hello this is dr grande today's question is can i analyze the life death and personality of prince philip duke of edinburgh just a reminder i'm not diagnosing anybody in this video only speculating about what could be happening a situation like this if you enjoy this video please like it subscribe to my channel and consider supporting me on patreon i'll put the link to patreon in the description for this video so first i'll look at the background of prince philip and then i'll move to my analysis prince philip was born on june 10 1921 in the kingdom of greece at that time he was prince philip of greece and denmark his father was prince andrew of greece in denmark and his mother was prince alice of battenberg philip had four elder sisters his father prince andrew got into a bit of trouble mostly because when he was serving in the army as a major general he disobeyed orders he was court-martialed and banished from greece for life the family moved to france philip did well in school and even though he was described as a know-it-all people found him to be extremely polite philip's mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and put in a mental institution he had little contact with her for a number of years philip's father would die in 1944 and his mother would pass away in 1969. in 1939 phillip entered the britannia royal naval college at dartmouth during a tour of the college queen elizabeth asked philip to escort the king's daughters elizabeth and margaret elizabeth was only 13 at that time this was not the first time that philip and elizabeth met they first met in 1934 when philip was 12 and elizabeth was seven we see a number of stories around their first meeting so it's not really known for sure but either way they were both fairly young when they first met philip was the great great grandson of queen victoria elizabeth was the great great granddaughter of queen victoria so philip and elizabeth were distant cousins philip and elizabeth started a romantic relationship and would exchange letters elizabeth told her father that philip was the only man she could ever love in january of 1940 during world war ii philip was appointed as a midshipman in the royal navy but within a few years his rank was increased to lieutenant he served on battleships heavy cruisers destroyers and saw a good deal of action during one engagement he saved a destroyer from a bombing attack that occurred at night by distracting the bombers using smoke and a raft philip was on board the united states battleship missouri when the japanese formally surrendered on september 2 1945 after his service in the war philip asked king george the sixth for permission to marry elizabeth the king said okay but the engagement could not occur until elizabeth turned 21 philip and elizabeth would announce their engagement in july of 1947. not long before this philip had taken the surname mountbatten and had become a british subject philip and elizabeth would marry on november 20 1947. philip became the duke of edinburgh and was given a number of other titles as well the couple would eventually have four children charles in 1948 and in 1950 andrew in 1960 and edward in 1964. philip returned to serving in the navy until 1951. he was eventually promoted to commander but it was after his active service had ended on february 6 1952 philip and elizabeth were on official business in kenya when king george vi died elizabeth became queen elizabeth ii elizabeth did not take philip's last name due to her ascension to the throne philip was not happy that his children would not have his last name philip had some trouble adjusting to elizabeth being in the spotlight and his role as consort to the queen philip eventually adjusted though and he and elizabeth were very active in conducting their official royal duties traveling all over the world and attending various functions in 1957 elizabeth gave philip the title prince of the united kingdom which meant he was now referred to as his royal highness the prince philip duke of edinburgh philip and elizabeth continued to remain active for many years when philip was 80 he was asked about the prospect of living to 100 he said that bits of him were falling off already so it didn't seem like he was too keen on the idea when he turned 90 he was given the title lord high admiral as a birthday gift to a royal that already had something like a dozen titles this was probably the equivalent of getting another necktie like he would open up the card with this title and say with a forced smile oh a title thanks so much i was just saying the other day how i need another one of those because my name isn't long enough already philip would not retire from his royal duties until august of 2017 when he was 96 philip worked 31 years past typical retirement age during his tenure he had completed 22 219 solo engagements over the years philip did have a few health problems he had a hip replacement in 2018 but overall he was in fairly good health for a long time he was in a car accident in 2019 that apparently he caused he voluntarily surrendered his driver's license three weeks later the government decided not to pursue charges against him in 2021 philip was hospitalized a number of times his health started failing quite a bit on april 9 2021 prince philip duke of edinburgh would die he was 99 years old philip was the longest-serving british royal consort in history now moving to my analysis even though prince philip was often in the shadow of elizabeth his life was extremely productive and quite interesting like many royals he had a number of hobbies and interests specifically painting artwork polo carriage driving and later in life flying let's take a look at his potential personality profile when i conceptualize personality i often use the five factor model i remember the five factors through the acronym ocean openness to experience conscientiousness extroversion agreeableness and neuroticism philip's level of openness to experience was probably just a little higher than average he was creative intellectually curious and adventurous but he did not appear to be liberal and he did not seem to experience emotions intensely philip was high in conscientiousness he had a great work ethic and was generally cautious now some look at his tendency to make awkward and offensive statements as being impulsive but i think it was just because he had to make so many statements as part of his royal duties i'll talk about that in a moment philip was probably about average an extroversion he was friendly sensation-seeking and assertive but also analytical and not particularly outgoing he was probably around average and agreeableness he valued competition his level of trust was not exceedingly high he was described as cold distant and domineering he developed a reputation for speaking his mind many described him as blunt on the high side though he was modest altruistic and straightforward phillip's level of neuroticism was probably low he did not appear depressed anxious or vulnerable he resisted temptation pretty well and was not generally angry i'll go into more detail on some of the tendencies we see with philip here a few that really stood out philip was considered modest and practical for the most part for example he answered the phone himself something that other royals did not do at that time he mixed his own drinks he opened doors for himself he wrote his own speeches not everybody liked that part he often drove his own vehicle albeit too fast and he carried his own suitcase he had a curious relationship with prince charles but it's hard to know what's really true because there are so many rumors out there for example it's been said that philip thought of prince charles as a bit of a wimp and had contempt for him it's also been said that phil pushed prince charles into marrying diana i'm not sure about that relationship even people who have good relationships sometimes make statements that are unkind i think prince philip sometimes gets judged on his worst moments i talked about some of the interesting statements that prince philip has made over the years his sense of humor was pronounced but many interpreted his jokes as offensive awkward or politically incorrect in reality it wasn't just the interpretation many of them were pretty offensive i think a lot of it was because he had to make a lot of small talk his job was basically flying around and awkwardly talking to people when he would greet somebody he would look at them and try to figure out something to say there's not a lot to go on in that situation many of his rude comments were about things he could observe in that short amount of time when he was talking to somebody in that forced social situation there was pressure to be witty after all the person he was talking to would likely remember what he said for the rest of their lives some of the statements he made were probably by design like he was trying to be funny and maybe trying to be offensive on certain occasions i'll give a few examples of things that he said that understandably didn't go over so well in 1965 he was in ethiopia and being shown artwork he said it looks like the kind of thing my daughter would bring back from her school art lessons in 1995 he was in scotland and asked a driving instructor how do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test also in 1995 he suggested that mental health counseling was unnecessary for combatants saying that in his time counselors did not rush around every time somebody fired a gun asking if people were all right and were they sure they didn't have some type of ghastly problem in 1998 he was talking to a woman who lost two sons in a fire he said that smoke alarms were a nuisance he had one in his bathroom and every time he ran a bath the steam would set it off while visiting australia in 2002 he asked a group of indigenous australians do you still throw spears at each other in 2009 he was talking to a female sikh cadet who told her that she worked in a nightclub he said is it a strip club on another occasion he met a man who introduced his wife who had a phd by saying she's more important than i am philip replied we have the same problem in our family that one is kind of funny it's hard to imagine all those really accents but again i think many probably were it's worth noting that he had a few other statements they made that were much more offensive that i did not include and he also had many that were benign and clearly intended to be humorous philip was aware of his tendency to say offensive things he knew this attracted attention on several occasions he joked about how he just couldn't seem to avoid saying those things this aspect of philip his straight talking no filter delivery is a bit controversial some people look at him and think that he was a bad guy who harbored a lot of bias against different groups of people but others feel as though he was really fighting for free speech for a simpler time when people just spoke their mind instead of being worried about everything they said most of the victims of his insults gave him a pass because they believed he did not mean what he said in any destructive or harmful way rather he was just being honest and direct people always knew where they stood with prince philip in the netflix series the crown prince philip was portrayed in the early seasons like the young prince philip as being whiny and entitled unhappy with this station in life when they moved to the middle age prince philip he was portrayed more as an honest forthcoming and pragmatic problem solver someone who was not prone to complaining it's almost like they were suggesting he changed a bit as he grew older which of course makes sense and looking at the available information on prince philip my opinion is that in 1952 he was just not ready to give up his active service in the navy and he knew that would be drawing to a close with elizabeth ascending to the throne his career was being cut short i think he knew that would happen someday but he thought he had more time philip was an intelligent man who wanted to make a lot of contributions he had a lot of innovative ideas for the navy he wanted to be more than an assistant to the queen i think it's understandable he needed some time to adjust i think prince philip believed that he had a pretty good life he made it clear that he had a lot of advantages that compensated for whatever shortcomings there might be in the royal life like not being able to wander around in public casually his mission moved from being in the navy to trying to preserve the monarchy when considering everything about philip i realized that he was insensitive and rude at times but after weighing his faults against his positive attributes like his incredible industriousness i believe prince philip was an impressive man overall i think philip was one of the most relatable members of the british royal family a down to earth person who even though he was born into royalty understood the absurdity that other people see in the royal life he was a realist he could see things from multiple points of view he valued the monarchy but he was also aggravated by it he was someone who was not afraid to state his opinions those are my thoughts on prince philip duke of edinburgh please put any opinions and thoughts in the comments section they always generate an interesting dialogue as always i hope you found my analysis of this topic to be interesting thanks for watching
