have a kind of extensive handouts of course we only look at a little bit of it most of the handouts are for you to study and look at on your own time but I want to give you just a general overview of the life and the times of what was happening in Israel during Jesus's life and ministry this is these are the briefest statements just to kind of give you the feel and hopefully most of you know a bit of this you've picked it up over the years but it's good to just get it all together one two three four and then as we read the Gospels and go through it we have a better context to understand what's going on when we get a little bit of the geography a little bit of the government a little bit of the social dynamics first we'll start off with we're going to look at look at page three this is kind of odd you might have to tear page three out to look at it or they'll put it up there there you go we have page three up there on the PowerPoint I gave you the overview of the land and what I want you to notice is five main areas and if you know these five general areas three areas on the west side the left of the Jordan River and two areas on the east side if you get those five areas down when you read through the Gospels you're gonna know where Jesus is paragraph a the Land of Israel it's about seventy miles wide not exactly in about 150 miles long it's not a very big piece of real estate now west of the Jordan River there are three of those main areas Galilee Samaria Judea so I'd like you to I want you to lock them judy is the bottom the south right above it Samaria and above that is Galilee now we know Jesus most of his ministry was in Galilee and it's around the Sea of Galilee up at the top of the map there now on the east side of the Jordan River there's Decapolis we'll get to that in a moment just to give you a quick one on that and Perea but Perea is often called beyond the Jordan it's the area beyond the Jordan but it means Perea that's what it means okay let's look at Roman numeral I mean letter a letter number ones what I'm trying to say Galilee the major city of Galilee is Capernaum now that's the here's what I want you to notice Capernaum is the middle is the it's not a Rubik city but it's the biggest city the farthest north of Jerusalem and it's the city Jesus picked for his headquarters and one of the reasons I'm sure there's many is that he would go down to Jerusalem strategically over his three and a half year ministry he went there a few times and he really stirred up things and then he left town and went north to the farthest north Oran main city in Israel that's why over there were other cities but I'm talking about still staying within the Land of Israel and that's Capernaum that became his headquarters now you can see it's a not far from where he grew up Nazareth that's in Galilee as well ok number 2 Samaria now I want you to notice Samaria is a province it's an area and it's a city so it's you know new york new york you know there's Samaria Samaria it's an area and it's a city so just kind of be alerted by that then the third main area that's mentioned is Judea now half of Judea is desert so the population there's not so many out in the desert and that desert of Judea that's that third area here it's again on the left side of the map down there at the bottom that's where Jerusalem is but half of that areas is desert it's called the wilderness of Judea that's what it's called it's that whole desert region number four Perea that is the area just on the right side of the Jordan River east of the Jordan in the Gospels that's called beyond the Jordan when it says in John the Baptist was baptizing beyond the Jordan it means in Perea so you can see it's not far from Jerusalem you know it's just uh you know less than a day's walk from Jerusalem it's just down the way now number five this is an interesting area to capitalist now to capitalist that's the fifth area that I'm highlighting is a group of ten cities now they're Greek cities you say okay that's pretty cool well not really because it's a Roman Empire the Romans of the Greeks were not necessarily friends and it's not Jewish these tent cities are not Jewish and they're not Roman but they're under the Roman authority the Romans defeated the Greeks and so the Greeks still remember that so they don't like Rome that much but they don't the Greeks don't like Israel very much at all the reason that's interesting and important to know about these ten cities this area called Decapolis Jesus would go over there and what he did was interpreted by the Jewish people often and not a positive way says what are you doing into capitalist blessing the Greeks who don't even like us matter of fact they they're anti-israel in many of their ways and there's Jesus always has a number of reasons for going over there but I just want you to be alerted when he goes to the capitalist he's crossing the state line so to speak and he's going to the enemy territory and he's showing kindness to them and you don't flying scribes and Pharisees over into capitalist as a Greek city you don't have a lot of Jewish culture over there so it's a very different setting over there okay paragraph B obviously the Jordan River Jordan River runs north and south throughout the land you know it's only 150 miles whole and the Jordan River runs about 80 not exactly north and south and it connects the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea now paragraph C the Sea of Galilee in the scripture has four names three of them are used in the Gospels three of them so get that clear in your mind I've got it there so you're not kind of confused to saying now what sea is that I thought there was only Sea of Galilee up north and this and the Dead Sea down south that's it there's only two but the Sea of Galilee has four different names in the scripture and there's reasons for that we won't go through that right now now the Sea of Galilee had extra dynamics because you'll see in the bottom of paragraph C there was nine cities I mean they were not very big like Capernaum it's one of the cities there's nine cities around it and they are you know import-export cities is not just fishing cities for sure fishing cities but more than that their goods would come and go because the goods could be transported through the land and and the end the sea had that extra dimension there of economic imports exports etc so therefore you had more tax collectors there and you had more Roman authorities making sure that anybody wasn't getting away with money without paying their taxes so they had a a good amount around the Sea of Galilee of tax collectors and Matthew you know the Gospel of Matthew he was a tax collector it's not surprising that he lived right there around the Sea of Galilee Cave Roman numeral to the climate there's great variance you got got Mount Hermon in the north of by Galilee 9,000 feet I mean Denver's 5000 feet mad Herman's 9,000 it's twice as high almost as Denver the Mile High City and so there is snow-capped mountains up there very cold and then not very far away you have the duty in desert because it remember Judea is half desert and you can read a little bit there paragraph B there's two general seasons like here in Kansas City we have four very distinct seasons very distinct in Israel there's two main seasons there's winter which is rainy moist mild not not always obviously and then there's the summer very little rain and can be really hot and a lot of the land not all the land but can be quite hot the languages there were three main languages spoken by the people who lived in the Land of Israel they're Greek because the Romans spoke Greek and the business people the merchants spoke Greek and the highly educated spoke Greek because that was the international business language then you had some that spoke Hebrew but most of the Jews spoke Aramaic they spoke Aramaic which was a language that they began to speak after the Babylonian captivity and 586 BC I don't want to go to all that but babba Israel went into Babylonian captivity for 70 years and after that the Hebrew language was really diminished and Aramaic is the language that became dominant in the land now Jesus spoke all three languages but I'm just saying you got people moving in the culture speaking the three different languages and there are certain dynamics that happened with that let's look at the government of the land the government over Israel and then we're going to look at some of the leaders the Jewish leadership there we're going to look at the ten major stages of Jesus's menit life administrate we're going to look at them briefly but I want to give you an overview so when you leave here my ideas that you've got a feeling for the ten major stages of what happened in his life so you can think about it you know without having to look at notes to figure it all out of my taking a little while to memorize it and learn it but you the idea you want to know those ten stages so you can kind of go oh I get where he's isin Galilee and he's going down to Jerusalem just to visit a little bit or always in the Jerusalem season now I get where he's at we'll get there in a few minutes let's go back to the government the government of Israel first we're looking at the political government as you know Rome was the dominant Empire of that part of the world so Israel was a little province so to speak under Rome and within Israel there were several sub provinces that were they were you know many provinces the Emperor was Tiberius Tiberius Caesar so just lock that name in he shows up a few times he's the Emperor obviously he lives in Rome but Pontius Pilate is a Roman government governor and he reports to Rome to headquarters to Tiberius is court so Pontius Pilate he's a Roman governor his headquarters the governor's headquarters the governor's mansion is Caesarea and it's about I think about twenty miles or so from Jerusalem so Pontius Pilate did not live in Jerusalem but he would visit it on key occasions particularly the feasts particularly to make sure there was order there it'd be like the Chief of Police going to the big event to make sure there would be order but he lived in Caesarea so Pontius Pilate is the governor now I have Lakes in Festus I put those names there because those were the governor's after Pontius Pilate in the book of Acts because when you read particularly acts 24 Paul spoke with two different times two for two different governors and I just wanted to throw a man since they're in the Bible as well Felix and Festus they were in Pontius Pilate roll they lived in the governor's mansion so to speak at Caesarea paragraph B now the Romans ruled through Jewish representatives I mean they had Roman representatives Pontius Pilate they had Roman governors and tetrarch's but they wanted Jewish government too that would be under them because they could interface with the Jewish culture that was a smart idea and so we have the family of Herod and for 60 years Herod his sons his grandsons and on when one would die the others would inherit the rule and so though Herod is the name of the first one Herod the Great King Herod those that ruled after them after him they were also called Herod because it became the dynasty name the family name and so when do you say Herod you might mean the main one the first one King Herod Herod the Great the one who was responsible for the slaughtering of the infants when Jesus was born but he died right after Jesus was born so that Herod is gone and then we have a Herod Herod Antipas I have number one here Herod Antipas that's the one that were mostly work I mean that's the one that we're running into in the Gospels in the book of Acts it's Herto gripa but again Herod's a title by this time first it's star office a man's name heard the great but his sons inherited the name Herod as a title as a family dynasty so Herod Antipas is the one we're interfacing with that's the one Jesus stands before what he said you know that Fox Herod that Fox he's talking about Herod Antipas now we're going to look at the Jewish government in Israel now they're under the Roman government they're under the thumb and better the heel of Rome they do have real Authority in terms of internal Jewish affairs in terms of some religious and social life but they always had to get Rome they always had to get Rome's approval before any of their laws would I mean would be held up so they wanted to do something they had to make sure it was something that Rome would approve up so they were still slaves of Rome though they had real governmental governmental authority big raff see the most powerful political group Jewish group was obviously the Sanhedrin the Sanhedrin was seventy elders they would represent the Jewish people to Rome the problem is many times they were taking advantage of the Jewish people and lining their own pockets they were fallen men who were politicians and they were not always representing the people and they were not representing God though they were supposed to be representing the Word of God the Torah and they were supposed to be representing Jewish people but often they were just bartering and negotiating for their own position in their own power the Sanhedrin they focused on the internal affairs of Jewish life in Jewish religion etc now under the Sanhedrin that's the real body that's the you know that's the Senate you know using a our own you best terms it would be like the Senators there's a hundred senators there were 70 of the sanhedrin so it's kind of comparable now the scribes you know few scribes were in the Sanhedrin but most scribes were not the scribes they were very devout to the Bible to the Old Testament they would teach the Old Testament but they would scribe it meaning they would responsible for the duplication of the Scriptures because obviously they didn't have printing presses then so every copy of the Bible was handwritten you know hours and hours a day by schools of scribes and there was one mistake it was of the most serious serious offense so these scribes were very meticulous and in the course of that they knew the Bible really really really well I mean they knew every little dot in tittle of the Old Testament so the scribes are the kind of the biblical authorities in the lab they're like hey we read it 10 hours a day we write it down we've done it for 20 30 40 years we know the Bible again the Old Testament now the Pharisees they were a group that rose out of the scribes and the Pharisees they were responsible in society to preserve the law the scribes were responsible to copy it and to teach it the Pharisees they did copy but then they would teach it the Pharisees would of course but they weren't responsible to make sure that the laws that the Sanhedrin put in motion would be faithful to the Word of God that was their idea and many affair sees they grew up as scribes in the schools and they graduated to a position of power and honor a Pharisee now the Pharisees they got overzealous major overzealous I mean really overzealous and they added many any more laws than the laws of Moses and those laws became called the tradition of the elders so when Jesus says man's tradition he means that body of laws that the Pharisees added but the Pharisees said we added them because we know God and we know the Bible therefore we added these laws to preserve his will in our society and Jesus came along is that those laws are absolutely foolishness they their getting in the way they're burdening people that's what Jesus meant when he used the phrase about the traditions of men he meant specifically this body of truth that the Pharisees kept adding more laws to over the years now the Sadducees they were also some of the Sadducees were Sanhedrin some of the Pharisees were Sanhedrin a few scribes or Sanhedrin but the Sadducees they were this was a very powerful influential group again it's a subgroup of the Jewish leadership and they were typically from the ranks of the priests or the Pharisees kind of came up through the schools of the scribes the Sadducees came up through the ranks of the priestly families and schools and they were a lot smaller in number there were a lot fewer Sadducees but they were the wealthy elite leaders religious leaders of the land they had the most money the most honor they you know the high priest was it was a sad you see and the guys around him were Sadducees they were the real power brokers but the problem oh there's a lot of problems but where they were the Liberals they said you know we have the money we're highly educated we got the power and there were more of the Sadducees in the Sanhedrin they had the power bloc of the Sanhedrin because the high priest you know he was Assad you see and they had the money in the wellthen and so they were that was the group to be in if you were into power and prestige well the sadducees that go guys settle down we don't really believe in like the literal physical resurrection that was one of their big points ago let's be honest a physical body isn't going to be raised from the dead come on they were the Liberals they didn't believe in eternal judgment they said nah this is not really real the Pharisee said no it it is the resurrection is real and so is eternal judgment so Jesus when he would walk into a setting in Jerusalem and the Sadducees and Pharisees they were a little bit adversarial competitive with each other they're always fighting each other but they were both agreed to kill Jesus so Jesus one time walked in their midst and there you know eyes are blaring with fire they both want to kill both groups though those groups don't even like each other but they were agreed in their hatred of Jesus the enemy of my enemy is my friend you know you've heard that think about that for a minute but anyway Jesus walks in and he says okay so they were both attacking him he goes let me ask you about the resurrection in the resurrection does this happen or that happen and he knew what he dropped a bomb on him because half of them didn't believe in the resurrection the other half dead and that was a long term long time out I mean long term quarrel so they started fighting each other and Jesus walked on to the next place but that was pretty clever the Essenes verse I mean a paragraph G they were the ascetic community the ascetic means they lived out in the desert ascetic means self-denial they were very austere and ascetic they are intense fasting intense you know they deny themselves everything very ascetic and they were they were the most intense spiritual people I mean cuz they were really believing God for the Messiah to come they were going hard after God and they they lived on the desert because they abandoned the city and all the all the the trappings of the Sadducees and the Pharisees fighting each other trying to be the most powerful in the community and some of them eats were in the Sanhedrin and then they were making Rome happy and the Essenes said you know forget all of this stuff we're going out in the desert we're gonna live a life of devotion to God and purity and they would read the word and walk in purity and John the Baptist was raised out in the desert with the India scene communities that's where he was raised after you know because his parents were quite elderly when he was born and we don't know when they died but we know that John history tells us they were raised by the Essenes out in the in the desert and the debtor's remembers not far from Jerusalem it's the it's Judea Judy is not very big you know 20 30 miles you know one way and maybe 50 miles the other way it's not very big and so you know Jerusalem's right there in the midst of it and then the desert is right right by it down the way from it and so the Essenes are right there then we have the zealots the zealots were the Patriotic Party the zealots they hated Rome the zealots did not want a spiritual Messiah they wanted a conquering King Messiah which is true they really read the Bible right that that the Messiah would be a conquering King but he would also be a high priest and a spiritual leader and said well we don't really care about that part we want him to destroy Rome so the zealots were use violence an assassination and the zealots even went to Jesus couple times said hey hey we're on your team Jesus look this is no I want nothing to do with your approach yes I will be king but I will be king God's Way I'll go to the cross wait 2,000 years let history unfold and come at God's timing yes I will be king but not your way okay let's look at top of page 4 now in a moment we're gonna switch over and look at ever so briefly of course the ten different stages of Jesus's life because I want you to get an overview tonight so that in our next session when we're going to begin to work through it line by line that you'll have at least a sense of it and you can refer to this handout I mean this is ever so simple and Google you get a lot of information real quick and untrusting that you will Roman numeral four five five the problems and the principles of a harmony of the gospel main meaning bringing the four Gospels together to make one storyline that's a harmony of the gospel and that's what we're doing in this class were it's a harmony of the Gospels and there's several books out there you know I mean there's quite a few of them out there Oh through history and there they're all about ninety percent in agreement because it's not a hundred percent precise what order every event is it's pretty close I mean the some of them are guestimation but you're pretty close to the estimation the scholars are I've reviewed a number of different sources of it and so I think most of them again are about ninety percent in agreement with each other there's one or two events that you know instead of being number 32 it's 38 or the other way around and the dating you could get really close to the date where Jesus did an event the timing of it and the location you can't always get real precise but you can get pretty close so there's an element of guessing but it's about you know it's a five or ten percent margin of guess or a margin of error and so I'm going to put a give you in the days to come at the next session like a layout of a I don't remember how many steps but it's like three hundred different steps that Jesus took steps is not the right word I mean events things that took place it's about 300 maybe a little bit less I can't remember the number 250 300 and I want to put a general location and in a timing on it so you can Steven see the storyline unfold because when you see what Jesus did in Galilee and then you see what he did in Jerusalem and then he goes back to Galilee but you don't know he went from Galilee Jerusalem back to Galilee you miss a lot of what took place and the Holy Spirit the way I understand it would say hey I gave you four pictures of the life of Jesus if you really care put them together I help you if you really care put some effort in this and learn the storyline I mean we're talking about the storyline of the man we love that most beautiful Matt and there is a little effort to put the four pictures the four Gospels into one congruent story one flowing story again different scholars through history have and most of them are about 90% in agreement again a few little differences here there and you got to just allow those differences because you can't be sure exactly on some of the exact dates and locations but you could be quite really close to sure and so I wrote a little bit here so you could say no wait a second it seems like there's a contradiction between in Matthew it says he said this but in mark it says he said that which is it and the and the answer is he said both because many times in a sermon number one what Jesus preached undoubtedly the same sermon a number of times he didn't just preached the Sermon on the Mount one time got it move on he undoubtedly shared those principles out of number of occasions he preached night and day for three and a half years nearly I mean not always night and day but I mean he was and that's his number one message was the Sermon on the Mount besides the revelation of the father well we only have one place Matthew five six and seven and then we have Luke six and we compare them together the language isn't always the same but Jesus might say why preach that message a number of times and when I said was it important spirit I gave three or four promises for the people that are poor in spirit not just one matthew picked up one luke picked up one i had sent a couple others neither from picked up so they're not contradictory because no one gospel carries the whole thing and jesus did similar healings and gave similar messages in multiple locations so some of the kind of the liberal scholars say well it says he did it here but it says there I said no he did it twice you know sometimes I'll say well he said this but over here it says he said that he said both of them in the same message I mean when you time his messages in other 94 seconds taught us parable then he moved on to the next city he he unpacked it he developed that he's there for days sometimes so anyway I have some for those of you which I actually really appreciate this cuz I'm one of them I'm zealous to know it are these stories contradictory how come they don't add up and I just have some of the the reasoning of what happens when you bring a harmony together there's four or five things when you read it I've talked a few students here and there in the last week and they go oh well well then maybe it is real in a stuff contradiction I said be of good cheer it is real and it isn't a contradiction you can be sure the Holy Spirit didn't mess it up turn to the top of page 5 so now we're gonna look at excuse me we're gonna look at the ten different parts of Jesus thirty-year ministry life and ministry now here I have you I have a couple pages I'm just giving you a snapshot of the phone I'll give you a full one next next time we gather in a in our next session I'm only giving you a snapshot and I pulled a few of them out just so you can kind of get a little bit before and a little bit after and what I want you to get in this next 10 or 15 minutes is just the feel of his whole life because the way I am at least if I see the big picture then I can understand the smaller parts four person comes to me and they explain a smaller part in detail but I don't see the big picture I always say stop wait tell me the whole picture and then I can really lock into the subunits other people are different personalities but so when I studied the Gospels the first time I ever taught this the harmony of the Gospels was 35 years ago I was in my 20s and I devoted it a year to this studying scholars on it you know guys that really poured their life into it because I'm you know I'm maybe 25 years old when I when I first taught the whole life of Christ I did first you know step by step and through his whole life back when I was pastoring in st. Louis before I came to Kansas City which I came here 34 years ago and I remember I was so excited I spent a whole year on it because I said I wasn't really doing it for the sake of the people though I was hoping they got blessed I said I love Jesus I want to know his story I don't know his story I know what the Galilee I know he died I know he did miracles I know some parables I want the I want the the continuity of the story I want to see it unfold and so I was just frustrated that's not the right word I was hungry to get the clear unbroken continuous story so I just said I'm gonna study it for a year too because I got to get it because I love this man I want to know his story because I adore him and I want to know what think about it talk about it I'm going to read the Bible and be able to put it together not just to be a teacher because I want to be a worshipper I went up delight and adore in it in the truth of the story and the reason I'm saying that to you just don't let think of this as an IHOP you class I mean this but think of it as a chance in your life to take a few moments take a step back and we're gonna be a year on it so it's more in a moment but you know and you're gonna see the whole story unfold of this man you may not remember all the details but you want to get the panorama the big view and then you'll understand the details far far better and they just come alive with all the context in place well part one and again on the on the long the full complete harmony that I'm going to give you of all the love the four Gospels again there's 250 or 300 steps I can't remember but there's many many more than I have here on this little abbreviated thing here this is just it gave you a little jumpstart to get an overview starts off first Jesus's pre-existence you know John that's where he starts and then I think it's very important that God says I don't want them just to know he's the uncreated God I want to know that he's fully human he has an ancestry and there's so much revealed about Jesus in his ancestry which we'll look at because he's the only man in history that ever picked his great-grandparents I mean you didn't I didn't Jesus with the father he looks down says I want that harlot in my family line well this is okay I want that murderer I want that Noble worshipper I want that young woman I want that Gentile I want them in my family line now in the Jewish culture whoever was in your family line was of greatest importance jesus said I want harlots tax collectors murderers in my line because I'm coming for them I love them and I want devout and intellectuals not wealthy Kings I went um all in my line we'll get to that later but it's a so when we see the part one here when I see his pre existence and his genealogy it's that mystery of who he is for me eternal ages in context to his full identity with broken humanity that's what this part one says to me awesome mystery the transcendent God fully identified with broken humanity what a glorious mystery and he says I want you to be my partner forever that's the man that wants you the man that has this beginning this human beginning but this pre existence is God let's go to number two part two just a little bit we have Jesus and John the Baptist is birth to their manhood so this covers about 30 years and I'll have a document I have a written but I don't know don't want to overwhelm you as to why I believe the dating of Jesus's birth is 5 BC approximately it could be a little you know a few months later a few months earlier and why his when he went yeah began his ministry in 27 ad there's a lot of I didn't figure it out myself I studied it from guys and gals that are scholars but there's other positions that say he began his ministry in 30 ad I believe you began in 27 ad so I'm in that camp and I'll give you a little pager to put it on the internet for you if for those that care about that I'm I care about those kind of things I like to see them all line up and all the dates match and and see it and they do well it starts off and again this beginning of angels visiting women that they would have children but not according to nature we have an elderly barren woman and then we have a virgin but angelic visitation I see and we'll look at this a little bit more later but it's this zeal that God has it's not just that God is doing something spectacular he's creating a human story for them because when the angel came to John this impacted aunts uncles cousins leaders in the community I mean the stories were widespread and there's an accumulative impact upon Jesus and his family and his brothers and the elders in Nazareth all of these things are impacted by these stories they're not just a spectacular event that's kind of cool there you have it they all have social impacts and dynamics to them we'll look out later so Gabriel comes I mean think about that the angel Gabriel appears to a woman and says you're going to have a child as a virgin then number five God gives Joseph again this is just the storyline you know this but it's a marvelous story I like to just think I to think of the story of the mother of the one that I love with all of my heart Joseph he gets dreams matter of fact he gets four different prophetic dreams and will look at him just briefly but in one of the sessions but these dreams didn't just impact him they impacted Jesus his brothers the community they had social dimensions to these dreams then the Shepherd's now this is an event that a group out there that's disconnected from the family line so it's a complete unbiased testimony of a whole group of people and even all the people around about who saw what the Shepherd's saw but they didn't get in the storyline God is anchoring this story in human identity in human drama and in real social dynamics then they go to Egypt Jesus as an infant is a dreamed God gives Joseph a dream and they go down to Egypt he's only a few months old you know it and they take him down there this young mother is with child down in Egypt in and all that went on down there so now they come back to Nazareth he's still a baby so that's in two part two just a snapshot part three there's ten parts of course you could organize it many different ways but I organized it with ten parts now this is John the Baptist is ministry and Jesus is the temptation I put these together they were very closely associated so God raised up this man who grew up with the Essenes out in the wilderness he grew up in the Essene communities of prayer and fasting and purity and holiness and and now out there and so he's out in the wilderness in that context but God anoints him with power course he's visited there's an end you know Gabriel the angel Gabriel visits his father just like the angel Gabriel visited Mary and then the time came where he was to baptize Jesus and Jesus was tempted now the point of not the only point but one of the main points of Jesus's baptism and his temptation is God the father's telling us he is fully identified with humanity he wasn't baptized for repentance but as we'll get to later he was baptized for righteousness sake he wanted to make a full identification even with the plight of Israel and their own need for redemption because I'm standing with you and the waters of baptism I'm one of you guys yes I'm the uncreated God but I'm fully identify I had identified with you I have an ancestry then he's tempted in every way that we are and the point is I'm with you I'm one of you I understand you and I didn't just come down to you but I'm bringing you up to where I live and where I reign so I came down and I'm bringing you up but we're going to be together forever whether in the New Jerusalem ruling on the earth whatever together forever I'm with you and the baptism in the temptation actually our down payments of that reality in that truth well part for now he begins his public ministry 30 years old we're about thirty years old he starts in Judea remember that's the bottom part of the nation where Jerusalem is it's on the left side of the map Judea he starts down there now he shows up on the scene I mean he's baptized and tempted people don't get who he is deemed Oh John the Baptist said this is the one because the the dove lighted on him but he were going what the would like okay what's that mean you'll say so people didn't get it yet so now he's walking around Judea it says Bethany now Bethany is only two miles from Jerusalem whenever you see the city of Bethany think Bethany is as far from Jerusalem as the prayer room is from this building so don't think Bethany like way over there just think it's up you know 20 minute 30 minute walk 30 minute walk so he's walking around in Bethany just outside Jerusalem he meets these four guys Andrew and Peter now part of the story is it's a day like today and these four guys Andrew Peter Philip and Nathanael they're walking by will tell the story a little bit more today it's a normal day but they don't know that they are intersecting with divine destiny in divine timing they don't know but it's a day like today and part of the message is tomorrow the suddenly you've got anything could happen but I didn't seem like a big deal he looked at me said hey guys I like you guys they said hey we like you they didn't realize her names would be on the New Jerusalem on the foundation stones had no idea where this is going and part of the drama of life is the way it unfolds often the most dramatic things that unfold over the years begin with the simple little whisper that seems like nothing and you look back years later that what on earth why didn't I grasp that and that's part of the story of even how these Jesus interacts with his top apostles because this is how he even enter acts with us some of you something happened in the last year too and to this day does it mean much to you 10 or 20 years trying you look back oh my goodness that was to God I didn't know that what was going on you know I remember the first time I met Bob Jones and he said hey you're gonna have 24-hour singers and musicians you're gonna be on hairiest Truman's property with praying for Israel I thought the guy was a nut I really did went home and my wife said what's they like hookups I said it was a waste of effort in but it was entertaining but it was a wasted afternoon I thought it was a total waste it we ends up I look back 34 years later there's one of the most important days of my life I didn't know it took me a while to even put it together something was beginning and this is part of the message that I don't want to give him a sermon each one so Mike slow down no opposite go faster don't slow down do this in the course so he's down in the South and Judea Bethany right next to him now he walks up north to Cana now look at your map Cana of Galilee it's close to Nazareth he's at a family wedding it's his first miracle he's at the family wedding his whole family's there because it's only a few miles down the road you know they've been gone the synagogue and family outings or whatever and Jesus there they're out of wine mom looks at him says son she's gone mom gone no no just just hey we got this covered she goes son he says no it's not not yet well mom was right and undoubtedly Jesus was right - will unpack a little bit that where we go but his first was a no it's not time but it ends up it begins right there and one of the reasons because that so many of these miracles by the way are prophetic messages about the heart of God but there are also prophetic messages about events so his miracle ministry begins in a wedding and we know it ends in a wedding there's a great gathering of the bride from all the nations in the New Jerusalem and the great wedding feast of the Lamb well this is the down payment this is a whisper of it that nobody got I assure you Jesus understood it well then he goes number 16 it was gonna just hit a couple of these now he's you know the miracle happened there so they're starting to talk you know like what was how think I did that mirror what what was that because he made I don't remember the number of gallons but it's something like a hundred gets more than there's like a hundred gallons he like at a wedding he didn't make three gallons you know at the end of the wedding kind of helped him out there at the end he made like a hundred or some I'll get the number right in a you know by next by next session but it was a gigantic amount and so it certainly created a little bit of a stir number 16 then he walks down ninety miles he's very intentional about this this is his first Passover because the Passover is always April think a propeller you know might once be March 30s but just think in the general sense think April and so Jesus three and a half years he's anointed he's in for Passover's of course he dies on the last one so he's he's in full involved in for Passover Passover is one of them he doesn't come down to Jerusalem and there's no record of him big down in Jerusalem but here he as he walks 90 miles down his first Passover as The Anointed Messiah that released into miracles from the father by the father's perfect will so he does first thing he does I mean this is unbelievable he walks in the temple nobody knows who he is young guy carpenter guy he clean ox all the chairs over the tables like hello one of the things we're gonna find out that he does this often it's a principle that I call Jesus he offends our mind to reveal our heart he does it over and over and over I mean he's in the human sense he's picking a fight but no he's not as no not I'm stirring stuff up because I want what's in the inside to come to the tub I'm gonna confuse their mind or offend their mind he came in and knocked all the tables over you know here's what I would have said Jesus Turner young man here's what you do walk into the temple call out a few words of knowledge tell them the name of their family members you know pray for a few sick walk over to the graveyard you know over here outside the city open up a few graves get the guy you know guys breathing again come back in and say now guy sit down you know there are some Bible verses about defiling the temple I'd like you to pray about it next week I'm going to come back in I'm going to talk to you about it let you pray about it and then give him a chance to respond no he comes in as a total stranger kicks over tables and even his own guys are going Jesus oh come on man what are you doing and he's thinking now I'm offending their mind and of course we can't go do that because we're not God we don't have perfect wisdom so don't take that principle on yourself just know that often in his leadership even in our lives in history and in the nations one of his ways he's doing things we don't want because if you love me you'll find your way through this but if you don't really want me you'll find an excuse in a Bible verse to dump me so as apostles we're going man you're you're off that's weird that's rude but ah now we we like to like you and you duh oh we're sticking with you notes okay keep going keep going Jesus is never nervous ever about those situations and one group of guys and gals their heart comes through it and they're more devout and more trustful in his leadership the other group they now have a reason to get rid of him in his leadership he says I'm not trying to talk anybody into anything they don't want at the heart level so he allows things like that well I'm Way over doing this I have 32 more seconds cuz I want to stay on time on these things so this didn't go the little way I planned part 5 I'm gonna go one minute extra part 5 he now goes to Galilee now he's up north he moves into Galilee to Capernaum that becomes his headquarters and he's there for about 18 months based in Capernaum but you're gonna find out in a little while later Capernaum rejects him and Nazareth rejects him and he has some very strong words for Capernaum before it's over and it all plays into the big drama but I spent too much time on the other stuff okay let's look at we'll look at it when we get to the class parts I mean to the to these issues one by one part 6 part 6 so now after he's moved to Galilee and that's his headquarters for about 18 months he kind of withdrawals for about six months not entirely but it's not near as active for about six months and he's focusing on the 12 apostles he's training them now notice when he's training the 12 apostles it is like may 80 29 and he's going to die in one year I mean he's moving getting them on the fast track I mean he's only training them and the most intense way we always three three deaf years but that's not exactly it when you put the timing of it he's really on a fast track of his training of them then part seven he moves down south because he would he lived up north in Galilee and he would visit for a week or two and then go back up he'd visit stirred things up go back up visit stir things up go back up and it's nothing wasn't escaping he was sowing seeds they were going to mature in the Devine time for the right outcome so now he's going to go down to Judea and for three months he's in the area and he's moving into Jerusalem the leaders of Jerusalem think they're moving in on him but he's moving in on them then he goes next door to Perea remember you got the you got the Jordan River on the left side is Judea on the right side is faria they're right next door to each other he goes over there for a while it's called the the area beyond the Jordan he spends about three months there and then the final week only only a week he enters in Jerusalem and presents himself or officially as the Messiah it's really God the Father presenting him as what's really happening he's being presented but it's only one week that he's actually in Jerusalem when all the fireworks all the dynamic miracles hatred plots and Triggs betrayal loyalty stumbling recovering of the Apostles all of this unfolds and he dies he pays for our sin he's raised from the dead and the number of times that he appears to people not only for their good but for the social impact the dynamics that had upon the early church the people he strategically appeared to had even the 70 see he trains the 70 you'll see it if you mean when we get there he only trains the 70 in those final weeks before he dies a couple months you know maybe 10 or 12 weeks because the 70 he's getting ready for the book of Acts leadership team they don't even know there's going to be a book of Acts then he raises from the dead and the strategic appearances worship team go ahead and come on up and the word and that the appearances again have social impact and and their strategic for the book of Acts leadership team and then the final thing is he has sins that's the way the story ends the ascension now the ascension is not the resurrection the resurrection is when his physical body came out of the grave he's resurrected ascending is when his physical body as a man as a human with a real physical material body he ascends to heaven it's not just the trip going up the ascending the ascension is much more than that he's seated at the right hand of the Father a man is in the most powerful position of a whole created order a man is there and the man is for you and he's coming after you because he loves you and this thing ends with the Ascension and he's declaring in essence all of my plans all of my promises everything I taught will be vindicated and fully validated you will see my ascension is the absolute proof I'm in the power position of all created order that nobody has nobody can stop me everything I promised everything I said everything I taught will be seen to be true in wise and good amen and amen let's stand before the Lord Lord here we are before you Lord we love your leadership
