livestream that I do as well as a little icon little graphic that shows you exactly what we're going to be doing and a brief description of the challenge I mean if you come over here to current challenge you can browse through all of the other current challenges people have created as well as post your own and there's even a past challenge section here where you can post challenges that you do may be out of order or a little bit later on than the current one that we're doing right now which games are my playing oh you know I'm into the diablo 2 and skyrim a little bit of stardew valley i've been kind of addicted to lately I'm a big gamer big nerd you guys know that though so this this this discord is full of really fantastic designs by the way everyone has been working so hard and doing so many cool icons and fantasy avatars and stuff I'm so proud of you guys I was kind of blown away again when I woke up this morning to see how many cool things you folks add it in here and I can't wait to see what you guys create with me today real quick I'm gonna go over the schedule and then we're gonna jump into what I've got planned for the morning if you guys want to tune in and hang out with us for the day we've got so many cool designers I'm kicking off the day and this morning with the Photoshop daily creative challenge obviously next after me is Sandi and Steve Pell of pelvic ax I'm with some drawing and painting Adobe XD with Peter delt and oh he's doing the XD daily creative challenge after me and then we're gonna have an awesome super jam-packed segment of XD right after we pull that up again because it kind of went black there right after Peter dealt Ando with joshi wada who's doing like a case study of how to create a case study which is super awesome so definitely stick around for the rest of the day it's gonna be pretty rad but without further ado we're gonna jump into our challenge for the morning so as it says on the challenge page we are going to be created are creating a coat of arms or a house crest and I'm actually going to put it on to a flag today because every adventurer needs to raise their banners before they go on a quest right if you guys have ever played video games you know that usually you pick like a cool place to belong to and then you rep those colors with all your might for those of you again who are not really RPG fans you guys can create a coat of arms for yourself maybe for your own family or for a family you admire or just make a cool design and learn how to place it onto some fabric using displacement maps this can be used for creating mock-ups for t-shirts for creating cool maybe handkerchief designs whatever you folks want to do so first off what we're gonna do is we're going to create a house crest because we need something to work with right so I'm going to come up here to file I do have fabric open which we are going to use but I'm going to come up to file and I'm gonna say new and then I'm going to make a 3,000 by 3,000 pixel blank thing here and I'm gonna say okay I'm gonna leave the resolution at 300 that's my typical default and 300 dpi is the standard for print and I always make everything just in case I want to print it for whatever reason later so I'm going to say create on that I'm an unlock or background layer and again I do have my key commands and shortcuts displaying up in the top right hand corner so if you folks get lost or you want to see what I'm doing on my keyboard you guys can always glance up there my house crest is a pineapple probably planted on the hefty slice of pizza if we can get a band for Howard Pinsky that would be great welcome in Howard it's good to see you this morning I hope you're doing well all right so first of all I'm going to draw upon some knowledge from our previous lessons this week and I am actually going to pull up the pen tool because I need to make myself a little crest and I'm gonna use a shield shape for that so real quick I'm gonna by hitting p on my keyboard or clicking on my pen tool up here i'm gonna come up here and I'm gonna say shape I'm going to change the color of this shape to like a gold color and I am going to quickly draw out a little let's see I can do it a little shield shape for myself if you don't know how to use the pen tool if you're a little unfamiliar with this you can definitely check out yesterday's challenge to get a little bit more information on that you can also do this any other way that you see fit I just know that this will be quick and easy to do real quick to get us started for the day so that's how I'm going to do mine so I'm going to finish the shape and I'm actually going to hold ctrl and click this point and then hold alt so I can drag this upwards like so and straighten that out and then I'm going to I'm actually going to rasterize this layer and I'm going to grab my marquee tool or you can press M on the keyboard and I'm going to come over here and I'm just going to cut this to make sure that it's a straight line so I'm going to go ctrl C and cut that out then I'm going to go ctrl J to duplicate and ctrl T to transform I'm going to right click I'm going to flip it horizontal and then I'm gonna drag this out so that I have a little shield shape there and then I press ctrl e to merge it so now I have a little shield and I'm gonna call that crest boom I'm gonna ctrl T again so I can Center this on my canvas and then I'm gonna say let's see enter then I'm going to pull up the cemetry tool so I'm gonna hit B on my keyboard to pull up my brush tool and I'm gonna come up here to this little butterfly icon up here I'm gonna click that and I'm gonna say vertical because I want to do a vertical cemetery mirror if you want to do something different that's totally cool you can click on yours I'm gonna hit enter to place this but you can click on yours and you can do all kinds of super awesome mandala effects circle effects however you want to do it but I am gonna use vertical for today because that's what I want I'm gonna grab my stylus to do this but remember yesterday I said if you don't have a stylus and you need to do something with the brush tool you can always come up here and turn on smoothing so that you don't have that jittery jagged kind of stroke when you use your mouse to use the brush tool and you can let's see come over here and you can do things very fluidly very nicely with just your mouse that was with the mouse just now but I'm gonna do ctrl Z and I'm going to hold alt and sample this color I'm gonna make my brush a little bit bigger with the bracket keys if I can here let me see let me grab another you know it's grab like this that's very large very very big also if you can't see the shape and size of your brush you probably have caps locks on if I turn caps lock on I can only see this little point but if my turn cap selects off you can see the shape of your brush so without getting super super detailed I just want to do a quick little crest here so that you guys can get the idea of what we're doing I'm gonna make a new layer that was control shift in and I'm just gonna draw some cool little designs you know just to give this the illusion of having like kind of a cool filigree style little thing going on here and create my crest you guys can get a lot more detailed with this however you like I'm sure you guys are gonna want to put like maybe some cool gems on it for example if I get a little red color here I can come in and add some things that look like rubies in here you could even use the pen tool or the lasso tool and get in here and add even more awesomeness but it's up to you how you want to do this so I'm gonna maybe grab some gold and add just a few more pieces here just to get some some good detail in there and I'm gonna leave mine like that or if you want what you could do because every crust needs kind of a focal point there if you did less yesterday's challenge or if you have a pretty cool icon that you like or you want to search for one online you can grab that and you can drag and drop that right into there I am going to actually hit enter and I actually have let me turn the cemetry off real quick I actually have a white background on here so what I'm gonna do is I am going to select around here and I am going to right click and hit select inverse and I'm gonna do ctrl J and just duplicate that one thing right out of the frame I'm gonna call this ham and then I'm gonna transform and I'm gonna bump this down I'm gonna put that ham right on my credit for my crest because I am ham house apparently voodoo Val of house ham and I'm gonna hit enter and this is pretty cool a quick little crest I'm going to click that background I'm gonna delete that and then I'm going to group all of these together I'm gonna duplicate it and then I'm going to merge it together so I have one shape that does not have a background I'm gonna hide that group and then I'm gonna go control shift save for save as and I am going to save this as crest and I'm going to save it as a in G so that I have that and hit okay all right so now that we have our crest to work with we're going to put this onto a flag and you remember I have the fabric here that we're gonna work with we're gonna create a displacement map for this flag so the first thing you want to do is find an image of some super cool fabric preferably with wrinkles that you can really get the cool displacement effect and detail going I've chosen this you can choose whatever kind of fabric you want you can even take a picture of fabric in your own home and upload that to Photoshop and use that for this project which I would be super interested to see what kind of blankets and things you guys choose of your own to do this that would be super cool and add a neat little personal touch so to create a displacement map this is what you do so first of all I am going to put a Gaussian blur on this because we've got a lot of detail here that we're working with and I want to tone it down just a little so I'm gonna go to filter I'm gonna go to blur and then I'm gonna go to my Gaussian blur and I'm I'm gonna I think I'm gonna leave it here because I just want it cranked up enough that it shows the shadows the values there but not the detail of the weave of the fabric and I'm gonna hit OK and then I'm even gonna go control L so that I can mess with the left the levels and I'm gonna bump these levels and just to make this really dramatic here like so and I'm gonna say okay I'm going to go control shift s for save as and I'm going to save this as this map or displacement map and it needs to be a PSD boom and then I am going to let's see I have my displacement map up I'm gonna go file open and I'm gonna grab that fabric that I had right and then I'm going to drag and drop and my crest like so so that I have this in my file with the fabric not the fabric that's the displacement map just the regular like JPEG or PNG that you use to make the displacement map okay and before I apply a displacement map to this I do want to make this into the shape of a flag because that's the goal here today right so I'm gonna teach you a quick little trick of how to get something like this into the shape that you want it so I'm going to quickly hide the crests too real quick because we're gonna put that aside for now I'm going to unlock this background and I'm going to call it fabric boom and then I'm going to on another layer control shift in I'm gonna grab my marquee tool or press M on your keyboard and I'm gonna drag out just a little rectangle here and I you can either hit G on your keyboard or come over here and click the paint bucket I'm going to grab a red color the color doesn't really matter for this but I just want you to be able to see it and I'm gonna paint bucket in some color there then I'm gonna take my polygonal lasso tool and if you can't find your probably on a lasso tool click the lasso over here right click it and hover over and you will be able to select the polygonal lasso tool and I'm gonna take a chunk out of the corner of this here like so and I'm gonna hit ctrl X so I have half the shape of my flag then just like we made the shield I'm gonna go ctrl J I'm gonna go ctrl T to transform that duplicate flip horizontal and then I'm going to drag this over to make a flag shape and then I'm gonna go control E and bump that down now I can hit ctrl T in order to transform this how I like I'm gonna Center this I'm gonna make it a little bit larger like that and then I'm going to move this which I'm going to retitle flag like so underneath the fabric now here's where it gets super cool I can right click my fabric layer here and I can say create clipping mask boom basically what that does is it tells whatever I create a clipping mask from to adhere to the boundaries of whatever is on the layer right below it so I have that shape and then I make the fabric you know adhere to that shape and now I have a fabric flag shape which is super cool I also want to change the color of this fabric and rather than paint bucketing some color over the top of it and then using blending modes I'm actually going to double click it here to open the layer styles and I'm gonna put a quick color overlay onto it because I want it to be blue and you can come over here and click whatever color you want you can come over here and select any blending mode you want to get the desired color and desired sort of effect but I like this blue and I like hard light so that's what I'm going to leave it on so there we have our little flag now back to the crest and you can also hit this little bracket here to hide those effects and then I'm even going to hold shift and select these two and then whole do control G to group them together and call that flags when all the elements of my flag are right under there now let's unhide our crust I'm going to ctrl T to kind of bump this up and make it exactly where I want it and now we're going to apply the displacement map we made so I'm going to come up here to filter and I'm gonna say distort and then I'm gonna hit displace I'm gonna say okay you can mess with these settings if he wants you but I want the horizontal and vertical scale to stay exactly where is and I don't want it to tile so I'm going to leave it on stretch to fit and I'm gonna say okay and then I'm going to navigate to the displacement map PSD that I found and I'm gonna say okay and then it did warp it a little bit but not quite enough for my liking so I'm gonna keep hitting that displace and keep warping that a little bit let's see let's say don't do filter can I do that again distort displace okay this placement map boom and so it did warp it again you can do this as many times as you like but the problem with this now is that it's distorted according to the levels and values of this flag but you can't it doesn't really look like it's on this fabric so what I'm gonna do is I'm actually going to put it on a color dodge layer because then you can see all of the fabric through it and to make it a little more visible I'm actually going to duplicate the crest with control J I'm going to revert this back to normal and then I'm going to turn the opacity down just a little bit so that I can see the detail I can also see the texture through the fabric and it looks pretty dang cool so that's how you can use this to put like a logo on a t-shirt to create an adventure crest on a flag if you like and a plethora of super cool other things so real quick I'm gonna save this I'm gonna say ctrl shift s I'm going to save this as flag I'm going to make it a PNG and then I'm going to upload this to discord and Behance so if I come over to discord right here I'm going to make sure that I'm in the current challenge page and I am going to scroll all the way down here through all these wonderful magnificent designs you guys have put in here I'm gonna hit this plus button I'm going to navigate to popped my little panel over here on my other monitor but I'm going to navigate to my flag and I'm gonna say okay and I'm gonna say here is my challenge 3 entry boom and there we go pretty awesome right are you gonna shape the flag edges you can I I have limited time today so that is definitely something that I would do if I had more time and I probably like I've been doing is go back and read ray on some of my designs and then put updated versions in the discourse you guys can see how I would take that detail to the next level and I highly recommend that you do as well you know kind of experiment with making it look less like it's fitted into a perfectly shaped frame and more like it really does have those ruffles I'll show you guys some examples in the discord later today but this is just you know the quick and straightforward process for how to make that look like it's applied onto the fabric in general use for t-shirt mock-ups yes indeed thank you so much Coby I'm glad that you're into it morning Val or morning ray sometimes when people say my name is Shaq I read it out loud and then I look like a dum-dum actually I could to see you but yeah so that is how you do that now we've put it into our discord and but we can also navigate over to behance and throw it into beans and let's find this page I'm gonna go over here I'm gonna click peanuts I'm gonna grab my go to my profile head over to the my DCC page which we actually don't want to click into it we want to hover over and get that edit right there and hit edit and then here is my first challenge you guys remember I went back and did another super cool avatar which was a lot of fun I'm gonna got some more icons in the works because I want to do all three of my icons but for now we are gonna come in here and we're gonna say coat of arms flag and then underneath here I'm going to hit insert media I'm going to navigate to my thing here I'm going to click flag and I am going to upload that and bump it in wait for it to load and then at that point I would press save and then I would have that uploaded but you want to remember to when you are uploading these make sure that your behance project actually has the PS daily challenge keyword if you click settings and then go over to discoverability you want to make sure that keyword is in there so that we can find it so that we can say hello to you and comment on your projects and follow you guys and favorite all of your awesome designs so there you have it guys I really appreciate you all being in here with me today I can't wait to see what kind of flags and awesome super cool things you guys create and I will see you in the chat later today and tomorrow morning with an even more epic daily creative challenge so much love guys and I will see you next time [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
