Peter Jackson and Adam Savage Open John Chambers' CIA Make-Up Kit!

earlier this year I visited my friend Peter Jackson in his cave his world-class collection of props costumes and cinema artifacts that inspired him as a young filmmaker and continued to inspire him during this visit Peter showed me something right out of a Hollywood movie but not made for a movie Hollywood makeup artist John Chambers CIA makeup kit supposedly used to help the CIA disguise its agents this is what I wanted to see last time we were here when I hold this out you've told me what talk about what this is well this is a the exceed of you have to have a special technique this is a CIA kit it's it's it's designed by John Chambers the makeup artist who was ultimately played by John Goodman in Argo and he provided the despised real spies he provided them a makeup disguise kit like the John and it's like was top secret no one even knew that it existed because they never would admit that he did know this you know little did alone produce these things and VII so it's got I mean it hasn't got all the bits and pieces but it's got you know I think I think it used to have some Priscilla cats and things but you do get things like sideburns oh my god you know just try and try them out you wish you can actually hold it these are on nettings almost mesh your coloring yeah yeah and it would come with glues I mean this I don't think there's original glues hit anymore but there's like bottles he's coming back and there's obviously there's there's two different makeup powders and battery power and different there's brushes and is yeah better battery-powered mirror in case your your Russian hotel doesn't have have decent electricity so he can look like a businessman walking in with a briefcase well that's what I I just I can't imagine these things being used because it's like literally I guess the idea is you're in some foreign country like look like a sort of behind the Iron Curtain yeah you know and you're worried that this that the KGB might be on your tail so you've got this bit this case which looks like a businessman case yeah you walk in somewhere it doesn't even be a hotel you just walk into a building looking like you you quickly pull out walk and you change and they and and there was there was there was actually there used to be some priscilla pieces in the original so you could actually do chins and noses and everything else - it wasn't just you know here what does any and you quickly you quickly put it on and and and then and then a few minutes later or how fast you are a different person walks out and they race the KGB agents look at unknown I know it isn't him and they just sit there waiting for you to arrive and you're you're long gone it's like it's just crazy its industries and you have this right so this is the thing with I'm totally incredible latex overhead mass so it's the oil stamped yep these were I guess some of his choices I guess this is the catalog a little bit like the Mission Impossible isn't it when you hardly Mission away you decide who you want who you want to take so it's like you're going somewhere and maybe you pre-ordered these you know you wanted like a half dozen of them or something depending on what country you are in you know depending on what you might want to use them for Oriental Caucasian because these these are like so rubber masks or something really some of them must have been slip on slip all masks all foam legal foam latex mask or something yeah oriental Caucasian yeah okay I mean this is so much Billy why don't you wonder how many people used it I I wonder if any records exists anywhere or anyone prepared to say if it ever got actually used by agents I mean this is the best is it is the confirmation that Mission Impossible is actually based on some type of reality and it's also the confirmation because before I go I mean I you know a lot of friends and Los Angeles and make up friends would whispered to me John John Chambers you said used to do top-secret CIA CIA work I mean I go blew it all out in the open but it's like I I was just never really understand it but then a penny I mean this is like a manufactured thing it's not a one-off so I think these I'm under how many were made I don't know yeah it's so much I don't know one is so much for you that's all CIA you might never find out that I love to I love to it you'd love to find someone that you could talk to today an old retired agent who used one of these back in the 60s and you know who actually got to use one of these and to hear his experiences they would be cool well it's awesome it would be hairy right like a poker player who uses some sort of load is you is terrified because if they're going to get caught with their device this is evidence this is a terrifying thing to be trying to walk around with and also you what you've got on your face is not going to withstand great scrutiny now I mean a massage might or something else but if it's like yoga so no it's not going to restate you've just got a you can't speak maybe glasses are going to help you've got a you cuz you should try and you should try and hunt down some retired old CIA guy and see if you find someone that actually you had put his personal you use of this could it be fascinating well maybe maybe releasing this video yeah we'll bring everybody out of the woodwork yeah and give us some more than that right yes so if you ever use one of these in your youth in your profession please let just contact element of it would be I'll put a mask on but make you up in a hotel it will extract you and you can get to safety I've got Jamie's original movie makeup but box here too it's actually kind of cool because that's got a lot of the it's got a lot of the the original stuff in it they know it's like it's almost like he just shut the lid and walked walked away well so this is Chun that's his original members yeah this is his original makeup fun Oh movie makeup kid and it's all this is all the stuff that was you know that like whenever the last day was that he did makeup this is what was in it on the last day so he would have used this to makeup Roddy McDowall he would use this to mmmm amazing yeah you'll not seen better days it might be some little silly are intended little bits of here we don't know I haven't really I love these actually got chambers chambers on there yeah but he could do that on the movie one yes couldn't do it on the CIA one John Chambers three personal makeup cases yeah oh that must be those those oh right okay and then this was a this was a third he was a man who didn't um just stop at one makeup kit that's it that's a bit less coffee just like the stick that down hell yeah you go John Chambers makeup artist Hollywood California this is a dress is that for rubbing for cleaning is it so like swimmer eat like a version of a sort of emery board yeah or here for Harry's Gutzon is in here for maybe making the hair appliances right oh I see okay oh that might the guy that Tam did these may I picked us out yeah because these are unused apes ones so these are original as they were wow it looks so much smaller than I feel like it would look like in my mind's eye these are more prominent no but it doesn't take much look at that insan a vacuform shell mmm doctors it's doctors that's doctors in three servings yeah this is um you know the Cornelius character Roddy McDowall yeah yeah which is obviously he's a famous but this is this is the original mold that gem is used for the appliance for the AVM of the appliance oh right this is a two-part mold you're running the FL dome yeah so you could we could we could run yeah we could run off some already running it down Pacific's some of the stuff even at this age yeah you actually can crack a crack and break at some you know you have to that's why you very careful there like that one is getting a little bit a little bit solid yeah these are very bit um well you're keeping them out of the Sun yes the yeah and we're keeping them not an oven you know not not being touched or anything ultraviolet that's yet impressive that feels like it was made yesterday
