advisors and instructors for encouraging me all the way. - Thank you. - Thanks to your support,
now I can say I am a Phoenix. - [Man] I am a Phoenix. - [Woman] I am a Phoenix. - [Woman] I am a Phoenix. (upbeat music) - [Woman] And now University of Phoenix, Chief Academic Officer and
Provost, Dr. John Woods. (soft music) - Hello and welcome to our November, 2021
virtual commencement. I'm Dr. John Woods, Chief
Academic Officer and Provost for University of Phoenix. We are honored to be part
of this celebration of you, our amazing graduates and your
incredible accomplishment. We're so proud of you,
and this is your day. Our virtual commencement allows
more people to participate, more people to celebrate with you no matter where you happen to be. We all need reasons to celebrate. And I can't think of a better
reason than to honor you, the class of 2021. Graduates, remember to
check out your special and personalized
commencement ceremony slide at the end of our presentation. Instructions will be shared
later in the program. Also, please take some time to share your thoughts in the chat. Post now where you're joining us from. We have graduates and family
from all over the world online together now. Today we have graduates
joining us from all 50 states, Washington DC, Guam, Puerto
Rico, and seven countries. The Bahamas, Canada, Singapore,
Turks Lagos, Bermuda, and South Africa. Welcome all. What you've done is
remarkable for many reasons. And here's one that's worth emphasizing. The overwhelming majority of
you are working adult learners. In the 1970's, John Sperling,
the founder of this university recognized before anyone
else that working adults have different needs than
traditional college students. This was significant
because no college before had considered those needs or that they might be
equally important to address. Working adults were being mostly excluded from higher education. Dr. Sperling had a
fundamental understanding of adult learners that they're
balancing work, families and life commitments. They simply cannot attend
full-time semesters, and they want faculty with
real world experience. Two thirds of your caregivers. During the pandemic, we've
seen more recognition of how important caregiving
contributions are for our children, our
elderly family members, and our loved ones with mental
and physical conditions. If you are a caregiver graduating today, I encourage you to take special pride in your accomplishment. You're now a graduate of
the new career university. You've just joined a
powerful professional network and a community of more
than 1,000,000 graduates. It's extraordinary that
you've achieved this milestone as adults balancing everything else in your lives with school. That's the first reason why what you've accomplished is amazing. You've balanced working, caregiving and countless commitments
with your own learning, assignment deadlines, discussion boards, and even learning team collaboration. You deserve to be celebrated. I wanna share with you that I was a first-generation
college student. I used this as an excuse with my parents, maybe a little too often to
explain why I did so poorly when I first went to college. Although my current job may
make you think otherwise, I was not a good college
student when I attended right out of high school. In fact, it took me
just shy of seven years to complete my undergraduate degree. More than half of you are
first-generation college students, close to 60%. That's a big deal. It means you may not have had a role model who influenced you to go to college. The statistics tell us that
first-generation college students graduate at
significantly lower levels than non first-generation
college students. Your accomplishment
today reaches beyond you. If you have pre-college
kids or plan to have kids in the future, you've
just increased the chance your children will complete
college by about 50%. Because of your hard
work, your sacrifices, your accomplishments, you are
not only a graduate today, but you are also potentially
influencing someone important to you to also finish
college in the future. My hope for those of you
with kids is the same, because completing college
can change the trajectory of your life, of your family's life and for future generations. Finally, I think it's important
to recognize and thank those that were there along
the way to support you. Family members that cared for your kids, or cooked countless dinners, while you worked on your class projects, the friends who were there, even if only through a text
message or a video chat to say how proud they are of you. Employers who saw the value
in what you were achieving, and the university faculty
and staff who helped guide you from being a University of Phoenix student to a graduate of Phoenix. Now sit back, or stand up, or jump up and enjoy the celebration of you. You've worked so hard, but you did it. And we're all so proud of you. Thank you. (soft music) - I love this story. It's a mother-son team who
are both graduating today from the University of Phoenix. (audience applauds) - It's rough out here,
especially for a young man. He needs an education. - She came with a bet. - What if I go to school with you? I'll make a bet. If you go to school, I'll go to school. That's exactly how I said it. (soft music) - [Man] Ardelia stated to us,
"How could I preach education when I didn't go to school?" So she led by example. - It was great to be able
to go one night a week, get my homework done and
still be able to work 40, 50 hours a week. - [Man] The biggest takeaway
was that they would motivate each other to succeed at school. - I felt like if I didn't
succeed, he wasn't gonna succeed. - The times I was down and
getting frustrated with school thinking I can't do it
and I'm tired of working, she's the one that always motivate me. - [Man] She is a first time
graduate for her generation and he is a first-time
graduate for his generation. - We made it. We made it. - This journey is a family affair. They finished that journey together today, as they walk on stage together
to receive their diplomas. (audience applauds) - [Woman] Ardelia Houston
and Leonard Brown. (audience applauds) - We did it. - (indistinct) Amazing. - I'm so proud of you. We did it. (soft music) I'm very proud of him. - You know what? It proves to me that anything can be done. You're a strong mother. (soft music) - [Woman] We are proud to now
welcome University of Phoenix, faculty member and alumni, Niraj Kohli. (guitar music) - Thank you and hello. My name is Niraj Kohli, I'm
honored to speak to you today, both as a proud faculty
member and a fellow Phoenix. Today, I would like to
take just a few minutes to tell you my story and
how I came to be here on this special day. How University of Phoenix
has helped shape my life, and how much we have in common. In 1979, after graduating
from college in India, where I grew up, I decided
to move to the United States, even though I had never lived on my own. Before I left, my father gave
me three pieces of advice; work hard, get an education and help others whenever you can. I arrived to the United States with my father's words in my ear and with only $50 in my pocket. I briefly lived in
Connecticut and California with my brothers, before
long I arrived in Phoenix, accepting a job at Motorola. I wasn't with the company
very long before I realized I could enhance my career
with an advanced degree. Since I was new to the area,
the first place I looked for a master's degree program
was a nearby university. There was no question the
program was excellent, but I learned that completing
it would take five years. Five years! At that point in my life, I wasn't sure that I was
going to stay in Phoenix. And the on-campus program
at another university would have required commitment I wasn't sure I was prepared to make. And of course, I had a full-time
job I needed to focus on. Does that sound familiar? After doing some research, I learned about University of Phoenix, and how Dr. John Sperling
built it around people like me, people like you. I decided that flexibility offered to me by University of Phoenix
was too good to pass up. But there was more to my decision
than a flexible schedule. I also looked forward to
learning alongside classmates who like many instructors,
had real-world experiences that made what I learned more interesting, more relevant, more impactful. My experiences as a
University of Phoenix student changed my life, and I was able to earn an MBA
here in just half the time it would have taken me
at another university. I'm proud to say that in 1983, I was a member of the
second graduating class in university history. You might be wondering how
different University of Phoenix was back then. Well, for starters, we didn't
have our own buildings yet, but for second thought, it is not that different than today. After all, many of you
earned your degrees online and might have never set foot
in a university classroom. During this time, my career
at Motorola began to take off and provided me the
opportunity to live in places like Hong Kong and Singapore. After 20 years, I missed being home with my family in Phoenix and
knew I was ready for a change. Then I remembered the
third piece of advice my father gave me; help
others when you can. And that's when University of
Phoenix changed my life again. In 2001, I joined the
faculty, and since then, I've taught more than 750 courses. The funny thing is, when
I became a faculty member, I thought I was the one giving back, the one sharing my real world
experiences with students. And yes I was, but I
believe I have learned more from my students than
they have learned from me. In fact, you could say, I feel like I'm always on a learning team. That's because I believe
the world is our classroom and University of Phoenix
makes it possible. Thanks to you, what you bring
to the classroom every day. So on your special day, on your behalf of the entire faculty, I want to say thank you for
what you have taught us, what you have taught each other. I wanna conclude today by
returning to the advice my father gave me, which
now is my advice to you. Work hard, get an education,
help others when you can. By being here today, you have demonstrated that
you're already on this path. You have proven that you can work hard, not only in the classroom,
you have done the work and you have put in the
hours in school, at work, and in life, you have
recognized how education can enhance your career, open new doors and improve your quality
of life in many ways. Now I challenge you to
help others when you can. Help someone make a
connection for a new job, help an organization
that's improving community, or offer to mentor a University of Phoenix student or alumni. I think this is the easiest
of the three to accomplish. It doesn't cost you money, only time. Finally, I encourage you to
never lose your curiosity, your passion to acquire
new skills, knowledge, stay current on technology and trends, and always have an eye on what you can do next in your career and in life. Oh, and stay in touch with your faculty. Let them know how you're doing. Reach out if you need advice. I'm still connected
with my former students and I continue learn from them. Thank you for the opportunity
to share my story. Congratulations fellow Phoenixes, and remember, we rise. (upbeat music) - [Woman] And now University
Chief Academic Officer and Provost, Dr. John Woods,
will introduce the reading of the November, 2021
commencement graduate names and conduct the conferral of degrees. - Hello, again, graduates and guests. As with many of our traditional
commencement ceremonies, today I have the distinct
honor of conferring degrees upon our graduates. Although there are a lot of
people participating today, we wanna make sure we
recognize each one of you and acknowledge your hard won achievement. To do this, we'll announce
each individual's name and share their personal
commencement ceremony slide. In the lower left hand
corner of the screen, you'll also see a countdown
for the time remaining until the next degree level is announced. While you're waiting to hear your name, feel free to preview your
personal ceremony slide on the marching order website. You can download and share
it with family and friends on all your favorite
