these items when you're neck deep and [ __ ] creek with your mouth wide open pace yourself as physical exhaustion also Nerfs you being encumbered will slow you down and further exhaust you so you're going to want to try to avoid it during melee combat save jogging and sprinting for bad situations when you're dealing with shamblers you can always just outwalk them wear thick clothing or bulletproof armor for protection just keep in mind that heavy clothes can slow you down make you sweat and exhaust you let other patches can be sewn onto your clothing for further protection you can use campfires when molotovs are not available simply lure the undead over them and watch them burn keep in mind you have to be in the area for the fire to kill all the Zeds line up the undead and cut them down when using melee weapons get them in a tightly packed group when using a Shotgun If you're going to use cars to kill Walkers avoid damaging the hood car horns and Sirens are also great ways to lure Zeds away from an area keep in mind that sneaking exerts more energy and slows down your movement when fighting exit your sneaking stance anyways that concludes this gold standard guide
