hello and welcome to only connect where you'll be bamboozled not just by the questions but the entire format of the series I'm joined tonight by two teams who have already lost heats though only by a narrow margin somehow here they are again I think this year we're inviting everyone back for another go and what that means is that whoever wins tonight could still go through to the semi-finals though not automatically whoever loses having had two bites of the cherry will be going home with faces like they've been sucking lemons so at least that's two of your five a day so let's say hello again to on my right Paul Taylor a post graduate research assistant with an interest in the chemistry of cooking said the page a specialist in American Civil War and revolution who keeps greyhounds and can speak French some Latin Spanish and a bit of Russian and their captain Sam K a Chelsea supporter who works as an accountant and doesn't have a large intestine they are all graduates of Corpus Christi College Oxford they are the corpuscles Sam Sam of the missing bowels you were just pip to the post by the cap lovers in the last game how did that go for you it was pretty close but hopefully over got our eye in now and it will be better this time and you know what happens if you win tonight no marvellous let's hope someone does you will be meeting on my left : kids an accountant who enjoys the work of Thomas Hardy and playing correspondence chess Marc Cooper a politics and international relations graduate with a collection of over a thousand vinyl records and their captain Josh Mandell a keen cyclist who once lived on a houseboat which was used as a Nazi honey trap in world war ii united by their passion for maps they are the carter files josh you lost to the celts in your first heat how did that go well we we started okay but we let ourselves down a bit on round 2 on the sequences so we've been practicing that since last time and do you know what happens if you win tonight we will be happier than if we lose marvelous well the one thing we all know is how to play the quiz which is I asked what's the connection between four apparently random clues and you tell me Carter files you won the toss so you'll be going first please choose your Egyptian hieroglyph twisted flax please twisted flax okay you're going to be seeing some pictures I want to know what is the connection between them here's the first place could they all be raised should we go next next they're all ray you did not need to see the fourth clue which was a simple X ray they are all raised what are you looking at we think the third one is ray Davis from The Kinks that's right the second one is a manta ray or some kind of fish called array that's right the manta ray also called a devil ray and Man Ray the first one it is it is Man Ray Man Ray the surrealist absolutely right very well done though coming in after three Clues you get two points over to the core puzzles to pick a hieroglyph we have two reads please Luffy what is the connection between these clues here's the first is a simple of embarrass everyone next they kept aside friends that will their cut the one with the prom video the one with the holiday armadillo do we want the third one or sure that is definitely what they are is just obvious that they are mentioned in friends episode titles so the one with the prom video the one with the holiday armadillo they are episodes or friends you didn't need to see the one with the Princess Leia fantasy and the fake Monica very good you get three points coming off two two clues they are friends episodes back to you Carter files for choice lion please alright what's the connection between these clues here's the first next please drumming in Japan next they are prefixes for people who go into space so astronauts cosmonauts taken awards special notes that's absolutely not after all of them the last one would have been USA Astro and that is what space travelers are called in those countries especially not in France Thai Connaught in China cosmonaut in Russia well done right it is time to go to you corpuscles to pick a question I have Horace please okay what is the connection between these clues here's the first they're all fat something another good score you are all demonstrating tonight why it's worth sticking around for another show they are all nicknamed fact what are we talking about tell me more about these clues so the a-bomb dropped over Nagasaki is is Fat Boy Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday Sir Topham Hatt is The Fat Controller Frank engine and Fat Albert Fat Albert and whose character is that don't know Bill Cosby Bill Cosby's comic characters he says hey hey hey that's Fat Albert very well done back to you Carter files water please water what is the connection here time starts now next please next please oh yes there's wealth countless specifically yeah should we go friend is enough do you need to be they've all predicted sports results have another go football World Cup results I'm afraid I can't accept it so I'm going to show the last clue to the four puzzles for a possible bonus in the future yes so they all prove they're all animals that predict the future I mean they don't but I'm going to have to give you a bonus points yes unfortunately few there canterville's naki this squirrel actually predicted the US premiere he didn't but was said to predict the u.s. presidential election Paul the Octopus was something to do with the World Cup and I think the donkey was in the Olympics they are animals which trod on squares all right hey or did something else random that was taken to be a prediction of a range of things from politics to sport what about the groundhog what does that do he's gonna be good to spring off whether it's afraid of its own shadow when it comes out whether it sees its shadow is meant to tell us whether or not it's going to be good winter or spring but it is of course completely random that leaves only the horned Viper for you corpuscles and of course the music question because we haven't had that yet we'll be hearing your clues here's the first next we pour on Uncle Bill when to kick the bucket and you left me in his will the other day I popped around see poor auntie Jane she said your Uncle Phil is left - you were watching China I put it on why the cross be best for I look today five seconds any ideas fire fire is not the answer so Carta files what about a possible bonus they all to do with gold metal precious metals I'll accept it metal is the connection not all gold its copper kettle that we heard titanium any old iron that was Stanley Holloway I really wanted to hear the whole of that song and a heart of gold metals is the connection there for the bonus at the end of round one then the Carter files have got five points but the corpuscles are ahead with seven round to the sequences round what is the fourth in a sequence you may see up to three clues before giving me the answer Carter files will be going first again which would you like through reads please all they've gone with the reads what would the fourth clue be in this sequence is the first snack cakes she was getting next please it's gonna be they rolling Oh five seconds Friday not the answer I'm afraid so core puzzles you could get a bonus here is it San Jose it's not you're very close and you've got the connection sort of it's not reasons to be cheerful but it is Ian Dury hit me with your rhythm stick and the verse goes in the dock of Tiger Bay on the road to Mandalay from Bombay to Santa Barry not San Jose I think last night I dreamed I went to Manderley it's the house Manderley not quite Mandalay in Rebekah together had you been a team of six I think you'd have got it if it as it is not quite over do you think or puzzles for a round to your question twisted flax please justa facts what would be the fourth in this sequence here's the first next on if they serve it's gonna be as listed next yes oh what's the comfort is the currency for baby see physically I think is really good at businesses is it black it's not my I think it's the white word for on a black background that is exactly what it is it is the beautiful sight of the white capitalized word for on a black background which is of course they are the BBC idents they are and the fourth is that beacon of good sense and wonderful quizzing BBC four over to you Carta files will have the eye of horus please I have Horus what would be the fourth in this sequence is the first okay so she's gonna go 17 1890 association football should we see what the next two years hockey 1780s of be legally a union abilities we don't guess hip I guess ever go next so I said yeah association football 90 coming in after one clue I'm going to give you five points it is soccer or football or association football equals and ninety I think I heard you filling in the whole question over there it is of course the duration of games in minutes hockey is 70 rugby union is 80 soccer or football 90 very well done flashy stuff it's a gauntlet do corpuscles which would you like to go for Lyon please like okay what would be the fourth in this sequence is the first five how many houses Brahma its next three heads heads of heads so who has so it must be four three two let's writ five four three that was a four people all students so something with two heads so simon and garfunkel acceptable we actually thought of Zaphod Beeblebrox is I think you muttered over there but you are absolutely right we are looking at things with five four three and two heads say for two people rocks from the Hedgehog's guide for the attackers guide would be an example as would Simon and Garfunkel I saw them when they played live recently in London the music was so wonderful they couldn't bear to look at each other they just they couldn't I mean the money they were getting must've lured them to Hyde Park but you have never seen two people further apart on the stage I've never seen anything so far apart on stage since I went to see Dolly Parton and the front row was 23 miles from the front nobody looks up closer at dolly very well done back to you Carter files the horned Viper please will Viper these are going to be picture clues what would you expect to see in the fourth picture here's the first next oh that's the Fords so spring forwards Hall Zach so it's going to be spring physics itself yes spring forward who'sa back a picture of Denis Irwin who was a fullback how very complicated I'm going to accept it all those I think you were saying : it's in via a picture over back we went for what's the logic it's spring Ford fullbacks over the clocks going forward in the spring and back in the fall as our American cousin was saying that's exactly right it's that mnemonic and I wish I could give you extra points for the detail of the fourth loop every week I'm afraid I can't but I will give you a three points for coming in after two clues very well that core puzzles that leaves water and I would like to know what is going to be the fourth in the sequence here's the first clue this is the Chinese social networking site it's no way that's changings attended the science that my bed was corrugated being something that Google it's gotta be Google they are search engines in terms of size market share next along would be Yahoo and the biggest would be Google very well done after an extremely high scoring round to then the Carter files have got 13 points but the core puzzles are ahead with 14 time for the connecting wall the 60 includes that needs sorting into four connected groups of four corpuscles you will be going first this time and the first challenge view is to decide whether you want lion or water can we have water please you certainly could so there'll be sixteen clues there is only one perfect solution what is it you've got two and a half minutes to work that out starting now Murray so point to point this time a race course the courses jousting leaving justing you've got potential you've got like channel John check this there's like radio DJs on John Hill John field as you've got Pandora's box England D both rivers as well right I think Everton owns the top knees as well do want to differ more thing Mike when Rovers that they're a football team what else rifles a scotch right scotch tape so Murray is actually Kwasi things so course you see probably a horsey thing yeah polo adjusting a state when two point no it's got some of these safety radio DJs reporters will handle response is that someone's name Endora the types of jewelry academically they a charm I salute and rifles a sense of the Sheraton my stomach really came from Isis I don't know why no the air like point-to-point and light with the got a minute leather shorts here polo shirt adjusting what's Scott tree that could be scotch tape Scott whiskey's not anything young sir children of the names like a P length of day and pop stars that I've been hacking what's that diverse of those guy roams or lines point-to-point lines ten peg online mrs. Johnston right Streisand mixer Murray glacier of tribal events everything minutes no now to tripped on your name strikes right over Pierre and Marie deed so it's the fourth on their young and that's out of time the wall has frozen but you've got a group I'll give you another point if you can tell me the connection between those clues their activities that you ride a horse to take part in now sports conducted on horseback that's absolutely right and there are more points available for the connections in the groups you didn't find so let's resolve the room peel young Blackburn D they're DJs they were Radio one DJ at one stage absolutely I'm surprised you didn't get those who named atrophic combination is that what it was always think about SAR just too young for them but yes Radio one DJ's what about the next one Murray Galicia Everton scotch I can take the dancers there the mints don't know Everton mints the white ones a bit like home box empty means and the last one Pandora polo rivals right thank you folks Jilly Cooper box they are novels by Julie Cooper absolutely so you did sort of know what the groups were it was just finding them but you do get a point for the group you found and four points for the connection so that is a total of five this has been a very close game so far let's see if the same applies to the connecting wall a new wall is being brought out Carter files let's see what you can do with yours it's gonna be the lion wall waters been taken you've got two and a half minutes to solve it starting now okay we've got postcodes we okay that was groups of countries brick g20 yeah we have got postcode because of 93 through a state of III is that was the way that was this Nick Corey Buzzcocks their nicknames of deviation okay and strictly and then also millionaire okay so let's try it live out what its gonna be okay let's try it out millionaire throw without straightening okay I'm a Korean drumlin a murrain are all Geographic on striations geological okay right it's three strikes maybe I can factor and maybe not rich people then brick do 27 and are all groups of users who just check for it nicknames for TV shows there's nothing which shows on Western physiological fitness is there anything I don't know about that they they were I think they were glacier glacial they all show special place he'll know geological features at me I think okay so should we go through yeah of course bonus points available for the connections what about this one millionaire tw3 Buzzcocks strictly so those are nicknames for television shows famous abbreviations for television shows if you had to watch one of those shows four times a day for the rest of your life which one would it be that was the week that was yes really all three of you know I'd watch millionaire faylene but he goes for strictly oh but I'd rather only connect that's the right answer there may be bonus points coming what about this next group striations quarry drumlin moraine well those are we've all to do with places they sell geographical features that's rightfully glaciated landscape absolutely correct well this next one fat cat mogul and magnet tycoon which isn't this men that's its rich businessman and business people I suppose one should say I'm not sure if you'd call a woman a fat cat but I'd certainly like to be one still one out of two ain't bad and the last group in 11 brick 7g 20 so those are all groups of countries or political or economic groupings of country so brick is Brazil Russia India China of the leading emerging nations g20 is the group of 20 industrialized nations in 11 I think is the non-aligned movement and I don't know what e 7 is see how that they were all boy bones but you're absolutely right they are economic groups n 11 is the next 11 after the BRICS that includes Indonesia Mexico Turkey ones like that eise evan is the seven emerging economies so that's BRIC plus Indonesia Mexico and Turkey economic groups of Nations that is absolutely right so four points for the groups you found four points for the connections plus you get the bonus too for saying only connect is better than any of those shows or depending on how you want to interpret it for getting it all right that is the maximum of ten let's have a look at the scores the core puzzles are up to 19 points but the Carter files are ahead with 23 what's that more walls you say why not go to our website where you'll find plenty plus you can even make your own but we will be playing the missing vowels round this is the point of course what I say of course as if I were even beginning to understand it but one of the teams may actually go home one team will be staying on and one will be coming to the end of its run fingers on buzzers teams the first group are all resins frankincense correct mystique hey that's not the answer so you lose the point there's a bonus possibility the core puzzles mastic mastic is correct next clue pals gum from afraid you lose a point possible bonus corpuscles that's too long it's gamboge next clue Humber correct next category French actresses got vowels Catherine Deneuve correct got vast Juliet panache correct muscles or a cartoon correct part of our vision fado correct next category George Gershwin compositions Rhapsody in Blue correct don't know this one it's swanee next clue this one embraceable you next clue thought was an American in Paris correct next category methods of random selection come on teams this is coin-tossing next clue Tata's odds and evens correct corpuscles eeny meeny miny moe correct Cavazos Survey's paper stone correct well goodness me at the end of the quiz the core puzzles have got 26 the Carter files have got 26 it's a tie-break goodness me I don't think we've ever had two such close teams I don't know if you remember tiebreaks from watching the program this is how it works captain's only fingers on buzzers you are going to get one clue of missing vowels I am NOT going to tell you the category your teammates may not join in it is high noon just the two of you and bear in mind if you buzz in and give me an incorrect answer the other team will automatically win by default so buzz in with care one clue only good luck captains it is coming up on your screens now Carter files so long and thanks for all the fish your team stays alive in the competition you could still make the semi-final corpuscles I'm afraid after one of perhaps the closest contest in only connect memory we have to say goodbye to you but excellent quizzing thank you very much for coming along exhausting stuff but why not join us next time anyway for another round of only connect the quiz so smart then if you solve one of our online walls you automatically qualify for one of those internet phd's print it out frame it you've got everything you need to start a reflexology clinic goodbye
