hi I'm since I Santos I'm going to demo second painting technique which is a over painting technique over a dry surface [Music] I normally use a painting technique called indirect painting which means that every layer every stage is just a setup for the following layers you let the first layers dry before applying new paint and taking it further and further towards a finish just to revise it quickly it's basically a wetter wet thin layer of paint with a lot of medium so that the colors blend together and get that finished refined look that we see in the Masters works it's healthier for that painting if you use the fat over lean system which is to use the less amount of oil at the beginning of the painting and then at the end use the most amount of fat of oil so that the painting holds in time without cracking too much in general you don't want to be changing shapes too much because this layer is gonna be thin so it might become transparent over time so I want to make sure that whatever area I fix I use more paint to cover and unbalanced that transparent effect of oil paint also you don't want to be making areas too light compared to what you have because since oil becomes transparent if you had darker areas underneath that will show in time as I paint in this final stage I want to take everything to a finish piece by piece the earlier stages were more loose I was regarding everything at once and comparing things to other things but now I'm just gonna focus in a particular area in this case I'm gonna demonstrate the forehead so I'm just gonna go to the forehead and and show you how I make it let's paint a little bit of linseed oil here for the medium and I'm gonna do my limited palette using titanium white since titanium white is a very slow dryer and I'm working and I'm gonna be painting in my sketchbook I had a little bit of the marble dust here which I can just mix into it as a dust like that but Williamsburg prepares already one of the same dust the marble dust with the oil in the medium so I'm gonna get a little bit of this nice liquefied dust kind of thing and mix it up with my wife that way becomes a little bit more transparent because they tell you is really opaque and it will make it dry faster because the particles of the dust bring air into the paint that way it dries it from within next to this I'm gonna put yellow ochre pale can um red and ivory black I'm going to mix it with my fast drying ivory black the fast dryer is gonna help the other really slow dryer dry faster the first thing I'm gonna do is get some of my medium I want to make sure that the whole thing is nice and saturated as you can see this area is dry already oops I took a little bit of paint there um so that area wasn't dry it's fine now the first thing to do here is to make sure that the shape is correct and I want to add more space on top of the forehead here because I think it's a little bit too short [Music] I'm trying to find a general color for the whole forehead so that I can add it very thinly and cover everything that I've painted underneath here it's a very rough kind of application because I was just finding color shapes what I'm gonna do now is refine all this stuff the forehead is the yellower part of the whole face having the the middle area here between the eyes and the nose being the most warmer pinkish area and then warmer in the bottom looking for this general color that I can apply to the whole forehead [Music] I put that base there of just wet paint of the local color that I have just a base nothing specific I'll be painting into it now the first thing I'll go over is the edges so I'm going to go around the edges and make sure that I have those in context and well established before I go into the middle of the form [Music] and there is some darkness in between those hairs there against the flesh so we want to make sure that we look up values and constantly measure values against each other how dark is this area versus this in order for this to feel like light is hitting it you have to darken that stuff up but if you focus on every little area you realize that you end up lighting more and more each area and then that makes the whole image flat I'm working on the forehead alone so I cannot get distracted and go other places and since I'm doing the edges going around making sure that every boundary [Music] [Music] [Music] now as I'm finishing the edges I can go in and move in side the form more and more adding these cool tones close to the shadow there to give the sense of roundness I'm doing this painting of Dana she took a workshop with me a couple of years ago in Florence which is a great painter herself I'm gonna put her link in the description below so you can go check out her still lifes are incredible [Music] I'm gonna put some of the surrounding colors that black hair around the edges here to redefine my boundaries so when I come to paint the hair I already have a nice base of what's going to come around that area finish the wedding - wedding on top of that under painting that first painting stage with all the blocking colors is really different and now that everything is wet I'm gonna get this dry brush which is super soft and and and kind of like brush it so I can get rid even more of those brush strokes to make a smoother now this is I'm just gonna do this for the sake of of demoing sometimes I like leaving the painting rough and show the brushstrokes so this is another technique that you can use I'm gonna try using it here without ruining it and it's basically going around and softening all the transitions so that the brushstrokes disappear and all you see it's a nice sense of form all right so that's a demonstration of the forehead in second painting I'm gonna continue working on this if you want to see the finished painting check out my Instagram accounts Esther Santos I'll put the link in the description box below let's wrap this video up this is second painting wearing too wet when the colors and the medium set [Music]
