the last time i was at cabela's i picked up a tube of birchwood casey's perma blue paste the directions were the same as their liquid perma blue and super blue i thought this nail set punch would be a good test piece since i have similar punches blued with the other products for comparison i think it's interesting how a lot of these are marked two thirty seconds rather than one sixteenth the tip had some pitting and had been re-ground this really isn't a video about how i cleaned up this punch i'll quickly go through what i did i like to peen the mushrooming back over before reshaping the head i used my 1 by 30 belt sander starting off with a 120 grit belt [Music] here's the nail set after cleaning up the knurling with the wire wheel and sanding down to 400 grit [Music] a nail set usually has a divot in the tip to keep it centered on the head of the nail i used a diamond coated ball shaped bit to regrind the divot back into the tip the factory tip is on the right and the one i did is on the left not bad magdad since not too fast for you to see sent me this nail set i figured i'd use his favorite scrubby wheels to polish it before bluing [Music] i've found that the most important step in using any cold bluing product is getting the item clean i used denatured alcohol once you think you have a clean go ahead and clean it again i used cut up pieces of old cotton t-shirt to apply the paste i usually use a cotton ball to apply the liquid bluing but i figured i needed something more sturdy to work the paste into the knurling i let the bluing soak for about a minute before rinsing in tap water after rinsing i used super fine steel wool to buff the finish [Music] i used a soft brass bristled brush on the knurling i cleaned the nail set with denatured alcohol after buffing then i gave it a second coat using a fresh cotton patch it's probably obvious but this is definitely a job you should do with rubber gloves on again i waited about a minute before rinsing in water here it is after the second coat i buffed and brushed it again [Music] this is coat number three after cleaning with denatured alcohol and here it is after the third coat i was pretty happy with the color at this point after buffing for the last time i soaked the punch in oil i used non-detergent 30 weight but any oil would probably work i like to let it soak in the oil for at least 24 hours okay this is what the nail set looked like when i started and here it is now the manufacturer claims that the paste builds up a denser longer lasting finish than the liquid bluing here's three punches for comparison this one was blued using super blue [Music] i use the liquid perma-blue on this one [Music] i think i only applied two coats of the liquid bluing solutions compared to the three coats of the paste the final color seems pretty similar for all three the paste was a little more difficult to work into the knurling as far as ease of application i think i like the liquid bluing solutions better overall i was pleased with the results i got with the paste i hope you enjoyed the video thanks for watching check out my other bluing videos [Music]
