[Music] welcome to Mr fayton [Music] classroom hey there third graders in this lesson we're going to be taking a look at physical adaptations we'll be looking at the physical or structural adaptations which are present in animals and in plants and so what are adaptations they are the process which enables organisms to adjust to their environment in order to ensure survival there are the features on animals or plants that allow them to live and thrive in their given habitats so adaptations in certain environments are great and in other environments they would not be so great an adaptation that lets you uh thrive in scorching heat would not be an adaptation that you would want if you lived in a place that was very cold so animal adaptations are these features that the the physical adaptations are these features in both animals and plants that allow them to thrive in the places that they live and that's why we need to understand it is because it helps us identify why an animal or a plant is successful in a given environment so animal adaptations we're GNA we talked yesterday about behavioral so we're going to really focus today on structural physical structural or phys physical adaptations are the way an animal is made or built those might include things like Thorns or quills teeth or a beak feet or Claws and then uh a tail as well those different physical features that help the animal to live so we can see some structural adaptations here camo and it might help with um hiding also the main feature on a giraffe is the long neck and what does that help with um eating they can eat things that are very high up that other animals can't reach an elephant well they're massive and that will help them to protect themselves a shark a shark is has very sharp teeth what does that help the shark with it helps it with hunting and a frog a frog is very small how does that help the Frog it can help it hide from larger Predators it helps it to and that green color would also help it hide as well so structural adaptations are the way the animal looks what body parts are structures the physical features it has they help with survival there might be Thorns spines or quills feet or claws teeth or a beak maybe a tail could be their fur their camouflage the sounds that they make they might even mimic other animals so our structural adaptations are the physical features of an organism that enable them to survive in their environment penguins have blubber which protect them from freezing temperatures here we can see some structural adaptations with this little hedgehog sharp quills to protect it from predators a protruding snout for eating little termites and sharp claws for digging or burrowing structural adaptations might be things like Teeth body coverings or even the movement of the animal how does the animal get around the way the animal is built so we see a snake here there's some great structural adaptations for the snake its body is built to help it burrow and stay uh be an ambush style Predator they're going to uh use the element of surprise in their hunts here's some structural adaptations for plants let's go ahead and look at some different structural adaptations for plants um these are defense adaptations these spines and Thorns help protect from predators they don't want to be devoured by everything and so these thorns and spines help stop animals from eating them they also have sweet fruits that attract uh other animals to eat them and then uh when the animals eat the fruits they'll poop out the fruits seeds and that can help to grow new plants and some shape some are uh seeds within uh certain plants are even shaped to be caught by the wind like that dandelion so adap ations for reproduction the flowers might have really bright colors that attract animals to them and animals get their pollen on them and when they fly to another flower then the uh plants life cycle continues the book The Wild Things showed off many different adaptations with the different animals horns Crest yellow eyes large nostrils round nose so many different adaptations that could help those monsters survive so our structural adaptations that's the way the animal is built what it looks like their physical features that we can see so a camel's nostrils can close to block the sand they also have feet that are large and flat that makes walking on the sand easier many different adaptations for camels elephants their trunks can shower them owls they have huge eyes that let them see in the in the dark so they're have a totally Silent Flight as well that helps them to hunt uh their necks have a large turning radius which allows them to stay still but look around and look for prey without moving their body and making noise they use silence to help them porcupines have some very important adaptations like their quills that protect them from predators and sharp claws that help them to climb trees they also have really really really amazing teeth that help them with uh chewing and nying kangaroos have some great adaptations um they can carry their joies in their little pouches and they have huge feet that allow them to hop hop hop around so we're talking all about our physical or structural adaptations those are the features that we see in animals and plants those features that we can see that obviously show that they help them to live and survive look at all the fat stored in the camel's back they have very long muscular legs that allow them to walk long distances because they might have to walk very very long distances to find water cheetahs uh they're the only cat that don't have retractable claws uh they don't need retractable claws because of their very very fast speed they rely on their speed so they don't need their claws to be retractable um and they use their long tail to help them balance and they actually use that tail to help them turn as they are running and polar bears they have thick blubber to help them stay warm big furry feet that helps them walk on the snow and their white fur helps act as camouflage all right let's go ahead and get started with our lesson polar bears live in and around the cold Arctic Ocean the polar bear skin is adapted to help animal will survive in cold places which one of these could survive in a cold place well the thorny devil lives in a desert it must be the Eurasian links that fur would help it to survive emerald tree boas live in the forest of South America the tree boas adapted to be camouflage among green leaves which one which one of these animals would be camouflage among the green leaves definitely are green mantis that green coloration would help it and it even has a body that kind of looks like a leaf straw Berry poison frogs have poisonous glands and their brightly colored skin the bright colors serve as a warning sign that to animal to other animals that they are poisonous the strawberry poison frog skin is adapted to W off Predators which animal skin is better adapted for a warning side to worn off predators that would definitely be the crown of thorn sea star that looks like it is intimidating those colors oo all right we'll do one more here hedgehogs have sharp spines covering much of to their skin these spines are called quills the Hedgehog is adapted to hurt an attacking Predator which one of these animal skin is best adapted to hurt an animal predator that's definitely our Blowfish they would be able to hurt a predator that attacked them third graders thank you for taking the time to view this lesson all about the physical and structural adaptations of animals and plants please take the time to practice this skill inl because it helps to show how well you understand the different physical features that uh animals and in some cases plants have but uh specifically inl you'll be working with animals it helps to show the different physical features within animals that will help them to survive in their given environments thank you for viewing this lesson about adaptations thank you for taking the time to show interest and learn about science and as always um remember to have fun learning today please also remember there is a graded assignment that goes with this lesson as well as the adaptations lesson that we worked on yesterday uh thank you so much for viewing this lesson and please take the time to finish that graded assignment thank you third graders [Music]
