there are very few cars that leave you wondering at every generation how could this get any better or any faster and if there's one thing we've learned as petrol heads it's that the 911 turbo is never ready to show you its final form it always has one more transformation one more power level to reach that will amaze us and this new generation 992 turbo s takes that idea even further dr wallacer said that they want to bring it even closer now to gt product and had a whole lot more emotion than the turbo has ever had in the past so today we're going to look at both the turbos history and then get behind the wheel of my own personal turbo s and see is this truly a super hyper car beating modern legend so guys once again today's episode is sponsored by my favorite sponsor it is piloti driving shoes the guys i nag for a year to get on the channel because i wanted to get you guys a discount which i've got 15 using the code rbr you can get any of their shoes including the new pagani based legacy s or the newly launched shift range which is their new model and the most comfortable to wear as i've said before driving shoes are not just for driving they are better than a normal shoe just like a performance car is better than a normal car in every way they not only give you better feel for your driving footwork but all day comfort you can see i've used them in almost every single rbr video even before being sponsored simply because i love them in that sense this isn't even really an ad i probably would have done this free for those guys but anyway for you guys 15 off use the code rbr15 so please i could give you a discount and honestly it'll really help the channel so enjoy it these are my favorite shoes guys so guys seven generations later we have got 650 brake horsepower turbo s that is crazy but where did the story all begin well it began in 1975 with this the 930 turbo debuted at the paris motor show this had a three liter engine single turbo producing 245 brake horsepower back at a time when a car with double the amount of cylinders was struggling to do the same power it was simply incredible now it had a low amount of shove in the lower end and lower revs but as soon as you passed 4 000 revs it would unleash its reserves so you can imagine when talent fell short versus the power and offer well that's how it got the name the widow maker now just like every other great sports car story it all began with homologation needed for racing series so it was due to be just a limited run product but it was so popular that it then became the flagship of the 911 line up until today now it was always visually distinctive the turbo with its wider arches its wing just like we have in our car today so with many iterations following this particular 930 stayed in production 15 years that's a huge amount of time it should give you an idea of just how far ahead of time it was when it was introduced in 1975. now after this came the 964 again absolutely brutal looking beast look at the whale tail look at the arches look at the carrera rs style wheels it was the true star of the bad boys movie with its 3.6 liter producing up to 360 brake horsepower and the zero to 60 was four seconds four seconds guys back then i mean it's incredible and i think for me bad boys was the film that i started thinking wow porsche is a really interesting brand i need to find out more about it and it's funny because porsche didn't actually want to be involved in the movie at that time until they saw it and then they loved it and they even threw a bad boys party apparently so after this then came the 993 generation again typical turbo looks this one brought in the first twin turbo engine we brought in all-wheel drive for the first time as well power was up to 400 brake horsepower and the zero to 60 3.2 seconds back in 1995. guys do you know how long ago that was this thing could embarrass a brand new aston martin that you bought today that is insane in my opinion this was also the first generation to have the turbo s arrived it had 24 more brake horsepower a bit more cooling and a few little visual differences after this came the fried egg generation of 911. the turbo in this derived its engine from the gt-1 race car which is very exciting of course the turbo s came in this generation as well with 450 brake horsepower and the ability to do 300 kilometers per hour this was also the generation that brought on the rear arch vents and of course this is now a typical turbo trait after this came the 997 now this actually links a little bit to our car today which still uses some of the tech that this brought in stuff like porsche attraction management or more importantly the variable turbine geometry turbos which gave a lot more low end shove than the old turbochargers used to but also maintained the high revving ability of a larger turbocharger all packed into one unit this also brought in the split wing design like we have till today in our car today this car eventually went up to 500 brake horsepower so again pretty damn impressive after this came the 991 generation now this had 620 newton meters of torque 560 brake horsepower and a 0-60 in three dead though tested a lot faster in car magazines again it brought on more tactical achievements like adaptive aerodynamics rear wheel steering for the first time as well in the turbo though even with the facelift in my opinion it just wasn't as exciting to look at as the previous generations and i think a lot of that came down to the 991 generation styling in that it was quite subtle and the lines were very again very subtle so you didn't really appreciate the muscularity of the turbo as much then we have today's car now this was a car that i drove and as a petrol head i could not help but buy if i could afford it and i did and it is just an incredible incredible car 992 does the impossible again it brings out yet another power level that you just did not think was possible 650 brake horsepower 800 newton meters of torque in the zero to 60 and 2.5 seconds in the coupe zero to 200 in 8 seconds and a top speed of 205 miles per hour this thing will match pretty much any super hyper car that you're going to find on the road with an added dose of practicality and looking less like a knob doing it all now as i said at the start dr wallacer was very keen that this car come closer to gt product because the feedback he got on the previous models were they were considered by customers as super fast gt cruisers rather than out and out track machines where the purists would either go to gts or straight to gt products so he wanted to close the gap and make the turbo even more dynamic how have they done that well initially they started with a new sport suspension which is an adaptive system that comes now into the turbo and a new sports exhaust system that's never been available on the turbo models both of these should help a with dynamics and b with emotion in terms of the engine changes though it's largely derived from the 991 series in this one we've got larger vtg turbocharger which are symmetrical so they are actually two different parts that apparently work better in harmony in order to produce that power we've also got electronic wastegates that react a lot faster we've got piezo injectors our exhaust manifold is straight out of the true widowmaker gt2 rs of the last generation as well porsche attraction management allows up to 500 newton meters on those front wheels and perhaps most crucially we've got a lot of changes in terms of aspiration and cooling so we've got four separate areas to cool the car of course the front air intakes with the adaptive aerodynamics we've got the rear vents on the arches which now have the air filters as well and we've got an extra grille just behind the rear windshield again larger this time so overall the apertures in order to cool the car much larger than the previous generation and you need it because of course we're producing that much more power the rear wing also reduces drag by 15 percent more compared to the previous generation and the active veins that we mentioned on the front not only help with the cooling aspect but also aerodynamics by reducing drag in everyday use but they also help in improving fuel consumption when they're closed as well this is the widest production 911 as well it's also the first turbo to have a staggered wheel setup of 2021 which i think really suits it and again thanks to this wide stance the big wheels it looks that much more gt like to me now there is a lightweight package available strips out the rear seats we add a carbon roof other lightweight saving measures such as stripping out insulation etc so you can avail that again coming closer to the motorsport versions and we've got an updated sport design package now this adds even more black accents that i've shown a different colored car we've got a split wing in a different design we've got the rear tail lights in a different design we've got carbon roof carbon mirrors black underneath those mirrors the wheels have a really interesting change and they are in a matte silver which i think actually looks really really good again i think it brings it closer to gt product and the front is actually quite different in terms of the lower edges having a different design and so much black again this i think will look quite similar to the 992 generation gt3 speaking of 992 generation gt3 big thanks to top gear and chris harris for getting us such a lovely scoop on that how fantastic does this car look how exciting is it going to be i can't wait weirdly the thing i'm most excited about is that annoying little thing that's called the gear lever in my car replaced by an actual proper old-school looking one and i'm so excited about this tiny little detail but yeah i love the color apparently it's called shark blue um we've still got the lovely four liter naturally aspirated engine in this again which is great news and it's going to be ents intense better i just love the look of it i think it's so motorsport can't wait to see this next year the inside pays homage to the previous turbos as well maintaining the exact same type of stitching that those used to have if you want to see more of the interior check out my collection video in my car where i've gone into quite a bit of detail i've got some really stupid options i don't know who spec this car but it's worth having good every time i drive this car it leaves me wondering how could it be so bloody good so guys 911 turbo s we've driven the cab as you know but now it's time to see what the more dynamic coupe can do first thing that i love about this car is the sound listen to that it's coming off the revs this is in sport mode you don't get the pops and bangs in sport plus because it's a much more efficient mode but even downshifting listen to that but of course this is the first turbo s with the sports exhaust system as well so for a customer like me who's used to amg's with loud sound etc this is a big big big tick box that you can get a car in the modern age as well with the opf and everything that sounds this good and i'll tell you this as well it's a lot louder than the standard carrera so4 s or perhaps if not louder definitely more characterful whereas before i was unsure if that was just a cabriolet thing now i'm definitely sure it's a turbo s thing the other thing that really drew me to this car was the looks because the old turbo s as i said did nothing for me whereas this particularly on the road it looks wide it looks different enough to the standard herrera s and the way the rear looks now particularly with the sports design plugs that have grown on me reminds me so much of the gt product particularly the gt2 rs so all of these factors came into my decision to actually buy this car the other thing that of course helped was driving the cabriolet because it showed me that this car could do this [Music] yeah i was already at 140 miles per hour and that was taking off at something like 70. this is how brutally fast this car is i genuinely mean that i've not driven anything that can do the speed that this can it is absolutely addictive to do this again and again and again i love this car speed how can this thing feel so light and go so quickly it's incredibly fast but it's why no means a pussycat it's not like driving a fast audi rs it still does want to kill you and i love that about this because i want to be slightly afraid i want to learn i want to better my driving style i don't want it to be easy the only car to my memory that does anything of the speed that this car does has to be the gt2 rs and that is high praise of this car because that was a rabid monster at almost 700 you know i'm always hoping on about modern cars having too much power more than you'll ever need and of course it's absolutely true of this more than any other but the fact it has it puts a huge smile on my face and one thing you cannot put a price on for a petrol head is that i'm not afraid of any hybrid car any electric car and this beast has nothing to fear from almost 99 of cars that have been made so far the other thing is the gearbox it is ultra ultra reactive it's got that lightning response that the gt product cars have people often talk about the manual porsche and why they love them so much but you don't realize just how incredible the pdks are next naturally we must come on to handling because this is the heart and soul of the porsche and the turbo s my god is it good especially in coupe form there was a little bit of wrangling to be done in the cabriolet but this car my god does it steer it happens so precisely now of course by no means am i saying that this is a big difference the old term os but genuinely there's more gt product in the way that this car handles itself and again the steering is so precise you can kind of just guide it with your fingertips and you'll get the greatest reward out of the smallest gesture it's so planted when going through corners it attacks them with a disdain and it's like the car is magnetically attached to the ground even in the most extreme of circumstances the tyres remain connected and it's just an incredible experience because then you can put all the power down that you want and the turbo s just rewards you every time you attack a corner you're going faster in and faster out and even then honestly the beast seems bored it wants you to go faster it wants you to call on those reserves of insane power just the ability to put down power out of a corner it's crazy the only things i've driven here that handle better than this have all been tracked cars think about that for a minute there are a lot of cars out in the world right now that can do 0-60 figures that are somewhat close to this but what most of them cannot do is behave in such a dynamic way that you would end up liking it to gt product porsche what else out there can do that with this car you seek out hairpins you seek out tight corners that you can test your skills and the car's abilities against turbo s is one of the world's most rewarding partners in this regard just the breadth of ability of this thing just astounds me in terms of normal driving it's such an easy car to drive i'm talking in terms of suspension steering throttle response in normal mode i really feel like the car's suspension is better than my a45 that is my daily car it's so effortless to drive around i've got 360 camera to help with the width of the car i've got night vision if i want it and i can even manage something crazy like 30 mpg or mileage which is incredible when you think this is 650 ps that mixed with the breadth of ability of like a daily gt car makes this turbo s just something that no other car can really compete with you know what i think would sell like absolute hotcakes but porsche will never do it a turbo s with gt product body kit and wing that would sell like nothing else because it's the ultimate daily it's close enough to those cars in real world use in terms of performance and it will look the absolute business i really think to myself how with a straight face can i then justify something like my upcoming gt black series when a car like this in real world usage has so much more breadth of ability so much more usable all year round i have been asked this question in comments and i do agree i don't know how i can justify it but my personal conundrum with the black series will extend to i think anyone who considers buying any other type of supercar that doesn't have the ability that this does in conclusion there are very few things in the world that can do what this does in terms of breadth of ability it's hard to justify any other supercar in front of it or even hyper cars yeah it's got the heritage to survive for long term to always look good to always look relevant that i don't think i'd be remiss in saying that the turbo s is truly the greatest sports car that you can buy this turbo s can do the grand tour thing it can do the sports car thing it can do the hyper car thing and it can handle like a track car if you wanted to it's the ultimate case of take your cake and eat it and it's one like me that you will love and love and love so guys i hope you enjoyed this full review of the turbo s coupe so if you enjoyed this please do subscribe and i'll see you guys next time
