open sesame [Music] can you do oahu without a rental car challenge accepted call this avoiding traffic having more money in your pocket for fine dining or just want to like avoid the stress of having a car we're going to show you how to do oahu without a rental car we are sharing a 70 itinerary to kind of show you how much you can save not getting a rental car and also without losing your mind because you can actually save money by not getting a rental car hi i'm jordan and i'm erica and this is the hawaii vacation guide and we have patty so if you see my hands moving down below that's i'm petting her [Music] so this is a case study we haven't actually done this but we lived on oahu for two years with a car with a car we've traveled there all the time like four times last year because we live on maui so we think this is we don't think we know this is a good itinerary and it can work and it can save you money how much money you have to watch so there's tons of videos and articles out there do you need a rental car not on the island because all the other hawaiian islands you definitely need a rental car but oahu you can get by without a rental car and because of the geography of the island it's big but it's not massive also it's very centralized you can stay in waikiki honolulu is a city of 1 million people so there's a lot to do and see right there in the center of town and plus there's tons of other transport options you have the city bus you got uber you got lyft you got lots of taxis you got car share programs you have beekee bikes there's a lot of ways to get her on the island so let's look at the map here right waikiki is part of honolulu so it has everything right by like dime ahead and shopping and excellent food and then downtown honolulu is this 15 minutes or three miles away from waikiki so you can hop in a taxi or even do a bike ride over there to get to other parts of the island that are popular waikiki to kailua is about 30 minutes away driving waikiki to pearl harbor is only 25 minutes away and then waikiki to hale eva on the north shore it's about an hour and a half away and koalina where aulani resort is the disney resort is 40 minutes away from waikiki you kind of get an idea of the size of the island right there this isn't a huge island but big enough that you're gonna need some wheels we always need a car when we go to oahu and that's because we fall into at least one of these three categories at all times so the three reasons you would definitely want to get a car when you head to oahu is you are staying in either koalina or on the north shore number two you want to do a lot of sightseeing which is always the category we fall into we are always out doing excursions or number three is you just want the ease and accessibility of having a car and you don't mind paying the parking fees and i can't blame you it's nice to sometimes have things easy oh man here's our chariot if you watch this video and you really want to get a rental car we recommend discount hawaii car rental you got a link below they offer great rates they're always the cheapest is who we go with most of the time if we don't go with a local company a good local company is lucky owl but discount hawaii car rental check them out like even military discounts can't compete they do a wonderful job it's so easy and you don't have to pre-pay that's the best part no prepayment and they sell the best rates yeah so jordan had some fun with this and he is a fairly competitive guy so he created a challenge here are the challenge rules if you choose to accept them first this itinerary is for two people and that's for the cost reason of it the other one is you're staying in waikiki because it's central also too it's not just about riding the bus let's i make this as fair and comfortable as possible for your waikiki trip let's give you our first cost estimate if you are to come to oahu and rent a car for seven days we put a whole bunch of numbers together bing bang boom it's a thousand dollars okay i'm just kidding that includes the cost of the rental car gas parking at your hotel which can be very expensive i should mention we have an article that breaks down all the numbers because if you want to go into the numbers into detail like this guy does it is down below so click that link let's jump into the seven day itinerary the number to be the number to be all right so we're trying to beat a thousand dollars okay eric and i talk fast plus we're going to throw tons of beautiful b-roll of hawaii over the top of this so it's going to be distracting for you if you want more information plus links all of our favorite tour operators that we talk about click the and the numbers on this click the link in the description below and give you all the information you need so you don't have to watch this video over and over and over again first getting you out of the airport so we recommend robert's hawaii shuttle it's a shared shuttle service so pick you up right at the airport and drive you to waikiki drop you off your hotel that is about 50 per person round trip how nice is that round trip so 100 total and now you're in waikiki day one you are gonna start off big with a circle island tour we give you links to our favorite tour operators for this but this basically gives you a lay of the land you get to go out and explore oahu so you will see the new uanu pali lookout magnut farm walk the beaches of the north shore explore waimea valley which is beautiful 40 foot waterfall for swimming gotta do it and see the mokoli island costs about 125 times two people 150 for that tour do it early in your trip so you get a better idea of what you want to go back and see again day two best part about staying in waikiki is that pearl harbor is only 25 minutes away so hop in an uber or a taxi and head out to pearl harbor for the day when we go out to pearl harbor it's free it's great well actually it's a dollar to go out to the uss arizona memorial you can spend a lot of time there but we always made a mistake was we'd leave right away we recommend spending the day at pearl harbor because they have all these non-profit museums our favorite one the one we go to every time is the pearl harbor aviation museum we want to thank them for their continued support of this channel pearl harbor aviation museum just has so much to do and see they have two hangers there plus a bob hope exhibit they have hangar 37 and hangar 79 plus they're opening up in 2022 is the air traffic control tower from world war ii it's a classic and one of the big things they're doing especially with those big rains they just had in december is that they need a new roof for hangar 79 this is a world war ii era hanger there's still bullet holes from the infamous day in the windows of the hangar they're like right there i don't know how well you can see it but those bull holes up there are from the pearl harbor air raid yeah we still got them a little time capsule history over here so they want to preserve this hanger and when it rains they have to shut this hanger down so they need to just fix the leaks they need a million dollars and for a for repair they need three million dollars ouch so they're doing the raise the roof campaign to help donate money you can help them out by going to the museum visiting buying a ticket checking it all out if you like to donate to help fix up the roof they have that option for you also so that is how you can spend your full day at pearl harbor and just have a wonderful time checking out pearl harbor and all the other museums there day number three you're not gonna go too far because you are just gonna head into downtown honolulu so you can hop on the bus to get down there or even bike on a bikie bike down there take an uber we love checking out chinatown in the arts district going to iolani palace bishop museums close by two there's a lot to do eat and see around honolulu for the day cost if you take a taxi there we recommend going to aloha tower because that'd be very central and that's 30 now let's relax a little bit that was a lot of excitement two days you're gonna spend two days hanging out in waikiki and the surrounding area and just exploring what there is there just relax waikiki beach you got surf you got stand-up paddle you got sailboat tours that lead directly from the beach you got honolulu zoo there you got hula shows there there's a lot to do in waikiki two days you're not going to get bored you're covered waikiki is very walkable it's only two and a half miles by a half mile deep so let's just say you get some beekee bikes which the rideshare bikes do a couple rides on those that's 18 bucks all right so day number six you love that circle island tour you love the north shore so today you are gonna head back up to the north shore and go to haleiwa town and spend some time checking out the area for an uber ride round trip it's about 75 get some shave ice head to the beach get some really good food you'll have a fun day up there so these uber cost estimates are from the uber fare estimator tool they have online day seven is a little bit of hiking and exploring east oahu you can leave on the waikiki trolley blue line to hop on hop off shuttle service it'll take you up east oahu see all the sights there especially taking a diamond head for some beautiful hiking we love going to diamond ed some people say it's overrated but i think it's a wonderful way to just see the top of waikiki and get out there plus the crater is really cool you can't see a crater like that anywhere else in the country and no no no chance no the blue line trolley is 25 per person so 50 total that brings us to a grand total of 587 we're rounding up to 600 plus you might want to throw in a little bit more for some extra rides and tips things like that so let's call it seven hundred dollars so that's seven hundred dollars for not having a rental car and no stress of having a rental car versus a thousand dollars for getting a rental car that's true that's pretty good so you save 300 it can take you and your partner out to a lovely dinner at roy's or use those 300 so you know get a ticket to the pearl harbor aviation museum a guided tour oh yeah and tony exactly there you go we hope that was good we know that was a fast one like we said click the link in the description below we give you a full cost breakdown plus more details on this wonderful itinerary and if you think this itinerary is good our best itinerary is actually your oahu itinerary you gotta check that out it's got videos in there it tells you where to find parking if you do get a rental car in all of our favorite place plus snorkel spots really it's a great way to see the island it is best done with a rental car so check it out see if it's right for you head to the hawaiivacationguy.com oahu and give it a look thanks for watching thank you
