[Applause] to earn a foolish trophy and a trip to vegas you gotta fool the masters of magic let's meet tonight's first performer my name is abby siegel and i'm 19 years old but as a kid i never really wanted to tell anyone that i did magic like for the fun facts at school it would never be a magician it was always something else like i played tennis or something like that i would go out to different towns and do shows at different schools and i didn't really want to ever do it in my own school because i just didn't really want people knowing there that i did it but sometimes i would be at school and i would do magic with my pen just to see if anyone around me would notice but no one noticed i don't know why so now that i'm in college i decided to share my magic because i realized how happy it made people feel so penn teller i guess the secret's out i am a magician but i still have a few magic secrets i'm keeping to myself [Music] along with pen and teller please welcome the playful magic of abby sigel thank you both so much for having me here today such an honor to be performing on your show as a kid i found magic hidden in just about anything i laid my eyes on my earliest experience of magic was in this toy that sat high on a shelf my grandfather's basement the toy was the etch-a-sketch the edge of schedules like a trick to me the way you can make any image appear just by turning the knobs and then it would disappear the shake of the screen i made this image appear of the two of you not by magic it took me three hours in my dorm room 10 i really underestimated the amount of time it would take to draw your goatee yeah but for my first trick you know i think this makes me the first person to make youtube disappear on your own show does it there is real magic in the edge sketch though and we're going to find it but for now i want you two to think back to some of your favorite childhood toys to jog your memory i brought some cards a beach ball a toy boat a teddy bear i'm sure some of these are ringing a bell pen i want you to reconnect with one of these toys it says i go through the cards like this just stop me whenever you'd like okay all right it's top right here yeah you have this card yeah all right and i want you to get a peek at this toy do you have it hold that image in your head i will tell her we'll do that same thing i'll go through the cards and stop me in the non-verbal manner of your choosing that was a great choice this one right here i can get a peek at that toy do you have the image in your head all right and i'll set that down over by you pen focus on the toy you're thinking of outline its shape in your mind i want you to keep concentrating on that toy but think back to a memory you've had with it think back to when you played with this toy maybe you played with it as a toddler or maybe you were just a baby or maybe it was yesterday it wasn't yesterday was it it was not no oh okay so we've confirmed that this memory was not yesterday but i'm getting a sense that this feels like it was just yesterday yeah is that right that's great well penn i want to see what toy you selected so if you wouldn't mind i'm gonna flip over the card see that we have picked the talking telephone that was the toy you had in mind the talking telephone thank you you know i never thought my las vegas debut would be playing with an etch-a-sketch so thank you penn for this memory but you know what they say what happens in vegas but it's okay because we're not actually erasing our work we're only making room for new memories to be made so with this in mind tell her i'm going to shake the edge sketch back and forth like this and while i shake it i want you to think of that toy that you chose picture yourself playing with it yep imagine that all those simple lines and shapes that you make with an edge sketch are coming together to form that image of the toy that's good i'm going to set it down just like this i'm going to flip over the card to show that you have selected the red wagon you know i think the edge of sketch may just have one more trick up its sleeve the red wagon and thank you both so much for helping me out wow that is so impressive thank you so there's no other trick like this in the world is that right yeah well i came up with the trick my junior year of high school it was like a proposal i made to myself i was like i want to work on one trick and invent this trick and put it on penn tiller so i worked in it my entire junior year a little bit every day so what are your magic plans would love to have my own show eventually i'm working on a parlor show right now so i would love to get that out and i'm doing psychology and visual art in college so i want to incorporate those with magic in some way just live a creative and magical life awesome are you creating more tricks like in your mind right now yes i'm always creating new tricks like i'll go to the store and i'll see a toothbrush and i don't just think of it as a toothbrush i think of ways i can make magic tricks with it so i'm not very fun to shop with no i think you'd be awesome to shop with i love that abby shall we see if you can add a foolish trophy to your toy collection yes penn tell her boy abby we love the act this is your original trick right yes oh wow uh just so nice to see someone who's young with really new fresh ideas and also as a juggler i always love when there's a real raw skill looking like ross gill you did that portrait of us on the edge of sketch friend of mine a wonderful artist named renee french she did a portrait of me on an etch-a-sketch and worked on it a really long time it's really beautiful so i know you really did spend three hours is probably no exaggeration whatsoever and also we think that you did the telephone there incredibly fast really right there in front of us for reals and that was amazing too so i like that and that also comes into um having us uh choose a toy we had a combination of a interesting prop and then also some some real slight of hand skill you had a very gentle and playful but still forceful way to have us have us choose the card that was really really great we did notice and i don't think many other people would that the choice of the wagon and the shape of the wagon uh helps very much in making that trick happen it allows you a little bit of shade there where you need it so we know it was a wonderful routine and your style is so humble and sweet still confident uh but we think we followed the trick uh all the way through and i hope i've given you a little bit of a hint that we've uh figured it out here and there abby did they figure it out you guys got it thank you thank you that was wonderful well you didn't fool him but you certainly entertained us thank you so much abby seagulls don't stick a fork in us just yet we still have magic a cut above the rest when fullest [Applause] returns you
