it's launch day [Music] Twitter up this video to bring you a special message from iFixit no we interrupt this Interruption with this Interruption that new stuff from my fitted push it in grab this card but inventory sucks fix the inventory problems with iFixit Whoa Don't drop it can't fix that with I fix it just kidding yes you can wish you could take I fix it with you anywhere but your pockets aren't big enough introducing a new Moray and a new minnow take them with you anywhere so good I fix it for your loved one or just get them for yourself all right if you guys couldn't tell by your inbox the RTX 4070 Founders Edition embargoes have just lifted this is a two-part uh embargo by the way Nvidia doesn't like competition on its launch days of my competition I mean it's own board Partners so today you guys are going to see the reviews of the founders Edition 4070s which means they're going to be pretty much the same kind of review across the board tomorrow is when you guys will see the custom boards and stuff launching um spoiler we do not have a custom board we only have the founders Edition card so that's what we'll be talking about today but the reason why I have all these other cards on here is just this kind of show you a size comparison of it which is pretty nice it's about the exact same size as the 3070 was like pretty damn near identical in terms of size but anyway move on to some of the specs and stuff so the RTX 4070 it's it's kind of interesting remember there was kind of a naming Shuffle and sort of a change in the hierarchy of the graphics cards because of the outrage over the 240 80s existing a 16 gig and a 12 gig in the 12 gig being shaped down and cut and then they went ahead and said fine just kidding it's a 4070 TI and that's fine but the question is what happens to every card under that because here's the thing theoretically had the 4080 12 gig not been renamed the 4070 TI this for all intents and purposes could have been the 470 TI so let's talk specs real quick so it's ad104 which is the exact same chipset or not chipset but the exact same uh silicon that the 4070 TI is based on but it's more shaved down because the 4070 TI has more than 7000 Cuda cores this has 588 now of course it has some of the other Nvidia feature sets that you would expect to see in a fourth gen or excuse me 4000 series RTX card it's got dlss fourth gen it's got third generation RT cores uh it's got Nvidia reflex frame generation like all the stuff you would expect on a 40 series card so there's more to talk about with graphics cards these days than just what is the FPS because of the fact that we're now compared to even a 3080 this is second generation RT cores and third generation dlss or or tensor course so what that means is like the 3080 card isn't even able to take advantage of DLS S3 as you would find in modern titles starting to adopt because of the fact that dlss3 is basically frame generation so it's almost like interpolation where AI is sort of inserting artificial frames in between frames to increase your FPS without having to physically draw them based on the math that's being rendered by the engine so the 3080 cannot do that so what you're going to see in some of the titles that we're going to talk about today is a trading blows between a 3080 and a 40 70. now that doesn't seem all that odd considering the fact that a new incoming 70 series card pretty typically in the past has beaten the outgoing 80 series card but it's complicated this time because we have a TI version but we also have a 90 version and a 90 TI version going out so where there was a wall there with a 70 series card would Trump and beat the highest tiered previous gen that's that's kind of not the case today so when it comes to like performance anything that enables RT is going to sort of give the 4070 a little bit of an advantage over the 3080 even though it has less RT cores they are faster more efficient cores when it comes to dealing with rt workloads but for memory it's actually running 12 gigabytes of gddr6x which for the 70 series cards didn't typically have the X moniker like you would see the X on like the 3080 3080 TI 30 90 39 TI but the lower end cards one of the ways they start to save some money is by just using standard gddr6 and not the X variant so this is running the fast gddr6 now without boring you guys with a whole bunch of just spect talk because I know there's going to be a lot of spec talk out there we need to talk about how it Stacks up versus its current competitors in its own lineup and the previous generation now I've not had time to do a complete comparison with its AMD counterparts so that's going to be a little bit incomplete right there but we are trying to show you some more data in our charts then we've been showing you in the past so let's go ahead and start with price unfortunately in keeping with typical Nvidia tradition the price is up across the board so this is a hundred dollars more than the previous 70 series model going out and I'm using the air quotes because of the fact that in all of their literature they would have us compare this card to like a 1080 Pascal and maybe even a 1080 TI and like a 40 70 or 30 70 TI because of the fact that the price is comparative at that point so what I mean by that is it's a 599 MSRP it is a 600 graphics card six hundred dollars back in the day was enough to get you a 780 Ti which was like top of the line nothing above it um even last gen it would have got you a 40 a 30 70 TI if you compared it to like the MSRP and such of a 3080 it's only behind what a 3080 was supposed to cost so if you think about it the price being up a hundred dollars doesn't seem like a lot but that is a 20 price jump of the previous 70 series predecessor to now so the successor is clearly more expensive now what does that mean well it means it better be delivering more than 20 of an improvement in performance uplift otherwise you're just getting the same FPS per dollar which is just pushed the entire chart downward into the higher price range so let's talk about how the performance lines up now instead of doing our our rocker music where you guys can just like see our charts and stuff flip through we're going to kind of go through them one at a time and just sort of talk about them because I don't want to show the charts and then talk about them again we have to see how it compares to that 3080 which is a hundred dollars more and how it compares to that 30 70 which is 100 less compared to 370 TI I don't have one so there's there's that let's start with Shadow the tomb reader no RT the 4070 is still aimed at 100 FPS plus performance in 1440p with DLS S3 and Ray tracing enabled so they're targeting Ray tracing on dlss probably set to balance or somewhere around there and 1440p resolution the thing about Shadow the Tomb Raider is it is an older title so what this shows us is how does it handle an older engine 1080p is pretty much locked in terms of like capped at around 250 240 FPS this is hitting 224 FPS and 1080p as you can see it's actually beating our 3090 strix which for whatever reason we think it was hitting the cap just hard for some reason because it would throttle down in terms of FPS not clock speed so we couldn't really explain that one but compared to the 6950 XT Red Devil it's a little about 10 FPS behind there but as you can see in 1080P it is just handily handing the 3080f butt like by a lot so 224 FPS versus 179 and 1080p no Ray tracing 1440p same story 13 FPS higher but 4K is where things start to look a little bit different it's losing in 4k 88 FPS for the 3080 versus 83 for the 40 70. and the reason why the charts go all the way up to the 40 90 is just so that you can kind of see where like how the linear scale sort of goes so shadow of the Tomb Raider RT on remember RT is only used in Shadows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider ironically it's in the name but if we go ahead and take a look at the 4070 Fe again handedly beating the 3080 across the board with the exception of 4K it matched at 59 FPS that's pretty impressive there's no dlss on by the way in our tests right now in this video dlss is not on this is raw core for core comparison between its own brothers and sisters of video cards so the fact that it can match the 3080 in 4k uh it's pretty impressive when this card is not intended to do that even with rt on but if we go ahead and take a look at something like the uh 6950 x t Red Devil um you can see it's in 1080P it's a bit faster in 1440p comparable 114 to 117 and then in 4k the Red Devil is beating it because it has a higher frame buffer more memory and just overall a little bit faster of a graphics card when it comes to handling that level of workload but it's a it's a stout little card I say little this is a standard size card okay let's be honest this is standard size this this stuff over here is compensating for what I don't know so time spy extreme it was funny because I start with time spy typically and uh it did not scale as well as I thought so if you look at the numbers just straight up the third versus the 3080 it's it's a it's a significant amount behind it's a few like 300 points behind almost exactly 300 points it's behind the 30 90 strix but when you see on the other charts um that's not the case when it comes to actual gaming so this is why like when it comes to synthetics versus games it's important to test the games because the synthetics just don't paint the entire story take your working gaming experience to the next level with the ViewSonic xg340c2k Ultra wide high-end display the xg340c2k 34 inch 100 Hertz Ultra wide monitor features HDMI 2.1 AMD freesync premium Pro 1000r curved screen Visa display HDR 400 and one millisecond response time for the ultimate immersive gaming experience and take control of multiple devices with KVM support while also taking full control of your display via the elite display controller to see the full list of specs and features follow the sponsored Link in the description below so if we move back here to Borderlands 3. again this is a heavily like AMD favorite title for the most part it took a 40 90 to beat a 7900 XTX and that's not surprising considering the fact that the 4090 is so powerful but let's look at the 40 70. 160 FPS and 1080 114 and 1440 and 61 in 4k the irony that this is still being touted is a 1440p card even though it's still achieving some serious performance in 4k 68 61 FPS it's nice to see when it's not targeted at that but it loses in 4k to the 3080 I think that's probably going to honestly just be Shader core count to be honest and 1440p it's a little bit slower so cyberpunk 2077 with no RT we'll talk about RT in a second it's it's a very there's a big gap between 4K 1080P and 1440. it's a modern title it's very hard to run which definitely shows that that Gap there but if we go ahead and compare it to the 3080 they're pretty much matched at 1080p a little bit slower at 1440 85 85 versus 81 and then 30 80 had 41 FPS versus 36 and 4K with dlss off by the way in cyberpunk it definitely cuts the performance in half like every time you up the resolution so if the LSS was on especially since it now has dlss 3.0 or frame generation integration in there it is significantly increases the performance as you guys saw in our laptop video when we looked at the 4090 laptop Edition graphics card so yeah it's it's scaling pretty well it's uh beating at 40 or 30 70 as you can see 103 FPS versus 129 and 1080. 67 versus 81 and 1440 and 32 versus 36 in 4k but when you turn RT on and this is going to be something you're going to notice across the board as we look at the charts with the RT on the third generation RT course really do start to show their power and efficiency versus the second generation RT course and realistically you should have had a 2070 on here so you guys could see that a huge generational jump between 20 30 and 40 series cards with rt the 3070 Fe got 46 FPS with Ray tracing on versus the 4070 Fe getting 63 FPS in 1080P with rt on 28 FPS and 1440 for the for the 3070 and jumps up to 39. again these numbers are very low RT this this game is basically a playable Benchmark if you don't run dlss or FSR 2.1 or anything like that as you can see it actually beats the 3080 and 1080 and matched it exactly the same numbers for both 1440p and 4K so already looking like a good value versus the 3080 if you were coming from an older generation graphics card and then of course the farther up the stack you go the numbers just get way out to the right which is always fun to have big powerful graphics card like that um Gears of War 5 again very linear as you can see here the 30 70 135 and 1080. um the 30 80 165 and 1080 and the 40 70 all the way up to 199 FPS in uh 40 in in 1080. here's the thing though if you take a look with the exception of the 3070 down there these numbers are not that far apart they're very close together and that just has sort of to do with the way the engine runs with game games of War Gears of War 5. so the chart although it does start at zero you can see the numbers although there is a curve there are very close together it's not these big spread out gaps Guardians of the Galaxy no RT looks like a cluster until you look at 4K because of the fact that both 1440 and 1080 pretty much hit the FPS cap in this game so that's why if you look at the purple line there which is 4K you'll see the the line curve but then you look at 1080 and 1440 and it's just like this because everything is so close to the engine cap and this is why we show these titles that have engine caps like this because there becomes a diminishing return where depending on the graphics card you go with and the resolutions you play at you might just Peg the engine cap which is just meaning you have a lot of performance left on the table depending on the titles that you play so sometimes it is easy to overspec a graphics card although it's never it never makes sense to say I'm gonna get a lower end graphics card because I might cap it no you're going to get a high-end graphics card at least the best one you can afford because of the fact that you want it to last longer into the future as titles come out and become harder to run with rt on things spread out like they should because RT puts a big load on the graphics card so 1080p 4090 as you can see still hits that FPS cap ironically the 40 70 TI and the 4080 outperform the 4090 strix in that particular title because of CPU bottleneck but if you look at the 4070 Fe 150 FPS versus the 3070s 116 in 1080 105 and 1440 versus 30 70s 82. and 56 in 4k versus the 370s 45 so a pretty significant performance boost there if you take a look at the 3080 once again it's beating the 3080 by 10 FPS in 1080. but 1440p and in 4k it's a little bit trailing the 3080 in in RT which is kind of surprising because typically the RT stuff we're seeing the the 4070 do better pretty much the exact same story as our our previous chart as Guardians of the Galaxy RT on the same thing with Metro Exodus 470 40 80 are just literally at each other's heels it's like watching a good auto race where someone is constantly like battling for the lead and they're kind of like doing this Tango it looks a lot like that so that leaves us with value it depends on which end of the spectrum you look at this do you look at this as going wow this really is nipping at the heels of the previous Flagship card for 100 less or do you say wow it's only a little bit fast I say a little bit because it could be anywhere as little as five percent or 25 faster than a 30 70. but for a hundred dollars more and the thing is once you look at the 4070 TI which I've looked at some other charts already from some of their own sanity stuff they send us but we don't use their charts we we have to create our own it does beat the 40 70 or the 3070 TI a lot not as bad as the 3070 but again at the same price you could argue that and say look it's more performance for the same dollar but we can also say you've lifted the price of the entire ecosystem and the 40 series cards across the board but there's one other thing we haven't even talked about here and that is the efficiency of this card if nothing else is impressive about this card let it be this everything you just saw was with a Max gaming wattage that I observed in our own test rig of about 188 to 185 Watts let's not forget the 3080 is a 320 watt Plus tgp Card the 30 70 TI is also right around 300 watts to 320. so depending on the title and the type of load like when the RT cores are going and dlss tensor cores are going and the Cuda cores are going you'll see full tgp which is total Graphics power it's pretty impressive that you can have 588 Cuda cores 12 gigabytes of gddr6x memory running 4K and not even hitting 200 watts of power there's a reason why I think that is though I firmly believe this card could have been a 3 or 250 watt card I think this this card could have significantly had more performance available to it I think this card is a victim of what Nvidia tried to do with the 4080 4070 TI and because they had to move that card down an entire tier into a TI model I think this was intended to always be the 4070s ti card not a 4070. so I do feel like it has been potentially artificially locked down on maybe weight or die size as well as board power so I can look at that and say that's slimy if that's the way it went down it's also pretty impressive if you think about the kind of power a 4080 and even well not really a 4080 40 is not as bad but a 40 90 pull in no up to 500 watts can do when it's actually efficiency is is kind of in the forethought of its design this card basically uses just about 10 watts more than the laptop RTX 4090 mobile GPU that we just looked at ironically it underperforms compared to it that laptop Beats this card because remember that laptop was beating the 3090 and this card is not so efficiency wise the laptop's actually more impressive if you want to know the truth but the 4070 is a is I think a is an unfortunate victim of the the naming scheme and I do feel like this card was destined for more and I think if it was given a 225 watt power limit with on with less shaped Cuda cores versus a 4070 TI which has 2 000 Mish more you could have given this card over 6400 or so Cuda cores up the power limit and I think this thing would have been an absolute Beast why they left such a gap between the 40 70 and 40 70 TI I don't understand the gap between a 4080 and a 40 90 makes sense because there's perfect room for a 4080 TI to sit there but there's we're going to do a 4070 super again are we gonna bring super back and put it between in front of the ti because there's enough room there anyway um I'm fairly indifferent towards this card I think if you have 600 to spend and looking at all of our data when I look at my entire sheet of GPU results not just the ones that you know we've made fit in the chart here I think for 600 it's a solid performer if you're looking for 1440p high-end gaming AAA titles with dlss turned on and Ray tracing turned on and you want all the graphics and the Fidelity and stuff I just feel like this could have been a Cinderella Story had the card even been 50 less so 600 for a 70 series tier it's the most expensive 79 TI thing we've seen yet and I guess it's just keeping Trend with what we're expecting to see I'm pleased with its performance I'm not blown away by it I'm not excited by it I think If This Were A 4.99 card it would have been an entirely different conclusion alright guys thanks for watching sound off down below if you've been waiting for the cards to move their way down the price tier without spending two thousand dollars on a card are you interested in spending 600 on a 40 70 or are you just gonna hang on to whatever graphics card it is you've got for just a little bit longer because guess what 4060s got to be next but how is that going to perform because there's not a lot of room now between 30 series cards just stepping on the 40 series cards if you think about how much they have to shave it down now because of their artificial naming sound off Down Below guys thanks for watching we'll see in the next one
