for encouraging me all the way. - Thank you.
- Thanks to your support. Now I can say I am a Phoenix.
- I am a Phoenix. - I am a Phoenix.
- I am a Phoenix. - [Announcer] And now,
university Chief Academic Officer and Provost, Dr. John
Woods will get us started with a welcome message. - Hello and welcome to our
July, 2021 virtual commencement. I'm John Woods, Chief
Academic Officer and Provost of the University of Phoenix. We're honored to be a part
of this celebration of you, our amazing graduates and your
incredible accomplishment. We're so proud of you
and this is your day. Our virtual commencement allows
more people to participate and more people to celebrate with you no matter where you happen to be. Let's face it, we all
need reasons to celebrate and I can't think of a better
reason than to honor you, the class of 2021. Graduates, remember to
check out your special and personalized
commencement ceremony slide at the end of our presentation. Instructions will be shared
later on in the program. Also, please take some time to share your thoughts in the chat. Post now where you're joining us from. We have graduates and family from all over the world
online together now. Today we have grads joining
us from all 50 States, Washington DC, Guam, Puerto
Rico and 12 countries, Kuwait, Belize, The Bahamas, Germany, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon,
the UK, Canada, Samoa, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon,
the UK, Canada, Samoa, the Republic of Siberia and
South Africa, welcome all. What you've done is
remarkable for many reasons. And here's one that is worth emphasizing. The overwhelming majority
of you are adult learners. In the 1970's, John Sperling, the founder of this university recognized
before anyone else did that working adults have different needs than traditional college students and were being mostly excluded
from higher education. He had a fundamental
understanding of adult learners. They're balancing work, families they can't attend full-time
semesters and they want faculty with real-world experience. At the time, not many agreed
with him, but like you, he showed persistence and
grit transforming his vision into a place for adult learners, for you. And as a university, like
you, we have evolved. You are now a graduate of
the New Career University. You just joined a powerful
professional network of more than 1 million graduates. More than 970,000 of those
follow us on LinkedIn. It's commendable you've
achieved this milestone as adults balancing everything else in your lives with school. That's the first reason why what you've accomplished is amazing. You've balanced, working, caregiving and countless other
commitments with school. Assignment deadlines, discussion boards and even learning teams. For that reason alone
you deserve a big hand. But here's another reason,
more than half of you are first-generation college
students, close to 60%. That's a big deal. I was a first-generation
college student myself. I used this as an excuse with my parents, maybe a little too often
to explain why I did so poorly when I first went to college. Although my current job may
make you think otherwise, I was not a good college student when I attended right out of high school. In fact, it likely took
me longer than many of you to be successful at college. The statistics tell us that first-generation
college students graduate at significantly lower levels than non first-generation
college students. And even more compelling for those of you who are first-generation
college students with us today, if you
have pre-college kids or will have kids in the future, you've just increased the chance those kids will complete
college by about 50%. Think about that, because
of your hard work, your sacrifices, your accomplishments, you are not only a graduate today but you are also potentially
influencing someone important to you to also finish
college in the future. You've increased the chances
of that happening dramatically. My hope for those of you
with kids is the same because completing college
can change the trajectory of your life, of your family's life and for future generations. Finally, I think it's
important to recognize and thank those that were there along the way to support you. Family members that cared for your kids or cooked countless dinners while you worked on your class projects. The friends who were there, even if only through a text
message or a video chat to say how proud they are of you. And the university faculty
and staff who helped guide you from being a University of Phoenix student to a graduate, a Phoenix. Now, sit back or stand up or jump up and enjoy this celebration of you. You've worked so hard and you did it. And we're all so proud of you. Remember, you are now a Phoenix, a graduate of the New Career
University, thank you. - I love this story. It's a mother-son team who
are both graduating today from the University of Phoenix. (audience applauding) - It's rough out here,
especially for young men, he needs an education. - She kinda came with a bet. - What if I go to school with you? I'll make a bet, if you go
to school, I'll go to school. That's exactly how I said it. - [Lecturer] Ardelia stated to us, how could I preach education
when I didn't go to school? So she led by example. - It was great to be able
to go one night a week, get my homework done and still be able to work 40, 50 hours a week. - [Lecturer] The biggest
takeaway was that they would motivate each other
to succeed at school. - I felt like if I didn't
succeed, he wasn't gonna succeed. - The times I was down
and getting frustrated with school thinking I can't do it and I'm tired of working, she's the one that always motivate me. - [Lecturer] She is a first
time graduate for her generation and he is a first-time
graduate for his generation. - We made it, we made it. - [Lecturer] This journey
is a family affair. They finished that journey together today as they walk on stage together to receive their diplomas.
(audience applaud) - [Announcer] Ardelia
Houston and Leonard Brown. - We did it.
- We made it. - So proud of you. I'm very proud of him. - You know what? You proved to me that
anything can be done. You're a strong mother. - [Announcer] We are proud to now welcome University of Phoenix
professor, Christopher Wilson. - Thank you and hello. My name is Christopher Wilson and I am honored to speak to you today, both as a proud faculty member
and as a fellow Phoenix. A few moments ago, we heard
provost Woods talk about grit, we Phoenixes demonstrated everyday. And I'm sure many of you
were nodding your head because you know what it
took to earn your degree. Yes, you earned it. Every class, every assignment, every day. Let's talk about the word grit. Several years ago, I read
the book "Rebel With a Cause" by the founder of the University of Phoenix, Dr. John Sperling. Maybe you've read it too. In the book, Dr. Sperling
tells a story of his dream to create a place where adult learners can achieve their educational goals as a means to building a better
career and a better life. If you want to talk about grit, Dr. Sperling had grit to spare. And as it turns out he needed it. That's because as he sought
to build this institution, he faced two kinds of people. Those who said he couldn't do it and those who said he shouldn't do it, it didn't stop Dr. Sperling. In fact, the obstacles
he faced only fueled him to keep going, and you know
how that feels, don't you? My story is similar to many of yours. I come from a tough background. I served our country in the military. I enrolled in college later in life, and I am the first in my
family to earn a degree. I share this because I want you to know that I know the amount of
work it takes to get here. And how much of that work was
done even before you enrolled in your first class. To illustrate this point, I
want to share with you a story of one of your fellow students, someone from a class that I teach. It's both moving and inspiring. And at least for me, all too familiar. This student, a black man, has a career in healthcare administration. For one of the courses' final assignments, he posted a video that was
deeply personal and relevant. And he talked about how the
pandemic was consuming his life at work, at home and in the community. He reflected on how the social
justice issues weighed on him and those closest to him. And after witnessing so
much pain throughout the day and then seeing it on the news at night, he needed to talk about the
type of leaders he wanted to see in business, in government
and in the communities. We could see how tired he
was mentally, physically, emotionally, but there he was,
bringing his life experience to the assignment, being
completely vulnerable in offering his classmates,
his perspectives and if you believe it, doubting he would get
credit for the assignment. And of course, he received
full credit for it. Today, I live in East St. Louis, Illinois, just across the Mississippi
river from St. Louis. I moved there from a
suburb in Phoenix to teach in the public school systems in St. Louis. East St. Louis and St.
Louis have similar names, but are in two different states and could easily be on
two different planets. And comparing East St.
Louis to suburban Phoenix, in some ways it's like comparing
it to a different galaxy. So why would I choose to
live in East St. Louis? Though the people demonstrate
great love and care, it's a tough city, high
rates of crime and poverty. I did it by design to
bring my life full circle. The University of Phoenix
prepared me for a career. Then it was up to me to
take what I've learned here and use it to elevate
my career and my life. And maybe to make a
difference for someone else who faced lots of challenges
early in their life. Well, now it's time for you
to bring it full circle, to take what you've learned at the University of Phoenix
and apply it in your career. Build a great business, make
an impact in your community or just one person. And guess what? You're ready, you're ready
because you made sacrifices and took the long view toward a better job and a better life. You're ready because
you have done the work. You have put in the hours
and you have shown grit in school, at work and in life. In other words, you earned it. I want to thank you so much for this opportunity to share my story. And if I can ever be of help to you, please don't hesitate to
reach out to me on LinkedIn. Congratulations, fellow Phoenixes. And remember, we rise! (bright music) - I'm now a graduate, woohoo! - After four years of undergraduate and two years of graduate
school, I'm finally done. (bright music) - [Announcer] And now Peter Cohen, President of University of
Phoenix will share thoughts and congratulations on
this very special occasion. - Thank you and what an incredible
program we've had today. I'm honored to be able to
share in this celebration and on behalf of the
university's faculty and staff, I congratulate you on your
remarkable achievement. I admire the grit and persistence it takes to complete your
education as adult learners. You have a lot on your
plates on any given day. Yet you showed up day after
day, class after class and demonstrated a
commitment to your work, to your learning teams and to yourself. You persevered when readings were required or papers were due, when
you were juggling families and jobs all while
balancing financial needs. It is your accomplishment. And we are honored to have
been there as faculty, as graduate support teams
and as administrators. Today's ceremony is called a commencement but not because it's the end
of your college experience but because it's the
beginning of what's next, the opportunities that lie ahead. After all the payoff
is not merely a degree. No, the payoff is the opportunity a degree can unlock for you. Whether you're aiming
for a promotion at work, changing careers, starting
your own enterprise or simply advancing your
knowledge of the world around you. I certainly recognize that
for many of you here today, life and its opportunities have not been a level playing field. And to earn a degree also
meant staring down challenges and adversity that many
haven't had to face. Your higher education
experience is pretty different from traditional college students. In that 2/3 of you are female, more than half of you are people of color. A majority of you are first
generation college students and most of you are supporting
other family members. What's more, most of you
have reached this achievement while juggling family, jobs and
school all at the same time. Over the past 40 years
of my working career, I've met and worked with so many people in so many companies and
industries and observed that most people have worked
just as hard as I have. They can write better,
maybe lead more effectively, manage meetings or projects better and yet they remain in
less prominent roles while others are promoted. Life isn't always fair, I've learned, but your destiny is still in your hands. You've taken a step
towards your brass ring and against many odds,
you completed your degree. You've demonstrated grit. You have proven to be
incredible time managers, capable of skillfully
managing competing priorities. You have shown that you can
focus on the long-term goal and achieve it in spite
of the daily challenges which threatened to
derail you at every turn. And while what you have
learned will help you become more value to your employers, it's what you accomplished,
what you demonstrated in pursuit of your degree
that will propel you forward. Yes, I'm very proud of the
small part that we've played in helping you on your journey but we all know that you did this. You own it. As provost Woods mentioned
earlier, Dr. Sperling founded University of
Phoenix to create a pathway to success for adult learners. But we know that career
paths aren't a straight line. That's why the university is
here to support you today, tomorrow, whenever you
might need us in the future. Our career support for life tools such as career coaching,
mentoring, networking and resume development are here for you. We also have assessment tools if you choose to make a career
change, a new career start or just better prepare for your
current career aspirations. We're committed to being
your career partner, increasing the value of your degree and walking alongside you
during your career journey. You are now a Phoenix and we stick together
supporting one another in our powerful community of more than 1 million alumni strong. Phoenixes are determined,
they are resolute, they never give up,
they always find a way, and they are always full of hope. They exude grit and
determination like no one else. Congratulations Phoenixes,
you have done it. Thank you and enjoy this very special time with your families. And remember, we rise. - [Announcer] And now university
Chief Academic Officer and provost, Dr. John Woods
will introduce the reading of the July, 2021
commencement graduate names and conduct the conferral of degrees. - Hello, again, graduates and guests. As with many of our traditional
commencement ceremonies, today I have the distinct honor of conferring degrees upon our graduates. Although there are a lot of
people participating today, we want to make sure we recognize
each and every one of you and acknowledge your
hard won accomplishment. To do this, we'll announce
each individual's name and share their personal
commencement ceremony slide. In the lower left-hand
corner of the screen, you'll also see a countdown
for the time remaining until the next degree level is announced. While you're waiting to hear your name, feel free to preview your
personal ceremony slide on the marching order website,
phoenix.edu/SummerGrad2021. on the marching order website,
phoenix.edu/SummerGrad2021. You can download and share it with family and friends on all your
favorite social media channels. So without further ado,
let's begin by announcing our associate degree candidates. - [Announcer 1] Ashley Agnew. Maceo Ivy Ali. Brennon Allen. Kimberly Almore. Marylou Alviar. Jeffrey Allen Arbour. Lakesha Nicole Ashford.
