the thing I love too about you know making movies is seeing Transformations and all of that when you all um first took that first look at yourselves in the mirror when you've transformed into Priscilla and into Elvis what is that moment like I trying to remember what that moment was like I our first day our first filming day was Us by the pool for me that was really fun to see them for the first time as Elvis and Priscilla together on set was amazing when are the kids listening to these day Bobby Darren Fabian and you when you show up on the first day you're just sort of flying by the seat of your pants and you're just crossing your fingers and hope it works and you're like does it look right do I sound right we're scrambling yeah we're just scrambling so I don't think you ever have a moment you don't have it's not like a perfect world where you go I did it here we go we're entering into the world now I figured it all out it's sort of as you go you're just trying to put it together did you have a little I think I think I think my feeling my feeling was actually the opposite I I call I facetimed my mom immediately and and my agent and I I think it was this I was like see me love me here I am as Elvis it was totally ego what did your mama say when you did I think she just started yelling she just started like you know my hands cute I can't imagine how you don't have that kind of strike a pose that moment for you when Jacob walked in in The Comeback Special the leather suit we were all like oh yeah he's not like you well first things first when you're doing this film and then you have Priscilla Presley say yes and I give you you know the blessing when you see the film what is that like and what does that do for all of you yeah for me it was such a big responsibility um to tell her story in a way that she would feel good about it I was always thinking I've always just thought about what I want to make but now I was also thinking about something that that was uh represented her in a way that felt accurate to her so I uh that was a challenge for me in making it and I was really so relieved and it meant so much to me when she saw the film and said um this that's what my life was like hi what's your name Priscilla Boer you like Elvis Presley of course you played her so I can imagine like if you're holding your your breath when you know she's watching and you're playing her what was that like absolutely surreal um yeah I I I don't know it's interesting choice to wait till till Venice to watch it for the first time and then her sitting right next to me actually Jacob was in between us and I would turn to Jacob and go what what is she do what does she see what do she like it but it yes again it was such a relief after after the film played that she she seemed visibly moved and saw her life through the film was everything so you were I spy for her you were like you were she's leaning this way she leaning to the could you tell what like what her Prisa impr press I forgot you were sitting right next to I was a bit nervous to look over it cuz it it felt kind of invasive or something it was moment so yeah and there were things that I mean you had to play in the film that I'm sure were very emotional for her that weren't the easiest things to watch as well so I can imagine how you felt yeah I mean it's it's a surreal experience Sophia is it true that that your budget was so low at one point you said you wanted to auction off a pickle ball game with Jacob yeah I don't know how that story got out that's true we were so desperate we're like we need one more day of shooting and we're like and we were all playing pickle ball and like and like we we'll have a a game with Jacob we'll auction off like we could get one day of shooting for but I didn't but we didn't really expl are you the master pickle baller no no s we had aall court on set it did make me wonder how does someone though with your filmography and everything that you've done not have the budget she needs to Ser I know it's always I forget that now I'm established and I've done a lot of movies I still feel like when I'm starting like you're I'm always like trying to patch it together and um and yeah I um it's yeah that's just the kind of the reality of the film business today but um I'm grateful that I got to make this movie and that it turned out the way I imagined why my daughter well sure I happened to be very funny and daughter we didn't get to really see Elvis perform in this film but we did get to see that moment when you um sat down and you were playing the piano was that you that was me in the shot yeah I did learn yeah that's me doing all of that yeah that was you playing yeah I was lucky know I got Tau like a basic blues progression and then the Jerry Lee Lewis thing on the keys that he does is kind of so you have a little get down there's a little little something in there but again that's that's costume and environment and these guys hyping me up you guys would hype me up whenever there was a musical scene like it was very much I can't do it and they like you can do it you can do it was that your real singing voice too no no that's like layers of of of impersonator voices and things like that I was impressed I was like I wonder how did they feel was that him but I'm impressed by that my Knuckles actually beding they bled in that on that yeah that sequence oh cuz it was when you got to sit down and talk to Priscilla um Kaye what were what kind of conversations did you have with her that stuck with you maybe the most I guess I I just didn't want her to feel like was interviewing her you know and this is such a sensitive time in her life so when I sat down with her the first time I really just tried to see where the conversations went naturally and we did talk a lot about their time together and that was really precious and talked about these little moments or inside jokes they shared and she would you know giggle in a way that it was like she went back to those moments herself that were so uh special to watch but just being in front of her and talking about all sorts of things and how she holds herself and um just such kindness but also such a fierce strong woman who's lived you know this incredible life and you know I think one of the things about your performance that stuck with me and I mean I'm sure you guys saw it but like you played so much with your face and just your eyes like you know there were I'm sitting here thinking like I don't even know if she said anything in that whole scene but you said a lot you know what I'm saying like you said a lot and that like that was wild to me that was really wild to me that's good yeah I'm so impressed with how much you can convey in your face without yeah without saying anything I think Sophia was so great at also having these almost picturesque silent moments that say so much to you know the moment of her walking around Gracin as a young girl that's silenc her trying out all the different chairs or her putting on the false eyelashes right before she goes to give birth sometimes the most powerful moments to me were the the moments without any dialog yeah I was like this movie movie could have been called When a Woman's Fed Up cuz when you saw the ter you know the arc when she would you would see emotion and then when it got to the point when it was just like that look of her I was like wo Lord run Elvis cuz she done with you she's done and how did you get the accent down I mean there's there's so much information and footage and music so it's just I had it on repeat in my ears for for a couple months could you not shake it afterwards no I was I was I was okay I was we I didn't shoot for it was 30 days black hair and more eye makeup I don't know if I like it what do you mean you don't know if you're likey you Ken dun was the one who suggested that Kaylee play prisilla I um my casting team suggested I meet Kaye because I was like who could play 14 to 29 and and they thought she was a talent that I should meet and so I met her and then you know it's a big decision to cast someone uh in the to have to carry a whole movie and I spoke with Kirsten who had just worked with her and she said how much she loved working with Kaye and that she thought I would like her and how talented she was so so that gave me the confidence when you heard that that she really like vouched for her yeah she vouched for you and went to bat with you how did that make you feel I mean it was just that also was so surreal you know full circle you know Kiron made such special movies with Sophia movies that I watch Growing Up So to have that full circle moment was just an incredible way to enter this movie yeah
