so be mad at me all you want for misspelling words in Spanish be mad at me all you want for mispronouncing words in Spanish this happened because of a Disney show representation especially when it comes to TV shows and movies is an incredibly important thing to get right it's very easy to unleash something onto the public that doesn't exactly give an accurate or flattering impression of the people you claim to represent and you especially don't want to do this when it comes to Children's Entertainment specifically given how impressionable children can be and around 1 year ago yes it has been a year I'm scared to Disney learned this the hard way after the reactions to their upcoming show Primos caused every rational person on the planet to raise a few eyebrows now I've seen heated backlash towards shows with ignorant misinformed or terrible minority representation in the past but the backlash towards Disney's Primos might genuinely be the hardest I have watched an unreleased Disney product get body slammed by the entire internet and the sting of said backlash clearly has Disney quivering in their boots to this day as Not only was Prim much delayed from its original air dat set to release about a day ago as of recording this AIO it has mysteriously vanished with no word from Disney on what's going on with the show and leaving its fate uncertain meanwhile the first two episodes have already leaked on pirate sites Primos is to put it simply a PR Nightmare and I originally wanted to talk about this last year as it was happening but I was just a bit too busy at the time but now there's a lot more for me to chew on and I think it's interesting to look back at the events of last year I wanted to recap the insane amount of issues people have with the show the backlash itself the responses from people working on the show which only added to people's anger and I also wanted to cover the leaked episodes that seem to have flown under most people's Radars to see if I can actually get a decent read on what the show is going to be like and finally discussing if the show really has that much of a future left given Disney's public neglect and just how many people hate the show's guts chapter 1 the actual show we should probably discuss what the actual show is first and some of the more tame critiques people have levied towards it before all the other [ __ ] happened Remos is about a girl named Tater who has to deal with her 12 cousins moving in with her for the summer as she discovers just what it is that makes her special and generally if you look at the show's premise along with what we've actually seen of it so far it's basically just a standard Fair Disney cartoon for kids similar art sty to most 2010's cartoons and your opinions may vary on that but visually I think the show is rather decent especially the backgrounds and honestly from what little of it we've seen the show just seems fine again very standard Fair Disney cartoon and that's totally fine not everything has to be the next Phineas Ander or Gravity Falls and I respect that this is ultimately a project born from the Creator Natasha Klein's own personal experiences growing up and that she aimed for the show to represent Mexican Americans using those experiences all of this on the surface Paints the picture of a safe but harmless kids cartoon that ordinarily people would not be giving the time of day at all though people were rather quick to point out that the show's premise of a middle child trying to survive in a house with tons of relatives was a Touch Too similar to Nickelodeon's the loud house and more specifically it's spin-off show the C of Grandes which also happens to be a show about a middle child trying to survive in a house with a ton of her siblings while representing Mexican Americans but while pretty most is an incredibly similar show to the CAG Grandes just based on a conceptual level the show being based on kle own personal experiences growing up is enough to save this show from a lot of flack so yeah that's Primos no genuinely that's pretty much everything that's actually publicly available about the show itself except for the recent leaks which we'll discuss later this seems rather innocent doesn't it just a Disney cartoon for kids based on the Creator's personal experiences sure it's bordering on being a bit too familiar to other cartoons that are recently released but these seem like pretty weak critiques overall I mean chapter 2 everything gets worse approximately 0.5 seconds after the intro to the show is posted online Disney's social media manager probably set a record for how much a human being can sweat from Fear alone see we've only talked about the actual show itself not what people were actually mad about many Mexicans and Latin Americans were very quick to point out that many aspects about Primos just from the intro were a bit sus at best a lot of it was tone deaf or an understandable oversight but at worst it was fairly yikes I won't suo it well I think calling the show itself and the people working on it racist is a step too far the majority of people's complaints about it are pretty Justified now I no this come off as a shock to some of you given my thick Mexican accent but I am a white British guy and therefore do not want to speak any Mexican or Latin Americans who may agree or disagree about Prett much being offensive but I think naming a city in your Mexican American representing cartoon earthquake Heights is [ __ ] wild like imagine if you named a place in New Orleans Hurricane Katrina Avenue or better yet named a place in New York 911 Boulevard Latinos in Central and South America as well as Mexicans in central Mexico regularly suffer and lose large numbers of people to earthquake every year so maybe don't name the fictional city your show takes place in after that and that's not the only issue people have with the show's backgrounds if you look at the background for more than a second you'll be seeing a lot of shoes being hung up on power lines now the meaning of l can differ based on a lot of people's cultures but shoe tossing is often linked with gang activity and organized crime as well as drugs and even though there are far more innocent meanings to it and I get that kind of stuff is common in Los Angeles where the show is set I am still shocked this even made it through if you know anything about Disney's standards and practices you know that they are incredibly strict just look at how hard Alex herch had to fight just to tell basic jokes and Gravity Falls so how this managed to make it through is really anyone's guess then there's also the names of the characters many were quick to point out the characters nacho and nchito were named after foods and were also very stereotypical names for Latino characters in American Productions but they can be given a half decent explanation being shorter versions of the name ignasio look I do know a bit of Spanish but I'm not entirely perfect in my pronunciation and apparently they're pretty common ways to shorten the name itself still though I guess it is about how you look at it and in all fairness they could have absolutely come up with different names that aren't so overused and stereotypical however the biggest reason why everyone got mad had to be them naming the too character Gita now this when directly translated means small cockroach but even I with my rather limited comprehension of Spanish was aware of it being a well-known slang term for female genitalia and so you can imagine how well this Revelation went down basically immediately it was definitely the funniest part of the controversy by a long shot but also something that should absolutely be changed perhaps one of the most common critiques was that the despite the show claiming to represent mexican-americans and with that comes the expectation that there'll be a lot of kids first exposure to the culture pretty much just sucks at Spanish there's the obvious inclusion of kukita from earlier which I still have no idea how that made it through there's also the fact that the main catchy part of the Show's theme song Oya Primos is not actually grammatically correct it's broken Spanish as o is singular and it is incredibly funny how this one grammatical error could have been solved by simply removing the ass on Primos and given this was People's First exposure to the show it's a bit alarming and could be a sign that the show overall will have very ignorant or misinformed uses of Spanish which again is not something you want to do when making an American kids cartoon there is a tiny bit of nuance here that people tend to overlook though I will admit that the idea of them slapping a Google translate result into an official Disney product is hilarious and it's the fact that this show is based the Creator's experiences growing up in America and not Mexico which is also something I think people have twisted up for a broken game of telephone as the series has no intention of being an accurate representation of growing up in Mexico I mean it is quite literally blatantly set in La anyway back to my point this could likely mean that she doesn't have the firmest grasp on Spanish but even still people's complaints are pretty Justified here and it if it turns out the rest of the show misuses or mistranslates Spanish then this is just going to look worse overall I also wanted to mention that a lot of people were also offended because the show is about a large Mexican American Family living under a single roof because it's a pretty common stereotype this is one point that I think is reasonable but kind of unfair in retrospect well yes it is absolutely a common stereotype and I would have agreed with you if this was any other person making a cartoon like this Primos has clearly based on the Creator's childhood and how she grew up and the toughest pill to swallow about some stereotypes is it just because they are stereotypes and should rightfully not be placed on people who belong to a specific group doesn't mean that they're straight up lies and clearly Klein's Life as a kid is not a lie it just happens to conform to a common stereotype okay so that's a lot of problem since while some of them aren't nearly as bad as they seem on the surface it can't be denied that there's been a comical amount of oversights here from the poor Spanish to being toned deaf in regards to Spanish stereotypes to the background details and mere premise there's plenty about primy much to set people off but while the show was unpopular I do believe they could have bounced back a lot of this stuff is easily fixable and so long as nothing nuclear happened that would forever tarnish the show and the cruise reputation I think the show could have easily had a pretty successful future what the hell is that chapter 3 Disney's PR nightmare this is mirina Fasco the voice actress for the protagonist of Primos Tater she decided she'd weigh in on the conversation surrounding the show and fair enough she's a part of the production and we could get some interesting insights and explanations or maybe an apology or two how some things were handled I don't know be mad then oh dear this video is rather Infamous now as it's essentially a full minutes of Mira not only being completely condescending and passive aggressive towards those who were understandably offended by the show but also going on a completely unrelated and unhinged random response to criticism over her pronunciation of Spanish bringing up how Spanish is a colonizer language while speaking English which is the funniest [ __ ] thing of all time it's a language the Spanish conquistadors forced a upon Latin American people the only reason we're Latin people and not Native American people is because of that distinction yeah let's just ignore that it's been hundreds of years and the rich cultures formed by Mexico and Latin America in that time period just don't exist because you said so this is her excuse for deliberately not trying to put any effort into properly representing the group of people the character she is voicing is literally meant to represent in a show about representing that group of people the fact she unironically responded to the people she was actually trying to represent who were justifiably upset and basically told them LOL your language sucks actually so I don't care unironically throwing in the please think of the children excuse we're trying to make a good show for kids for kids that feel left out what the hell is this while the entire time she's smugly staring at the camera and acting like she's above the Justified complaints made this a masterpiece of Tom Foolery and believe it or not this one stupid video from the VA took a situation that was relatively easy to mend with some time and made it completely unsalvageable people through games of telephone Mok Velasco for the Show's Creator which made the Optics a thousand times worse for any Outsiders looking in and people even went through their previous post to dig up some dirt about them although to be fair the worst that was found was a sarcastic remark referencing Trump calling other countries [ __ ] holees so that didn't really go anywhere and from then on it led to a completely uncontrollable fire of chaos and in all honesty some of it went a bit too far like this image began circulating with the context that it was the crew behind Primos and a lots of people got mad because they f a bunch of white people and non-latin people were working on the show turns out this wasn't a crew photo so it was just a bunch of Disney employees taking a selfie you can tell pretty easily because I don't think the creator of Phineas and Ferb is making a show about mexican-americans right now safe to say it wasn't a good week at all basically any Goodwill Primos could have salvaged was incinerated thanks to one stupid video posted by the main VA doing a Columbo villain speech in response to justifi criticism frown at the show that she didn't even have to engage with in the first place this was a PR Nightmare and honestly even though people did take it too far and began spreading misinformation after a while I can't say the start of the backline towards the show in the video posted by Velasco was unwarranted people absolutely had a right to be upset and even angry after velasco's video it was an utter disaster through and through chapter 4 the show disappears then leaks due to the absolutely insane backlash Primos was delayed pushed back all the way to June 6th 2024 not going to lie never seen a Disney product get pushed back that far just from backlash either they were being super fough fixing every issue that people disliked or they were just waiting for the backlash to blow over no one really knew which one it was for sure but then out of nowhere a new redubbed version of the intro dropped I don't actually know where this came from but you can find it reuploaded across Twitter and YouTube and in said intro while there aren't any visual changes they do red up the roll call with the new name for the toddler she's now called lucita instead of kuga and apparently according to Insider information the finished intro would not only change the really bad city name but that every finalized episode with kagita and teramoto Heights have been fixed and redubbed while this doesn't confirm if any other problems have been fixed the effort is at least commendable also at the end end of May the unfinished pilot alongside two other finished episodes of the show just randomly dropped on pirate sites allegedly they were leaked on four chance no surprises there and I can't show these episodes because Disney will have me publicly executed I can however confirm that Disney's Primos is fine it's fine it's basically 100% what I thought it was going to be just an average Disney cartoon with all the quirks you'd expected to have kids are probably going to like it but I see no reason to care for the show as a show anymore now as a conversation piece that's interesting though that does bring us to my final point and overall conclusion what is actually happening to Primos as previously stated the show is going to premiere on June 6th but uh it's June 8th by the time this video goes up and I've seen no hide or hair of it it was completely removed from Disney scheduling weeks ago and they've stayed completely silent about it meanwhile the pilots along with two episodes just randomly leaked online for anyone to watch we can only assume the show has been delayed again but the Silence from Disney makes things seem very Grim for the show's future I mean it's not like I care about the show not getting it spot like personally but I do care for the genuinely talented people who did work on the show and either way the show just being held in limbo until Disney decides to drop it must suck for everyone involved and given the current state of the industry I'm pretty against having finished shows and movies be held in limbo regardless of quality it's very likely they'll be some sort of update about Primo soon but Disney silence says it all really I don't think they're at all happy with the show given the sh storm at Coors last year and the fact they've had to go back and re-edit and redub finished episodes just to avoid more backlash is very telling if this show gets renewed for another season that' be a miracle given the odds that are stacked against it and that's assuming it even does well in terms of ratings so yeah that's the story of how Primos became one of the most universally despised products Disney have ever produced before it even came out and I think everything surrounding the show should be a cautionary tale to anyone currently working on their own projects in Hollywood representation is incredibly important to get right and while it's impossible to satisfy everyone you should always be receptive to criticism and given you are representing the identities of millions to a wide audience also as a rule of f don't talk like like a Persona villain when you get called out that tends to go a long way that's the end of the video play yakaza or something and you're choking up because you could never Sho well you're spitting cing up Al cuz you smoking cigarettes and I'll bre my lip and set on the tong when I say we keep all bu because you could never shoot well you're spitting cing up alone cuz you're smoking cigarettes and I'll my
