[Music] if you spent your 20s and your 30s drinking whiskey and fist fighting every day by the time you're in your 40s you're probably ready for a change that's the way i feel about my feet i've worked doing concrete construction and building cabins for the last 25 years and my feet have really taken a beating in boots that don't fit right five months ago i reached out to nick's boots out of spokane washington they're a handmade boot company now i've been aware of this company for years reading things on the internet watching youtube reviews there's a lot of folks out there that are convinced nix builds the highest quality work boot that you can buy the thickest leather the best construction the best fit the most comfort that's what i really wanted i've never had a boot that i've been totally satisfied with my deal with nick's has been very simple i reached out to nix and said i have this youtube channel with a large amount of subscribers i'm very interested in a real set of boots that are really gonna fit and really be comfortable if you're willing to make me a set of boots i will share that experience through a video on this channel to be crystal clear this is not a commercial for nick's boots i don't need a free set of boots i could just buy a set of boots and never tell anybody what i have or why i bought it but when you see companies like this that are building the real thing and they're cutting no corners whatsoever i just want to bring attention to that i think that's fantastic today i'm going to take you guys through that whole process of what it was like to deal with nick's boots we're going to take a really good look at their boots we're going to take a look at the fit process if that's the way you want to go we're also going to tear apart another american-made boot i'm going to show you guys the difference between a mass-produced boot and one of the finest boots you're ever going to find stay tuned now you can get on nick's website and order a pair of boots in almost any configuration of leather and sole material that you want now personally my biggest problem has always been fit finding a boot that actually fits the shape of my foot so i opted for the nyx try on boot process after a couple weeks they sent me out a set of test fit boots the whole idea is you put them on you lace them up nice and snug you wear them 20 minutes and then you phone in and have a phone consultation with one of their fitters then you can tell them where it's too tight where it's too loose what what your thoughts are from that they make a few notes and then that's what they build a custom set of boots from now a lot of people don't have any issues with the fit of a boot what they have issues with is the durability if what you want is the best quality boot but you don't generally have problems with fit you just order a set of their stock boots so my next boots came today in the mail truth be told i've already taken these out of the box and laced them up when the mail came i didn't have my camera handy so uh i wasn't gonna wait i had to try them on right especially love this rough out leather that is just just really nice and take a look at the stitching on the toe here it's like rope it's so thick it is just unbelievably heavy stitching you guys ever been in like a tandy leather just a smell of leather the boot is all leather other than the stitching and the sole like this heel stack is nothing but leather this midsole looks like one piece of leather i can't see any semen if it is it's literally the thickest piece of leather i've ever seen here's the laces that come with good solid heavy duty leather now i gotta say i love the look of these boots but i'm really not into the fashion end of things i want a durable boot and the first thing you'll notice when looking over these nyx boots is the leather it actually reminds me of a saddlery to be honest it reminds me attack like bridles and saddles and harnesses the leather is so thick and the stitching is heavy and it's just a different level of boot that being said i've always heard too that these things are brutal to break in one thing i'd like to mention too is i've never owned a set of boots that had that much of a heel to it an elevated heel like that so that was something that i was a bit apprehensive about but actually once i got the boots once i put them on walked around for just a minute i was surprised how very little i noticed that heel the boots felt right that the heel felt right which i was really surprised about along those same lines these boots have a very pronounced arch support that did take me the first few days to get used to well now i have to go through the break-in process they feel good putting them right on but they also feel incredibly um they're strong they're not a floppy boot they're very very stiff in areas and i think they're going to take quite a lot to break in we'll find out now during the break-in period i did a whole bunch of motorcycle riding brook and i also tore down a barn on her property now a lot of people will buy a set of nicks because of the way that they look and they're a really cool looking boot but i have no fashion sense whatsoever i just want a solid boot so i wore these boots while i was tearing this barn down i wore them while i was setting up a sawmill i wore them building an outhouse in the upper peninsula and fishing i really wanted to put in a good solid month on these things before i made any comment so one of the problems i've always had with boots and the reason i reached out to nicks is i get a set of boots and i can't stand the way the boot actually fits or worse yet i find a boot that fits okay but it doesn't last any amount of time this is a chippewa boot i bought this one boot off ebates i had to show you guys what's inside one of these boots and why i'm just not gonna pay the money for anything like this again i mean first off you take a look at it it's a good looking boot got a lot of really nice hang tags says chippewa the best by far now i had a pair of these that came apart what i found out was that what they build these boots out of is a joke and this is a two hundred dollar set of boots and once you actually dive in and see what's inside a boot like this it's an insult i'm just gonna take this sucker and cut it apart you see that in case you guys don't know what this colorful garbage is it's carpet padding anybody that's ever laid carpet could spot that a mile away the cushion inside a 200 set of boots is literally 11 cents worth of carpet padding if that don't make you sick here's the shank in the boot like it's a piece of fiberglass the shank is actually held in here's a big dab of hot glue on the chipper was i had before these stitches are what failed these stitches popped and then the top comes loose from the welt and of course the welt is what holds it down to the sole even when you get down here to the sole this piece of leather here this actually isn't leather at all it's some kind of fiber product this is some kind of cardboard fiber stuff i don't know of any leather whatsoever that you can just tear i mean this this is it's made to look like leather the color makes you think that it's supposed to be leather where the nyx boot has like three quarters of an inch of stacked leather that your foot will eventually cushion itself into and support your foot the way your foot is actually shaped these things they've got a uh they've got a cheap insole let's see what's inside this boot here's what the chippewa boot looks like completely inside out you can feel there's a plastic toe stiffener down here in the end it makes the shape of the toe so there's what the toe would look like here's this piece of plastic stiffener the inside of the toe on the knicks it's a leather on the inside so this is the liner that goes in the heel area honestly i don't even know what it is but this is your heel and then again that same same kind of kind of plastic material to form the heel of the boot you know with the nicks in the heel it's a big heavy duty thick piece of i think it's oak tan leather that forms the heel itself and then the front of it it's all leather and in the vamp like the lining inside the front it's leather too this insole this is the actual sole of the shoe this is what that foam insert goes over top of and this thing is made out of some kind of a cardboard it's it's not leather although i think they want you to assume it is by the color that they dyed it kind of a pink color like a veg tan leather it's not leather it's it's paper it's cardboard so you get some plastic you get some cardboard you get some carpet pad this two dollar insole and then underneath it's this just yard sale of garbage now if that's what you were looking at in the store and it had a 200 price tag on it what would you think at that point i would turn around and look for something else now there's a channel on youtube it's run by a guy named weston and it's called rose anvil now what weston does is he'll take a set of boots and cut them in half on a bandsaw and show you as the consumer what you're actually buying what's actually inside the boots he did a review on a knicks builder pro and was generous enough to let me use some of the still images i'll leave a link down below so you can pop on over and check out his reviews i think they're fascinating because they really show you what's going on inside the boots now nick's boots also has a youtube channel and they kind of deep dive into their company and how they go about making boots and that's also a fascinating channel so i'm gonna leave a link for those guys too having seen what's inside of a pair of competitors boots and then taking a look at what's inside of a pair of knicks boots i don't think there's any comparison to be made at all i for one can't justify spending my money to buy an inferior product when i can get something that's made as well as it can possibly be made once you actually tear a boot like that apart and you see what is inside and what you've spent your hard earned money for you feel like you got screwed and i never want to buy another set of boots where i feel like i got screwed on the deal so if you guys have watched this channel before you know i'm pretty much a cheapskate i drive old vehicles with high miles i never pay much for them i like to buy things used flea markets and yard sales and for a lot of things in my life i really feel like good enough is good enough but when it comes to what i'm putting on my feet nowadays the cumulative effect of years and years of wearing boots that sort of fit and buying those boots because it was the only option that was close at the time i needed boots and of course the fact that the price of a lot of these boots isn't justified by the construction i'm just ready for something else i'm ready to try something different in my life my feet are not as happy as they were when i was 25 years old i need a boot that's got a lot of support i need a boot that's going to fit my foot and the way my foot is shaped and just as important as that i need a boot that's going to last a long time i don't want to go out six months from now and we'll do this whole thing over looking for a boot that sort of fits my foot and hoping i made a better decision than i made last time because years and years of buying a boot off the shelf that's just okay well it's not okay anymore but a lot of people will look at a boot like this and this is a 500 plus dollar boot and they think man there's no way i would ever spend 500 bucks for boots but that's not true everybody spends 500 bucks for boots you actually spend thousands of dollars on footwear over the course of your life do you want to spend 200 bucks and buy a jump pair of boots like we cut apart and then a year later buy another junk pair of boots like that or six months later well at that point you're up to 400 bucks and you've got junk twice so the argument is really not i i can't spend 500 bucks on boots the only true argument would be i can't spend 500 bucks on boots right now you know it's a lot of money to drop at one point in time on a set of footwear but the truth is you are going to spend 500 bucks on boots whether you spend that 500 bucks over the course of six years or whether you spend that 500 bucks right off the bat on a set of boots like this you're gonna spend that money here's the nyx boots brand new out of the box and here's what the nyx boots look like after wearing them for a month i have to say that rough out leather is pretty impressive it doesn't get scratched it just kind of everything rolls off it you know i've heard it said a lot of times before that knicks boots are an absolute monster to break in and that's totally true what i think is the best way to describe it is they're very honest you know boot like this it doesn't have any gore-tex doesn't have any insulation doesn't have any padding so when you lace them up a little bit tight they're a little bit tight when you lace them up a little bit loose they're a little bit loose the only padding that's in this boot is the sock that you happen to be wearing what i learned about fit dealing with nyx was simple you really want to start out with a snug fitting boot and the reason is it's just a leather boot it's the break-in period is going to be much more like a glove because there's no padding in there to take up any of the movement of the muscles and bones in your foot so if you start with a boot that feels roomy by the time it's broken in and the leather stretched out to fit your foot you might have more room than what you need when you're wearing them you're going to stretch them when i got these boots they were they fit quite well and the more i wore them the more i could tell that they were stretching my foot was stretching them out and i actually ended up cutting a veg tan leather insole and putting it in there to take up some space that's not nick's fault that was my fault they sent me a pair of 13 to try on say what do you think of these not knowing what that break-in process was going to be like i said you know i'd like a little more room in the toe maybe go up the next size the 13 and a half as opposed to a 13. so when they made me in my boot these boots are 13 and a half and they fit good right out of the box and after i wore them for a while they had more room than they needed you know what it's like to take a flannel shirt that's too small and you put it on right and you go to flex your shoulders and you feel it just bind with a set of all leather boots like this it's very much the same thing that final break in is what really makes that boot the perfect fit it your foot is the form i ordered a 13 and a half double e but in hindsight i think a 13 single e would have been a better choice because i had no idea what this process was going to be like breaking these boots in it's going to take you at least a month to break them in to where you really understand what you have i can honestly say i've never bought a set of boots in my life where i felt like i got my money's worth either i got a garbagey fit or i got a boot that didn't last very long and a lot of times i got both of those the whole idea of knicks and my experience with them i think it's the way to go you know the big question here is why why do i want to do a video about a boot i've been hanging on the footage for five months and piecing together this whole process just to show you guys what it's like to deal with these guys because i believe in what they're doing i absolutely do not need a free set of boots i could just buy a set of boots never say anything to anybody about it just going with my life but when you find an american company that is really focused on delivering the real thing i'm just a fan i think that is amazing so when dealing with next this is the boot that they built for me it's an eight inch builder pro it's got honey vibram soles rough out leather i've got a deal with nyx where if you order through the link below you can get 10 percent off a boot similar to this there's a couple different options for height couple different options for sole but if you want to deal with nicks and you want to get the best boot that you can if you use the link below and get a similar boot to this you're going to get 10 off and to be crystal clear i get no kickback i get no commission i've got no affiliate program i don't get a dime from these guys but you're going gonna get a great set of boots thank you guys so much for watching bush radical my name is dave whipple be radical eh see you soon
