Pastor Tim Dilena - GOAT | When I Don't Understand, Go Back To The Beginning

[Applause] you can be death you're the goat I'll tell you that greatest of all time that's our series we're so happy to have you here all those live on our webcasts welcome and what a joy to be with you it is the greatest of all times what we're talking about you know when we my kids and I will discuss we are now just past the level of watching every movie that has been animated we've kind of now we get to see real humans living on the screen which has been not that way for a long time but if you you can even ask my kids because I tell them all the time if you were to ask me the goat of all movies the goat I hands-down for me it's always the sound of music it is to me thank you one person one lonely person back that's going every else is going really are you serious that's why we should have went to midtown so what happens is that so I just love it the songs are iconic I love the storyline Austria the scene it's amazing and my mind goes back to that famous iconic song as Maria Julie Andrews brings the children the Von Trapp children on the side of the Austrian mountains and finally as she's about to teach them saw this incredible song it goes like this let's start at the very beginning a very good place to start when you read you begin with ABC and when you sing you start with doremi and so I want to take a page from Maria from Julie Andrews and I want to start at the beginning today I mean not just the beginning the beginning beginning I'm going to bring you all the way back to the very beginning and there's a real reason there's a real important reason for this and so in order to start there we've got I've got to establish a couple of things that I that I think are really important and you need I need you to buckle in for me because we're gonna we're gonna dig a little bit deep and then we're gonna show how appropriate this is for what we're faced with now no matter who you are what season you are in your life so I want you to jot some things down but I just you don't have do but I want you to think about this I want to put up there it's gonna be kind of funny for for false facts these are not true so I want you just you don't have to write them down just bear with me there is a reason for these for false facts fact number one books write themselves without the need of an author books write themselves without the need to burn off that's a false fact number one false fact number two cars build themselves without the need of a manufacturer fact number three of that's false music composes itself into beautiful harmonies without the need of a composer and it's the fourth one that we literally pay millions of dollars to be taught to our children on every level of education we know one through three is messed up and for some reason we don't we don't consider this one listened to it fact number four the whole universe came into being through the process of random chance and beneficial mutations without any need of a designer let me tell you what this means this is the fight and the battle between the Big Bang and a big God and I have to tell you I believe in a big God I want you to understand that today because when we're dealing with this issue we're really dealing with what our children face every single day all the way up to higher education which is I want to call it the battle of creation versus evolution but it really isn't a battle anymore evolution in in our society is the predominant idea let's just be honest let's not let's let's speak but let's not keep our head in the sand on this and here's the here is the danger of this when you lose creation you lose sight of God you lose God that's part of our psyche even though the Bible tells us that that every one of us have have a inside of us Romans chapter 1 this thought of God and this and this this desire for God yet we live in a society that's trying to remove that and strip that from us and it's more than just a worldview battle it really becomes the loss of a powerful weapon that I want to show you of why going back to the beginning becomes a weapon for us because this is where I want you to know when you don't understand what's happening now in your life I'm gonna give you a challenge to go back to the beginning today when you're faced with a difficulty I'm gonna challenge you to go back to the very beginning the real beginning because it's really at that point if you can create heaven and earth if you can create people there's no doubt about it you to go at that point you are the greatest of all time so I want to start there for just a few moments and I want to I want to go through a little bit of this because this is what's amazing to me think about this it's incredible what an unbeliever must believe to be an unbeliever let me say that again it's incredible to me dr. Duane Gish said this it's incredible what an unbeliever must believe to be an unbeliever it goes something like this say you and your family are walking through the Black Hills of South Dakota and all of a sudden as you're going through the forest and you're seeing the water and you're seeing some of the most incredible sights of this Grand National Park and then you come across this gorgeous mountain and you're looking at going oh my goodness look what time and wind and erosion has formed the perfection of the of the detail in the side of a mountain it looks like a nose and eyeballs and in fact that looks like Washington and that looks like Jefferson and that looks like Lincoln and that looks like Roosevelt we would call it Mount Rushmore and if we would think to ourselves is this form by time erosion wind and water of course not John Borglum the the architect of this took 14 years starting all the way back in the 1930s and began to remove hundreds of thousands of metric tons of stone and blasting to put in direct proportion I ball that are that are literally 15 feet across noses that are 20 and 30 feet long and to put these precise dimensions on this how can this simply be just erode and why would we think of anything more complex like our universe and like our human bodies that that just came by chance it was CS Lewis that said it this way we may ignore but we can't escape the presence of God the world is crowded with God's he's everywhere and what we call this in in this important piece I need you to get this is we would call this intelligent design or a fine-tuning Theory this is this is where we live in a society another another goat movie would be The Wizard of Oz is finally Toto removes the curtain and there's this little man called the wizard who has all these knobs and levers and he's sitting there yelling at everybody going don't pay attention to the man behind the screen and that's what our society is doing don't pay attention to the big finger prints that are all over your lives and this planet and it's called God it's his fingerprints it's his fingerprints and so I want you to pay attention to this it may because to bring something out of nothing is impossible one of my favorite authors said one of my favorite things about this whole process and it was GK Chesterton who said this it's absurd for the evolutionists to complain about us that it's unthinkable of to admittedly an unthinkable god to make everything out of nothing and then pretend that it is more thinkable for nothing to turn itself into everything how ridiculous is that or Voltaire wasn't off when he said if a watch proves the existence of a watchmaker and the existence of a universe doesn't produce doesn't prove the existence of a great architect that I then I consent to be a fool how ridiculous is that when you when you think how about how people are saying and they're trying to ignore that the fingerprints of God are upon this I'm having to remember being in those science classes in high school and you saw the chart of the monkeys growing all the way up into a human remember it remember those charts my favorite twist on that is is this one it goes like this from the monkey all the way up and find the mango stop following me another one says we're not related or or it goes back to the story of them of the young girl going to her mom saying mom where do we come from and the mom just goes we come from God God created us she was well I'm confused just cuz dad said we come from monkeys he said mom said they're both true he's just telling you where his roots are from and I'm telling you where I'm from [Applause] what's amazing is when you're dealing with the design theory the fine-tuning what you're saying is that if there is a design there is a designer that's what we're talking about fine-tuning means someone has their hands on the knobs it doesn't just happen even science itself one of the last articles I read said 60s there has to be 60 precise measurements that happen in order for life to exist even on our planet there's 60 things that have to be fine-tuned if our earth was just a fraction closer to the Sun we would all burn up if it was a fraction further we would all freeze if the moon was any further from the earth than it is the waters would begin to cover the continents if the access of our planet changed we would lose the the balance of degrees that we have on our planet which goes from negative 30 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and if that axis changed you would begin to see that life is uninhabitable on our planet and it just tells us that there is somebody that's turning the knobs that's making sure we can be here and this place was may fit for life in fact one of the most amazing things I read if you talk about the goat of all evolutionists and atheists this man was the goat graduate of Cambridge and was one of the great great atheist writers especially trying to debunk Christianity and that there is a designer because if we're saying if there's a design there has to be a designer who fine-tuned this whose fingerprints are on that and that's why we believe that there is a big God that was able to do this but one of the goats greatest of all time to the atheist was a man named Anthony flue Anthoni flu has written over 50 books 50 books to try to debunk this and to come against and really disprove Christianity that no God exists and here's what's crazy 50 books later 80 years old he just died a few years ago I want you to know I read his last book book number 51 I read book and this is what Anthony flu came to because of the fine-tuning intelligent design because he goes all the evidence leads that somebody's turning the knobs his last book he ever wrote before he died at 80 years old look at it it's called there is a God how the world's most notorious atheist changed his mind because he found out that the evidence that somebody has to be there turning the knobs this isn't by accident that's why it's so amazing to me that when you do face death it's funny how people do think of God isn't it true that if you're if you're about to enter an attorney going like maybe I should rethink this through hey I had somebody send me the story of of an atheist man that was walking through one of the great national parks and as he was walking he was just admiring what evolution has done and finally as he was walking through he heard the snapping of sticks behind him and then when he looked behind him he saw a seven-foot grizzly bear starting to chase after him he ran as fast as he can and he says at one point he trips over a log and he just falls to the ground the bear comes over him and is about to take him out and at that point he prays he goes god I know this is gonna sound hypocritical for me calling upon you but I need one request and the voice came out of heaven says what is it and he says I know for me to become a Christian is really hypocritical can you at least make the bear a Christian and at that point the bear took its paws and put them together and said Lord I pray for this meal that I'm about to eat right now prayer answer that's not a true story if you're thinking today but isn't it funny that when we're desperate or at the end of our life we do come to God we do think that way when I talk with people that struggle with this I want you to think about this for just a moment because really the struggle between creation and evolution is really not a science issue it really is a moral issue it's really a worldview issue it's really an issue of fighting to be sovereign yourself because here's what I've always come down to I've listed these three things down just pulled them right out of my journal which just simply says this if I believe in creation then I have to believe I have a maker if I believe in creation I have to believe it's someone manufactured someone made me number two if I have a maker then I have an owner if I have a maker then I'm not in charge someone else higher than me and you ready for this if I have an owner then I'm accountable then I'm accountable for my actions my life and what the maker is done for me see that's why we want to dismiss God not because it's been scientists a scientifically proven that evolution is is is a better is a more reasonable choice that's not the issue we choose that because we get to be sovereign if God doesn't exist we get to make the rules let me say that again don't miss what I just said if we if God doesn't exist then you make the rules or it's like Solomon said listen to this verse in proverbs chapter 30 verse 1 the skeptics war there is no God no God and then he says this I can do anything I want the result of atheism the result of God not existing is your sovereign you decide what's right and wrong you're the one who decides what I can do at this point that's why we have to go back to the beginning and why this is so key and so important and that's why I want to bring yours because I believe with what we face today and this is what I want to finish with what we face today in our personal lives really calls us to go back to the beginning pastor Tim help me with that for just you mean few minutes let me tell you why this is important whenever I'm thinking of you and us coming together on Sundays and I'm Cindy and I are so honored to be here and to be part of this every time we come here I'm always thinking of this and every message so what so so we talk about this so wat how does this apply how does this apply for someone who works in the oil field how does this apply for a housewife how does this apply for a student at LSU or you how does this apply for someone in in high school how does this apply what's the so what of this okay I want to give it to you today because I think it's important we're meant our series is called the goat I told you I learned that word a month ago in Mexico City and I thought I had like the word like go greatest of all time for those that still don't get it that's what it is that's why when you talk about the go Mohammed Ali or LeBron or Michael Jordan whoever you want to put up there it's the greatest of all time well I learned a nutmeg mine and my kids begged me they said stop saying goat it's two years old you are not hip they'd always they always tell me that I'm not hip so but but I learned something they didn't even know this week I even surpassed them I am hip I just want you to know this I found out a word that I didn't even got it from American Idol don't watch it but heard it and it means they said if you can really sing you're a wig WI G it means you sing so good that your hair flies off so I just want us and some of you look like that that they did good today that I'm just looking at your heads grant your wig but but let me just say this let me just say this if there's anybody wig it's God himself and so I want to walk you through this for a second because that though greatest of all time doesn't exist in the Bible there is a goat term in the Bible and it's basically this it goes like this there is no one like you or there's no one else like you those are the goat terms of the Bible that means when the Bible says that there's no one like you're there's no one else that even compares to you it is the I bow to say you're the greatest of all time God you wig is what he's saying so I want to take you and close with Isaiah chapter 45 I came across something as I've been praying about our goat series and wanting to say how does this apply how does this apply so what how does this apply because I believe that what we face now that if we're stuck now I'm telling you to go back to the beginning literally can bring freedom for you today to go back to the beginning the ABCs the doremi the Genesis 1:1 positive help me with that how does that happen well I want to take you to a section of Scripture and Isaiah 44 where there is a group of people that face some things that probably even we face today and I've discovered something that every time that they got to a hurdle that literally God reminded them not only am I the goat but he brought them always back to creation he said I created heaven and earth I created so when they face the hurdle they went backwards to the beginning that's why when you remove creation you remove a weapon when you remove creation you remove fighting words when you don't believe that God created heaven and earth you remove something on helps you to fight hurdles and things you're going through presently let me read to you a little bit of isaiah 45 because there's there's something here that i'm just telling you it's amazing on how appropriate is for our lives i know it is from my life isaiah 45 verse 5 says i'm God the only God there is beside me there are no real gods I'm the one who armed you for this work though you don't even know me now stop there for just the second verse 5 is important because what he says that you person and I'm gonna come back to him in just a second the you he's talking about goes all the way back to verse 1 you could check it out yourself his name Cyrus and what they were talking about was he God was going you have a political leader you have a king who doesn't even know God but he says but I'm the one in control of this okay stay with me now because some of you going like I think I'm tracking not yet hold on and then verse 6 he goes so that everyone from east to west will know that I have no God rivals I am God the only God there is how many no that's some good goat talk right there that's greatest of all time talk then verse seven here comes creation talk I formed light and created darkness I made harmonies and created this course I God do all these things open up heavens and rain clouds pour out buckets of my goodness loosen up earth and bloom salvation sprout right living I God generate all this and then he switches a little bit another hurdle but doom to you who fight your maker you're a pot at odds with the Potter does the clay talk back to the Potter and the clay says what are you doing what clumsy fingers thus God the Holy One of Israel the your maker says this do you question who or what I'm making are you telling me what I can and cannot do here is a creation talk I made earth I created man and woman to live on it I handcrafted the skies and directed all the constellations in their turning skip down with me to verse 18 and let me just finish with his last couple verses but God here's more creation talk this is fine-tuning creator of the universe he is remember God maker of the earth he put it on his foundations built it from scratch he didn't go all to all that trouble just to leave it empty and nothing in it he made it to be lived in this God says I am God the one and only I don't just talk to myself or mumble under my breath I never told Jacob seek me an emptiness in dark openings I am God I work out in the open saying what's right and setting things right final verse so gather around come on in all you refuge refugees and castoffs they don't even know much do they and listen to this last part those who carry around their no God blocks of wood praying for help to a dead stick that's important because he goes you walk around with your little magic charms thinking they're gonna fix you he goes they're not even a rival to the Living God himself now bear with me now everybody got this fear three times in Isaiah 45 Isaiah refers back to creation to help them with their present struggles three times he says you're battling this remember God created the heavens in the earth you're battling this remember God created the heavens in the earth there's no one like him he created heavens and he does it three times I didn't see it in any other chapter of the Bible he goes to goat talk and creation talk at the same time keep that in mind goat and creation talk right at the same time so let me tell you and let drop these three things down because I want to tell you the three hurdles that they face that I think are very important even for my own life in our lives together so here's what I realized from verses 1 through 7 when you are frustrated you got to go back to the beginning what do you mean frustrated you know what they were frustrated with listen close they were frustrated with who got put into office and is in charge of their country does that sound familiar I have never seen a country mortise more divided than when Obama becomes president twice when Trump becomes president when Hillary doesn't make it Trump and everybody's going like I can't believe this I mean Hillary or Trump I can what's gonna happen can I just have who hairs can I just help you with that who really cares because what the vibe and some of us we're going like no I can't believe it's not gonna listen to me God is in charge God is the one and that's what he was telling them he goes you're so worried about Cyrus we got Cyrus and God goes I put him there I control him can I just tell you something ready for this and I got I got uh sure's and security here and I'm gonna say this and I want you to listen close God put Obama in office God put Trump in office because God is on the throne you don't even have to clap I'll call for myself sitting there going like I can't believe Trump God put him there I can't believe Obama God put him there twice take that because they're not in charge me there is a Supreme Court God is interested some of you going why are you yelling I don't know stop with this stuff like I can't believe what's happening we've got to get another present like God's in charge when you're frustrated God made heaven and earth ready for this thank you when you're confused when you're confused what were they confused about they kept going what are you doing he said it's the pot talking to the Potter it's the clay going I don't get this I don't understand I can't believe what's going on here what are you doing with my life this is all out of whack I can't beliee and here's what the writer goes remember when you're in struggle and you're confused remember the one who's fine-tuning the universe I think the one that keeps the planets in line the one that keeps the stars in place the one that makes the Sun Rise every single morning can fine-tune your life even here in Lafayette Louisiana I really think he can when you are confronted God made heaven and earth when you are confused God made heaven and earth and number three when yeah out of options God made heaven and earth what do you mean out of options you know what he said some of you are so dumb you're rubbing rabbit's feet you're having things around your neck this is gonna help me I'm gonna do and this is gonna help me and I do have to say this three times and all of a sudden and hop on one leg and you can do all of that stuff and listen just about a week or two before I came down and moved from New York City here I got off out of my F train um that took me from Brooklyn to Queens where we lived got out walking down 71st Street and I saw a ladder against one of the delis and that ladder there was a guy climbing up it and it was changing something cleanly I can't even remember I watched a dozen people come to that ladder and go and walk right around it because they thought if I go underneath it it's what guess what I did a lottery isn't gonna fix my day find a penny pick it up all the day I got good luck it's not good luck it's a good god that takes me every single day of my life walk under every ladder you can throw out your rabbit's foot you can get rid of all that it's God that's on the throne it's God that takes us to where we need to be it's God himself and nobody else my goodness now you're so cynical like we're gonna make I'm gonna hey instead of trusting your money to a casino trust it over to God and how about tithing oh no he didn't yes I did when you're frustrated God made heaven and earth when you're confused God made heaven and earth and when you're out of options God made heaven and earth hallelujah so let me close with this the smartest man on the planet died Wednesday 76 years old Steven Hawkings considered to be the he was the one that wrote the book theory of everything he felt like he can define everything live 276 had Lou Gehrig's disease ALS they thought he would only live to his 20s lived through 76 years old finally died on Wednesday and I know in the world's view he was the smartest man the Bible says the fool has said there is no God which means I can have my BA I can have my MBA I can have my PhD and still be D um B The Fool says there is no God let me read to you what Stephen Hawkings wrote who didn't come to the right conclusion like Anthony fluids listen to these words when people ask me if a God created the universe I tell them that the question itself makes no sense this is a smartest man on the planet time didn't exist before the Big Bang so there is no time for God to make the universe in we are each free to believe what we want and it's my view that the simplest explanation is thank you Stephen Hawking's there is no God no one created our universe no one directs our faith this leads me to a profound realization there is probably no heaven and there is no afterlife either so Stephen Stephen Hawking said that's what Stephen Hawking said okay look at me for a second I want you to get this Stephen Hawking's became a believer one second after he died because now he's looking at face to face to the goat the greatest of all time see my don't don't make a mistake listen listen webcast listen live people listen I didn't say he went to heaven I just said he's a believer now God exists I could see him with this lot going like um I didn't write that because now he's looking face to face of the greatest of all time he was a believer you ready for this he was a too late believer let me say that again he was a too late believer he became a believer after he died that doesn't get you to heaven doesn't get you never you you don't go to heaven by death you go to heaven by a relationship with God some people think heaven comes when I die it's not true God told us that in order for you to live with in heaven we have to deal with a sin issue well pastor Tim how does this work okay I wonder I want to explain to you this way I want to put two verses on the screen and show you how much you mean to God I want to show you a psalm verse and an Isaiah verse back to back let's put them up I want to show you this look at these two verses nope yes that's it I'm sorry okay Bible calls creation in Psalm 8:3 the work of your fingers and in Isaiah 59 16 his arm brought salvation okay look at me for a moment let me explain this that means when God created heaven and earth and us he just needed his fingers there's Jupiter there's mercury let's put little Pluto out here a little Pluto you're not going to be a planet we happy with insecurity and so we're gonna have to deal with all this stuff and we're gonna have to go through all these things and God goes I just make it he says but when I had to deal with salvation I didn't use these I had to use my arms what does that mean you ready for this listen it takes more work to redeem man than it does to create heaven and earth God said this creation just needed his fingers but salvation needed his arms he said for me to put a planet there this for me to get a hold of a stubborn rebellious I'm not moving person God goes that's ok I'll go from this and I'm gonna move you that's how much he cares about us he goes I went from this to this I went from this is easy this is going to not only take work listen it's gonna take my son to come and die on the cross for them that's how much you matter to God you matter to God because he could have just go really I made all this and you're not gonna believe and he goes and he didn't stop there he didn't stop going like if you don't believe based on creation then you got issues he goes I'm gonna show you not only that I exist watch this this is important he says I'm gonna show you what these I exist fine-tuning intelligent design ok this is fine-tuning intelligence on he says but I'm gonna show you what this I love you this shows you I exist this shows you what I think about you God loves you today but it is so here's what I want you to know he didn't just create a universe he created you and he wants you to live with him forever I don't want you to believe in him too late every one of you are going to be a believer one day some too late some right now in fact look at me I didn't say this in any of the other services I'm gonna say it in this service I didn't read the rest of the chapter but if you read the rest of the chapter there is a philippians verse there's a verse in philippians that comes out of isaiah 45 you know what the verse is he goes one day every tongue is gonna confess and every how many were heard that every knee will bow everything that comes from isaiah 45 that's how it ends it ends with one day you're gonna see my salvation and you're gonna say every knee shall bow and every he what he was saying was you're gonna tell him who he is either on your own or after you die let me just tell you when you die everyone's a believer you won't have you won't have the liberty to be an unbeliever because you're gonna see him face to face and go that is the go but I want you to believe in him now I want you to start a journey with God now pastor Tim how do I do that how do I know that when I do die I'll go to heaven cuz we don't know when we're gonna die we don't know when that day comes Stephen Hawkings didn't know when it is and neither did Anthony flu but I want you to know now I want you to walk in a relationship with me with God now take that first step of knowing God how does that happen pastor Tim Jesus calls it this you must you must be born again he never said you must go to church you must be Catholic you must be Protestant you must be water baptized he didn't say any of that he said you have to be born again all those other things are peripheral that doesn't get you to heaven though that that water water baptism that doesn't get you to heaven coming to OSC we don't get you to heaven Protestants and Catholics that doesn't get you to heaven one thing gets you to heaven you must be born again it's taking it's taking the step before I die it's taking the step though I don't want a relationship with you I want to invite you to that how does that happen as simple as ABC Memphis go let's go back to the Von Trapp family doremi ABC a I admit I'm a sinner and something's broken on the inside it's called sin it's a sin issue the substance the the the the epicenter of sin itself is selfishness I want to live for myself I want to make the rules and you can't because you've been created you are therefore owned and therefore you're accountable that's why that's what sin sin wants say there is no God so you can make your own rules the evidence leaves at the fingerprints the man on the lever is God himself number two it's be believing that Jesus came to fix me from the inside out freaky fix me by forgiving me that's why he died on the cross and see confessing him Romans 10:9 10 says confessing his Lord or we'll just say confessing him as the goat you are the greatest of all time if any of those people you saw on the screen can open up can beat death there the goat the only one that can you can score a bucket you can kick a goal and you can maybe kick a field goal but if you can beat death that's what makes you the go I want you to bow your head because I want to invite you on a journey that's gonna change your life today you may be watching online you may be on our live webcast and I want to challenge you to listen those aren't a again I don't want you to be a too late believer I want you to be a believer now I'm not asking to join us see I might ask you to join a domination I'm asking to be born again because that's what Jesus says those are Jesus words how does that happen passion Sam I'm just gonna pray a simple prayer here and if you're here and say pastor Tim when you pray that born-again prayer I believe in God because his fingers his fingers those all the work of his fingers but now today I see by his arms he loves me that's his attitude if you're here today and you go pastor Tim when you pray that final prayer that born-again prayer I want to start that journey today I want to just take that simple step and the only way I'm not gonna ask you to stand I'm not gonna make you come forward but if you're here didn't say include me in that born again for a pastor Tim include me because I'm gonna start that journey I want to know today I'm going to heaven I want to be born again if that's you without any hesitation I want you to do me one favor though because I want to make sure I see see who it is if you're here today say I want to be part of that prayer would you do me a favor just hold up your hand right now no hesitation say put me in that prayer holding a pot because I'm going to count I want to make sure I see every hand that's up keep them up there's 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 you're the Son of God I believe that on the cross you took my sin my shame and my guilt and you died for it you faced hell for me so I wouldn't have to go you rose from the dead to give me a place in heaven the purpose on earth and a relationship with your father today Lord Jesus I turn from my sin to be born again God is my father Jesus is my Savior the Holy Spirit is my helper and heaven is my home in Jesus name and everybody said amen come on could you put your hands together
