great but I've waited too long and now my information is everywhere I'm too scared to use my rewards card at the supermarket and now I'm going to starve [Music] so to start we gotta go back 2011. the Wii once a Smash Hit cultural sensation was losing relevance quickly sales had peaked years prior and new games just weren't selling like they used to the hardware was dated even compared to the Aging Xbox 360 and PS3 five years in the weave was slowing down and everybody knew it Nintendo needed a replacement and by mid-2011 reports began to emerge of a new Nintendo machine some would call it the Wii 2 the Wii HD but we finally learned that it was internally referred to as project Cafe a lot of information about this console had leaked well before its official announcement it was reportedly more powerful than the 360 and the PS3 it had a touchscreen controller but not much else was known there were mock-ups potential designs and a lot of room to speculate and in that time many had come to the conclusion that this project Cafe was a hybrid console this hybrid console ID video was a bit of a long-running dream for Nintendo fans the idea that one day Nintendo would combine their handhelds and consoles into one device one ecosystem where portable games could be played on the TV and console games could be played on the go but of course this wasn't the case hey it's uh time to watch some baseball okay [Music] Hernandez is the 3-1 pitch swinging enemies 98 mile per hour fastball it was the Wii U in the Wii U's Gamepad was really just a traditional controller with the screen it couldn't play the games by itself it just displayed the visuals from the console now there's many reasons for the Wii U's failure but I'm sure this initial confusion did at least contribute to initial low sales it was apparent quickly after launch that Nintendo was in a dark place the Wii U was a commercial disaster failing to live up not only to its predecessor but lagging behind every other traditional Nintendo console the successor to the very successful DS the 3DS was also not selling particularly well at this time there was no expectations for the device to take off since many industry analysts assume that this mobile game Market had made dedicated handhelds irrelevant and it didn't help that Sony and Microsoft were getting ready to launch their highly anticipated next-gen consoles many questioned whether Nintendo would even remain in the hardware business after this some believe that Nintendo's prior success with the DS and we were just luck or an outlier they had the right gimmick at the right time and place after all this user base was primarily casual users who had had their fun and moved on others believed that the console industry as a whole was on the decline being replaced by the emerging smartphone industry in Mobile gaming to them the Wii U was an expected failure and they also expected the upcoming Xbox One and PS4 to underperform as well but after the successful launch of the PS4 in particular these analysts were proven wrong the console industry was not dead but that did not help Nintendo one bit as the new consoles consumed the media and Gamers attention many were just waiting for Nintendo to pull a Sega to go third party and developed games for the competitors more successful platforms but pretty quickly it became apparent that this might not be the case on January 21st 2014 we got bizarre reports coming out describing a new Nintendo console called the fusion even with the Wii U being just over a year old we were seeing rumors of a successor this was supposedly a direct response to the Wii U's failure it would be a hybrid of sorts consisting of two separate devices the Fusion DS and the fusion terminal the terminal would be a traditional Home console while the Fusion DS would function as both a controller and a dedicated handheld both devices would support the same games but on the console you would have access to more horsepower the rumor suggested this was Nintendo's attempt to get third parties on board and compete head on with the other console manufacturers the terminal would potentially support up to 4K video outputs although it was never clarified whether it would support 4K gaming specifically but the spec suggested that the fusion terminal could be well beyond the newly released Xbox One and PS4 in some aspects every technical detail became a point of content or scrutiny but at the time these specs weren't all that unexpected sure a Nintendo machine outperforming Microsoft and Sony sounds bizarre but Nintendo had worked with AMD in the past and if this console was early in development these specs might be pretty realistic in a few years but the rumor got a lot of people hyped those who felt that the Wii and Wii U Were underpowered were excited to see Nintendo get back in the game but some dismissed the rumors simply due to the timing of it all this was just 14 months after the Wii U had released even if the console had had a slow start there was no reason to expect that Nintendo was throwing in the towel so soon Not only would this punish the early adopters of the Wii U Nintendo's most devoted fan base it also wouldn't Inspire confidence in future Hardware if the company was moving on so quickly and as this rumor cooled down many had come to the conclusion that it was just wishful thinking and it probably would have stayed that way but then something happened on February 2014 about two weeks after the fusion rumor began president of Nintendo satoru Iwata had confirmed that Nintendo was working on new hardware this came as quite a surprise not only because it was so early in the Wii U's life cycle but there was also some other details that seemed to give legitimacy to the fusion report Iwata said that porting Wii U games to 3DS and vice versa had been a major challenge the two devices were just too different from one another technically speaking working with two platforms handheld in console it meant that Nintendo's development teams were dividing their attention this was a problem since Nintendo's bread and butter was its first party releases and sometimes the platform could go months if not longer without a new major title to solve this Nintendo was working on a new integrated development Platform One platform that combined both handheld and console in the development teams had already begun this process this would all be very necessary for something like the Nintendo Fusion to work Iwata explain how the primary info inspiration for this idea came from IOS and Android operating systems these mobile operating systems allowed new devices to be released all the time while supporting the same applications he mentioned how this Nintendo integrated platform wasn't necessarily referring to One Singular device it could be several devices it could be handhelds consoles even hybrids were mentioned or it could be something else entirely this would allow Nintendo to experiment to see what the customers like the most and then Focus their efforts on the preferred platform after this it was difficult to ignore the fusion rumor given the timing and conversation of multiple devices the integrated development platform this was sounding like a legitimate leak however others took this in a different direction the way it sounded was like the fusion concept was just one of these many Nintendo devices in the comparisons Iwata made to IOS and Android made some assume a Nintendo smartphone was on the way this wasn't too bizarre at the time the dip in 3DS sales numbers seem to be caused by Nintendo's new found competition with the mobile market these were some brief details but more than enough to get people speculating but without real information we'd have to wait until the end of the year before things would begin to pick up again in December 2014 the Japan times reported that Nintendo would be the first company to use Sharp's new free-form displays these screens were not constrained to just rectangles they were free form any shape you want given that this report came from a major media outlets and that Nintendo had previously worked with sharp for the 3D display technology in the 3DS it was taken as fact the Assumption was that this was for the Fusion DS or a Nintendo smartphone but nobody really knew why this device would need a free-form display amd's CFO discussed upcoming contracts for custom semiconductors these custom contracts are deals that AMD makes with other companies to produce custom chips they announced two contracts one of them was for an arm-based processor but it's not related to gaming and it's not imported to the story the other contractors for an x86 chipset starting with the Xbox One and PS4 both Microsoft and Sony adopted AMD in this x86 architecture meaning that porting games from PC to these boxes would be simpler Nintendo had worked with AMD before for the Wii U's Graphics however the CPU was powered by IBM using the powered PC architecture if Nintendo was moving to x86 it implied that this new console whatever it was would be more in line with Microsoft and Sony's offerings Nintendo might be trying to get support from third-party developers considering it had been just over a year since Microsoft and Sony released their platforms it was believed that this contract had to be for a new Nintendo machine but that wasn't necessarily true just a few months prior a user on the Beyond 3D forums noticed in interesting detail Tale on the LinkedIn profile of the senior manager of socs at AMD included was a description of the manager's work on the 28 nanometer Xbox One epu but it also mentioned how work was being done on a new 20 nanometer chipset with other details included this seemed to suggest that an Xbox One slim was in development this AMD contract was probably not for Nintendo but not many people knew that unless you were following all of this stuff carefully it would be very easy to assume that any new console being made around this time would have to be for Nintendo in many websites reported that this AMD contract was probably for a new Nintendo console now there was no reason to believe that Nintendo wasn't going to go with AMD with an influx of news regarding the Nintendo Hardware many expected that announcement of some sort would be right around the corner on March 17 2015 Nintendo in a truly unexpected move held a conference announcing that they were partnering with Japanese mobile company DNA Nintendo was making phone games Iwata made it clear that no Nintendo console or handheld titles would be ported over to phones these would be holy original games designed to take advantage of devices without controllers now for those following along in real time there was immediate Panic was Nintendo leaving the console Market was this the end and Iwata knew that this was going to be the reaction so alongside this he made it very clear that Nintendo was remaining in the hardware business and to emphasize this Nintendo formally announced their new platform the NX the NX was the integrated platform that Nintendo spoke of in early 2014. it would be a modern platform and the online services would be completely overhauled games would be tied to a user's account rather than the hardware itself Nintendo tried to make it clear that this was not a success to the Wii U this was a third pillar of sorts designed to work alongside existing Hardware rather than replace it but most people knew this wasn't true the same strategy had also been used to announce the DS When the Game Boy advanced and GameCube were still in production the whole conversation changed after this conference the console was no longer just rumors or vague speculation it was a thing that had a name kind of Nintendo said we will not talk about this until next year 2016. this wasn't like a normal console announcement other than a code name in the fact that it was improving on the Wii U's online functionality nobody knew anything about it but the NX it could be anything anything you wanted and everybody wanted something groups began to form people with like-minded expectations for this thing someone in Nintendo to continue their strategy that had worked well for the Wii and the DS do something bold indifferent to differentiate themselves from the competition others wanted just a smartphone a handheld that played Nintendo games that could also function as an all-in-one device even though Iwata had said that traditional Nintendo games would not be ported to Android maybe they'd make an exception for this device but a lot of people just wanted power a console that would not only compete with the Xbox one and PlayStation 4 but potentially surpass it each side had good arguments but nobody really knew anything although for some reason many people still expected Nintendo to reference the NX at E3 2015 those hopes were dashed fairly quickly this gave people more time to speculate it also gave people more incentive to create their own rumors on June 1st 2015 a widely reported story began to circulate that the NX would actually be running on Android Nintendo was making a smartphone this was not well received although it did seem possible with the DNA connection I wanted statements about mobile operating systems not to mention the freeform displays team smartphone took this as a concrete Victory however even those that accepted this rumor as true weren't convinced this was a smartphone around this time Android was powering the Nvidia Shield line and some assumed that a hybrid console could still work on Android this still caused a lot of chaos and Nintendo uncharacteristically stepped in to put out the fire they've released a statement saying the NX is not running on Android Nintendo rarely comments on rumors although clearly they had a fear that invest would believe that they were abandoning the consul Market since it was highly unlikely that they tried to enter the phone market with their own proprietary operating system team smartphone Was Defeated with e3 coming gone and no word from Nintendo rumors continued to pile up [Music] AMD announced that it had another custom semiconductor chip contract to go alongside the two previous contracts now it was not detailed whether this was for a game console or x86 or arm but the CEO had stated that this design would contribute to potentially a billion dollars in lifetime sales connecting the dots wasn't too difficult and many came to the conclusion that this was a second chip being designed for a game console the first contract was clearly for a new Xbox One slim but the second probably was for Nintendo I mean maybe there was always the possibility that Sony was working on its own Hardware revision however most people seem to assume that both of these contracts were just for Nintendo they thought one would be for the handheld and one would be for the console many people were still in the mindset that the fusion rumor was correct or at least somewhat representative of what Nintendo was trying to do on June 24th neogaf users began to claim that the NX would tie in heavily to Nintendo's Quality of Life program Nintendo was never too clear on the intentions for this project it was some sort of healthcare Fitness initiative likely inspired by the success of games like Wii Fit the most we had ever seen of this was the Vitality sensor which would possibly measure a player's heartbeat with Nintendo remaining quiet on the quality of life program many saw this as a real possibility and speculated that it would be integrated into games as a way to monitor emotions or other bodily functions for some it seemed realistic because they had no faith in Nintendo producing a worthwhile gimmick for the particularly jaded this seemed entirely possible given Nintendo's recent history on July 1 2015 a video was uploaded to YouTube from a user going by the name hiberius 56 the account was created just a day prior and the video claimed to show a leaked presentation of the Nintendo NX it was supposedly called the Nintendo cross and allowed users to stream games to smart phones tablets in existing Wii U gamepads to the modern eye it seems clearly fake showing existing gameplay of Wii U titles with the general language used being very un Nintendo but many had believed it and even Business Insider had to make an article debunking it without concrete news these rumors were getting somewhat wacky nobody had to wait too long before something new came along though and this time it had a bit more substance on July 28th Square Enix said something odd for some reason they confirmed that Dragon Quest 10 in the newly announced Dragon Quest 11 were coming to the NX now Nintendo had said no NX news would be revealed in 2015. in square quickly shifted to a statement that a port was in consideration but it was clear that they had messed up Dragon Quest 11 a newly announced game for an unannounced platform would be weird but announcing a port of an older game to an unannounced platform pretty much confirmed it now this didn't really tell anybody anything about the since it never clarified whether these would be mobile ports or the full console versions given amd's statements though many had assumed the latter on August 20th 2015 the first patents were made public that appeared to relate to the Nintendo NX now there is never a guarantee that a patent applies to a specific product or whether the company would even use this patent but when it comes to new consoles especially Nintendo consoles is possibly the best indication you can get of what's coming next in the past every word from an official Source was deconstructed and speculated on for weeks but with a massive document like this there would be discussions on every element of this patent for months named the stationary game apparatus game apparatus game system recording medium and speed control method this really became the focus of the NX discussion there's a console of sorts that feeds information to a handheld storing the game on the handheld so it can be taken on the go it had elements of the Wii U alongside DS download play but this all seemed to specifically function for a hybrid console there is also mentions of cartridges or devices with no cartridges or disks this spurred its own set of rumors many believe that the NX would use cartridges as it seemed odd to mention such a detail for what was assumed to be a Home console while this could be applicable to the handheld it would make sense that Nintendo would want to provide the same games on the same medium for multiple devices some believed that the NX would support 512 gigabyte cards as the hardware was so far beyond the Xbox One and PS4 that this new storage format would be mandatory to hold these massive new games however many eventually came to the conclusion that the patent was describing many devices at once any reference to a storage medium or discs was probably just Nintendo covering themselves for the future and not necessarily indicative plans for a single NX device on September 17 2015 a patent was made public that Nintendo filed back in February of that year it featured a fairly standard design of the handheld device but with only two face buttons the interesting part was these shoulder buttons that could scroll but largely people were just confused of what use cases this design would offer the next day a new patent was made public that described haptic feedback when a touch screen was pressed some believe that this could be Nintendo's way of making up for a lack of buttons by simply vibrating the device when you press the touchscreen both of these patents painted a very interesting picture of the NX on October 16 2015 The Wall Street Journal released a report about the NX they claimed that Nintendo was sending out Dev kits for the NX in that it was two separate machines a handheld and a console the report stated that the NX would have industry-leading chips and that Nintendo had learned its lesson from the Wii U the NX would be a Powerhouse given the fact that this report was released by The Wall Street Journal it was absolutely assumed to be true Nintendo was likely trying to Garner all the third party support it could get if these developer kits were going out so early with that statement that Nintendo had learned its lesson this would have to be a traditional console while taking things a step further this report seemed to shift the conversation of these contracts entirely very few people were interested in the Xbox One slim listing and mostly took this as just another rumor instead many took this as confirmation that Nintendo did have both contracts I'm sure to sum the idea of Nintendo developing a console that would outclass Microsoft and Sony seems bizarre since Iwata became president of the company they've never made any indication that they cared about power Nintendo had for the past decade by this point placed its trust in the idea of a Blue Ocean strategy this idea in marketing and business refers to the concept that all business ventures can be really divided into two groups there's the red ocean which represents all products and industries that currently exist and are successful and the blue ocean which represents industries that don't really exist yet or aren't fully developed and so they have less competition this is why every new console or handheld seems to have a new gimmick however with the failure of the Wii U some expected Nintendo might try something new and jump into that red ocean compete with PlayStation and Xbox head on in the handheld Market Nintendo was starting to find more success with the 3DS although the 3D technology was divisive and arguably detrimental to the product's success depending on who you asked with the exception of the Wii every new Nintendo Home console had sold less than its predecessor generation over generation some believe Nintendo's greatest mistake was misplaced trust in the Casual Market most of those who were buying Wiis were not becoming lifelong fans of the company they weren't lining up for the Wii U at the same time there was a lot of demand for more powerful Hardware well outside the Nintendo Community many just felt that the Xbox One and PS4 were lacking behind PC tech at the time they had low end CPUs lack solid state drives amongst other Oddities some suspected that this was because Microsoft and Sony had become hesitant to spend too much money developing this they wanted to minimize losses in case the mobile market was going to take off and they focused solely on the GPU over everything else there were rumors circulating that Publishers like Ubisoft were downgrading visuals on PC so the new consoles wouldn't be too embarrassed by the competition so many people were interested if Nintendo could raise the bar on December 3rd 2015 we got a new patent that had been filed more than a year prior and it seemed to show a lot it described a core game console and a supplemental Computing device this could be accessible from anywhere the core console would sit at your home and provide computing power for multiple devices potentially a handheld or smartphones or laptops it was cloud computing you could share your power with other users and be rewarded with financial compensation or extra games the cloud gaming and processing angle seemed a bit odd many assumed this would be why Nintendo wanted that integrated platform it was more than a hybrid console and a few days later another patent was made public it appeared to be using Sharp's freeform displays much like those reports from 2014 had said but this design was very divisive for one it didn't have buttons just two analogs jutting out for some this killed the hype immediately Nintendo had been notorious for test testing out new control methods and it wouldn't be too surprising if they abandoned buttons If Nintendo was planning on streaming games to phones like the previous patent listed maybe a touch screen interface would make sense unlike many of the other NX rumors this couldn't be too easily dismissed it was from Nintendo it was a patent it lined up perfectly with past reports but if the Wall Street Journal report was true how could Nintendo have learned their lesson if they didn't put buttons on their own controller the start of 2016 came with a lot of expectations Nintendo had said they would wait until 2016 to start discussing the NX and for some reason people believed Nintendo might start doing this on January 1st but Nintendo stayed silence and once again the rumors began to pick up the slack industry Insider Liam Robertson claimed to have received a survey from a reliable source this survey include details about the NX claiming that it was two separate devices included a sensor bar in the vein of the Wii U supported 4K video streaming and had a video call system achievements like Xbox offered or PlayStation trophies would also be integrated into NX games but one detail made the community upset there was mention of games running at 900p 60fps at this time this would be about on par with XBox One releases and even the PS4 wouldn't always manage 60 FPS but many expected the nx2 surpass these resolution and frame rates are not always indicative of specs although when generalized like this it seemed to indicate a machine that was closer to the PS4 rather than being some next-gen Hardware there was a leaker going around with some credibility known as Gino Gino was kind of a controversial figure their track record was at times exceptionally good while also getting other leaks very very wrong Gino reported that the NX was about as powerful as an Xbox one but it featured a wireless HDMI dongle alongside this it would support Bluetooth connectivity that allowed you to receive phone calls in texts but many were skeptical especially with that wireless HDMI dongle in those who went to the source the first interview were left unconvinced going through it's honestly difficult to read and I'm not sure if this is just because of the text formatting issues and most of these statements are just technobabble nonsensical statements that are thrown around with a loose understanding of game developments like discussing the Android operating system like it's a game engine after this got a lot more attention Gino's track record was looked at with closer inspection insides began to form in the community of those who believed Gino in those who did not Gina would follow all this up with a report of new titles coming to the NX including an upcoming Call of Duty Bloodlines and Beyond Good and Evil 2. the question of Geno's legitimacy became the first big rift in this community but it wouldn't last too long so initially a user on Reddit posted this image which was supposedly an image of the NX or the NX controller now there's always different kinds of Hardware leaks but this one actually looked convincing mostly some believe that the thumb sticks were photoshopped in others took issue with the screen not appearing to give out light bounces everybody had an opinion but most just wanted this to be fake obviously this was inspired by the controller patent a few days later new images appeared on Reddit from a different account that showed a nearly identical device but with a different color scheme the odds of two leaks two realistic looking leaks appearing one after the other seemed like an amazing coincidence initially users believe the keyboard in the image to be Swedish while later it was revealed to be finished people looked at the Reflections in the glass and some believe they could match the reflection with this tree outside massive entertainment developers of the division a reporter at gaming former had posted on Twitter that these images aligned with what he had heard but couldn't confirm whether the images were real or not team Geno was winning or so it seemed image analysis showed that the display on the white NX had been photoshopped something that many people suspected the first image also included a Post-It note with the words you will say wow which was kind of an inside joke for Nintendo fans at E3 2005 Iwata had said that the graphics of the upcoming Nintendo Wii would make you say wow a line that was mocked as people would say wow for how bad the games looked in comparison with Computing platforms the fact that this was the first leak and it was definitely fake meant that the second leak also had to be fake and was probably a copycat to fuel the fire and just a week later the leakers came forward they had the means to create these convincing leaks from their work and expertise and it was simply for fun since these leaks were now confirmed to be hoaxes it actually had a massive impact on the conversation surrounding Geno see Gino was interesting because only one website seemed to take them as a reliable source every article on the site that mentioned Gino would praise all the things that they had gotten right but it also ignored everything that Gino had gotten wrong but even on this website it was just one author One journalist who seemed to even be in contact with Gino this reporter also claimed that this image was an exclusive leak for the site even though this image was posted on Reddit by a guy who seemed to have no association with the site or the journalist now this was a bit interesting to me so I went through the way back machine and found that 10 years ago the site had biographies for each of its writers on this particular journalist's page they noted that they were the youngest writer on the website doing some basic math it seemed like the author of these articles the only person to be able to contact Gino was 15 or 16 at the time these reports were published now to be honest and I'm just guessing here I wouldn't be surprised if this journalist was Geno after this incident with the photos proven as fake The journalist's credibility was destroyed as was Gina's it was odd how one controversial figure could divide the community so quickly but this was nothing compared to what was about to happen Kotaku reported that Sony was working on a new kind of console it would be a PlayStation 4 but with a significant boost to its specs not necessarily a new console generation but a mid-gen refresh in modern console gaming this was very unexpected before this point while you might see a slim model of a console with a new chipset few expected a revised slim console to ever come with a more powerful chipset than the original for many they assumed that this new ps4.5 was one of the AMD contracts and the NX would be the other contract but also many had forgotten that Microsoft likely had that Xbox One slim contract many believe that the Xbox One slim either didn't exist or just wasn't in production yet or AMD had more contracts that they hadn't announced yet it seemed unlikely that Microsoft wasn't working on its own mid-gen upgrade to the Xbox One to compete with Sony and what if Sony was working on a new PS4 slim that required a new chipset if anything this did suggest that AMD had more contracts that they just have not announced yet on April 1st Phil Spencer of Xbox said that Microsoft wasn't interested in doing a half step upgrade for a console kind of his exact words were I'm not a big fan of Xbox one and a half if we're going to move forward I want to move forward in big numbers he also said I don't know anything about any of the rumors that are out there but I can understand other team's motivations to do that for us our Box is doing well it performs its reliable the servers are doing well if we're going to go forward with anything like I said I want it to be a really substantial change for people an upgrade now many in the NX Community took this to mean that there was no mid-gen Xbox one they would simply be waiting for the Next Generation Now sure it could just be marketing talk but with that addition of our boxes doing well it seemed like Phil was more than content with the OG Xbox One this also suggested the possibility that the Xbox One slim didn't actually exist or was canceled I mean if Phil was happy with how the Xbox one was performing then maybe there was no reason for this on April 12th a user on neogaf going by the name Eakin had found that Microsoft was making a new wireless chip that was going through the SCC for approval this chip would likely be used in a new Xbox but it appeared as though it would be going in something similar to the existing Xbox not a mid-gen refresh given the timing on the ndas we knew of it was assumed that some new hardware might be announced at E3 there was also interestingly a reference to an entirely new Xbox other than the slim Model A more substantial upgrade that some believe to be a next-gen Xbox now none of this was confirmed by any means this was just a post on neogaf there were leaks and rumors all of the time but if this was true it suggested that the next few weeks could get pretty interesting a verified user on neogaf going by the name 10K released a leak that got a lot of attention now 10K had some credibility most of it was stemming from a verified status which just meant that a moderator on neogaf approved them as the real deal whatever that meant 10K said that while they could not guarantee all the information they had was accurate they would post a tier list of sorts on the information they were confident in they were most confident in the idea that the NX was well beyond the capabilities of a PS4 and possibly on par with this ps4.5 it would be a standard console with a controller although this controller would have a screen the controller could function as a handheld but only through the cloud it didn't have its own proper CPU and GPU 10K would detail some other things that weren't entirely relevant to the story but many in the community were not happy with this Cloud streaming idea not just because Cloud streaming wasn't really that popular it just seemed too unrealistic especially given the average inner net speeds in 2016. on April 19th The Verge picked up the report about that new wireless chip for the Xbox Tom Warren reported that apparently Microsoft was testing out a variety of new Xboxes just three days later AMD announced yet another custom semiconductor contract this time mentioning the game console industry specifically this was huge three contracts for game consoles releasing between 2016 and 2017. one for Sony one for Microsoft and the final one that would have to be for Nintendo maybe many assume that Nintendo needed another contract for their handheld but that probably just wasn't announced yet where the handheld would release after the console did Phil said no Xbox One in a half so unless Microsoft was developing a next-gen console and revealing it in the next few months there was no way that Nintendo wasn't getting this nothing had really come up about a PlayStation 4 slim using a new chipset and most assumed that the original PS4 would take the place of the inexpensive smaller cheaper alternative to this new ps4.5 on April 27th Brad Sam's a reliable Microsoft Insider had reported that an Xbox One slim was definitely going to be announced at E3 but he also presented the possibility that some new more significant Hardware would be announced at the show as well now this was confused using was Microsoft making a next-gen console right now or was Phil's statements just marketing hype the fate of the NX really relied on Microsoft's E3 conference whether they showed off two new consoles or just one and we just have to wait and see an article appeared on Yahoo finance that was originally posted on marketrealist.com it was about amd's first quarter earnings report and stated that AMD had won the contract for the NX however going through amd's first quarter reports there was no suggestion or even evidence that AMD had gotten the Nintendo contract the statement seemed to come from nowhere the article did not mention an exclusive scoop or leak or rumor it just stated that the AMD contract was announced was this some sort of unintentional leak or was it just a mistake in the article so everything about the community the speculation it all changed on May 15th Emily Rogers a respected investigator posted what she had heard about the annex wasn't some Powerhouse console coupled with some dedicated handheld device it was just one thing one machine and it wasn't going to match the power of this upcoming ps4.5 it wasn't even as powerful as the original PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One the report by The Wall Street Journal referencing these industry-leading chips was misunderstood these were industry leading by some definition but not because of their capabilities it was the fact that they were modern they were new and Nintendo was using them because they were focusing on low power consumption this chipset was not going to be provided by AMD and this was huge it suggested that every rumor reports piece of speculation over the past two years had been entirely Off the Mark if Rogers was correct if this chip was not made by AMD it would be made by Nvidia and it would be designed for low power consumption it would be a mobile chipset basically an Nvidia Shield this would be a handheld this was not what the community wanted to hear many dismissed this outright unlike the other leakers Rogers was not doing this anonymously and she was more well established than them as well generally when somebody was doing something like this for attention they would create an elaborate overly optimistic report on what the NX was you might see a few things to ground it back to Earth but usually the positives outweigh the negatives this report was not optimistic it was everything that people did not want for this device after this report released the community split in half forever some people joined team Nvidia or team Rogers as it was sometimes called others stayed on team AMD neither side had a ton of information to go off of all of this really did just rely on whether Microsoft was making a more powerful Xbox and they were just 10 days later Kotaku reported that Microsoft was working on an Xbox One slim which was going to be announced three we already knew this but they also claimed there was a mid-gen Xbox refresh team AMD maintained that either Kotaku was wrong that this project Scorpio didn't exist or the Xbox One slim would actually use the same chipset as the original or they just thought that AMD had even more contracts that were not announced yet The Verge would confirm this report but at the same time they added that the new Xbox One slim would support 4K video output something the original Xbox one could not do this meant that the Xbox One slim definitely had a new chipset on June 10th Andrew House CEO of Sony interactive entertainment confirmed that the company had a mid-gen refresh of the PlayStation 4 on the way two days later the Xbox One slim now called the Xbox One S leaked online The Verge had done a deep dive on this box and confirmed that 4K video support which meant that the Xbox One S might really be the second contract this box was leaked by reporters who claimed a mid-gen Xbox was coming in 2017. if they were right about the Xbox One S it was safe to assume they were right about this by this point team AMD was looking a bit silly if project Scorpio was announced which it seemed like it was going to be that would be it project Scorpio will be the next addition to the Xbox One family and it is ultimately the next step in delivering our vision for the future of gaming Beyond Generations AMD have three contracts and all three products were announced or at least referenced by the companies making them AMG had confirmed that both project Scorpio and the Xbox One S were using custom chipsets as well project Scorpio was not releasing before the NX and if the NX was using AMD chips they would have announced it beforehand across the entire gaming industry the expectation was that this device would run on AMD hardware and Rogers had the only credible report that claimed otherwise team AMD simply didn't accept this they said that the Xbox One S didn't count or even if it did AMD does have more contracts they just haven't announced them yet but this was all still speculation Nintendo had not confirmed anything about the NX Beyond its release date and the fact that it could play a game that the Wii U could already handle Nintendo had mentioned before that the NX was not going to be at E3 2016 which meant it was unlikely that we would get any more news but we did well so now you know your competitors uh you know talked about their forthcoming the Xbox at a new PlayStation how do you think the NX console will stack up to them you know for us it's not about specs it's not about teraflops it's not about the horse power of a particular system for us it's about the content Nintendo is a Content focused company we create entertainment that makes people smile so for us we're focused on bringing our best entertainment to both the Wii U as well as the NX in the future so for us whatever Microsoft and Sony are doing in terms of talking about new systems that's for them to fight out in that red ocean this was confirmation from the big man himself explicitly stated that this device would not be about specs it would not be about horsepower and generally when that's said by a company promoting its product it means it's not that powerful while the fighting didn't stop here because there was another way to take this statement team AMD believed Reggie was talking about the NX in comparison to the mid-gen consoles alls this really said was that the NX wouldn't be as powerful as these were but clearly the evidence was shifting in team Infinity's favor on July 6th a new patent was made public by Nintendo it detailed a new vibration system that seemed to work in coordination with sounds or something there wasn't much else to go off of the focus here was mostly on the fact that this device had four face buttons any new game announcements really didn't seem to give a good indication of the console's hardware Just Dance 2017's announcement told us nothing since the game was still releasing on the original Wii there was no proof on either side and everybody just assumed they Things based on publicly available information which leaks seemed to align best with your views but this would change on July 26th hi everyone I'm Richard and finally we can provide information on the upcoming Nintendo NX console coming in March 2017. now hold on to your hats here because NX may not be quite the machine you're expecting this new hardware was not a game console it was a handheld even though it was a handheld it could still connect to a TV through an HDMI output by the nature of being a portable device it couldn't perform at the same level as the other consoles on the market those who had never taken part in any of these rumors were just upset that Nintendo would be trying yet again to deliver an underpowered gimmick machine the most common sentiment was that this would be a disaster however team AMD just didn't believe it some accused digital Foundry of taking a guess based on Roger's reports of following the team and video community and taking these findings and presenting them as fact team AMD had also pointed out that if digital Foundry was right then the walls Journal must be wrong so it didn't help team AMD when the very next day the same journalist who wrote The Wall Street Journal reports confirmed digital foundries leak this was a massive blow to team AMD all of the existing evidence that supported a powerful NX had suddenly disappeared and for reasons I still don't fully understand team AMD persisted after this point most leaks credible or even Anonymous seem to align with Team Nvidia the form factor was this odd tablet with weird controllers that could detach by August 22nd reports were coming in that Sony was actually planning two new hardware announcements in the near future one would be the PlayStation 4 Pro one would be the PlayStation 4 slim this gave team AMD a bit of Hope if Sony was announcing a PlayStation 4 slim with a custom semiconductor chip the Atlanta AMD might have more than three contracts that they simply haven't announced yet and the PS4 slim did not have the new chipset on September 15th it was noticed in a trademark filing for the game Resident Evil 7 that cartridges was listed as one of the distribution methods now this was interesting we knew that the NX was likely using cartridges and this suggested that Resident Evil 7 would run on the NX many debated on whether a game like this could even run on the NX maybe this was a more powerful device than we expected however very quickly within a few minutes the community went back through other Capcom filings and found mentions of cartridges for games years before the NX was even in the conversation this was just a trademark filing it didn't mean anything this was pretty much how all of September went a publisher would make a statement and it would be misconstrued by team AMD to fit this bizarre narrative team AMD seemed to believe that Nintendo themselves were just providing misinformation to digital Foundry in Wall Street Journal to throw people off from what they were really working on but we wouldn't have have to argue for much longer by October tensions were at their Peak since everybody had decided what side they were on the main rumors were regarding the name of the console which was also contentious the NX was never going to be the console's name but we also assumed Nintendo would not continue with the Wii branding Fusion had seemed to drop off the face of the Earth at the moment the popular pick was Nintendo Duo by mid-october we started to hear new kinds of rumors rumors that the NX was going to be revealed this could be potentially within a week or so and immediately more rumors began to sprout up with almost every single one having no validity and finally on October 19th Nintendo showed us this image the NX will be revealed the next morning the next day one side would be right and the other side would be completely embarrassed [Music] yeah I don't know why I had so much build up there uh it's the Nintendo switch again huge thanks to incogni for sponsoring this video the first hundred people to use the code knowledgehusk in the link in
