hi my name is Pam Clark and today I'm going to share with you on how to do simple borders and keeping them nice and even even doing your free motion quilting we'll be using this borderline book right here it has between 60 and 70 designs in there and I'll be drawing a few of these up for you um you're going to be amazed how simple this is I also have my straight line stencils they come in five different sizes there's a 1 a 1 and a 1/2 a 2 a 2 and a half and a 3 I will be showing you how to do dead-end corners and of collision borders uh this is going to make it so simple for you I'm and again the 5 different sizes I have to explain to you is because your borders are all going to be different sizes so just one stencil is not going to do and this all comes in a kit which is available through Linda's electric cultures and what I'd like to do is I'm going to go over to my table I'm going to draw these up for you alright so you can see how simple it is and how to mark your borders and then I will explain to you about directional and non-directional borders as well so let's go ahead and get started and once I've drawn them up then I'm adored the cooking machine and I'll stitch it up for you alright all right let me let's go ahead and get started we'll talk about the different types of borders um I also forgot to mention that I do have this straight line book here and that has about twenty different designs in there for especially if you're a beginner this is a really easy book to start with um both books are great um this was just called my straight line stencil book because it comes um usually sell to the beginners and it's very simple they're not hard designs where this one here is going to be a little more advanced so I just wanted to mention that to you all right but let's talk about the different kind of borders there are and I'm sorry have a little bit of a shadow in there so get this up a little closer alright um this one this is out of my fearless beginning book and the first and the easiest border to do is called the collision alright and that's this one right here and what I like to do is if it's just a feather like this or something that I can't get the thing the border to go around really when I first started machine quilting it was very difficult for me and so doing a collision and what I mean by a collision that doesn't mean that you just run it right on top of each other this could be your seam right here so you will start there or actually on the other side here you start and go all the way across to the end okay and after you have all the rest of your quilt quilted I didn't take it off and I turn it or rotate the quilt and I go this way with it I do try to get them to go like around the whole quilt though that's a very very simple one to do now something like this one right here is going to be a little more difficult to do alright because this one um I use a pre-cut stencil and you want to make sure that you actually measure from the center and then go all the way out like that the next one is called the dead in corners right here the Dedinje border and that's probably easier the dude and then the collision and so what you want to do is I take this and this could be my seam and then I stitch in the ditch there I actually create a little block you might even have a quilt that actually has a separate um block there or you could even if you're piecing your own you could do the same thing alright and you're going to kind of treat it like the collision all right you're going to take it in you just stop at that seam or that ditch line there and then you create another style ours to another design right in here all right so let's go ahead now I'll draw a couple of these designs up for you so you can see how simple it is I'll show you how to mark it all right and I'm going to be using a piece of glass over the top of a quilt but you could use I'm a plastic sheet protector or Anna um and a dry erase pen all right you can do the same thing or you can use a piece of clear vinyl to pray for you preview your quilting before you get started all right I'm going to show you how to mark this now on the lay the stencil down and then I'll show you how to do a little fudging if the if the lines don't line up exactly and your um on your border so you lay this down you have one line right here you want to line it up just pretend like this is your outside edge or it could be a scene all right and then if you look over here you can kind of see it's off just a little bit I'm going to use a pounce pad I'm going to take it and I always just Pat it like this to make sure the chalk is in there and I'm gonna go ahead and do a scrubbing motion across this I'm gonna try to keep my hands out of the camera it's best I can just like so now if you're off just a little bit like right here you could kind of fudge it back in like so I'll show you here I'll do this one and then you can just kind of fudge it in like that all right but I'm just going to go ahead it's not really enough to worry about so there we go looks like this and I've got my lines drawing up like that for you all right so I'll go ahead and draw these up for you again I'm going to put a piece of glass over the top of it I have a dry erase and a piece of batting from eraser so you can easily preview your quilting and practice doing that all right now I'm going to show you a border that is out of my straight line book this one right here this one right there okay and this one is directional so you do need to know and be aware of directional and this you would use on your outside borders or maybe a roundup around a block but not in your sashing and it's every other one you start right here I try to keep my hand out of the way start right here up then hit up here put that heart shape there to this one up to here there this one up back there one back and forth all right that was simple all right I'm at my machine now long and I'm going to stitch up that first design that I did for you it was the clamshell and the heart and then I came back with a reverse so it looks like this remember it's every other one and then thing I didn't talk to you about is when we do this you do need to have it divisible by two that's not the only thing you have to remember up to here use the horse face up and if you look ahead especially when you're doing this time chess will be a lot smoother and bath and then I'm going to reverse it all the way and done all right the next design I'm going to do for you is called orange pill and this is just a fun one to do I do it in my modern quilts I can do it really small really what it is is just a clamshell and if you think about it this is I mark the one-inch lines and this is a two-inch a space right here so you want to go half way it's basically a half a circle so you start right here I'll try to keep my hand out of the way to that one two there and if you look ahead when you're driving this on your machine you're going to be a lot smoother I'm going to come back to the other side because most of us when we're brand-new we're going to stitch better from left to right then right to left even though I can go in both directions so now this one's going to come here like this to this one up to here to that one to here back and finish now I can reverse this now and come back and what I want to do is I want to start here to this point to here that one to there that one and finish now what's really important is that when you do this I want you to make sure that you could hit here even if you're a little bit off you want those to match to this one now this was a two inch border and I could get two in here so that is a non-directional border that means you can use this anywhere in your quilt but let's say it was a three inch one and I put another one on top of it then it would spin it's going to make it directional alright the next one we're going to be doing is the orange pill and remember it's every other one and I'm going to come back to the other side um up you don't have to but if you're a new beginner you're going to you're going to stitch so much better if you go from left to right and right to left but after a while you've been doing this you'll be able to go in both directions so don't get too upset about if you can't do it all right so remember it's still the clamshell okay and basically um it's if I like this shell right here we're doing we're going to be doing a reverse so I'm going to go every other one and is a two inch strip so and this is the 1 inch line so remember you want to go up halfway all right um you can also come back this way with it like this and up to here you're going to come down to here get it to that one so you can do it the way that I drew it up for you or you can work backwards like I just did but like I said you're not very comfortable with it then I would suggest to chew on the back to the left and now you have orange pill now I'm going to show you something where I made a mistake right there remember I talked to you a little bit about I know if I can zoom it in there a little bit right in here I didn't connect that very well even if you're off just a little bit this you want these to line up like this okay just like that all right I'm going to show you how to mark and do this design right here now when you look at this one this is the directional one because they're not equal if you want to not be non directional then then you're going to divide us a line right through the middle but I'm going to make this as a non directional one and this could also be um this could be two borders alright this could be like a red this could be a blue so you wouldn't have to mark anything on your borders for that so what I did is I will leave my stencil down and I chalked a line right here like so alright and then I'm going to put my glass over the top and I'll show you how to do this okay go like this and I'm using swirls but you could use hearts you can use feathers you can use loops and up to this one alright to here swirl I do my outside of my swirls first back up to this one here do that one and even though in the book is showing swirls on top you could change it and do something totally different but I'm going to do the squirrels because that's what's in the book I'll come down like this and then almost touching it like that back to here back to this one here again this could be two different borders I've even been known to do three four up the quilt here back to here this one that one now I'm going to quote this one up for you here back and finish and I didn't um tell you but in the books in the borderline books alright um you're going to find they're going to give you corner ideas alright um some of these are controlled this one right here is the collision alright then I talked about earlier okay um this one is a control because it takes you all the way around alright and something like this border right here again it's it is directional so this is your public and uses on the outside your corners are your borders but you're going to either this could be two different fabric pieces strips or this could be like a six inch border and you take the three-inch line stencil and you mark it through this Center like that for your guide just like I did on this one right here alright here's that one pattern where I marked I had this was a three inch and I marked the vertical and then a horizontal but like I said this could also be two different on two different borders you wouldn't have to chop that in if you had like this could be a red and this could be a blue so here we go into here and I'm working in a pretty small space so I have to keep my um my speed down to here back remember I'm doing the swirls on the outside back to here and you notice how I hesitate in most points to get a nice sharp light this one here there's so many things you can do with these line stencils I'll show you something when I'm done with this that I'd live i braided it out which I like squares so if you hear now this one's going to come up to here the mop for that one here took their hesitate at those points this one but again this is a directional border all right if you wanted to be my own directional then you would divide it equally in half I put the 1 and a half inch line stencil enough down the center then you can use it anywhere in your club this one is going to be like on the outside round the outside borders at there and back now I want you to notice something we move this gene out right all right in this space in here right in there you can also add another shape in there but you would do it as you're going all right you don't want to do it once you're finished so let's say you were working in a four or five inch on border and your spacing was a little wider but you didn't want this much as soon as you're in here doing this you're going to come in and you can do a little loop all right before you complete it so you would come up here like here up do your swirl add a loop out all right so let me show you something real quick like I'm gonna roll this machine you should be able to see it look at the camera here all right this one right here on this make a great pattern too and what I did is I just took the one inch over one and a half inch line stencils and I gritted it out into boxes and then that gives me my registration watch to do this so this would also make a great border and it's really a non directional border as well before I show you some quotes on with the borders in them that I quilted in there I should tell you how to get the chalk out of the off your quilt and I talked about this in all my tutorials but this is the greatest product ever it is called so clean alright it's an all-natural product and what I do is I use it on a wet sponge like so I spray it like so and then I rub it across the quilt and that takes my chopper that's all you need to do and once it's dry the chalk is gone and it's all natural so you can leave it on the quilt it's not like if you're putting a detergent on the quilt all right it's a great product it also takes out blood it takes out grease marks I use it on my carpets and again it's called so clean it looks like this this is a modern quilt that I put together for some class samples and stuff but right here you can see I did the orange peel I'm all kinds of different ways that you can do this all right and you can use those um stencils on the diagonal it doesn't just have to be um straight so all kinds of different borders that I grid it out all right here's a little clamshell let me back it up so you can see the whole thing alright and I'll show you another one this is the vintage red work quilt and um as you can see the crosshatch chain I use the one inch line stencils through that alright and I stitch right through the embroidery all right and this just gives it that old um traditional look and you can see in the sashing I just did like a little like little loops almost again those are like one inch one inch lines all right here's the border so gridded in that out and all of this had that blue chalk on there alright this I did wash out but I did use it was so clean so I just wanted to give you an idea how it looks how easy it is alright this is the little doll blanket I made for one of my granddaughters and I just crosshatch all the way through the embroidery again I did this on my domestic machine I just go from corner to corner and I use the one inch line stencil on this one as well this is a little wall hanging that I teach in my fear my easy elegant border class so this will kind of give you a couple ideas what's in that sketchbook a lot of these designs are in that sketchbook so I'll just pan down just a little bit so you can kind of get some ideas let's see how nice and even they stay because you're using those registration lines to keep everything nice and even well I hope you like this tutorial thank you for letting me share this time with you and keep watching I'll be doing more in the near future thank you for letting me show you time
