yeah hey guys so I wanted to take him in here and kind of summarize where we're at on project 270 and what's coming next kind of where we've been and where we're going and then I also wanted to talk about one other element here but project 270 has just been awesome it's been very fun on my end and judging by the comments and the interest it seems to be fun on your end - and that's great so it's really bad eye-opening for me you wanna I replied to a couple comments about how stupid I feel for this hasn't been doing this 37 years and that I'm just now discovering the awesomeness of the 270 Winchester so but I'm glad never better late than never right so what I'm gonna do next is build up some of these hundred and sixty grain partitions we'll see I'm curious to see I think we can definitely get over three thousand there and in fact I think we could get that thirty fifty mark with the 160s so let me clarify something - a lot of people have asked well you're gonna start crunching powder with the 160s well what what nozzle are did with 160 grain partition is it's not any longer than the 150 they get the extra ten grains by changing the shape of the bullet and they call it a semi spitzer so you lose some BCE because they do make it they move that ogive it's a little bit beefier up front but they're able to keep the bullet link the same doing that so I wasn't crunching powder with the 150s so I don't think I will be with the 160s either same length bullet and I'm just gonna stick with the same powder charge that I used on the 150s and I'm sure I'll be right around 3,000 about a little bit over and I'm a grain and a half under the max of the data that I have so we've got some room to go here but I'm just gonna keep playing with that I'm gonna play a couple more of those 140 grain loads too and see if I can find some data on that for the reload or 26 I'd like to see what we can with the 140s push them push them really fast so that's where we're gonna go the next couple weeks for me are pretty busy so I don't know how much I'll be able to get done and get out but I'm going to keep on it as much as I can for you guys the other thing is I wanted to talk a little bit about what's generated a lot of comments off of the video about the first shots from project 270 and that is where I I threw out the comment about you know if you already have a 270 and you're thinking about a 7 Mac you know don't do it the 270 performance is similar that's generated a lot of comments and I expected that and that's cool so let me start by saying I'm very familiar with seven mag if you've watched my channel you know I have seven mags I load for my shoot um a lot and so I'm I'm basing what I'm gonna talk about here on that experience but I also did a poll on the channel today to just reach out to everybody and say hey what true velocities can you get with hundred and sixty grain bullets in a 7 mattock and of course I expected a wide range but two out of every five respondents said they can get thirty fifty honestly get thirty fifty and then another probably one-fifth in and so they could get thirty one hundred and then I had a few guys saying yo and I can break 3150 well I'm sure you can I'm not doubting that that's great I was specific about it being a 24 inch barrel because we go to 26 saying that starts not being a very fair comparison with the 270 but you look at Hornady superformance with 160s and they're claiming like thirty thirty three thousand and thirty feet per second and so you know I feel like an honest number to use for the majority of people would be thirty fifty maybe thirty one hundred is really pushing it I've reloaded one 60s for the seven mag for years all kinds of different powders now I haven't used reloaded 26 I says the first time I've ever had but all kinds of other powders reloader 25 I am our 78 28 and braking 3000 takes some work out of a 24 inch barrel I start getting pressure signs with a lot of those powders as I'm braking 3000 I do have a load with 162 grain India eld X that's just over 3000 and that's what three voter 25 near max I think I'm a few a few tents under Max and I'm seeing some pressure signs there if the temperatures above like 40 degrees so anyway I don't doubt people can do it different chambers different all kinds of things but I think it's honest to say that 30 50 maybe 30 100 is the max you're gonna get with one 60s out of the seven back so I put together this comparison and let me walk you through what's just really amazing here and especially when we caveat these barrel lengths so take a look at this all right so I put together a instead of showing it on the screen I printed it out so I can kind of walk through it so this is a comparison of the seven mag with 160 grain partitioned 24 inch barrel okay versus the 270 win with 160 grand partition 22 inch barrels so that's huge okay let's let's be dead honest about this two inch difference we're really given the seven mag the benefit here that's okay and I picked the partitions because it's a great hunting bullet and we could we could talk all day okay what we could do is we can take you know and do 150 versus 150 or 140 versus 140 and different bullet types or whatever but I'm talking the heavy hitting stuff out of both of these cartridges okay so the B C's for the seven mag you're looking at point four point four seventy-five on that bullet and you're looking at 434 out of the 270 and that shows you this reduction in VC that I talked about due to the bullet shape on that it's a semi Spitz or not a spitzer so even though it's the same weight unless diameter which could make the BC go up it doesn't because they've changed that bullet shape and they did that to accommodate the 270 Winchester I think anyway well last night I digress so look here well I did one run here starting the seven mag at thirty fifty and the two 73,000 and I put the three asterisks on the 270 because I haven't proven I can get it yet I got thirty seventy eight with hundred and fifty Greeners so I'm confident I can get three thousand and the three asterisks also are reminding you that the 270 is a 22 inch barrel and the seven mags a 24 okay so as we work our way down through velocities you can see that you know the seven mag retains an advantage the whole way through it's starting out fifty feet per second more and the better BC keeps it pulling away and by the time we get to 400 yards what are we there we're pushing 100 a little more than 100 feet per second okay so yep advantage to the seven mag but pretty minimal difference we'll talk about that a minute let's move over to energy seven mag starts out 30305 and the 270 starts out just right there at 3200 so about a hundred feet person on a foot panels different and as you would expect that seven mag is retaining more velocity therefore it's retaining more energy same bullet weight and then you get to 400 both of them have health energy and you've got an advantage there of about 170 or so foot pounds on the seven Mack okay now we'll talk trajectory same thing seven mag is gonna have a slight advantage here and you can see that by the time we get to 400 yards it's got a one inch advantage over the 270 so I did some percent differences here just to put it in perspective and you can see that you know as you are as we talked about velocity okay at at 400 yards the seven mag has a five percent advantage at five hundred yards it's just under six percent on energy you can see it's a little bit different there at four hundred there's a ten percent advantage to the seven mag twelve percent of five hundred so look I don't want to diminish those differences there are differences I guess that this probably comes back to video I did several days ago about the three classes of cartridges and really when both of these are starting out with energies that close you're just not going to see a high percentage difference in the way they perform within reasonable hunting ranges and form to me that's four hundred yards for the vast majority of hunters actually less than that but so that's why I always talk about that four hundred yard window so we're not talking huge differences you're talking you know a lot less powder to accomplish the this performance with the two seventy versus the seven mag so efficiency there's quite a bit difference the seven mag would be dominant there in terms of efficiency for sure trajectory difference I just did them at 400 and 500 so the seven mag enjoys a six and a half percent advantage at four hundred and seven and a quarter at five hundred so again I don't want to say those aren't those aren't worth it they might be worth it to you but on paper here mmm not seeing a big advantage alright so I hear everybody's saying a thirty 50s low we can do better we can do better okay okay so I did the same thing for seven mag with 3100 and I kept the to 73,000 okay so I won't bore you with walking through these if you want to study these numbers you can pause the video and you can see that obviously the seven mag is going to have more advantage than it did up here we gave it 50 feet per second more at the muzzle but we'll go over to these percentages now and we'll look at those and say okay you can see those again I don't want to oh these are good these are a mistake guys sorry the trajectory once I copied and I didn't change the formula so forget those black black black them out you can see here on velocity and energy what those advantages are and you know again I'm not going to say they're not a good advantage there's an advantage for sure but if you hunt in that four hundred yards in in range the 270 is not giving anything up to the seven mag okay its trajectory is within less than two inches difference energy is still well above my elk minimum of fifteen hundred foot-pounds at Florida guards velocities you know really not that big of a deal so and that's that's remember now 24 inch barrel on the seven mag 22 on the 270 oh what if we ran the 270 at 24 inches what if we ran the 270 to 24 inches well that's what we're gonna play now because I'm gonna pick up a 270 24 inch barrel and we're gonna put that into the project guys we got a no because based on what I see here and I realize the extra two inches will not give the 270 what it gives to a case with more capacity I get hold the hold burning the the length of the barrel I get all that so I know that we're not going to see the same advantage out of those two inches as we would out of a bigger cartridge but we're gonna see an advantage with this slow burning powder especially so I'm going to pick up a 24 inch barrel 270 because we can't let it go we've got to know because it's just amazing thanks guys
