hi and welcome back the playhead that little vertical red line that sits in your timeline that simply shows you where you are in your edit right well did you know that the playhead can also be used to help you trim as well so in this episode I'm going to show you some tips techniques and shortcuts to help you trim quicker using the playhead position including my favorite trimming [Music] [Applause] function the advantage of using the playhead position for trimming is that it's quick and accurate for instance you may have already use the playhead simply as a way of quickly trimming a clip to a certain duration using snapping but there are many other groovy ways that the playhead can be helpful when trimming for instance you can use the trim start and trim end functions in the trim menu to easily top and tail a clip in the timeline simply place your playhead over the clip in the timeline and choose trim start to resize the start of the clip to the playhead position choosing trim end will of course resize the end of the clip to the playhead if you want to riple the clips instead of Simply resizing them and leaving a gap make sure the timeline is in trim edit mode now the same trim start and trim end commands will Ripple the timeline to work even quicker you can use the keyboard shortcuts shift open square bracket to trim the start and shift close square bracket to trim the end but you can also Ripple trim a clip without actually having to enable trim edit in the selection mode you can use the Ripple start to playhead command on a Mac the keyboard shortcut for this is shift command open square bracket and on a PC it's shift control open square bracket to Ripple the end of a clip just use the Ripple end to playhead option shift command close square bracket on a Mac and shift control close square bracket on a PC this can be very useful when you want to trim a part of your timeline that has different clips at different lengths for example to quickly trim all the clips at the start of this timeline so they start at the same point I'll just press shift command open square bracket to Ripple the starts to the playhead and to trim all the clips to the same length at the end of the timeline I'll just use shift close square bracket as I don't need to Ripple anything after this point but maintaining the Fades on each clip of course this is great when you need to trim all the clips on all the tracks to the same point but what if you only need to trim some clips on some tracks but not others well you could lock or disable the auto TR selector for each of the tracks you don't want to trim however this will prevent these tracks from Rippling in sync with the other tracks amongst a whole host of other things and constantly having to turn these controls off and then back on again is more hassle than it's worth honestly if I was you just leave Auto track selector turned on for all tracks instead just simply select the clip or clips that you want to trim once you've made the selection you can then use the trim start or trim end functions as before and here are a few power tips for selecting Clips in the timeline firstly you can select the clip under the play head by choosing select nearest clip from the trim menu or by pressing shift V if link selection is turned on this will select the linked video and audio clips to change the selection between just the video or the audio clip you can choose to toggle the video and audio from the trim menu or press option you on a Mac or alt you on a PC alternatively you may want to enable the selection follows playhead option in the timeline menu this will automatically select the uppermost clip in the timeline either way to change the selection to another clip in the timeline hold command on a Mac or control on a PC and use your up down left and right arrow keys to change the selected clip commands you can view by clicking the select submenu in the edit menu and a similar command exists when you simply want to roll an edit towards the bottom of the trim menu you'll find the roll sub men with two commands as it suggests the roll start to playhead option will roll the edit point before the playhead forward providing there enough handles on the previous outgoing clip of course naturally roll end to playhead will do the same for the edit after the playhead position although there aren't any default keyboard shortcuts for these commands it's easy to add your own just open the keyboard customization window from the D Vinci resolve menu in the commands list select the trim menu and type roll in the search field to show only the roll commands here I'll add the keyboard shortcuts control W and control Q as I know these are not being used on a PC you could use Control Alt W and control alt Q instead click save creating a new keyboard mapping preset if prompted so now I can use those shortcuts to roll the start or the end of the selected clip in the timeline now all of these trimming functions work fine so long as the playhead intersects the clip that you want to trim in other words the playhead must be over the clip in the timeline and generally you want to make the clip shorter but what if you want to make the clip longer or do something a little bit more complex well for that you need to use my favorite trimming function and that is the extend edit the extend edit is simple to use just select the edit point in the manner that you want to adjust it place the play head where you want to adjust it to and choose extend edit from the trim menu the keyboard shortcut is easy to remember for this one as it's just the E key and the selected edit will be instantly trimmed to the playhead more often than not I'm using the end edit in order to create a split edit by Rolling the video edit point in this example I'll turn link selection off so I can select this video edit then I'll move the play head to where I want the split to happen and press e will roll the selected edit point to the playhead creating an instant and accurate J cut Comm mensky yeah I'm aent Jenkins this is aent Lopez and the advantage of the extend edit is it's a same function no matter which side of the edit I happen to be on so I don't have to think about whether I want to trim the start or the end of a clip for instance let me position my playhead here and select the next Video Edit pressing e extends the edits to the playhead creating the L cut but now I can refine the position further by simply changing the playhead position around the edit and pressing e again and here are some more power tips when it comes to to selecting edit points in the timeline from the trim menu just choose select nearest edit point or press V to select the edit Point nearest the play head for Linked clips and with link selection enabled this will select both the Audio and Video Edit points I can now use the up and down arrow keys to jump between the different edits in the timeline to toggle the direction of the selected edit you can choose edit Point type from the trim menu or simp L press U on your keyboard this will switch in turn between roll incoming and outgoing selections and back to roll and you can also use extend edit when in trim edit mode as well simply ensure you're in trim edit mode in the timeline then select one side of an edit move your playhead to the desired location and press e to extend this will Ripple the selected edit points making the clip shorter or longer if required and the final tip I have for you in this episode is when it comes to adjusting your edits in real time this is something we often call Dynamic trimming or jkl trimming start by selecting your edits in the timeline then hold the command key on a Mac that's control on a PC and then use the JK and L keys to trim the edit in real time this can be done in either selection or trim edit modes so can be used to Ripple and roll edits as well as slip or slide Clips when you initially select the clips Dynamic trimming will let you slip the footage to change to slide right click the dynamic trim button alternatively press s on its own to switch between slip and slide trimming using the dynamic trim Button as a guide to which one is currently [Music] [Applause] [Music] selected
