so good afternoon everyone um uh welcome um parents for room for today so um miss janice would you uh like yes good afternoon good afternoon parents and thank you very much for joining us this afternoon um i am miss janice and together with me here is miss and we are from pillars tutorials and this event is just one of the many ways we hope to be a blessing to you and your family during these difficult times today we come together with just one goal and that is how to help our kids not just to survive but also to thrive in this new normal education and here to help us is mr franco abduln who is also a parent teacher like us and he was also a google certified educator mr franco thank you uh miss janice for for that introduction and again so welcome to our parents uh and also some teachers know i think we also have um some teachers here with us and i think it's also important that the the teachers also know uh the position of the parents um because uh in this shift of education uh we'll be expecting uh a stronger collaboration between the parents and the teachers and precisely no i think now this is such a an important venue um for for the parents to actually be more equipped on handling distance learning while we're equipping our our students we are equipping our teachers on distance learning i think um equally we should equip our parents as well because for this shift to education okay so um here's how we're going to go about the parents forum for today okay so we'll have a short input by yours truly and then we'll open with um open forum after the presentation so please do reserve your questions because if you chat them now it might get lost in the live chat so please hold on to your questions write them down put it in your mobile mobile phones and type it later during the open forum or question and answer um period okay so that we could actually um see it and um attend to it okay so i think we could begin now um with our presentation um on on parenting essentials okay for um distance learning okay so again uh welcome uh parents uh teachers uh we have some students here also welcome uh and thank you for being with us here uh today i know it's a saturday and uh rest day nothing from work but um thank you for spending time with us i think this is such a an important thing to to to discuss among our our partners in education which is which are the parents okay so in this parents forum what we hope to accomplish or to talk about would be the parenting essentials okay for distance learning okay now um some disclaimer no um although i have been teaching for 12 years and i have like um uh some perspective of uh of the education the philippines okay and also this idea of distance learning i think what we can really offer this time is that a perspective that's practical coming from a teacher parent like me okay so that's going to be the perspective i'm going to share today which is the uh the perspective of the of a parent okay and of also as a teacher okay so um we're coming from actual experiences um in distance learning okay so that's what we hope to accomplish and again this is about equipping our parents as well because we believe that in this distance learning uh parents will play a vital integral role in the success of distance learning okay because our students will be spending so much time at home uh learning the things that they have to learn okay so before we do that before we go to uh our discussion of the parenting essentials okay i'd like to first thank uh piller's tutorial for inviting us so we are actually i am part of a group called agape teacher support that's an organization a group demand for assistance teachers okay so we give trainings webinars and all other assistance to teachers in order to help them shift to distance learning as well okay so um you may visit that or visit us or check our page at agape teacher support if you would like to see what we're doing okay so let's begin with um i think before we even understand the essentials of uh parenting in distance learning you have to understand first what is distance learning okay so uh understanding so would allow our parents okay you parents okay to position yourselves exactly where you're needed okay so understanding the complexity understanding the the details understanding what is distance learning will allow you to exactly know what do i need to do in order to support my kid or my child okay in this shift to distance learning okay so when we talk about distance learning um in a usual setup okay um the learner is allowed to interact with the content so basically content are your um your knowledge okay so these are the concepts ideas that the student needs to learn okay from a certain subject uh you also have code okay so is the teacher okay but we're a word called distance learning because each role as well will accordingly in distance learning they will no longer be the the source of um information okay rather they will be the one coaching the students to understand how to use utilize um information and navigate in the digital space okay and of course you also have your community and all of this in a regular setup in our pre-pandemic era all of these uh elements of education could be found and accessed by the learner in a physical defined base okay so if i go to the school i go to a classroom okay where i belong i will have instant access to the community of learners i will have instant access to coach or to the teacher i will be delivered by the teacher or designed by the teacher so all of this are conveniently packaged in a in a physical defined space but the problem is that given our situation right align space or learning space so that's what's missing right now okay and that's the reason why we are forced to shift distance learning okay we're in uh there is that acceptance that there is a defined physical gap between the learner and these elements okay so what happens um in distance learning or what happened what's happening right now is that we have lost that physical defined space for learning okay so bixby hen um the students now no longer have that uh convenient access to this uh elements of learning which is the community coach and the content okay and these are all um um separated by a physical gap okay so and that's going to be the challenge no um our challenge now okay um in education is that how do we provide access to our learners so that they may be able to interact with the community access the content and be guided by a coach okay so that's that's that's what distance learning is trying to answer that despite the distance despite the physical gap learning could actually happen and learners could actually access this these different elements of education okay so now we move to the educational shift okay so given our situation and um given the idea of distance learning now we're shifting our our modalities and approach to learning okay and we have what we call the online distance learning all right so there's a difference uh parents know distance learning is the it's a general term when learning uh is occurring when there is a physical space between the learner and the elements of education okay now online distance learning is when you use um online tools okay and of course internet in order to bring together this elements um of education okay so bixby and using your online tools you're able to connect these three elements so that it could be accessed by the learner and therefore learning could actually happen okay so through the use of technology and internet this gap is easily bridge okay so that's now what's going to happen okay so and and for most of us know who will be doing online distance learning this is what we are going to do okay to provide the learners access to these three key elements of education and also for the parents know um knowing these three key elements is also a helpful um knowledge or um idea on choosing which school you wouldn't like would you would like to enroll your kids knowing these three key elements you would be able to um really filter or assess if the school has a good online distance learning program okay so simple like my questions no um do they have a a platform do they have a space for the community of learners to interact if they do that's a check will the learners have actual access to content okay package in a meaningful ways if it's a check that's a good point as well for that school will they have access to coaches okay are the coaches um accessible enough in order to guide your kids or your children uh into acquiring skills and knowledge if it's a yes that's also a check for that school okay so you can um you can use these three uh key ideas in order to choose which school will i enroll my kid into okay so important because one if one of the things are missing here um or is missing here there's going to be a problem in terms of achieving what we would like to achieve in um online distance learning okay now um as we shift to distance learning as well i think you've also heard about the idea of modularity okay so it means that we have shifted okay to modular format okay so what is that what what is this one how is this um different okay to our usual setup okay so in our usual setup okay what what happens is that you deliver lessons in a more chronological order okay so you for example you have lesson one first and then you proceed with lesson two then perhaps um you will you will have a quiz in between and then you'll have lesson three okay and after that lesson four and lesson five and then if you have a periodical test or a quarterly test that could be the the end or the conclusion of this um quarter okay but um we could no longer afford this because we are no longer in a physical space it means that there is that limitation in terms of um access to some resources or access to our usual approaches or strategies for education so what happens now is that in a modular setup okay you now package your lessons into modules for example lesson one and two okay possibly only lesson one could be converted or could be packaged into a module um one module okay and then you also have um lesson four okay or lesson three four five package into another module so you have your module too okay now these are not just simple um repackaging of the lessons for example are we saying that lesson one and two would simply be just combined together and be called a module one okay or uh will we do just uh combine lesson three four and five and then package them or repackages as module two no uh parents okay what we're doing okay what schools are doing what teachers are doing we are rearranging and arranging this lessons into meaningful blocks a usually thematic no that are designed a self-contained learning package for independent learning so what happens teachers that our parents is that we find connection between the lessons okay so for example i'll give example in my in my school uh in our school for the first trimester we only have two modules okay for social science for grade 10. and um the first theme is on uh nationalism okay so we gather lessons historical events um activities assessments that will teach them about nationalism okay so in that way we package the entire lessons and activities and assessments into one module okay and of course it's also a self-contained which means that that's the biggest difference no in in your usual setup there's always that intervention of the teacher which means that the teacher could teach in the classroom give content provide activities in the classroom as well in modules the students are um you know we required it to interact with the content with the lessons in an in a more independent manner which means that uh activities will have to do on their own um exploration they will have to do on their own leading acquiring knowledge skills and ideas okay so the way the teachers and the schools set up their modules is that for the students to actually perform it on their own okay so let me repeat that um parents know the students will have to perform it on their own if the modules are too hard okay and the students cannot perform it then there are several reasons to look at it okay so petting the modules are not age appropriate or developmentally not appropriate for your kid or your child so you also have to check on that okay but um with us we have to trust our teachers now i i and i trust our teachers that um we have been trained to design the design activities uh modules um in consideration of age appropriateness and developmental uh milestones of our students okay so that's what happened now okay so distance learning using modular format okay also take note uh parents know you have to expect um a certain reduction of content okay so uh this will no longer be the usual heavy load um subjects or topics okay we we teachers and the schools have done a heavy content auditing okay given the reduction of days and sessions for the year um given the limitations that we are also encountering and also we would like to reduce content because uh technically uh there's no reason to include more content while the students actually have a free access to all the content they need because they're online okay and also we do not want to replicate the situation in the classroom we're in will be requiring our students to look at the monitor um from seven o'clock or eight o'clock up to four pm so that's not going to happen okay um and most schools have also considered that okay we do not want our students um having that lengthy screen time and so it's there's more focus on skills and competencies so you'll notice that the way modules are packaged it's actually to target a certain skill or a competency for those who are teaching in the public schools they and if you've encountered it already you have heard about the melc the most essential learning competencies that's actually a form of content auditing so rather than focusing on the content standards the usual content standards uh dep ed provided uh the melc to guide the teachers to just choose and pick the topics and content that should be included in the modules and significantly reduce the content in order to just focus on the most essential learning competencies okay okay now modalities of dl okay so we have um certain modalities and different modalities of dl okay so it's important to know these parents okay because your role will uh will be based accordingly on the dl or the modality of dl that will be used by the school okay so it would depend highly you know what what modality will be used by your school it would uh define your roles in this distance learning okay so the first one uh we have online distance learning so you have um a really good these are for um the places or schools with um access to uh internet or consistent access to internet so they could actually carry out online distance learning so in this setup you have the content you have the coach and you have the community of learners in one space okay so it means that modules are delivered online okay in this case uh we'll be discussing later on what will what will be your role if you are a parent of a student taking on online distance learning okay uh those that has a limited or inconsistent access to internet okay or there's that problem in accessibility uh would result to what they call remote learning wherein they're still the coach you still have the content okay a package in modules either delivered online or printed you you would be missing the community of learners because there's no digital space set up for the learners to actually interact okay and of course you have the remote study so there's a definite problem in accessibility um via internet so modules are printed and there's only access to the content okay so will access to the coach or to the community of learners okay but of course as much possible no what we aim to do would be online distance learning because that's a more holistic more uh complete uh approach to distance learning but um for those who are doing remote study developing their modules modules could also be designed in a way to um to fill in the gaps provided by the lack of accessibility to internet okay okay so what are the schools doing right now okay so as we shift educational um perspective and approach okay so for those who are doing online distance learning most probably these are the things they are prioritizing one they're setting up their learning management system because that would allow community of learners to engage with each other okay uh they will also be doing capacity building for the use of on online tools and module development as well okay so even online disaster learning they would also be using modular format it delivered in a different way okay um also remote learning we're in okay for a while um i think there's a problem with my presentation for a while i apologize for that okay i it took me so long before i noticed let me share again okay um before we move on let me just confirm if we are actually able to see the presentation um we're just fixing the technicalities online we'll be online in a while sorry okay okay hello parents and audiences ramming salamat for for waiting and uh for for being with us and for patiently um waiting for the technical errors to be resolved okay so i think we're here okay i think we have audio already and our presentation is now being shown okay so i'll be waiting for some more comments to confirm that all right thank you uh thank you parents uh thank you our viewers um who are always patient and um willing to wait okay so so now as as promised i will be uh repeating everything i will be um reminding our presentation all right so uh welcome parents and uh teachers i think we also have teachers in the forum right now okay so as explained earlier okay as explained um by ms janice earlier from the pillars tutorial that this parents forum is basically designed in order to also involve the parents as we prepare for distance learning and what we hope um to do now is to um to give you some parenting essentials for distance learning okay so that's that's what we want to do okay that's what we aim to do in this parents forum so um we'll be giving it tips we'll be giving you some reminders and i think the beauty of this parents forum is that while we cannot always assume that we are experts in the field because i think no one actually is an expert right now because there's no precedent uh whatsoever in this um shift in education so we are all newbies we are all beginners in this shift to education so what we are offering right now are actually uh practical tips um for parents coming from parents like us okay so later on my um um co-hosts okay um we'll also be sharing with you their tips now their experiences uh in parenting um as we shift to distance learning okay so um before we begin i'd like to introduce our group again we are the agape teacher support okay um we provide trainings webinars if you are from a school would you you would like to invite us do send us a message agapitc gmail.com and we will be more than glad to send you a trainer to help you shift to distance learning okay okay now um we we now move on to our uh discussion for today so before we move on um i think there's a importance no um and value in looking back at the idea of distance learning why because parents understanding what is distance learning the modalities of distance learning and other um considerations okay um on distance learning this would allow us okay to um position ourselves okay properly uh and uh we would know better as parents how to actually support and help our our kids our children in shifting or navigating in distance learning okay so now um in our usual setup okay so this is what our setup is um please pre-pandemic era okay so the learner is allowed to interact with the content so that's usually your knowledge your topics um ideas concepts that they need to learn um as in as a student in a particular subject okay and of course you also have access to the coach okay the the coach okay will be uh you should of course that's your teacher okay so we term it a coach in distance learning because also the role of the teacher will shift accordingly um into distance learning so mcgee badin young expectations and the roles of the teacher as we shift to online distance learning okay and then um the learners also have access to the community of other learners okay so it's been in a physical defined space or inside the classroom when they go to school a pre-pandemic era the student has an automatic instant access to these three key elements of education so they have access to community of learners they have access to the coach right away and they have access to the content given by the teacher okay but the problem is in our situation right now we cannot be in the classroom okay so it means that we we cannot afford to go into the classroom and actually provide our learners access to this three key elements of education okay so that's what's missing in today's educational setup okay so you have now um the three key elements being um separated by a physical gap okay so and also the learner will have a physical gap okay um again or between this uh three elements or key elements of education okay so that now that's the challenge okay so in distance learning this is what we're trying to answer if we are separated by physical gap how do we give our learners access to these three key elements okay and that's what distance learning is trying to answer okay they're trying to we're trying to um bridge the gap okay between these three killing three key elements so that the learners could actually access them okay and still continue with learning despite not going to the classroom or not going to the uh school okay so that's now what's happening okay as we shift okay okay this will be now the changes in education okay so as we shift to distance learning okay uh and the most um um most heard okay or very common form of distance learning is what we call the online distance learning yes for parents teachers there's a big difference between what is online distance learning and what is online uh distance learning and even online learning is a different one okay so basically what distance on online distance learning is kind of distance learning we're in in order to bridge the gap between the community the coach and the content and the learner we use online tools and internet in order to provide them access to these key elements okay so through the use of technology and internet uh this gap is easily bridged okay so you are able now to connect the community the coach uh the coach and the content and the content in the community and um allow access for the learners to have to engage with these three key elements now parents in choosing your schools okay so when you choose your schools okay where you're going to enroll your kids okay for online distance learning these are the three key elements you have to check so when you receive their primers when you see their their programs okay for their distance learning you have to carefully check if they have um set up a space for the community of learners to actually engage with each other okay do they have um did they do content auditing um so that um they'll be able to focus more on the skills and uh competencies okay uh will my kid or my child have access to content okay um will they have access to a coach or a facilitator so if if all of these three key elements are present then you have a good program for that online distance learning and enrollment okay but if there's one key element missing that's going to be a little problematic because it's going to give um problems along the way when you carry out your online distance learning okay now um as we shift also to distance learning okay we also shifted to what we call modularity it's a b hand um lessons now okay learnings they are now packaged in what we call modules okay so what are modules okay um let me show you by um comparing uh our usual setup okay to our modular setup okay so in our usual setup pre pandemic no usually lessons are are bulk in one quarter or one one semester or one trimester okay so and then it goes in a more chronological order so you have lesson one then you have lesson two you have lesson three and so on and so forth okay and the student will have to take them um one after another okay and then um the students will also have to engage with some assessments in between these lessons okay um now what happens in a modular format okay so in a modular format what happens is that you are now packaging okay the lessons into what we call modules okay so your activities now are packaged in one module all your learning activities all your assessments and other elements or key ideas or knowledge into one module okay so for example lesson one and two could be packaged into module one okay um well lesson three four and five could be um packaged into module two but parents and teachers now this is not um like uh an easy or a common um really packaging of lessons uh see lesson one that's see lesson two um let's just combine it together and let's call it uh module one okay and we push again on uh lesson three and four and five let's just put it together and call it module two no what happens in a modular format is that schools and teachers are now designing okay or packaging these lessons in the meaningful blocks episode they're strengthening the connections between the lessons taking away the the the content that's not necessarily uh or does not belong into that into the theme thematic approach and plus these modules are self contained makes in bixabihen the student will have to engage and interact with the module uh on his own and therefore it's designed to be done by the student on his own um ultimate goal distance learning and this modularity is to develop independent learners so at the end of the day learners should be independent in their quest for education and parents can understand this is also a reminder of our role okay because um unlike to the fears of many parents this should not be the role or this should not be uh the focus of the parents okay later on we'll go through uh more of that as we discuss the role of the parents okay uh and also let's take note that there will be content auditing so schools uh have done um content auditing in order to reduce the content of this year's education so that we could focus more on skills and competencies and also technically speaking um counterproductive and impractical maglev and sobrang daming content or focus content this year while the students actually have access to all the contents we would be giving them so instead of focusing on the content okay what we're focusing is on the development of skills so that the students will be able to use that content okay with efficiency and effectiveness okay so it's not about what they learned this year it's about what they how they use or how do they use what they have learned this year so you know focus and focal point education attend this year okay so also parents knowing that you would um should also know and you should be able to locate yourself and position yourselves um in helping your your kids or your children okay okay um and and when you talk about modalities um distance learning you also have different modalities okay why is this important because this will uh change um the kinds of expectations we have from parents or the roles of the parents into distance learning okay so we have several modalities now okay um so for example so you have your online distance learning and you have your remote learning and you have your remote study so when you have online distance learning you uh this is the ideal okay this is what we want now we have asked internet we have access to consistent access to um um to wi-fi okay and in that case when you have constant stable consistent access to internet you will have access to this three key elements of education your content your coach and your community okay and modules are delivered online as well okay but of course there's that reality nah indeed access to um stable internet that's why some will have to resolve to remote learning okay we're in there is uh there's still the coach communicating via platforms that require less internet or low bandwidth requirements like emails or text messaging or messengers etc or viber okay um plus you still still have the content delivered by a modules uh online or it could also be printed okay and of course eternity remote studies challenging part nathan because some of our areas in the philippines do not have actual access to a good internet so telling about device or internet so what's going to happen is that modules are to be printed and what's going to happen is it's a remote study wherein the learner will have to engage with the content and will not have an opportunity to engage with the coach and the community of learners okay but um for those who are using remote study and printing their modules uh in our module making um webinars we have reminded that um this should not stop us from creating interactive and engaging modules uh in order to fill in the gap uh provided by this um by this lack of resources okay okay um and when when parents know already [Music] online distance learning or uh remote learning or remote then parents you'll be able to know exactly what will be my role uh to my kids education this year okay that would depend on the modality that's going to be used by your school okay so what are your schools doing right now and ginago anila to prepare for this educational shift okay um first of course um for the those who are preparing online distance learning setting up of learning management system in order to gather the learning activities in one space plus you're also putting the community of learners in one space allowing them to interact with each other okay you also have capacity building for the use of online tools like for example in our school we have been training to use different tools in order to carry out online distance learning plus we're also developing our modules okay if you're doing remote learning then you have capacity building for use of online tools and module development okay while for the remote study capacity building for designing and creating modules and module production okay so you know in different system um activities among schools not then this time okay all right now what are now required of the learners okay so um again focus the learners okay so as parents uh we should know this because uh by knowing knowing so what exactly is required and from our learners from our kids from our children uh we'll be able to assist them um more efficiently i think okay of course that's the first one is organizational skills our kids and children will be tested in terms of organizing the many tasks or the temptation to procrastinate their tasks so that our students now should learn how to list down their tasks how to schedule their tasks how to manage their time because um before they know it their tasks and requirements and assessments could easily pile up and they'll not be able to catch up okay because of the overwhelming amount of uh of activities okay um uh parents know um teachers and schools are very much aware that we are not supposed to give too much activities that's going going to it up that and require our students to look at the screen for a length uh lengthy amount of time um for the students if they fail to accomplish their tasks in a given time that could easily blow up and before they know it they'll not be able to manage their their activities okay diligence okay in connection to organizational skills is being diligent on their activities okay so telugu making sure that they do what they need to do because there's that is temptation of um of not doing it because it one it might not be required or not graded two no one's watching me so uh should i do this or should i not do this so we should um learners should develop that intrinsic motivation that despite of the absence of that um of maybe the presence of the teacher okay the physical press and the teacher to motivate them um they should motivate themselves um so that they could actually perform the task they they need to perform for each module resilience okay um it it's going to be a little hard okay definitely it's going to take adjustments okay um also they will encounter difficulties along the way so it's the resilience of the students will be tested and if they um go through with it okay and persevere you know uh they would actually be more resilient after this okay um i see a group of independent learners by 2021 that's that's the beauty of this setup right now uh we'll we'll be encountering difficulties our students will have a hard time parents will be challenged teachers are now being challenged actually but at the end of this year i'm excited that we're going to have an entire generation of independent learners who are able and capable of managing learning on their own just imagine that by 2021 we could actually have school days at home okay because we are confident we have developed that skills um um within them okay and of course uh independence the thing is important reminder for our parents uh that our students are your kids your children will need to develop that independence in taking on their and owning their own learning experiences um so while we support our kids and we fear failure for them um that's going to be part of the experience this year okay so uh mamia will discuss in details know you um uh more practical tips in developing uh independent learners okay so content will not be the only focus this year okay more than ever the development of skills will play an integral part okay so this will be um one of the shifts as well in education okay that's why we're doing content auditing because we're now going to focus more on um the skills okay and competencies of our students which are more long-term i think no i say uh you know sometimes the topic sometimes can't be applied in real life on a particular skill or competency the topic now becomes more meaningful becomes more authentic in a way okay okay so these are some of the benefits of distance learning um it's more like flexible okay because in modules okay there's no time okay so the students does not have like um a schedule to follow okay so if it's begin they can do their moodle um um their own time okay their own pace okay uh because most of the modules are asynchronous okay um done by the students in different times okay um easy access yes as long as you have your online platforms if it's printed if you give them a printed form of emojis they will have access to it and generally no it should less cost should cost less for our parents as well and for uh for the schools okay okay now let's go to um our parents role okay so i call it reframing no uh reframing because arose naman have not changed really in distance learning okay most of our roles are the same okay but um what what we have to do now is to reframe our roles as parents and to begin we have to look at it in a different perspective okay so the usual things um should be emphasized maybe um the usual things that god should be highlighted or be more consistent about it okay so it's really just reframing our roles because parents roles um and support has always been um there okay and i think there's no better way to start um understanding parents role than a statement from dr quinn ali chua in one of the webinars we attended as part of our training in my school as well okay uh in ateneo okay um he said okay that it's not the role of the parent to teach the content okay because it's this at the beginning of um apparently education we were discussing about pursuing the education and um uh not uh continuing with the education this year and um pursuing modular format okay my parents okay and that will be an additional burden to all of us okay and of course okay that's also inferno um asking parents to teach the content because it would take a lot okay teachers trained for four years five years just to master a particular content and how to teach it okay that's a different span of knowing the content and how to teach it are two entirely different things okay so we do not expect that from the parents okay uh parents your role is to help teach good study skills parents don't have to know the content but they have to support the child so that um the child can learn the content on his on his or her own okay it's again we go back to the idea of independent learners okay independent learning okay so an expectation from the parents is to provide a support so that independent learning could actually happen okay now um as we reframe our roles okay so these are sam no okay mommy has in our live ballroom okay we'll be able to touch more on based on your experiences but these are just some um expectations or reframe roles of the parents okay so the first one is that monetary science progress and activities okay so this will be a key important tasks of the parents because um and this but this should not go on for like a long time especially for um older learners um what we propose is a more progressive approach to this we're in on the first maybe quarter or maybe trimester or semester um please do uh have um a way to monitor your son's progress okay do check their activities uh do check their their grades and their their tasks um so that you would know if they're actually progressing well okay given this now given this um um role you would actually be able to help the the student um by allowing um them to know where they should improve let's say for example um problems a progression student or of your child of your um of your kid then you'll be able to immediately intervene by communicating it with with their teachers or with their school okay so you meeting roles okay so um on how exactly we can do this now communicate to the school and teachers learn for the younger learners okay they will not have an initiative or sometimes even um um um a desire to do this okay so it's our parents role to communicate with the school okay so know the the policies of the schools know the conditions for the schools know the expectations from the school um if you have problems at home uh connectivity devices um set up do communicate that with the school okay not that the school will change everything for you or not that the school will um provide the things that you need no it's more of like letting the school know what your limit limitations are so that they could actually adjust okay or um um modify some of the parts in order to include you just say schools and teachers we want to include as many learners as possible in our setup okay and of course uh support for material and technical needs especially for those who are doing or going to do online distance learning okay you'll definitely need to do uh or to have um devices okay and um study area okay so uh requirements then technical and material requirements should be provided by the parents and that would allow uh the learner to actually engage in distance learning okay confidently okay have been considering that all forms of online distance learning should have a mobile or tablet compatibility so um uh tools and devices um approaches should actually be used using a tablet or a mobile phone because we have most of us have have mobile phones already or tablets okay and of course support for emotional well-being i think is one of the most important parents we should also realize that while we are stressed by the situation of the pandemic we also have to realize that our kids are under the same pressure conditions so mixed begin whatever we are experiencing if we are stressed if we are bothered if we are unanxious our students are most likely in the same situation so supporting your kids emotional well-being uh will be uh uh an important role of the parents uh in this shift to education okay okay so now um let's go to some practical tips right so going among our parents our first practical tip is that establish routines and habits okay max is starting upon classes okay um we have like less than one month okay more or less okay especially for those who are in other private schools uh for the public schools you still have like uh at least one month okay but as early as now i suggest you create routines and habits already that would allow your your kids to ease in much more smoothly into distance learning okay so one these are some practical tips one you can set a study area or space does not need to be too big no um just find a space in your living room in your in your room uh or even outside uh for example our workspace at home is outside of our our home in the garage it's as long as that's a dedicated space okay why because while we are um in a digital space for learning we want to create that physical space wherein it would simulate that feeling of being in a classroom well i mean it was a classroom i would have that usual familiar feeling of being in a contained space where i'm learning okay and also you have um set consistent and irregular study time so that miranda scheduling um wake up early 7 a.m or 8 a.m by 9 00 a.m you're ready do your study time or for those who are working parents nah working from 8 a.m to um 4 p.m then maybe you'd like to set up your study time as like 5 pm or 6 pm um so you could do the tasks with your kids or monitor them while they're doing their tasks especially those asynchronous tasks given by the school okay impose discipline at home especially the screen time okay um we do not want uh the down time to be a screen time okay uh purposes this year okay so be informed when are the synchronous session of your kids teachers for a synchronous meeting these are meetings using like for example video conferencing tools like zoom or google me or ms teams meetings or those who are also using messenger or whatever video conferencing you will know make sure that they do not spend too much time beyond okay those synchronous sessions okay it would also hurt their health of course number one and plus um hindi no mentality required lagging screen time okay so padding for example the worksheets have been downloaded already or printed already so they can do that okay so things like that so impose discipline okay um distance does not mean more screen time okay that's one of the clarifications we have them okay okay um second is um get help okay so nothing too long parents okay we are um in different boats definitely but we're in the same storm so it means that more or less your experiences are shared to other parents as well okay so uh do know where to connect uh get help okay so know your school's communication lines for specific needs um now in our school we have been setting up hotlines uh where parents could call where students could call regarding for example technical problems emotional problems so know those lines so that when there's a problem you could immediately attend to it and ask for help will be on your burden okay uh the schools um have set up um helplines in order to help you as well okay um communicate difficulties and challenges you foresee or are experiencing it's important for us because uh schools and teachers cannot guess your conditions okay um and again this is not about um we're solving your problems okay uh it's about let's help each other solve your problem okay if there's a need to adjust on certain areas we will do that okay um but uh the important thing here is that let us know okay teachers and schools let us know your conditions and challenges so that if there's something that could be done we're actually going to be able to do something about it and lastly build or join groups as a support group i think the bible groups will be most essential this year okay but of course parents know you'll have to pick properly because uh it could also mean um uh we also don't want um uh to be the mama carolina um too much engagement with so many groups okay so choose your groups where you will benefit from if it's not beneficial go out of that okay um if you are actually one of an active one of the active parents who are willing to help and build groups and to build a group and help other parents okay and um there is that we have okay use a progressive approach let's not force them right away okay we have to all remember that there's no precedent whatsoever on this situation it means that if we are not prepared as parents our kids are most likely in the same situation it means that they are also not prepared for distance learning so they are also learning on the fly so let's not be frustrated if they can't get it on the first try or there are problems in the first semester or in the first quarter what's important is that we're learning from it okay so progressively um sustain your assistance them be more consistent and as you go through siguro second quarter or second trimester slowly um reduce the assistance and allow your kids to flourish independently in distance learning okay so let your kids own their their learning process mistakes errors or failures as learning experiences rather something to be punished about help your kids develop confidence more than ever as they take on distance learning which is also a different terrain for them we have to let them know that they can actually do it and we cannot do it by forcing them on the first day of online distance learning okay so let's let's take it in a gradual progressive approach okay and lastly okay is to maintain balance across different areas of development um tendency known that we're still we're just at home to just focus on and that's going to be detrimental to our students schools have been long um focusing on the the different areas of the students okay so it's important for for us to make sure that we keep on developing the students as holistic as possible okay it means we manage stress at home okay uh again parents if you're stressed your kids are more most likely stressed as well they don't know what's happening they're also anxious they can't show it okay um you're lucky we're adults can actually have we have more capacity for expression of our anxiety but for our kids um who knows they might be hiding it so we have to help them manage their uh their feelings were their actions okay and do is example explore new activities new new hobbies um involve your your kids in doing some things um just to um take their attention away from a while from education for um like activities or science explore more vending time okay something that would comfort them emotionally okay keep the kids active okay so exercise at home okay um let them play okay so allow them in the garage okay no need to like allow them into the streets but at least in the garage okay um play with them yeah it's important to keep them active as well because that physical body would would be staying at home for a long time so we do not want to be inactive for that length of time allow expression and discussion of what's happening of course this would depend on the the the level the age of your your kids and your children but um there are ways to talk to them okay in developmental um developmental considerations but the idea is that you have to involve them um and understanding what's happening and what's going to happen so that they have that more understanding of the situation allow um and in that way society and because we we know if they keep on hiding it um stress level amongst my kids and children at them okay connect safely with friends okay um it's not that um because there's no opportunity to be outside or engage in a physical activity but like setting up like meetings with their classmates their friends would actually help them okay we usually for example in our in my case you know we uh talk to other parents and uh schedule like a zoom meeting or a google meet meeting uh where we're in the the student that makes our kids we just simply talk about random things in a structured manner okay so we just let them for 20 30 minutes uh talking to each other okay so that connection also allows them to um be at uh at peace with their uh emotions okay so these are some again practical tips okay but uh of course there are more okay so now i'm going to go to the more practical side of distance learning okay um it has been um a reality that we have to find in order to carry out distance learning we have to find um ways in tools okay to help us and i think um for those who are um pursuing online distance learning google for education tools will allow that to happen okay so for the parents who will be enrolled in schools using google tools this is for you okay this will be a walk through an overview of the tools offered by google and how they can be used in the classroom okay so in order to help us um i clustered them um into four areas okay so the the four c's of 21st century learning so you have collaboration so you have tools for communication you also have tools for creativity and also tools for critical thinking so um this will be the focus of uh this also this will be the four key skills that will also be developing among our kids into this um distance learning okay so for um tools for creativity okay so what what google tools can we use for that okay so i can recommend three no okay and when we look when you say creativity these are trying new approaches to get new things done to get things done equals innovation and invention that's according to leonard okay and these are some of the tools offered by google in order to develop creativity google drawing google earth uh google maps google drawing basically it's you can create graphics in it uh google earth you can explore places um digitally or online and of course google maps um almost same thing as uh google earth okay you also have tools for um communication of course okay um of course google was built okay in order to link people um to each other get to information okay so tools for me for communication is actually at the heart of google development okay so you have basic communication in that thought strategy solutions and you have several tools to use for that okay so you have of course google classroom will have a quick uh walkthrough of google classroom in a while uh google me okay google google groups as well and of course you have your gmail okay are actually used for um for communication okay so it's a more accessible secured communication lines for our students and of course you have tools for critical thinking you are looking for a if you're um you're saying critical thinking it's about looking at problem in a new way and linking learning across subjects and discipline okay so what are tools what tools can we use for critical thinking we have um these following tools there are a lot of tools we can use for um critical thinking we have a google scholar google books for those whose children or kids are already at senior high or maybe in the university um google scholar and google booths are are really good tools to help them with okay google scholar is actually a database of articles and google books or collections online or buy online uh these ones um are for kids no um google expedition is a virtual reality app okay if you download that it's going to bring you to virtual reality um places or items and you can actually explore it at your um at the comfort of your homes google science journal is for experimentation you want to carry out experiments and if you want your kids to or your children or your students to record them you can use google science journal and of course google translate is a good tool for teaching language as well you also have google forms google meet and google groups in order to provide them with multiple and varied perspectives about certain topics or concepts you also have tools for collaboration you are working together to reach a goal putting talents expertise and smarts to work and these are your tools for collaboration okay we also have a lot no uh i think that's one of the advantages of google tools because the tools uh can communicate with each other uh and collaboration is um very much part of the google education tools so of course you have your productivity tools you have your google slides that's your for presentations uh google docs google forms and jamboard google docs basically is your microsoft word document version google forms is for collecting data and jamboard is for your interactive whiteboard okay and whatever you create there parents teachers and students will all be stored in your google drive which is a cloud-based storage okay you also have google meet google calendar google chat google classroom for integrated communication system because this tools are integrated with each other we'll see that later when we have a demo for google classroom okay so now i'll take you quickly parents and students okay into a quick demonstration of a class and how you can navigate within google classroom okay um so now i'm here um in my teacher's um perspective okay so let's just okay so now um i'm showing you my class now okay um for those parents who would like to try some activities in google classroom you may um enroll into this um class okay and try out the activities here although the activities here are not as developed because we only use it for demonstration okay so you may um copy this class code uh when you join your classes you'll be asked of that class code so this is a free for all open class where you can try the activities and you can like practice and see how google classroom works okay so let's now go to my student view okay so this is now a student enrolled into the class i showed you earlier okay so you have the class sample okay so for the students okay a very quick um walk through so on the left side you have the list of your classes i only have one class right now so that's the class sample you have um three buttons on top that's your stream classwork and people in the stream you will see all the posts made by your teacher or by other students okay in the classwork you will see all your activities posted by your teacher okay so for example here uh module one has been posted already and these are all the activities um that i need to do as a student provided by the teacher when you click on this viewwork it will show you all the works that you need to do and plus you are going to be informed if you're actually missing that requirement so you can see it in a bold red color font missing okay so you'll be able to easily see that you haven't submitted that requirement okay now we'll go back to our classwork okay so uh in people you'll be asked to uh you you not you'll see all the students and the teacher in that class for example i have um one two three um students right now in my in my class okay so let's go into but you you won't see all their contacts okay so and their grades as well okay so that's uh for privacy okay so let's now go to your classwork there are also other um two other buttons on top of your classwork you have google calendar and class drive folder google calendar is integrated into the google that's a really good thing because whatever is posted in your google classroom will actually be posted in your google calendar which means that you can actually see the schedule of the class in one space and it um google calendar will remind you via email if you have activated the notifications in your laptop or in your cell phones it will also send you a notification something's coming up in your class drive folder you can store all your activities all your works um in that folder while you're working on it it means that if the work is not have not yet been submitted it will be stored okay okay so let's um take one assessment and let's just quickly um demo how to do so for example um i was assigned with this worksheet okay rubrics okay so parents if you're guiding your kids um the rubric actually is an important um reference how the assessment will be checked by the teacher by the teacher okay so do check the rubric so you would know how the teacher will check the assessment and you also have um the google document assigned to your kid okay so you click on the view assignment so you would see the details of the assignment you would see here you would see the points assigned to it okay you would see when it was due it was you long time ago because i made this a month ago almost a month ago okay and you would see here the rubric that should be the rubric it's uh incomplete but that's how the rubric would look like okay now this is now your work okay so what you do is to um click on that document and um edit it accordingly so based on the demands of the assessment okay all right so for example here the task [Music] is and then once done okay always remember okay all assessments okay for parents and for the students to always um check on turn in that's the only time your assessments are pushed to the teacher's folder for submission and if you do not click on that even if you're done with your work you won't be able to submit or your work has not been submitted okay but while you're working on it and you haven't um in your work you can actually work expect this a good document uh no need for saving as long as you're online uh google document automatically saves your work and you can go back to it anytime as you prefer okay once you're done for example you're done already and you want to submit it so either you turn it in inside the google document or you click on this button turn it in so let's just click on that okay and then confirm it turn it in now you have submitted your uh the work okay so that's remind your kids okay um to do that whenever they submit requirements by google classroom parents as well um as your teachers if they're using google classroom they can actually update what they call guardian size it means that the teacher activated the guardian summaries of the class you would receive or you should receive um summaries of the grades and activities of your kid um once um once a month okay or a periodically okay um and that would allow you to see the progress of your kids uh in google classroom okay so actually that's a very quick demo if you would like to have a more in-depth uh look at the google classroom you may um you may look at our youtube channel we have um tutorials and um guides uh in using google classroom okay so um i think that's the end of our our my discussion okay again sorry for the lengthy discussion because we have to repeat it from from the start and i'd like to welcome back um uh the the heads from pillar tutorials uh for us to open them the forum okay welcome welcome back uh miss janice um dear parents uh audience can now will pick some questions so please do uh put your questions um in the live chat so we could address them okay and uh we'll be discussing the the your question okay but uh before we do that while we were waiting for the questions miss ann and miss janice um do you want to add some things um for the parents um to have or what what can you share to our parents okay so that they'll be more prepared in um in helping or supporting their kids for online distance learning yes um actually i was listening earlier met joe sobrang i agree when you said nah parents there's some most parents i have a lot of friends nah dino martin in the expect what happened in this situation so a lot were like shocked so i don't see that i don't know i cannot teach i don't know what to teach you have to make sure that your children get uh well rested get enough sleep eat proper food wake up in the morning complete sleep basically um they have this like iphone tablet or any phones distance learning so [Music] nothing to worry about like what they are feeling right now yes or it's also about like in a way i agree miss i know and also uh partners would be the acceptance that it will not be perfect all of us were caught off guard by the situation so i think it's more of like really the acceptance um and accepting the challenge no of the distance learning yes that's right one distance learning what do you think the uh miss janice i think we also have to take heart that the schools are doing everything that they can to ensure that whatever they prescribe and create will be approved yet for the age and the grade level enough faith that the school will be able to create content and present it in a way that will be palatable and that will be appealing to great ones to dance yeah more on a more practical note one thing that i noticed was a great one if it's a great one's online distance learning i would personally choose a tablet over a laptop for them to navigate something that's touchscreen so i play your mobile phone that touch me it's that it's just that the mobile phone is a little bit small in screen pero if you had a choice between a tablet and a laptop i would suggest you use a tablet for drink one parameter we were trained to do that we have been doing that for the longest time we have again the only thing is that we're reframing the rules okay but we're not really changing them and uh drastically young girls and teachers now parents for this distance learning our next question is on accessibility stable internet connection um in terms of sharing devices okay we have to realize that not all synchronous sessions are happening at the same time indeed uh student one should be online at the same student too because that's exactly what modular format is it allows you to do it um um using your own time or in your own time so in the schedule so for example see child one uses the cell phone in the morning and see child 2 uses it in the afternoon so modules learning activities as i mentioned to you earlier in the discussion the formats are designed in order to be delivered by a mobile or in a tablet so that that should be more than enough um accessibility again the dang siguris that communicate with your school but they understand your situation and the school could somehow adjust for example deadlines okay example alumni oasis student from this home has problems with accessibility baja wedding after two days in again it's about communication letting them know okay um know the options offered by your children alternative options like there are some schools to offer online distance learning or you could choose the learning packet for example if you have more than one child in the household and there's that possibility different options so you can you could also explore that um this one from miss miss or sir joe cantero how the teacher can instruct parents without educational attainment in guiding their children in doing such things in terms of modularity in distance learning maybe you can uh you like to address that i am connected if please correct me if i'm wrong i understand this but i'm connected the man will be coming from the teacher right from the from the school the best so but i've got it like then so more most likely like school setting city tournament would tell the parents that our mommy this is what um your child is doing dino menacing that you need to teach the this content the specific content you're trying to get out it's more like an update [Music] um social science so perspective okay and um again we are not as teachers we're not passing the the the burden of teaching because the way we're going to design our modules should be um should allow your kids to actually perform the tasks and activities acquire the knowledge acquire the skills on their own support we are not the parents are not replacing the teachers in this setup okay yes and i'm sorry naman if you ask the teacher [Music] they will give information you go to this kirito mommy you can check on this one where they don't help or they begin the legacy i imagine that the biggest support that the parent can give online distance learning that is the technical support now make sure that the hardware is available and the software is ready technical difficulties you are available to help especially for the younger kids as a teacher i can imagine that that balloon would be a tremendous amount of support already as much as we can so we'll extend a little bit and we'll answer us uh suguru around three to four questions but uh just to end our forum um from miss clary vick vidayas that's true but the problem in our school doesn't allow us to use the tablets even as teachers all tablets are just kept and besides no internet connection in school um miss claravik i think given this that's why um when the schools plan for their distance training we have to situate it and contextualize it we cannot also keep the parents hanging and um not knowing what's going to happen that's the worst thing that the parents uh would go through exactly what's going to happen you know how the school will approach the education so we have to be honest to them so internet will happen and i think again as i mentioned earlier um the printed modules while it has some limitations um still uh a very good efficient tool for distance learning so indeed or in the pusha like less of any form or approach to distance learning okay um we'd like to add our pedophile and proceed to our next question okay from sir john john rivera what is best upgrade instead of online learning this conviction is based on my assessment to the capability of the child thank you very much very technical actually um regardless of what your modalities online distance learning online learning you'll have to deliver it efficiently in a modular format okay so um if you're doing online learning online distance learning into modular format okay and how do we convince our parents we have to let them know that it's uh the most efficient approach to distance learning to package the content in order for the students to actually perform the content on their own a self-contained learning package and again i don't think we have any other choice yes we have a vaccine by next month that's the only thing that's going to change the things okay so but um it's 1.5 years uh in the making so we do not expect that anytime soon another thing if i understand the question correctly it's how to convince a parent to choose modules over online distance learning how do i convince the parent to choose noodles over online and um of course it should be clear why you want to convince the parent no you take your cue from the child you take your cue from the child but maybe not necessarily on the basis of ability and no matter what platform or what format it takes the student should be able to consume the content in the same way let's say for example the student has some you know if the student has some difficulty coping online my son is actually one of those kids but he feels weird with this thing he feels weird seeing his classmates online and if that's the case that to me is a compelling point because i will never advise parents to force their kids to go to an online class especially the very young kids if they are not comfortable with it because it could have long lasting adverse effects on the child agree like it's a comment actually pero it's connected to the question number miss claridic vidayas uh to marry my parents and complain um on the use of um of the modules um i one solution that i think i think of parallel must convince that in parents for those printed modules is that i like example that i made a week ago july the students and even the parents on how to use the modules because sometimes overwhelming one activity like intro or even in excellent and equip on how do i use this module or um who do i ask uh about this module if i have a question so by the time i gain a communication lines uh in order to clarify supply and sort like my faqs do some modulating it's really a self-contained um tool okay so just to answer that question uh yes uh miss clary vick no mere we have it's the teachers who really have to create the modules why because one uh the the the teachers are the experts in the content so approaching content and approach activities and um in terms of approach and strategies the teachers are more aware and trained to actually do it okay okay um i think last question last question i think it's most are now thank yous afternoon from our audience uh yes welcome timpo for being with us today um last message long from the the pillars um tutorial center before we end come miss chinese we have like a final message the bottom line is you are not alone not to the parents that's the overlaying message and we are here to help in anything again which is also why we come up with forums like this um there are a lot of ways that we can support the student who is going through online distance learning and if the parents would like to outsource some part of the support then there are companies like winners tutorials who are very much willing and capable of providing that kind of support in fact right now you know a lot of our students have enrolled because they want to practice online learning they say because it's new simply because it's new and they've never done it before a few weeks before classes they come in but they can actually get an experience of talking to a teacher learning a lesson online and once they have gone through several sessions and parents because they have seen for themselves that my child can survive online distance learning my child can enjoy his sessions my child can actually learn the last one and my child can actually do the tasks that have been assigned to them that in itself is a big confidence booster and because our kids really take their cue from us we are being more positive about online distance learning then it will also follow they will also feel positive about it whatever you are not alone there are lots of companies like pillars tutorials that are willing to help and i'm sure you ma are going beyond their i know like for us uh we understand we feel we are all mothers here so we feel only human concerns um online interaction with teachers so get on if you put them into a tutorial center like us so how do we do it well do we just focus on that no with with asthma we are willing to help we also communicate and we also work with parents your child now are doing great with the this with this homework [Music] school center anything it has to be a good partnership with you online yes i agree with miss janice and miss miss i know especially to peeler's tutorial is created and built by parents so also for the parents so very sensitive to some needs among students and instrumental parents nothing so i really encourage you to take it um take a look and um give it a try uh we have the details here um being shown we have the we have a page uh petershaw.ph and facebook um they also you can also contact them so you can um send them a bible sms or via instagram okay so do um inquire okay so again they're online okay so regardless where you are okay so metro manila or online they can actually um cater with your your needs for distance learning it's a good thing no especially as they we prepare for distance learning okay so um for having us um miss the pillars tutorial center for uh having the teacher support here in helping the parents um navigate and be more equipped for distance learning okay before secret time again for those who are asking um because this is uh our usual we give certificates for our webinars but this is a parents forum so we do not provide uh certificates so there's also no evaluation it's really just help or assistance to parents okay so we only give once for for the webinar types and uh programs now and so it for being with us here and um good luck to all of us to the teachers the parents okay um always remember you are not alone as said by miss anne and miss janice so thank you thank you francois thank you grandpa you
