welcome back so i've got three pieces of art here to critique a let's get started the shading here is pretty good but something that i noticed is things that are on top for example this hat right here you don't need to just shade one side it actually looks a little bit more natural if you shade if you shade the the top on both sides you see that looks a little bit more natural than just shading one side because realistically there wouldn't be a light just right here you like my because like my light yeah okay so another thing is outlines around the outside are great and on the inside when they're separating objects it's fine too but for example right here on the neck this collar probably doesn't need an outline it'll make it easier to see this thumb pixel and it doesn't look so much like he's wearing a scarf the same color of his as his skin if you don't remember that outlines are great for separating objects but since this is literally on you know the skin it's not protruding or anything so we don't need to put an outline there it looks like your shading's off a little bit here it doesn't even go so far in there and over here you probably would want a little bit more here just a couple little highlights going around i'm being a little bit nitpicky here i also noticed that you have some doubles for example here these two pixels stack you don't need to have two pixels there you don't need to have two pixels there pick one or the other try not to stack pixels so this leg here looks pretty straight but this one's bending that's a little bit odd and if both legs are bending that would be a weird way to stand that would actually get rid of the bend that you have in this leg i'm doing it really quick here but you get the idea i would probably remove so much bending and if it and if this leg is bending i wouldn't draw this leg the same way the thickness of your legs drastically changes in different areas just try to keep it the same thickness all around that still looks kind of funny let me um let me adjust this i think it's okay to put the legs closer here you really don't need to have a character have their legs really far apart unless they're doing an action pose also i don't really think you need to make shading messy on purpose i'm cleaning up the shading you have on the pants here a little bit whenever you're shading don't just sprinkle you know pixels around it it will look like the fabric is wrinkly or whatever but that's an unnecessary detail especially when you're doing pixel art really be picky about what you shade so a couple of quick things that i noticed it's not really even pixel art i i don't think the jacket would be flapping out quite that much i would probably decrease the you know these uh these flaps here and the character's head it's it looks like it's a little bit far back out i would i would move it over i'm gonna move it over and then i'm gonna make it a little bit rounder and i think that that looks a little bit more natural what i like to do often is um just have the chin outlined but you but not really outline the entire head especially if the character's looking sideways from the side you'll be able to see the neck connecting to the head so you don't need to put an outline if the character is looking to the side from the side also here under the chin there shouldn't be a highlight i get that you're trying to highlight the side of the neck but under the chin you would actually have a shadow always put a shadow under under the neck i'm just gonna put this around here in a couple of other places there we go a little bit in the corner in the hat here all right i think we can move on to the next piece of art wow this one has some great isometric art but i think your problem is colors that's the only thing that really bothers me here i see some this done often where on the ground for wood people put really really dark um outlines and i wouldn't do this so i'm just gonna fill this up that was not a good color i'm gonna fill this in and make it darker but not as dark as it was before you guys see that on let me do um let me turn off contiguous that way it'll change it everywhere in the composition so now the floor looks a lot more like one thing because if you do very very high contrast in pixel art it starts to look like you're really emphasizing the separation of objects or you're doing some kind of thing with perspective so don't don't get too carried away with the contrast i'm one of the developers working on dwarve it's a tower defense dungeon crawler rpg you can wish to sit on steam now and please do if you watch my furniture video you can tell that i like to add highlights instead of outlines near some of the edges so for example here where the toaster is you have doubles here too so these right here they're all doubles and you don't need these pixels if you feel like there need to be pixels there use some kind of in-between color like this so you do some anti-aliasing but what i prefer to do is i prefer to add a highlight so i replace that dark outline color with a highlight and it really makes some objects look nice you can do the same thing with the countertop up here this color right here could be a highlight but i'm not so sure it's necessary i'll do it real quick just to see what it looks like [Music] so it didn't come out that great and the reason is because your countertops are already white so i can't really add a highlight there and it kind of just looks like there's a line missing so in this case i will leave it there but maybe you could consider making it a little bit lighter for this oven if you wanted to emphasize the glass you could create a new layer and then you know give a give it an opacity actually let's not give it an opacity i'll show you how to i'll show you another way to do it and then go ahead and draw a diagonal going across and i'm gonna fill it oops oh i'm gonna turn contiguous on there we go and then usually what i do is wherever i do a highlight i just do another thinner highlight next to it and it looks a little bit more natural but let's say this is uh the glass highlight to emphasize that there's glass there we can go here and now we can mess with the let me see what it looks like here in that there we go now i can mess with the opacity to pick exactly the transparency that i want instead of going down here and choosing the alpha for the color this one's really good but can you guys guess what two things i think i should critique this video is sponsored by skillshare skillshare is a learning community for artistic creative people like you they have a ton of different tutorials for stuff as you can see my recommendations are mostly video game dev stuff pixel art and unity which is the game engine i'm using one of my favorite new teachers i discovered is mieslav he goes over several pixar programs like pascal which i haven't tried yet and then jumps into the fundamentals of pixel art i noticed some of you already started following me on skillshare so i got to make videos on there the first 1000 subscribers to click the link in the description we'll get a free trial of premium memberships so you can explore your creativity the first one is gonna be that i can't tell what this is in the middle here i'm not sure i'm not sure what that is i'm just gonna for fun make it into a a bow so i'm gonna keep some of the colors here but i i really couldn't tell what that was don't try adding too much detail because sometimes it's too difficult to understand what it is that you're trying to portray all right there we go that was the first thing i love how the outline gets lighter near the top so of course i gotta compliment you on that the thing though that i think i should critique is your shading it's in the right spot but the thing that you can improve on is the contrast when you're this close doing pixel art it's always very easy to see the gradients to see the shading but when you look at it from far away it almost looks like one color a quick way that you can that you can edit the contrast especially if you're using a sprite there's a link in the description below is to go to adjustments and then go to human saturation or brightness and contrast so let's go ahead and go to brightness and contrast and here we're going to increase contrast it doesn't look like increasing contrast fix that problem that's okay though because what you can do is if you go to your paint bucket tool which by the way you should have shortcuts set up so you can quickly pick them we can go there and then let's say we wanted this color to be darker actually i'm going to start with this one i'm just going to go to a darker color and then i'm going to turn off contiguous and it will fill it everywhere in the composition boom all of a sudden look at look at the thumbnail i'm in the preview you can see there's a much much bigger contrast i might have overdone it so let me go just a little bit darker and we can really see now that it's bringing out the contrast i'm gonna make this color a little bit darker as well because this snout sticks out on the bear i would definitely give it an outline you don't have to use the color black but i would i would do something like this to give it an outline and for the bow maybe we don't need to have such a dark outline let me pick something in between maybe something like this the reason i don't want to do a very very dark outline for the bow is because if you have two dark colors next to each other even if it's like blue and brown they start to almost look like the same line and then it's harder to differentiate the object using color if you want to be in next month's pixel art critique follow and dm me on twitter send me the actual pixel size of the image so that way i can edit it don't send it to me big and blown up and also make sure it's a png i checked my mentions so make sure to tag me because i love seeing what you guys draw and if it's really cool i'm going to retweet it don't forget i have a free rss pack on it and you can follow me so you know when i updated it link in the description i gotta get back to working on twitter i'll see you guys next week dev live
