hi DF team exclamation point I'm looking to get a new monitor but having trouble deciding between 1440p and 4K while 4K does have that extra image Clarity it comes at a hefty performance cost do you think that it is worth it I'm not going to get a 4090 so I can't just brute force it I think the thing that's missing here Alex is what the you know what the GPU actually is that that he's got yeah that's what I was curious about I was thinking something like 40 70ish based upon the description possibly I mean just but I honestly do think if you're going to Target um a monitor in the PC space I actually do think 1440p is wonderful um yeah I would actually highly advise to do it instead of 4K for pretty much almost anyone um even users with a 49 could maybe try out 1440p one day and like it uh so I would say having GPU performance left on the table Yeah but you never know those nextg path racing games you never know um but yeah uh I think in this case you would uh do really well to Target 1440p uh the monitor would be cheaper than usually too uh the you could and if you still want you could maybe look at the new OLED 1440p monitors uh and if you have a if you are targeting like some higher end G GPU that isn't a 4090 but like say you wanted like 7900 XTX or XT or the new gr or you wanted a 4070 70 super 4070 TI super um then you could also be really interested in like a higher refresh rate version of 1440p up to 240 htz or so and then you could really use that dss3 to get up there in a surprising amount of games at 1440p while using dlss um so I think there's a lot I think there's a lot more versatility if you go to 1440p yeah I agree um I guess the other thing of course is the size of the monitor as well what what kind of size of monitor are you considering um because you know 27 in monitors seem to be the the standard if you like the most popular size and uh 4K for that size monitor in fact I'm looking at one right now I mean I'm always running everything at like 125% cuz it's the big density is just is just too high um so yeah 1440p with a high refresh rate I would take at that size over for over 4K for sure do you have any any particular thoughts on this Oliver what monitor do you use typically right now I'm looking at a 27in 5k Apple Studio display so that's four times the only pixels that are in 1440p so may I'm not the ideal person to have but I think in general just for gaming applications in Windows Windows 1440p is a good resolution for PC gaming but I I do I would provide the caveat that I think 4K displays can be serviced by a pretty wide range of gpus if you're willing to lower frame rate if you're willing to engage upscaling techniques and even by linear scaling from 1440p to 4K can look okay depending on viewing distance and how you know how how sensitive you are to image sharpness but everything else being equal I would think that 1440p would be a better Target for mid-range builds because it's a more reason reasonable resolution Target for high-end games especially like that leading tier of like Avatar alen wake 2 You Know hellblade M will be up there games that are coming out have come out or coming out in the future that are really pushing advanced technology I don't want to be at 1440p with a mid-range GP personally depends on the game I guess but yeah they think obviously the requirements are rising there's a bit of a wakeup call with Alam wake um yeah but yeah that does seem to be the sweet spot at the moment I think the other thing about 1440p which is you know uh possibly going slightly against what you were saying there Oliver is it does seem to actually be quite an adaptable resolution in terms of gpus that you can deploy on it certainly if you're factoring in dlss and the quality level is there for you um because you know like a 4060 and a 3060 um 1440p with like dlss quality mode looks all right actually I like it a lot of people disagree I don't know why I I think dlss quality mode at 440p looks great I think it's more like if you go down to that like performance mode that you start just noticing it especially in the resolve yeah I like quality mode at 440p
