Octopuses are amazingly intelligent. We had a couple salt water aquariums on different tables in a science classroom, and the octopus learned how to move between them.

Once we figured out he could do this, and given the fact they bury themselves in the sand and gravel at the bottom, we had to feed him first thing in the morning to know which tank he was in.

So he basically trained us to give him treats every morning!

It's interesting trying to imagine how something so different from us thinks and sees the world. Recently read Children of Ruin, sequel to Children of Time, and it explores the idea of them getting even smarter.

take up to 5 minutes to think before they try again.

Sounds like me, but really I'm just taking a short nap.

Exploring the Fascinating Minds of Octopuses The octopus in this video is presented with a fish within a container. The container is a screw top. There is a small opening on the top of the container. He can fit through the hole to taste the food but he cannot pull the food through the container. The only way into the container is to unscrew the top. So we though! He is taking a step back to analyze the situation. This is something common we see in almost every experiment. They usually take about 5 minutes or so before making a second attempt. The octopus has gotten a hold of the fish and with his arm he is able to taste the fish. There is no letting go now. As expected, the octopus is attempting to pull the fish through the small opening. He is unable to do so due to the size of the fish being much larger than the hole. The experiment has taken an unexpected twist. Instead of unscrewing the top, the octopus has applied a tremendous amount of force and has ripped off the top ”pacifier” part of the bottle. We were unable to get him to unscrew the top in this experiment. However, it was quite interesting to watch him find another way into the bottle. To give you an idea of how difficult it is to rip off the seal, his handler was unable to replicate what he did under water.
