Totally. I was surprised he didn't get an Oscar nod for this film. The scene where he chews out his boss at the beginning just blew me away.
I just realized at the end credits that it's an Aaron Sorkin dealie. Figures. All movie I was thinking, damn, this is almost as well-written as West Wing.
This movie was so good, but I didn't hear anything about it when it was in the theaters. I was just surfing HBO one day and happened upon it. It's one of my favorites now.
Edit: Not to mention... the scene with the belly dancer. Did you know that she is Wade Phillips' daughter?!
I loved that movie too. PSH hit the perfect note of a totally jaded but pragmatic CIA man. I thought Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks worked great together.
His versatility as an actor is formidable. His role as Truman Capote is astounding.
Actors like PSH are my favorite kind. There are great actors that are bigger than the roles they play. Brando, Hackman, Nicholson etc. The problem is they overshadow the role. Actors like Hoffman disappear into the role and literally embody it. I forget I'm watching an actor. All I see is a jaded CIA spy.
That scene in the director's office is right up there IMO with Alec Baldwin's scene in Glengarry Glen Ross
I just finished the book the movie was based on, it made me respect PSH's performance even more. He absolutely NAILED the guy's attitude and mannerisms, not to mention looking almost exactly like the guy.
Oh, and I totally recommend the book to any fans of the movie. There's a ton more interesting detail, both Gust and Charlie were incredibly cool people.
Julia Roberts is good in this too. The scene where she's war nerding about "Dashukas" and "look down shoot down radar" while doing her eyelashes really captures Joanne Herring's character. And Hanks is excellent as usual.
