Overanalyzing Avatar: The Tales of Ba Sing Se

it's nice that in this episode that's really supposed to be just a day in the life it starts with the mundanity of the gang getting ready for the day sets the tone properly just like judy did in the last episode [Music] i'm pissed off that this information is somewhere in the neurons and the synapses of my brain so you have to know it too tom's toes look longer here than they do in the episode the library god have mercy on your soul [Music] [Applause] so this raises an odd question with how toff makes herself look here and the theremin music and everything do you think this world has legends or even sightings of aliens that's obviously what toff's going for here so that's gotta be the explanation right all right this is pretty dope it's nice to see the common everyday uses for bending it's not just a combat art like the omashu delivery system or the trains for boston say the world is different from ours so things even as simple as chilling in a sauna should be different [Music] well that wasn't so bad i'm not usually into that stuff but i actually feel girly this is a really weird line considering less than an episode ago you were all dolled up like this tough i'd say you were more put together then than now wow great makeup thanks for a clown toff should have been able to tell this girl was lying right even before she called her a clown ah maybe it's hard when they're walking in a group of people or something this is the most infuriating voice acting ever whoever voiced this give them a raise it's like dripping with vapid [ __ ] energy that's a rare talent good one star no that was a good one like your poodle monkey the animation on top here would make you think she fake last three times but she only does two fake laughs and then inhales you know what else is a good one oh yeah i think that's a proper response i think that's bang on top is good at that doling out exact justice do we think guitar took a little bit too far yeah probably who knows how hurt these girls got from this oh well no time to think about that back to the sweet bonding moment one of the good things about being blind is that i don't have to waste my time worrying about appearances i don't care what i look like i'm not looking for anyone's approval i know who i am this is a really nice moment from toph and it's really the first time we ever get to see her show some weakness she could have easily fallen into the trap of just being the character that's a badass and loud mouth and always quipping and kicking ass but they give her moments like this because she's a real character of course she's self-conscious behind the bravado sometimes just like everyone is and they really could have left that out but i'm glad they didn't i know it doesn't matter but you're really pretty i am yeah you are similarly great from katara too less meaning behind it because of course katara would say this but it still feels good that she does toff and qatar have had a somewhat rocky relationship up to this point so taking the time to have them have a good time and get along in this anthology episode was super smart i am yeah you are [Music] and i love this the most tough gets a little rattled katara reassures her and instantly she's just like oh word oh all right and she's good to go that might feel flippy floppy on some other character but they've shown top to demonstrate all the trays the katara just listed so it feels right [Music] ah [ __ ] okay here we go the moon flower likes partial shade makes sense that i would have some knowledge of plants and bonnie considering his tea lover status man bending sports seems like the coolest most expressive idea ever like you could do so much with it it's as limitless as the fighting styles too bad we never get to see anything else from it when i'm through with you kids the window won't be the only thing that's broken so this guy's like an actual giant right like he's 10 feet tall 700 pounds head the size of a beach ball for the record this is what everyone would look like when they say i would be a water bender so i could blood men or an earth bender so i can metal bend you would not be a bloodbender or a metal bender you would look like this guy i would look like this guy with a poor stance you are unbalanced and you can be easily knocked over ira once again preaches real martial arts [ __ ] this guy looks like a stiff breeze would knock him over and do a trained martial artist like i wrote yeah it'd probably be like man what is this [ __ ] guy doing in this shot we see arrow catch the knife on a normal grip then in this next shot he catches it in a reverse grip and then on this very next shot he's back to holding it normally again and then on the next shot he's back to holding it in reverse style jesus christ yeah i'm not gonna neglect it i just wanted to get all the wacky trivia [ __ ] out of the way before i got into what this little short really means and what it means to me this is absolutely the best few minutes the show has to offer full stop i'd let ira's full song play out out of sheer respect but youtube copyright won't let me you know how it goes happy birthday my son if only i could have helped you ira's story ends on this heart-wrenching note of it being his son's birthday and he chose to spend that day being a father figure to a bunch of kids something i'm sure he wished he could have spent the day doing with lieuten his son he soothes a really little boy who's crying administers some good solid foundational teachings to some boys trying to teach them a lesson that sticks to be honorable but also be pragmatic and helps the young man who is struggling with who he is and what he's doing with his life these are all situations that he'd probably experience with lieutenant when he was growing up and he chooses to celebrate lieutenant's short life by trying to be the father figure that he still wishes he could be and that's heartbreaking man that's some genuine human [ __ ] that's not even to say that he's in the city that his son died fighting to attack he's being a father figure to the people he besieged only a few years prior the common folk of the city whose defenses took his son from him but we see that airo doesn't blame then iro feels like he had a bigger hand to play in his son's death than any one person in these walls we see in an iro dream sequence when he's hurt that lieutenant's grave is beneath a tree on a hill somewhere in the fire nation i'm sure so aro seeks out a similar scene to honor his son this is incredible television incredible storytelling incredible animation and visuals and incredible voice acting from the late great maka i'm not afraid to admit that i at least well up every time i watch this scene every time i can't help it honestly i'm trying to find the words to say to really capture this moment but either i'm not a good enough writer or maybe those words just don't exist the tale of iro is incredible comes marching home these are actually hog monkeys they're mentioned a few times and i went a long time not knowing that these are actually what those are ooh that's a rabaroo i wish i could get her a big open prairie like she likes and let her hop her way to happiness let's do it say again there's a big open space right outside the walls of the city and you don't have the permits for that you think in a city so ruled by bureaucracy that you could just take a big chunk of land and do whatever you want with it i doubt this very much oh forget it what is this joke this guy's cabbages are getting messed up why does he get a lion on a joke but no one else who is this random cabbage merchant we've never seen before if you look closely here aang actually tosses the bison whistle up in the air and catches it right before he blows into it who is this mystery man standing next to hang in this shot everyone around him seems to have fled and the zookeeper didn't seem to be around anywhere so who is this who is this crying in the background i've never seen this man before right now ever in my entire life as the animals run by what is this that's a cow or something you gotta love seeing ang do some proper large-scale earth bending too this episode isn't all just character stuff it's got a little subtle power growth for rang here too as he improvises the zoo together this girl we see run through the gates is the same girl whose cat got out of the house and into the elephant mandrel habitat you can actually hear some murmurings here that catch soccer's attention but i can't for the life of me make them out maybe you guys can't i'm pretty sure avatar only hired like one laughter voice actor and they only did one or two takes they call me saka that is in the water tribe i am not an oaf so i'm pretty sure the secondary layer joke here is that saka doesn't understand what a high heel actually really is outside of the seven five syllable scheme to my knowledge a haiku was supposed to follow that scheme as well as being about depicting a moment in nature as well like a lot of the head ladies haikus are there's nuts and there's fruits in fall the clean plum drops always to be squashed so even though saka is technically doing it right he's still kind of making an ass out of himself in this shot this old guy is shown to be on the last table before the counter but then in this next reverse shot he's at the second last table before the counter don't look now but there is a girl over there at the corner table she knows we're fire nation iro actually turns and looks with a lot of concern in his face here which is kind of surprising hi lee my name's jyn thank you and well i was wondering if you would like to go out sometime you'd love to attaboy iro also who wrote jyn who voiced jin she's very likable and confident right off the bat i like her i gotta change my vote for zuko's best hairstyle my bad didn't take this into account rookie mistake excuse me sir would you and your girlfriend care for dessert she is not my girlfriend zuko's lip movements don't follow through as the shot transitions but i also love how this waiter guy just kind of walks off like i don't get paid enough to yell that by kids and why was this dude even asking about dessert gin's still absolutely murdering some noodles as we speak you juggled yes i juggled i've always wanted to learn how to juggle can you show me something it looks like here jyn is handing zuko at least five distinct items but when she hands them to him and he throws them up there's only three we're back we're back to full moons by the way guys don't worry it didn't take long i can't believe it they aren't lit [Music] close your eyes and don't peek zuko this is the dumbest [ __ ] in the entire world you got after otto for fire bending his tee but you're out here lighting 20 candles in record time what if a single person just happened to look out their window right now that brings up an idea though what if people saw zuko do this people actually might have but would they risk telling the police or the daily and if they don't know about the war they would just think huh firebender pretty cool and then carry on so i think despite zuko not knowing it this was less of a risk than people think it was don't get me wrong it's still dumb as hell now it's your turn to close your eyes zuko really just kissed the girl from the opposing side of the war he's had a lot of mental walls broken down first on a personal level with song then on a familial level with lee and now on a romantic level with jin but in between all these walls breaking we still see zuko doing shady [ __ ] and being angry that's why this character arc feels so well executed i think zuko's viewpoints are challenged and changed regularly but that doesn't change who he is until they all stack up and he has a breakthrough this is a big one though a kiss with a random earth kingdom girl that's a big step for a boy who used to laugh over the idea of the city he's standing and being burned to the ground that being said [ __ ] you had it zuko you blew it how was your night prince zuko this door has a crack in it before it opens that magically gets mended when zuko slams it shut [Music] it was nice that feels good and it feels right [Music] everyone knows by this point that this is soccer's bag that mobo jumps into but no one cares about tough bag continuity and honestly it's bad continuity because she didn't have an auto when oppa was taken so it was probably on a saddle and i don't know if you guys have been paying attention but oppa is not really around so much right now this tough defer could have conceivably gotten into soccer's back from the time they gave oppa a bath so that works i'm almost like oh what the [ __ ] man this is some cosmic lining up [ __ ] why this gotta look like this all right let me get this straight you've got these little mini panthers just running around the streets of boston say how many kids a year go missing from these things roaming around in packs just fly up you idiot oh never mind oh i guess one of them jumped on moment between shots sure all right and understands locking mechanisms i think momo might just be really smart but he doesn't speak english i like that these cats turn out to be the absolute homies they see that momo's friends with oppa they're like oh hold up we got you very sad note to end on but very very smart to end on a story beat after an anthology episode i think lets us know that this isn't turning into some slice of life show we've still got stuff to do and that stuff is find oppa what do you want me to say this episode's awesome a lot of people listed as the best in the series but i wouldn't go that far most of those people are really just talking about the tale of ira when they say that and i do agree that that is the best three or four minutes this show has to offer but that on its own doesn't make this the best episode to me at least the rest of the tales are somewhere between good and fine toff and katara share a nice moment and so to zuko and jin hang and saka don't really get a whole lot to do saka especially but their stories are still fun at the very least and momo's at the end to keep the story rolling i do really love this episode because i love these characters it starts with them getting ready for the day and it's just a day in the life and that really helps them feel like they're real people like i always say just having an episode where they can breathe and be themselves that's really cool sometimes they're gonna have quieter days and just chill out it's not gonna be world deciding battles every day these people are just people
