scientific research continues to unfold the wonders and mysteries of our universe fairly often secular scientists are very puzzled and surprised by what they discover many of these discoveries just don't line up with their worldview however in many of these cases the Bible actually makes perfect sense of what we see anticipating these findings thousands of years in advance coming up on today's edition of origins surprise the Bible explains that with JC Gert [Music] hello and welcome to origins I'm ray Heiple it's an honor to be your host today during this program we showcase interesting guests who present evidence from science along with other important facts validating the truth of creation and the accuracy of the Bible today's guest JC Gert is an author and international speaker and holds degrees in both physics and engineering technology he currently serves as the managing director of the starting-point project and has been speaking on the authority of Scripture for over 32 years welcome to the program's Jay it's an honor to be back on the program again it's great to have you again you're going to be telling us something about surprise the Bible explains that now what does that mean sure well science is awesome it's produced a lot of things that are very helpful for us today but often scientists will discover something that's a bit puzzling to them it kind of goes against the scenario that they've been believing for years and even teaching in the school systems but when you understand Scripture it's really not a surprise that we can kind of sarcastically say surprise the Bible actually explains that which is very exciting because what they're discovering backs up what the Bible's been saying all along and they're not starting with that as their foundation right these scientists they're sort of going against the Bible and then when they find out something that that doesn't jive with the way they've always started and then they go back and see that it's in the Bible it's sort of a surprise to them for sure right it's a surprise and it's uncomfortable for them and usually they say well okay maybe the Bible says it but this doesn't really prove in the Bible quick to interject that well why don't you go ahead and show us some of the things that the Bible does explain sure we're gonna be talking today's program about the Earth's ocean specifically their origin and amount of water in them we'll look at Adam and Eve something called a population bottleneck and then we'll look at mutations and epigenetics with has to do with DNA so we'll get started we'll start out talking about the Earth's oceans this is the secular story this quote here but these oceans have not always existed on our planet arriving here many hundreds of millions of years after the earth first took shape four and a half billion years ago standard story earth cooled down in tumult from molten state and then it sat there and then millions of years later water came under the earth to form the ocean say specifically where it came from they will say this the oceans water arrived in frozen lumps from space during one of the most violent episodes on our planet's early history exactly where these comets and asteroids came from is uncertain so so there's this huge reservoir of water or somewhere out in the universe and it's just shooting chunks over at the earth over billions of years according to their story but they're not sure exactly where it came from and then they say this there's another source so you got it coming from outer space but then also they say volcanoes and other fissures in the crust allowed superheated water vapor to escape into the atmosphere you go on to say this and it rained and rained possibly for millennia if nothing else the deluge recounted by countless myth creation stories correlated with what happened in the earliest most tumultuous years of the earth so they'll talk about these mythical stories here that we have that line up with the Bible they say you know don't get too excited we're not saying there's evidence for the flood story in the Bible but yeah it rained and rained and rained well according to their timescale though I mean these rains would have happened billions of years before there were any human beings so that really doesn't even jive for them there it doesn't but they want to point that out in case anyone would mistakenly think there's any correlation here at all but the headlines recently stated this origin of Earth's water traced back to the birth of our planet and you get initially they were saying millions of years later now they're saying perhaps it was right here from the beginning here's a quote fragments of Earth's earliest rock preserved unchanged deep within the mantle until they were coughed up by volcanic eruptions suggest that our planet has had water from the very beginning did they show where that comes from do they have a theory as to where the water from the beginning came from not sure why it would have been there their initial theories say it couldn't have been there but now they're saying it looks like it's been here from the very beginning which is the opposite of what they used to teach it came millions of years later well what's interesting about that is the Bible has a commentary on that it does chime in in this particular topic 2nd Peter chapter 3 verse 5 so the earth was formed out of water in by water Peter saying that God created this earth out of water by water that would mean that waters been here from the very beginning that the Bible has always said that it took science a little bit of time to catch up yeah just a little bit behind the scenes also Genesis 1:1 everyone's familiar with that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and it goes on to say and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters obviously if God's hovering over the waters in the beginning that waters been here from the very beginning so surprised the Bible actually explains what they're discovering that it looks like waters been here from the very beginning then we also have related to the Earth's oceans the idea of the amount of water on this planet it's interesting that the earth is about 70% covered with liquid water today whereas Mars they found some frozen water some ice and talking about a flood they say they think that Mars has had a global flood ins passed to form the features that we see there but they say the earth no that's impossible there's no way there could have been a global flood on the earth even though it's 70% covered with liquid water do they show that percentage on Mars comparatively well it's very very small but it's frozen and again they're not consistent in their logic they're saying there's no way there could have been a flood on this earth even though we have all that liquid water sometimes they say well there's not enough water to have a global flood that's one of the criticisms that they say but recent headlines they say the earth may have undergone an underground ocean three times of that on the surface so they're saying yeah there's a lot of water in the oceans but there might be three times as much under the surface I've heard this too recently and I've even seen it and it goes against what I was taught in school as a as a child that they they didn't indicate any water they indicated you know magma and and all this other stuff heated rock but they we never learned about water under the Earth's crust sure they were never envisioning large amounts of water there but now it seems like there's actually evidence for that and what they'll say is this after decades of searching scientists have discovered that a vast reservoir of water enough to fill the Earth's oceans three times over may be trapped hundreds of miles beneath the surface so now they're thinking they're finding evidence of this great amount of water that's an enormous this amount of water three times the Earth's what's on the surface now which is seventy percent so three times that would be just a mind-boggling amount of water right it is and we go back to Scripture well that actually makes sense again back to the second Peter chapter three we've already read that the earth was formed out of water and by water it goes on to say this by these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed so God created the earth out of water and then later used those same waters to judge the world because of sin that's a lot of waters a lot of water in the oceans today but now we're finding out there's probably a lot more under the layers of the earth which makes a lot of sense because we also read in Genesis 7:11 talking about the flood on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth and the floodgates of the heavens were open Bible says the great Fountains of the deep burst forth so water came from within the earth up in the atmosphere back down for 40 days and 40 nights so even if a third of that water which would be all the oceans again doubled God let out for a time that would be enough to cover the whole work plenty I was a lot of details to that covered in some other origins programs plenty of water to flood the whole earth especially knowing that the geography and geology was different that's right before the flood so again the Bible it's not a surprise to us the Bible explains that then we're gonna take a look at Adam knee very briefly here typical secular story is that mankind is evolved from an ape lake creature starting about six million years ago and you've typical diagrams like this they even had an article in Newsweek had a cover the search for Adam and Eve they were not actually looking for the biblical admin Eve they were just looking at the progenitors of the human race for a male and female what's interesting with genetics today we can trace our origins back a males are the only ones that have a Y chromosome so skipping the details we can look at our genetics and we can trace our origins back through the male lineage from the Y chromosome and they figure you know what that looks like there was one male that we've all come from they say oh there were other males living at the time but we are genetically related to one same thing with the females most of the DNA is in the nucleus of the cell but in the mitochondria it's kind of the powerhouse of the cell there's segments of DNA there and only females pass on this mitochondrial DNA so by looking at that they can trace our lineage is back on the female end and they say they do believe there was one female that were all genetically related to again they changed the story say well there were other women are out at the time on not just that one there but only one survived to pass on to genetics so they're still trying to hold on to human beings evolving from you know all the way back to amoeba and then you know up the scale chimpanzees Apes human beings lots of them but but they're starting to say one man one woman yes they are but it's getting too close to Scripture that makes them a little bit nervous but here's headland they say well those two male and female they didn't live in the same timeframe at all so it's not like the Bible but more recently they're saying the genetic Adam and Eve did not live too far apart in time now the further they study the more it looks like they were probably living at the same time and here's a quote Y chromosome Adam and mitochondrial Eve we're thought to have lived tens of thousands of years apart now two major studies suggest that they may have lived around the same time after all surprise this is a shock to them well when we look at Scripture it's not a surprise at all Genesis 3:20 and Adam called his wife's name Eve because she was a mother of all the living there was one single female according to Scripture and she was around when Adam was around because Adam actually named her we're talking a matter of hours right God and created Adam he's naming the animals that probably took some time he sees there's no creature like him as his helper so God puts him to sleep and creates Eve so we're not talking tens of thousands of years we're talking Adam a few hours later II shirt which is what we get Genesis 1:27 31 so a God created man in his own image male and female created you them and goes on to say and the evening in the morning were the sixth day they were created on the same day this is what scriptures told us all along so when modern scientists say wow it looks like these first two individuals lived about the same time it's no surprise to those of us who know Scripture then we'll take a look at something called population bottleneck I've been there in situations like nobody likes that no not a lot of fun what this typically refers to is anytime you have a population whether it's people or animals and the population gets dwindled down to a very low number it affects things afterwards so that's what we're gonna look at everything Happ to the population where you know maybe disease or you know some catastrophic event where all of a sudden you had millions of a kind of an animal and suddenly you only have a few sure headlines say humans may have come close to extinction about 70,000 years ago according to the latest genetic research now we're not going to get too hung up with the 70,000 number they're dating things are usually a bit off but what they're saying is this is actually relatively recent according to their history relatively recently almost all humans were wiped out from the face of the earth they go on to say this the study suggests that at one point there may have been only two thousand individuals alive as our species teetered on the brink so a couple of million years from that six million figure with the Apes starting to evolve into humans and then all the way to you know 70,000 years ago which in their timeframe is like yesterday we go from all of these ape-like human-like creatures down to just 2,000 yeah they say a very small number well that's kind of interesting here's what we look at as a population bottleneck you've got a variety of genetic information and whether it's people or animals here represented by the different colored circles a catastrophic event happens where a lot of them get wiped out and now you only have a limited amount you've got red and blue circles left which will then repopulate so everything after that's going to be the genetic information that was left you lose a lot of those other color you may lose certain features in in a particular species because that genetic material just doesn't make it through the bottleneck because it's lost so they could tell genetically that something happened where we lost the genetic variety and here's what they said it's theorized based on genetic evidence that a few tens of thousands of years ago the population of Homo sapiens was reduced for a period to a few thousand or tens of thousands of people they go on to say this such a bottleneck would explain the extreme low level of genetic diversity found within our species when contrasted with others you know such as chimps so they said something's going on here where it looks like almost all human beings were wiped out once again the Bible clearly explains that back to second Peter again chapter 2 verse 5 and God did not spare the ancient world but saved Noah one of eight people the Bible says that God wiped out every one saved known his family just eight people were left Genesis 6 through 8 the the flood according to scripture yes almost everyone was wiped out don't 8 people than they had to repopulate the earth after that so surprise we don't know a whole lot about that period before the flood but we know there were cities there were civilizations that were around for about 1,500 years or so right so a lot we're talking a lot of people even from the Scriptures perspective you know which fits in what they're saying now we've millions of people perhaps down to not 2,000 but to eight scripture tells us the exact number was 8 and that's what we see with genetics of very small people so the same kind of picture that's happening now science is saying in a sense that what the Bible said was right yeah what they just don't want to things like that where do we go from here then well next thing we're gonna take a look at has to do with DNA we've got two examples to wrap everything up with well sounds good Jay why don't you just hold that right now we have to take a break if you stay with us we're going to continue talking to Jay and see just how it is that this population bottleneck affected the human race and I think you're going to see surprised the Bible explains that stay with us [Music] you [Music] welcome back to origins we're talking to J seeker who's been sharing some fascinating things from the Bible and from science and J we left off talking about this population bottleneck where the scientists now are noticing that there was an enormous population of humanoid type creatures and then it got down to about 2,000 or so they're saying which is a you know a very small number and then it expands again from there can you just sort of summarize again what that means sure well they see that there's a lot of loss of genetic information the diversity in human populations today isn't as wide as they would expect it if we've been evolving from an ape-like creature for six million years and then our modern form we've been around they say maybe 100 to 200 thousand years there should be more diversity unless something happened and that's where they say well there must have been this bottleneck where almost everyone died out in just a small group survived yeah so just they're limited in DNA information was then spread to the people today and that's what we have with the scriptural account of the flood where Noah and his family you know there say we have eight people saved through that and there's a lot of genetics that back up details of that but one thing even more interesting is the whole passage in 2nd Peter chapter 3 Peters giving an endtime prophecy so I believe he's talking about the days that we're living in and he's saying that the skeptics in the end times they're going to doubt Christ's return they're gonna say where is his return you said he's coming back he hasn't come back yet in fact he's never coming back in fact everything continues on the way it always has from the beginning of the universe until today and they are saying that and that whole principle of uniformitarianism that we look at here on the program where everything is the same basically it takes millions of years for anything to change slow gradual processes no major events really to speak of but then Peter says these skeptics who are doubting Christ's return they're King James says willingly ignorant of two major things one is that God created this earth out of water by water to begin with miraculously and secondly use that same body of water to flood the entire earth as a judgment because of sin so if you're a secular scientist or a skeptic in general and you're ignoring those two things and God miraculously created everything to begin with out of water and that later there was a worldwide flood you're going to come to a lot of wrong can ujin's and your guess is about history and so that's why scientific textbooks are filled with a lot of interesting stories because they're ignoring those two things and coming up a lot of crazy stories to explain how we got here isn't that interesting what they're what they're missing what Peter said 2,000 years ago that they would mess up his creation that we were that the earth was created out of water and they've never said that until now they're starting to try to try to say that but no boy wait a minute you know just because it's in the Bible doesn't mean the Bible is true but then the other one is they don't believe in what sometimes we call a catastrophe catastrophism that there was this great flood that wiped it everything out those two things have been what science has been denying for quite some time now now there's they're starting to say that what we're seeing they're starting to believe a little bit more in catastrophism they just don't want to say one worldwide event because it gets a little bit too too close to Scripture and they are saying pretty recently right seventy thousand years ago is recent on their timescale yeah and those dates change there's a lot of assumptions behind the methods that they're using all right so well catch us up to speed then sure next two examples that we're gonna look at here have to do a DNA most people are somewhat familiar with DNA a little coiled up ladder inside the nucleus of our cells so we're looking at something called mutations here mutations are basically for the most part accidental copying errors there are a few exceptions where it seems like there's programmed pre-programmed changes which is a design feature but mutations have to do with when creatures reproduce they copy their DNA so humans are animals we copy our DNA and pass it on to our offspring well there's so much information on our DNA mistakes happen and these again a random copying errors so we're gonna take a look at that how that relates to what they're discovering in science it's interesting quote from Wired magazine and online says most of the mutations we have found arose in the last 200 generations or so you know that's interesting to me because I've always learned you know from evolutionary models that well mutations that's what causes the races to evolved in the species to evolve right that's that's how frogs turn into human beings through mutations sure mutations and natural selection they admit that most of mutations are bad but some of them they say are good and those supposedly accumulate and cause all millions of years but now they're just saying 200 generation so now they're saying most of you these copying errors have happened within 200 generations and they went on to say talk about that 73% of all genetic variation arising in just the last five thousand years that's an interesting number yeah and they say of variations that seem likely to cause harm a full 91% emerged during this time so they're saying that most of what they see is fairly recent and then the bad ones generally within the past 5,000 years some mutations aren't good they're saying they're bad most of them are bad and they're surprised that they're so recent that if we've been evolving from an ape-like creature for six million years why is it that these copying errors are kind of just happening now but again the Bible seems to explain that very well okay biblically speaking I think there's a very strong case for creation roughly 6,000 years ago I think it's very strong I think scientifically - there's a lot of evidence cover that on many other programs and origins and today a modern generation time would be let's just round it off 30 years well you do that you come up with about 200 generations now we're not staying magically all that's the exact same number there was a ballpark figure this is a ballpark as well but it's amazing that it lines up with the history in the Bible that the reason they're seeing these mutations were the last 200 generations is that's about all they've been since creation there weren't any people before that right and then we go on and we look at this we look at the whole history of the earth we've got a flood roughly four and a half thousand years ago so it's no surprise that almost all the bad mutations are happening within they say about 5,000 years because of everything that happened in the flood including the bottleneck and the atmosphere being different after that we would expect mutations to start to increase right after the flood which matches up with what they're finding in genetics and we go on look at one other example here epigenetics familiar with genetics having to do with their DNA and all that epigenetics means above or in addition to they used to think that all the information was just on those rungs the ladders or DNA that's it now they're finding there's actually information living outside of that and Time magazine had a cover article it said why your DNA isn't your destiny and went on to say the new science of epigenetics reveals how choices you make can actually change the genes of those of your kids two choices we make habits we have whether your exercise things that you eat not only effect yourself but they can actually affect your children and even grandchildren that's we're finding that's fascinating to me because when we start talking about choice we're talking about the human will and really not not the body but the soul and the soul effects the body is what we would say and in the body certainly affects the soul and now the scientists are saying well maybe it's not all mechanistically determined that there are things that we can do to change who we are is interesting it's not predestined just based on those rungs of that ladder and we have something called methyl tags and those little purple triangles there they attach to the DNA and they basically are either promoters of genes genes or segments of you know thousands and tens of thousands of those rungs on the ladder which are called nucleotides they basically either promote genes to help them get expressed or they suppress those things so it can change the expression of your DNA even though it's not changing the DNA itself and this is kind of how it works they have an example here where they have a mouse that in the laboratory what they did is they expose the mouse to the smell of cherry blossoms very nice but then it does get worse every time they did that then they shocked the mouse oh so the mouse learned this behavior anytime I smell this stuff a shock is coming so they would start to smell it they would start to shiver because they knew the shock was coming I remember we had this substitute teacher she wore this certain kind of perfume and whenever she came into the room I think we had this experience this happens all the time but then what they did is they ended up breeding these mice okay and they tested the baby the baby mice had never been exposed to cherry blossom smell they had never been shocked but they did expose the baby mice to the cherry blossom smell and they instantly started shuddering even though they had never been shocked before something happened what's interesting is the DNA had not changed those rungs were identical but the methyl tags had changed by the experiences of the parents so they could tell by examining the cells of the the mice who had never smelled the cherry blossoms they could actually see physical changes that were experience that they that they had but it was because of what their parents experienced yeah and it was the again the DNA itself the rungs in the order did not change but it was because of these methyl tags was passed on to their offspring and again we look at what the Bible has to say we need to be a little careful here but in exodus 34:7 it says visiting the iniquity of the fathers to the children in the grandchildren to the third and the fourth generations now the context of here is talking about a covenant oh you'll thing with God not a legal thing it doesn't mean if the dad murders someone that the children or grandchildren are put to death this is a covenant before God if the father breaks a covenant with God I can affect the children and the grandchildren there's obviously a lot of spiritual things going on here but it could mean and indicate that there are physical ramifications of things that the parents do and it could be that we're seeing that and modern genetics so I think there's a correlation we just don't want to push it too far and we've got a lot of learning to do with epigenetics that's great Jay it's fascinating to see that what science is saying has been in the Bible all along well I want to thank you for being with us on origins and I want to thank all of you for joining us on origins we like to show how the Bible is true and what we've seen today is that science is starting to see that too even though they may not be very comfortable with it well you and I know that the Bible is true and the proof is all around you thanks for joining us for this edition of
