I think it way if I start in the next 30 seconds and I stay awake I think I can start this coherent Li okay you ready I'm Tom and this is the part benjin we're actually in a park again yes we are there are still baby birds around this time I promised Matt that I'm not going to get distracted in something point my camera even gonna fail and today's topic is food in London because we are humans which means we eat and we live in London so combining those two we ate in London today in suspiciously specific canals hello fellow people I also enjoy the food I promise I'm human this is kind of a wide-ranging topic but we both make your own food so I'm telling it until one show segment um should we categorize it yes and I think we should start with junky unhealthy funky food yeah that makes thanks widget so are we recommending to tourists if you are coming from the business place or are we recommending to locals but these are places you might want to try what should we do bug let's classify as we come up with them all right because I'll be honest I haven't done much preparation I've mainly got Foursquare open on my phone yeah both of us it turns out use use an app called Foursquare which is like Yelp if Yelp one less popular it partners up with the partner app called swarm which used to be part the same things he can check in places don't request this as friends on there because it tells you it says where we are we will deny use yeah thank you um but what it does give me is a history of places I've been and like and like because you can like the places you've been yes so junkie I'm going to go straight in as something really obvious for Americans but not necessarily quite obvious for non-americans yet even though they're spreading yep five guys oh really they're my favorite fast-food burger I'm not saying this is amazing but I'm not always go I'm not sold on them but there are better places in London that like the ointment okay meat market and the meat X chain yes meat market meet mission meet liquor yes better they are they are however the type of burger I know we have arguments about this where there is so much stuff in it and so much sauce is a very a very wet experience it is amit is a moist burger now we have argued about this before because i prefer even for a food to be crispy and i just like the food mostly better you put some gravy on it [Laughter] yes i'd say meat market is one of my favourite burger places it's right next to Covent Gardens if you're a tourist and in it's worth going to and it's in the old Covent Garden Market I have been a history that yeah they've kind of covered up the history with branding it gets to be the plastic fluttered things yank it wiggle out of the way and look through into the market but now it's is window it was branding on the branding but the whole chain are is is very good as far as I can tell all eating I'm always wary recommending this that's nice but exquisite it suits my taste it's what I like it's not you know amazing food it's a burger and it's a bit burger it's made with real meat and it tastes like actual food and I don't have a particularly adventurous palate so I'm I'm good with that they do alcoholic milkshakes as well if Insectarium so that's the burger recommendation I'm going to move down to got a specific thing here ah let's talk about courage okay that fits into stodgy yes it does it also fits into our British food really okay um I was going to suggest assume yes I've heard uh so I it is not authentic by any means and I wouldn't say there's anything like generic British curry house either no although it's fair and I'll link within the in the description there is an excellent long read article about the death of the British curry house okay the through for those who don't know was not in the UK through the 70s 80s 90s the traditional British curry came from the takeaway in whichever town you were in yes but a combination of ready meals you can now to buy one from the supermarket are changing immigration policy changes in what the next generation of immigrants want to do and changing he taught economics and palates mean that they're steadily dying out only and what you're getting is places like issue which you kind of take it up it's still anglo-indian food would yeah but it's kind of taken up a notch it's not just one source with different stomachs interest a thing to beware of add assume it is a bit pricier it is in a normal career place but it's it's an experience as well yeah the Jews are out the door for about 90 minutes a peek under the design inside the one I've been in is a bit colonial which yeah it's making a Bombay cafe in the nineteen twenties Bombay not Mumbai I noticed the pointing out and I'm just oh is that all could I have known colonialism that just makes you clench ever-so-slightly the cupboard joke so I can I use the phrase colonial clenching I don't know but I just did to learn your Glen oh dear okay carrying on usually has little you can say about yes we continue touring the world I've got another start yep which is somewhere else in the world isn't boudin oh yes but both bodings I think the closest you can get in Britain to proper American barbecue which is a bit like saying that there's somewhere that does Mexican food in London there might be it's not very patch on anywhere that actually does Mexican food yeah um but I think boudin is probably closest you can get and it's like it's the kind of American barbecue food which is a a slow-cooked bit of animal which is now very very wet and very very stringy in a in a breaking apart kinda way and all the barbecue sauces and it's served just on a slab of tray with you know I got a brief flirtation with veggie going vegetarian reason hmm and Bodines and one of the reasons why because it's lovely just add too much meat I've some poise a lot bang but that is a lot of a thing that used to be alive and that's weird and that was one of the things that maybe I should maybe I should try this maybe I should and then I I've stuck with it for a month and then my body went you're not getting enough protein and the options are either go back to eating meat or do I'll have an enormous amount of hassle it turns out I don't care about animals enough I am on dementia a bad person and I apologize your palate isn't adventurous enough first I just can't get tougher I just do not understand it it's just not I know they're going to be vegetarians in the comments going all you need to do is this listen this yeah but I'd say veggie half the time when I'm cooking out I'll go all the time I don't actually buy meat to cook at home partly because I live in a tiny flat you can't get the smell of cooking meat or bugging me out of the place but it's also cheaper in life things are talking about vegetarianism I will suggest Mildred's oh yes I realized the other day there are two of them there are at least two of them now I've heard people have very strong opinions on Mildred's I really like it it has some excellent vegetarian food for not unreasonable practice for London but I've also heard someone say they dislike it the reasons that the food isn't adventurous or interesting enough it just didn't taste good so I'm worried that people who are actual vegetarians may have better options here but I'm only going into it good yeah for me going as a meat-eater into into a friend's birthday party it was it was really I've been there with vegetarians who enjoy the money yes because it's not a nut roast the one takes me to beware of the one I've been to is in Soho it is tiny hmm and you will need to wait for a table I don't think you're allowed to book either but they've got a bar and you can get cocktails my favorite thing on the menu there is a deep-fried risotto cake that's like arancini yeah yes but crispy and it's served in a creamy sauce so if you eat yet slowly than you can get you can get this so you want a soggy and cheesy inside all so one's kind of have influx of ramen places in the last few years one has food fads essentially about 10 years 10 years ago burrito joint started to open and about three to five years ago it was ramen places okay and I stand by tonkatsu as being one of the better I seen a few friends have been there quite a bit yeah I I know no friend of ours has very strong opinions on ramen our concoct Oh seems to be accessible and very good cool it's certainly a Shetty revenue yeah there's several I suppose one out east near haggis turn and there's one on in Soho but it's not ludicrously expensive make sure you is and it's not bad okay while rip that and the world in Chinatown there is Tokyo diner oh yes I forgot not sells Japanese food yeah it's good it's really good really fresh tasting yep Cairo nearby is also very good there are two brunches in Soho and it's my go-to for I mean when when I'm making the sushi fresh in front you and conceding the ultimate kitchen it's pretty good cook um there's a Chinese restaurant around the corner that sells not generic British Chinese takeaway Chinese food that I like but I don't know the name I will look that up now while you talk about something else well I think I like there's a lot of place in Soho for tourists and the trouble is yeah but inevitably our tourists will we'll go we'll go around and then they will end up in Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse No that is purely put there to catch the tourists you only find them in Leicester Square Piccadilly Circus and that kind of tourist place yep they charge ludicrous amount and if you look at the reviews because every couple years one of the major newspapers will realize that they can send their food critic into an Angus Steakhouse just listen and get a really vicious bitter at one point I think the Guardian sent in not only their food pretty but also the guy who runs Hawksmoor which is arguably the best steak house in Lafayette investor I thank you steak house and as I recall they didn't even get two bites into it well in just this excoriating series of insults directed at the place followed by let's followed by the guy who runs the Hawks more don't go right let's go I'll just take you over I'll give you a proper steak I'm just it would get out if there's one advice I could give tourists it is never going to anything with like steak house in neon letters on the outside in a tourist area don't do it don't you we've recommended the Hawks more before things that are good in little bit yes we home if you want a very expensive steak but up very nice day yes that's a place to go locals keep an eye out when they open a new one if you're lucky in the lottery you can get a table for their 50% off soft opening okay yeah every time they open a new one there's about two three week period where they're bedding everything in and they're top off all food but essentially they just put the thing up saying when would you like a table it's like good luck huh tiny town I think it holds more a couple times because I have quite lucky friends yeah um I stunned run through these now old I found the name I found the name ah I gotta have transit because it's Bao Bao these badly in is how I'm going to say it Bao said I in I'll put the names on my piercings and it's in Chinatown it's sold Chinese food that was applied Chinese takeaway alright we're gonna have a full argument about about a place called dip and flip the rid of it just french dip sandwiches oh it's one of God's injunction so that's how you get a sandwich and then drown it yeah yeah it's um it's not as good as like Philippe's in LA which is the place that is meant to live in entered it and it's it but it's still it's good and if someone who's likes sandwiches that have gravy on them I'm good yes I forgot to point out that it's just in it we're not going to say out loud because it wasn't very good but I like that it's any little enough that it's not meant to have a like on it don't have the wrong rating dropped a couple of notches here we are I am starting to run out of places now I think we've run through pretty much everything we haven't recommend a single pizza pie now yet you go first our union our or mod yeah I was going to say mod or the other one like in Rome the name of the union is it Calvin wrote given me so I couldn't believe this that a pizza place it openly must not a visa sponsored by the way this was obvious yeah we have not received any sponsorship for anything here which I do things we like I could not believe that not only at a pizza place opened in Leicester Square that was reasonably priced but it was also good it's taking the subway way of doing sandwiches but for pizza yeah so you you pick your base and then you go down the counter and no doubt you that's that you said you weren't going to get distracted a bear adorable look at that that's lovely okay so what you basically should learn there is don't trust me we're baby ducks are involved I'm sorry subway you as a project leader yes um yet I need pinkie toppings you check them on and they cook it and it's one price for all I think this seems like such a blindingly obvious idea that I can't believe it didn't happen I saw it when I was in LA a couple years ago yeah I thought this is obvious how has no one done this before to Britain this is a new concept Union peaches not quite pick your own exact toppings but it's still incredibly fast cheap pizza near Kings Cross that's that's very much worth it Hanna comes back yes another looking for looking for a better helicopter no no I want to just try and talk over the helicopter because why not because I really are underneath it yeah the rails is one thing I was going to offer God's sake no laughing oh and I don't know which one to recommend because there's there's several other yeah I don't have a bath for quality on this all I know is the one I went to ignorant okay um one of the advantages of living in London is that there is every cuisine in the world here pretty much and you can get Eritrean and Ethiopian food and it is lovely it's a series of stews and curries they get served on flatbread we pick up some of the flatbread you take some rest you cooking them out and it's lovely if I was a group brilliant I'm not gonna recommend a specific one I'll probably or a couple possible names up yeah um but he's been years since I've been to one okay but if you want to try something that is different and also very very nice thoroughly recommend trying eritrane food to levels I've heard other people say good things that it equals I now if I remember they have any um Harry bready stuff yes traditional should be made with test flour which is gluten-free but that's really really difficult to get in Britain sorry I think we use something else you can get getting with rice if you gluten-free anyway it's lovely I I might be misremembering my history here but I think it's because it has a strong Italian influence in the colonial days again okay I'm totally good source of lean time yeah and we mentioned burritos we haven't sort of reserved yeah I'm not I'm not referencing I'm not referencing for each other because because burritos are an emotional subject I discovered this in San Francisco yeah absolutely no conversation in San Francisco I had with people that was like I've had a burrito yeah oh where did you go it turns out I'm not a fan of the San Francisco burritos to lard excuse to big butt burritos are an emotional subject so I'm not gonna recommending to put it to the chain yeah that's the thing everyone that eats burritos seems to have a massive opinion on it yeah the ones I prefer Vanitas hat but I've never been to Mexico all of you as you pronounce it Benito shot I moved to face and these are not Mexican burritos you gotta califor this is a anglicized version of a California sized version of type xmax burrito so yeah it econ call it Mexican at all and you're just using it a very broad term in the same way that Pizza can mean very different things every culture has a sandwich every culture has here is a ready starch that we put some stuff on or in it's the most basic booster yeah everyone has opinions about please share your burrito opinion the Philadelphia Barberie services have its infamous driver seriously I swear someone on a website for a white London Review of burritos I bet it does now are there any other food categories and healthy salad II I mean we did vegetarian but deep fried we got oval yeah that's not exactly I let's be honest we're not recommending healthy food here if you want that you go to a pret or something you get a salad do better yeah it's all change ladies I can think yeah I will recommend one final thing good grief mmm dessert but Carol okay before we get to the video and it's a thing that I backed out has ever been recommended out loud before because it's just a cast right that people go to in that lunch break yup to pick up a thing and then you go and eat at the desk yep it's on some Martins Lane and you are you about to recommend your lunch cafe because people will find me yuda now I don't go there very okay I tried to dairy with them alright this is a place called Fernando yep and it serves the biggest jacket potatoes I have ever sang in my life this place goes to the massive portions oh yeah over sort of Italian Bob sort of pass through food and then they have sandwiches Doug but can you hold the microphone here for cam stop big fat big jacket potatoes in a positive a camera what bigger ah and then the it's in one of those open your boxy things yes and the entire thing fills the whole thing so then it doesn't close properly yes for a bout of fiver if you would like that much for lunch uh I don't need dinner for the reason that's why I don't go there - uh yeah desert me say ah yes I'm sure I'm gonna recommend something else you have ice cream opinions I have ice cream opinions I'm trying to eat less sugar lately so I'm not been going there as much uh but I have strong opinions on ice cream and I think the best ice cream in London is from a place called large gelateria on you will row near Covent Garden try the chocolate and dark dark chuckling chilly one possibly don't order an entire until I figure the dark chocolate in Chile as ice cream or sorbet it is the creamiest sorbet depending on what's on on the day yeah it varies based I want to have a dynamic vinegar I screamed they're not one incredibly good I had a battle one mmm I think there's a battle sorbet but it's quite there sorbets a creamy did it's it's like ice cream I once took a friend there and he not realising that they had a savory mushroom like cheap porcini one okay and he I mean I'll try that I mean took a little thing off those over no and walked out I'm not having that spot so he's not having savoury i sleepwalk hell yeah just suck I cannot have ice cream now you have ruined ice cream for me for today I have never heard of anyone ragequitting and ice cream shop i'd recommend go meals have more conventional flavors memorably never go to a liquid nitrogen ice cream bars a couple in London now other they're terrible you can't taste the on screen before you have it because it's not ice cream until you order it and the type of the consistency doesn't work it's either too cold you can't taste it or it's melted um but yeah but those are my ice cream routines any other dessert you don't go to a place for desserts though do you you don't I mean I know it anyway that's something in some areas like some cultures have a separate restaurant you go to for dessert it's not really anything no I think that's it I think we recommend a lot of places but I think I think we have done our job and now we have to see if anyone's going to go there not that we're going to be able to find out we're not watching you a camera in each of these places yet centered them there you go that's the end of this video I cut stuff up - yep good
