[Music] podcasting equipment for beginners so I obviously want to start off by talking about microphones check one two my name is Pete Macpherson and you're listening to the do you even blog podcast but before I dive into those there's only three essential pieces of gear number one a device to capture audio number two a microphone which I have several of your today and number three something to connect those things like the core that comes with the microphone for beginners everything else is supplemental now in this box I actually have what I hope is a game changer for new podcasters and pretty much every other youtube video you can find on this subject you will see this little microphone recommended the ATR 2100 but as of last week audio technica announced that they are putting this little baby to bed that's right they are stopping production so here's what we're doing today I want to lay out the bare essential podcasting gear that is affordable you're not gonna spend five hundred dollars and easy to use and then we're gonna run through all the other stuff starting with mics here about five seconds and then we're gonna talk about stands and sound panels and equipment and headphones and interfaces and everything else you need to start a podcast alright microphones yes you could just use a built in microphone on your laptop or your phone check one two my name is Pete McPherson and welcome to the do you even blog podcast if you're gonna use anchor that's primarily what most people do and I'm gonna be honest with you as long as you're in a relatively quiet setting it really doesn't matter that much as long as people can not get distracted when they're trying to listen to you so that brings up my very first BFT I'm a big fat take away we are not going for NPR studio level podcasts we're not doing that what we're going for is what I like to call an MVP a Minimum Viable podcast what I mean by that is you should choose the gear the beginner equipment that will get you sounding good for as little effort as possible in this little money there's like another sticky thing right there there we go so if you're looking to buy a microphone not just use your phone there are a few options that I recommend for beginners not this this is the Heil PR 40 this is like a three hundred fifty three hundred twenty dollar microphone something like that and I don't recommend you go for that I don't think it makes that much of a difference that's why I ordered the pod mic right here is to try it out versus the traditional recommendation first up ATR 2100 check one two my name is Pete Macpherson and you're listening to the do you even blog podcast like I mentioned a second ago is disappearing but they are releasing a replica a new updated version I'll provide a link below but it's the same exact price as the pod mine but here's tip number one beginners grab a USB microphone if you're using a computer to record no matter what it is it's so much easier USB output you just want to plug it in to your computer and go you can't do that with the high out you can't even do that with the pod mic for those mics you will need an audio interface of some type or a mixer or something in an XLR cable this is what an XLR cable looks like and then that's probably not in focus but you have to buy a whole bunch of extra stuff if you want to record with it USB mic is plug and play now there's one other really cool option here and grab the cheapest lavalier mic you can find on Amazon check one two my name is Pete McPherson and you're listening to the do you even blog podcast this is an expensive lavalier mic it like has an you know thing here and it just looks like that you just plug it onto your shirt and in fact I'm wearing one right now this said I could take this off sorry audio I have it plugged in and going up through a shirt into the camera and this cost me $15 I don't even know why I bought it and this was like a 70 80 dollar lavalier microphone that I bought a long time ago that doesn't work half as well as the power D wise right here that I bout for like fifteen seventeen dollars on Amazon it works great I've used it for podcast I use it for YouTube what you're listening to right now is recorded via that microphone and it's so easy you can also just plug it into your computer in the microphone jack if it has one or if you're on a Mac you can just plug it into the headphone jack so that's like 15 20 bucks you can get a great lavalier mic and the good news about that is you don't have to worry about mic placement either you like put it to your shirt I could turn this way and you can still hear me but if you're looking at to upgrade just a little bit for your podcast I would recommend either the new ATR 2100 X or this one which I haven't tried yet I'm about to hear in a second but I heard really good things this is the rode pod Mic Check 1 2 check 1 2 my name is Pete Macpherson and you're listening to the do you even blog podcast and as I mentioned before it is XLR only so you will need an XLR cable and some sort of audio interface these are actually the same price these are $99 last point on microphones this is the first microphone I ever bought period like 11 years ago and the reason I stopped using this almost immediately it was like why is there so much room noise why is there so much echo why can I hear dogs barking three miles away it turns out because this is a condenser microphone dynamic microphone condenser microphone dynamic mic condenser mic dynamic mic condenser mic dynamic my condenser my dynamic my condenser my dynamic my condenser my a dynamic microphone is like a stage microphone you need to be like right up close on it when you're talking into it and it doesn't pick up a whole lot of room noise a condenser microphone is like a professional studio microphone that picks up everything in the room so unless you're in a professional studio with like sound paneling and no dogs barking three miles away dynamic man it's also way cheaper and more durable I recommend grabbing one under $100 both of these are hundred bucks they sound amazing next up a device to capture audio so honestly your phone and your computer and or an iPad or what you should use you got a computer you got audacity or some other like software to record in USB mic boom you are actually good to go USB mic computer good to go however if you're doing like multiple guests in the same location like you and your buddies there are a few options you have here you can grab an audio recorder this is a zoom h5 I believe they make a zoom h4 and a zoom h6 you plug XLR is in there you can actually just record from the top of it they got a mic right here this was like two $300 to h6 is more expensive that h4 is a little bit less expensive this this is a Sony micro recorder I bought for like 70 80 bucks and this little guy is surprisingly sweet there is no XLR inputs there's no USB input you can only record from the little itty bitty microphone input right there but if this combined with like a lavalier for like a hundred bucks you could record anywhere anytime they'll be really great but in general just use your computer if you have one alright so if you were using an XLR microphone like that one the pod mic or the high lpr 40 right here and you're still going to record in your computer you're gonna need a little audio interface of some type this right here is a bearing er 204 I paid about $100 for this it has two main inputs as you can see right there and gain and knobs and all that's the but the output is a little bit of a USB so you plug your XLR mic into some sort of audio interface and you plug the audio interface into your computer and then kind of like a USB connection there's also the road caster there's also a million other like mixers and audio interfaces that can range anywhere from 60 70 bucks to a hundred dollars like I paid all the way up to like three four five hundred thousand dollars like they're insane they can get a sanely in spensive this is why I recommend a USB microphone to start for beginners the ATR 2100 x like it's more than up it sounds great as a reminder I will link to all of these resources in the video description below next up is cables and attachments so when you buy like a USB microphone it probably comes with the USB cable to like plug it into your computer however I have like a new Mac broke and I can't do that so I have to get like some sort of attachment to put a USB into a USB C 3 as realize that was upside down whatever whoo - this was like $30 there was also like another tiny one which I love like if this guy it's so small I don't know if it's gonna focus on my camera you'd make sure to have like the right cables and attachments and all that stuff the next thing I want to talk about this actually might be required for beginner podcasters a mic stand now when I bought my ATR I actually bought it as a package deal here and it came with this guy this was like a desk mounted boom stand that I hated by the way I hated it it wouldn't work on my desk at the time so I went on Amazon and got this little guy for roughly $30 it has a huge weighted base it is actually very small it folds up I could just throw it in the car it'll work with just about any mic stand attachment right here that comes with your microphone and the best part it was $30 I'll link to it below is gator frameworks something something go on the Amazon look for something like this they also have like similar ones that are like 20 to 50 dollar range well worth the investment one other absolutely required piece of gear for beginner podcasters is headphones and the good news is you probably already have something just enough these are my $8 Panasonic headphones I swear I had tried over 50 pairs now that's not true maybe like 12 pairs of headphones and these so good these little earbuds if you're looking to drop dime and go hardcore I recommend upgrading to Audio Technica same folks that you know put the ATR 2100 to bed they make headphones they look like this they have like four different models that are different prices this is the most expensive pair I got this on Black Friday on Amazon for like 15 20 percent off plus they look they're now super cool and you're the coffee shop doing your podcast editing oh one last thing when you record always wear headphones on interviews next up is wind screens and pop filters when I bought my ATR again years ago it actually came with a pop filter so if you have like a nice office or somewhere where you're gonna be able to keep a microphone stand up all the time by all means go grab you a pop filter if you're anything like me you hate these in fact if you want this comment below and I'll give it away for somebody for free I use windscreens this is a super old one it's super dirty kind of gross these are little foam things that are literally I got a pack of five of these for like seven dollars on Amazon and they're designed to block win like you're gonna be recording something outside you probably know one like news anchors microphones but they also help block out just a little bit of pluses floats with plosives can you say that word if you just did that without a pop filter it would say like be really bad on the microphone that's what pop filters are for a windscreen as long as you're using proper mic placement which generally speaking you shouldn't you talking right into the microphone super close you want to angle just a little bit that air doesn't actually hit the microphone directly super cheap Amazon just grab some wind screens oh and this is part of why I'm super looking forward to trying out the pod mic this has a built-in pop filter in the thing can you see it no that's because it's hidden this next one's weird but I swear it's important for a lot of things actually an external hard drive that may sound silly but audio that are actually can be pretty big file sizes if you have larger shows especially and if you want to keep anything instead of deleting it as soon as it's like done or published which I don't recommend doing you keep backups oh I have to I have like a WD like literally like 4 terabyte it costs like a hundred fifty bucks super huge and slow and bulky and I also have a samsung portable SSD t3 it's like 256 gigs it's super speedy and I literally don't leave home without it everything is on this disc I don't put anything on my computer last thing I really want to mention in this video are sound panels little foam acoustic sound panels I bought a pack of these for like 20 bucks on Amazon there's some there there's some back in here there's some of them like a door in my room as well as some like back over there I'm gonna be honest with you unless you just have a separate office in your house that is just your podcasting studio do not buy foam panel in fact I'm literally going in my bedroom right here see that that's a pillow that will also dampen sound see that that's carpet that will also dampen pillow comforter curtains blankets I can take all these things and literally just put them around my desk or anywhere near my microphone and that will actually absorb sound the only thing this stuff does is just reduce room echo so you just want to make sure you're surrounding yourself with soft things not hard surfaces think pillows blankets chairs curtains all that stuff will actually help you get a better sound on your podcast as crazy as that sounds you need a thing to record into you need a microphone a dynamic mic condenser bad dynamic good other than those two things the only other beginner gear I would really recommend is getting a mic stand or you could totally cheat and grab like a $15.00 live mic and if you're recording with multiple guests you will need some sort of mixer or interface or a recorder that can support multiple inputs so after you have your bare essential gear you're going to want to learn how to edit and how to format your show if you haven't already and how to monetize and get sponsorships I will link to this beginner podcasting playlist as a metric ton of useful videos for you go check that out watch those and otherwise thank you for watching the do you'll even blog YouTube channel Pete here out go
