this video contains an ad for squarespace [Music] it's me martina lately i've seen this concept floating around on the internet where people paint fish yes fish specifically on several layers of epoxy resin to create like a 3d effect so it ends up just looking super realistic and so i thought okay this is real cool uh could you do it with something else than fish i don't know i haven't seen it done yet so i'm gonna try to fix that either that or prove that it really doesn't work with anything other than painting fish what i want to try to create is a fantasy landscape painting using epoxy resin to separate all my layers so you have the background on one layer foreground on another you get the gist i don't actually know if this is going to create the effect i'm hoping for but i guess we'll soon find out first of all i have to plan my painting in much more detail than what i usually would because once i pour the epoxy i can't go back and change anything so if i want to switch up the background i can't do that so i'm going to plan each of my layers carefully and i'm gonna use photoshop to do that i'm gonna make a proper sketch and figure out the composition the lighting everything for each layer before we begin so let's dive into photoshop and make a sketch [Music] okay i finally decided on a composition and a color palette and i think i managed to plan out my layers fairly well i think this can turn out pretty cool and now i'm just gonna make a mold that i'm gonna pour the first layer of epoxy resin into and i'm just gonna paint directly on top of that let's go to the basement i have this dense foam board that i want to make the mold out of so i'm just going to cut a large square for the bottom piece and then a couple of sides that i'm going to glue together let's drop [Music] [Music] good morning it's been about 24 hours the epoxy is completely cured and luckily nothing happened to the mold everything is fine so far and now i can finally begin painting on this resin my first layer is just going to be sky and some clouds and hopefully i've planned everything well because i'm really nervous about not being able to go back and change things but yeah i'm going to use acrylic paint to paint this painting and once everything's dry i'm going to pour my next layer on top of that let's get painting [Applause] [Music] do that is the most satisfying type healing i have ever done these edges man and the clear epoxy and now i'm just really hoping this will not destroy the paint i just have this image in my head of the paint like dissolving because of the epoxy even though i know that doesn't make any sense because this is made for you know covering paint why do i think like this so i'm gonna pour a layer of epoxy about like three millimeters thick or something and we're gonna wait until tomorrow to paint the rest epoxy time [Music] all right everyone i present to you a success it didn't dissolve the paint and it's looking super nice and shiny i'm very curious to see now what this will look like once i put the mountains on here and we get a few more layers in so uh let's get fainting [Music] [Applause] [Music] here's the deal last week i ordered some uv resin because first of all i suck at planning but also i wanted to try it out because you can use uv resin to build up layers of resin much more quickly than what you can with normal ones like more layers better 3d shape makes sense so i really wanted to try it out but it seems like it's not going to be here before the end of the project so i'm going to do a compromise do a bit fewer layers i still think it's gonna look super cool it's really challenging to always have to think about the 3d shape like i constantly have to know which parts are going to be closer to the viewer and which parts are going to be far away because i like i know i can't go back and change anything so before i pour the resin i have this moment of panic where i'm like okay let's get back to the painting [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] guess what arrived five days too late hi clyde uh yeah always stealing the show as usual oh my god guess what arrived five days too late the uv resin well i was hoping when i was painting that i could use the uv resin on the tree to make like more leaves and stuff but now i can do that but i'm going to try to use this for the foreground and give it even more layers than i have on the rest and hopefully that will make it more 3d than the rest of it maybe it will look funky i don't know but i'm excited to try this stuff i've never tried this before and i have my uv flashlight thing here and supposedly this is supposed to dry within like three minutes of using this which is a big like step up from regular resin in terms of curing time more painting then [Music] i've just finished up my layer down here and i'm gonna pour the rest in on top of that got this little tip and you're not supposed to smell it i think but it smells like mold okay i'm gonna get my mask eel i think we're gonna have to open a window as well i'm gonna have to try to contain it down here because i don't want it to flow all over the place i don't think i need a very thick layer i'm just gonna use a brush to get this onto all the places i want it [Music] okay so i'm gonna put this rails here and then balance my uv lamp on top of that and let it stay for like two three minutes seriously this stuff smells in the whole room even though i've opened the door like wide open it just anyway it seems to be cured now like what is this magic why haven't i used this before i'm probably gonna use uv resin for everything now okay let's paint a few more layers and get this done [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay guys before we pop this thing out of the mold finally remove the mold and hopefully i don't have to do any sanding please it looks smooth we might not have to do any sanding why did i put so much glue okay i didn't think it would be this thick let's just fast forward and get all of this off oh boy we gotta sand it anyway there are still some bits and pieces of the foam board left on the side here and it's a little bit uneven so it's sanding time i'm finally done sanding but oh my god this is such a heavy block of resin and i love how this turned out it looks super tricky when you turn it around it's really weird i think this is the most challenging painting i've done because i always have to think about these 3d shapes and also the resin affects the colors in a really weird way it kind of evens out all the contrast so it's much less contrasty than before i pour the resin i'd love to do this again it was so much fun and i think for next time i would put even more layers and focus more on the 3d shapes and also i mean we could put real things in there because it's resin there are so many possibilities thank you guys so much for watching and thank you to our patrons for supporting us and letting us do crazy stuff like this and now let's have a look at the final results [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so you
