football ah interception oh it is when a man throws a ball into the sky and then a man who is not wearing the similar uniform is like bounce around and catches it and then runs with the egg down the grass we win the game he's got the best nothing always has to be the number one laughable there is no question a very good one would be if Assam and the back quarter is running around he's got the egg and he's like what what what what what what Antony throws in the sky and in a flamingo is coming you know and then he knocks it and then the ball is like and then it drops and then a man is here who is sleeping he's just sleeping he has been making a nap and then he makes an awake wisdom he has the egg and then he runs down yup there's nothing like a big time interception [Applause] we picked through a pack of pics to find the 10 best in NFL history there's no shortage of big-time interceptions God's sake be smart what a great play but it's the combination of big plays by big players in big moments that help create this list that's one of those plays were everything just shifts it's Super Bowl it was a defining play it's so stunning on so many levels that changed the whole course animal middle of the game single most influential play by a mile in Super Bowl history you are happy skipping ball time what begins a dynasty that was the kind of play that changes games I think that to be an important moment it has to be at an important time Steelers owner Art Rooney hadn't had all that much to cheer about before 1974 well at that point the Steelers were not quite yet to Steel Curtain blue-collar physical tough and that play was very representative of a city that was looking for its place in the football world after being bad for so long the steel is brought in Bradshaw and Terry and their defense led them against the favorite Vikings in Super Bowl 9 now blunt hall-of-famer badass Oh Mel Blount Super Bowl 9 may nobody remembers that Super Bowl Super Bowl 9 was a defensive struggle but Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings offense looked to take control of the game's first touchdown his dealers defense had other ideas the Vikings were actually I think moving in to take the lead in the game you do know you're delivering not only a hit but a message they were a team built on defense it's the kind of play by the way that today would be penalized first thing I thought it was like huh I could do that back then obviously the message became even stronger when the ball popped in the air right to Mel Blount Blount picked it off and that was all she wrote they never got close again there are so many different clips that you could take from that Steel Curtain defense and that's the one I would probably roll every time Pittsburgh took control of the game and the entire decade a big play an important play a top-ten play has got to come in a big moment that game was a true statement game that changed the NFL landscape in 1974 [Music] counting down the NFL's top interceptions is the grilling business [Applause] but here are a gaggle of pics that didn't make our cornucopia of aerial thievery Stinkum is now outlawed in the NFL so Oakland's Lester Hayes drops from our list faz does each of his thirteen stickum enhanced interceptions in 1980 with ranking this dislike Asama jury or who like a group of children another Raider who didn't make our countdown was Mike Davis whose game saving play off pick is forever reviled in Cleveland Mike Davis should not be omitted that was an unbelievable play by a guy who has really bad hands but the person who caught our number dime interception has great hands or at least one great hand that was a great play great play and at the time you know that's Peyton Manning you know that's what Peyton Manning was Peyton Peyton Peyton was Peyton but in this 2007 game Cromartie made Manning wish he was someone else grabbing two picks before registering our number nine interception for whatever reason the Chargers boys played paid Manning very well he threw six interceptions Cromartie had three this one was pretty much the most unbelievable one manning looted down the sideline and it's gonna be [Music] [Applause] obviously the ball was underthrown because there was tremendous pressure by shawn merriman right Manning's field he couldn't step into his throw it was just an unbelievable interception colmar t's athletic move is similar to another of legendary catch that was the obj of the defense the best way to compare and to new Cromartie's catch to Odell Beckham's catch is to remember the Odell Beckham was the intended receiver guys you know guys aren't supposed to go up and get the ball off the rim like that I mean as a reason why D B's Rd B's because they can't catch and for him to go back and catch it like that makes me question whether they should have been a receiver another while Cromartie's pick was outstanding the circumstances surrounding the interception were ordinary I don't remember the game that's on your top 10 it's gotta be the Super Bowl it's got to be in a huge moment and it's got to be career-defining it was aesthetically beautiful and for a purist just seeing that play that was just one of those plays where you just say wow that to me is still one of the best interceptions I ever saw [Music] there's only a handful of players in history you can say my highlights look different from everybody else's highlights and Troy Polamalu is one of those guys there's a lot to love about Troy Polamalu the attitude the closing speed and of course the hair he took his hair seriously way too seriously man how did this guy play with all on-air bouncing around I'm just jealous not everyone can that Paul Amato is flowing locks or either of the two picks which put him on our ledger if you have one of those on your resume at the end of your career that's unbelievable but he's got two in the opening week of the 2009 season and Polamalu turn to Kerry Collins pass into an all-time classic interception he's back to pass again [Music] by [Applause] [Music] if I remember correctly Polamalu did one of these [Applause] to be able to go up and just he used every inch of that 510 he did it this was one arm he could have he could have multitasking and it's against Kenny Britt who's eight foot three or something Kenny Britt is trying to push off to get separation and Polamalu still makes the play he push you too that type of situation where you're tracking the ball like that's that's hard to do the other one was the way more impressive one a year earlier against San Diego Polamalu made another spectacular steal throws it over the middle of the field the passage even fooled out faked out Jim Nance on the broadcast [Applause] interception he thought it was incomplete you look at it there's just that much I mean just the top of his glove you can see worn up underneath the ball to make the end of session not only did he get his hand under it he scoops it up and instead of laying there gets up and gets about 15 20 yards after that it was the kind of thing watching it you knew you couldn't do that the way he sort of all in one movement planted and then left into the air it just seemed like that was not a human move good things happen when you get to the football and that's how those both those interceptions happen it's like he's able to get to the football yeah BAM you know there was a to phenomenal place like interception like like the transformer like we have Megatron we have the Gobots the interception cons what did you say normally when you're talking Megatron you're talking unbelievable touchdowns but while Calvin Johnson was a touchdown machine the man known as Megatron cooking transform every pass into a score some of the best pics were supposed to go to the man in the Motor City [Music] [Applause] Brent Grimes hands and athleticism were pretty impressive but not quite as good as the man with the next interception on our list in the 2000 visional playoffs the Giants took an early lead on the Eagles you can even mention the spot a football game he said the dried in a Kobe's right [Music] they finally get a little momentum they're moving the ball a bit they got to drive going like okay cool when the Eagles finally made some noise [Applause] the Giants blew their horn waves a little over sound drop straight back Giants on a blitz damn hit as he throws sweet right [Applause] it looks like it's just going to be a regular old pass breakup [Applause] first of all I chase in Sehorn I mean he it was like an oopsie Daisy interception cuz you know she's kicking his feet he's had got his hands and stuff flailing all over the place and then also had no yeah he's got a ball in his hands and he's running it for six [Music] see horn-like tips it falling down rolls over does his laundry has a cup of coffee and then gets up and somehow Corral's it and takes it any late what the hell just happened this plays great because lik if he just caught it the old-fashioned way he would have been down right there but instead he's like tipping it while he's getting up it was like a volleyball play turned into a football play turned into a pick six it was amazing he does one of these he flips like this and set he actually kind of bumps or sets the ball up to himself catches it gets up and scores a touchdown and the reason why I remember it so well it's a divisional playoff game it's against the Eagles and it was kind of the nail in the coffin for Philadelphia that day it just warms my soul for the the moment sure that's great to propel them but the interception itself absolutely not those not impressive [Applause] magic gun rolling around why didn't you bring up runned a barber freaking running 92 yards down and close the vet cheese this was it the Eagles were surely headed to the Super Bowl [Music] all right so it's the last game in the vet and the Eagles look good but the kicker the cherry on top of the sundae that nobody ever got to eat was the Tampa couldn't play in the cold and it was cold that day this Bucs team doesn't look the least bit cold [Applause] the Bucs were hot but the Eagles were driving to get back in it brings one example to go make that dropping and you could just see him smiling the whole way down [Music] and the more he smiled the more I wanted to just punch my television screen this is how I watch that play I couldn't believe it it was so awful to watch and then I forever hated the barbers just I imagine them you know what the outburst of emotion must have been I remember my heart - going from here all the way down to my feet and just sitting there just going I cannot believe that that just happened that is the last memory of the vet in my head and that's never going to change and we're still here years and years later and that is all I can think about we know that was devastating because it was the only time that the Eagles home crowd did not boo them coming off the field after a playoff defeat the only sound was these muffled steps as thousands of people just walked out of the vet for the last time as we boogie our way through our countdown let's see how our dance card of the NFL's top interceptions looks so far one picked it off and that was all she rode number nine as the crow flies oh he just kind of went wow that's pretty good number eight he was always around the ball you could just see him smiling the whole way down [Music] [Applause] the coolest interception ever [Music] branches back the path brother sideline effective [Music] old man Willie Willie old man Willie and I think of a legend who door had been in the NFL for 13 years getting that signature moment makes me a mortal he was a quick out - Sammy white the ball was thrown too far to the inside my guess is if he was here explaining it he would tell you that he read the quarterback strap and he knew what the throw was going to be this how old man Willie explains it it says hey I know what they're running here kind of cover me the the fact that he's like yeah okay I got this - just I don't know look at cover my guy in case he gets loose I'm just gonna go pick this off and win the Super Bowl basically it's cool theater even cooler was the slow-motion shot by NFL film cinematographer Ernie Ernst the shot so iconic its NFL Films you get the faces like you know and you're all in absolutely the slowest slow-motion you ever see your life and the emotion in his eyes and in his face watching it on NFL Films was one of the greatest days I'll ever remember in NFL history this shot if you look at it really close he kind of resembles Lionel Richie [Music] come on put it in your head there's just so many things happening on that play for me at least one of my favorite NFL Films highlights ever it was a glorious moment for Willie Brown not so much for the man who threw the interception for Fran Tarkenton a porphyrin target the men I always wonder what what does Fran Tarkenton think he's going to do what he throws that s just a shame for a great great player it is the ugliest little throw into the flat and the easiest pick six I've ever seen except for all the other ones on this list after a decade of near misses Brown spit clinched the Raiders first Super Bowl win that tick I used to like to say take your tape off it was time to take your tape off after that pick you have the call of that game dandy Don Meredith turn out the lights the party's over hearing Don Meredith just trample over the call a guy was just so hysterical to me fifteen years really a Super Bowl touchdown look at the raiders cod whole squad is going over there and when he made that play it was like so perfect he got his reward [Applause] it didn't even matter that it was the Raiders or anything else this should be number one Bar None they all pale in comparison because there was nothing greater than really sable and the super-slow-motion highlight for all time of Willie Brown so that would be in my opinion the greatest interception ever Harris's walk off a good one he's gonna call I can Hertz come on I gotta go Matt Hasselbeck let a late comeback that pushed the 2003 NFC wild-card game to overtime but as the teams met at mid field before the extra period Hasselbeck set the stage for our number 4 interception [Music] this is the playroom Hasselbeck is that the coin flip we're gonna take the ball and we're gonna score how about that that's fair policies and we're gonna take down and score and get to the next round of the playoffs but al Harris had something to say about that al Harris shut down Matt Hasselbeck lavato with a single jump trout [Applause] [Applause] pretty soon after that interception he had the hand in the air and knew that they were moving on so it was the Seahawks second possession of the overtime it was a sideline pass and you know as well as anybody it's gotta have a little extra muster on that one didn't have any condiment on it al Harris literally sat there on that out route just sat waited for Matt to deliver the ball Oh oopsy-daisy too much hassle on that back did you anticipate it and then when you had it did you know you had the endzone oh yeah yeah yeah it's like that DB ESP [Applause] and six cents led to a pick six six points and buh-bye Seahawks big 31 stepped up [Applause] Maris's heroics at Hasselbeck's hooks burg handily placed this walk-off interception at the four spot but does it hearken to be higher it's only number four only number four Wow I mean that that was made even bigger because Matt Hasselbeck in the coin flip honestly I don't think al Harris is on this list without Matt Hasselbeck saying those words because I think it's a very underrated play considering when it happened and the fact that it was a game-winning walk off the field pick six [Applause] usually when you think Green Bay and pick six like how is Brett Farve not involved in this play in 2009 Tracy Porter had an interception to propel the Saints to the Super Bowl [Applause] all sorts of time mr. Tracy Porter seconds remaining his interception set up the game-winning field goal [Music] so why isn't it on the list it wasn't even quarters best pick that postseason [Music] oh my god if there was ever a play that I think encapsulate s-- Peyton Manning's career it was Tracy Porter's interception against the Colts Manning's our football royalty in New Orleans Archie Manning that the lovable sad sacks in the 1970s after the 2009 season the Saints buried a trip to Super Bowl for a fool [Music] you're going to my [Applause] many said the Saints didn't have a prayer against the favorite colors [Music] [Applause] [Music] New Orleans would have to deal with Peyton Manning one of the all-time greats and wide receiver Reggie Wayne who was making catch after catch against Saints cornerback Tracy fore [Music] Manning led the Colts to an early 1713 advantage but the Saints were leading by a slim margin in the fourth quarter second and goal from the two [Music] Manning would have a chance to lead a fourth-quarter comeback you know I like to look at myself as a paid Manning truther that I can see through the the noise and kind of realize it paid Manning's a great quarterback but when it comes to the playoffs when it comes to the big moment he's not always the guy who will come through with the game on the line Manning look for Reggie Wayne who had been beating Tracy Porter all night [Music] hey what's the song and here it was Peyton Manning in his moment this was a chance for him to go on the national stage stare down Drew Brees and that Saints team and say you know what I am the best quarterback to ever play it's when Peyton's like okay few minutes left I'm just gonna drive down and win the game and he had a nice Drive going this is one where everyone thought Peyton Manning was gonna be drew Brees in a Super Bowl Peyton Manning's gonna leave this last minute drive against the stop now there it is [Music] [Applause] it's Tracy Porter again he's right Tracy Porter running down the field as they all right I just wanted a damn Super Bowl you know and everyone's like oh cuz you knew the supers they won the Super Bowl [Applause] I don't even think Peyton Manning expected him to be there like he was just he cut the root off Reggie Wayne's coming across and it's it's he'd like he didn't see him tips right on it and it reacts it goes underneath trace heat border like why did I even doubt why did I think that there was gonna be any other ending if you were not a Colts fan I think everybody was rooting for New Orleans it was such a huge win for the city of New Orleans I don't think that if I ever saw it in a movie that I wouldn't believe it three minutes to go look at the st. sideline you can imagine what it's like that of the French Quarter New Orleans needed this like they needed this Super Bowl win and so when Tracy Porter grabbed that ball and ran it back for like 70 yards whatever it was I just remember being like oh this is good the football gods are smiling a New Orleans right now if I was happy about that Manning eventually cemented his legacy with a second Super Bowl title but the Saints first Lombardi Trophy looms large in NFL history the team's football woes and the city's recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina made the moment that much sweeter think about what the city of New Orleans went through he wasn't just playing with 53 guys on his back he was playing with an entire city an entire state on his back and what he was able to do to get that title for New Orleans it's just such a special time for New Orleans that team and Tracy for Tracy Porter's number one I think it's probably like the most perfect sports moment [Music] making your mark in the Super Bowl helps you make this list linebacker Chuck Holly had two interceptions for the Cowboys in Super Bowl five it's not often you see a linebacker with the athleticism to make interceptions especially not one as huge as the Steelers James Harrison but James Harrison defies expectations his picks and returns in the regular season are impressive but not as amazing as what he did on the game's biggest stage number treatment exception of all-time kerosene goes 100 [Music] Raymond James Stadium the site of Super Bowl 43 in Super Bowl 43 the Redbirds were in the red zone ready to take the lead at the end of the first half I was pulling for Arizona I mean that game was over if they score I thought that game would have been over 18 seconds left of the second quarter first and goal Arizona worst case in here worst case scenario we get some points on the board something happens in a half this is a positive thing obviously there's like nothing's gonna go the other direction Kurt just don't throw an interception just don't just do the right thing just play it safe he kills the quarterback that's his job and all of a sudden he drops back in coverage viewers show blitz he throws the past and it's still the longest return or the longest play in Super Bowl history 100 yards that was to me that's the game-winning play Arizona's scoring there you remember Bo Jackson on tech mobile but Bo kind of did this back and forth across the field you couldn't tackle all you got to do is go like this James Harrison did that but straight ahead Harrison's interception changed the course of the game giving the Steelers the lead and his points would ultimately be the margin of victory if Harrison had been tackled the half would have been over leaving no chance for Pittsburgh to score when Harrison picks it off they immediately go into let's take into the house mode a hundred yards away and then Harrison picks it off and you're like all right somebody get them and then the most impressive thing after the big fella catches the ball is the run the James Harrison interception is sweet because he read the play drop to the zone and then time's running out as he's running down the field and like oh my god is he gonna make it I still thought they were gonna catch him like seven different times I feel like all right someone's gonna catch him right and he just kept running and all of a sudden he jumps over somebody and he has a chance to score and all I remember is Larry Fitzgerald running down the sideline and I'm thinking he's gonna tackle him but come on come on come on and then Larry Fitzgerald is just running you're like Larry what he's get him he's running out of gas it's like oh dude is this guy gonna actually make it or he's gonna pass out [Music] I've never seen anything crazier than Harrison going house 100 yards the guy's a monster I mean that Hey Godzilla's my favorite oh no James Harrison Oh No and then just I don't think he got it for three minutes right he was completely dead on the on the ground there it really was as far as just one sheer moment in civil history it was the most memorable effort that will never I don't think that'll ever be topped as a Super Bowl moment and the impact that it happened I mean that to me is maybe the biggest interception of all time because Super Bowl that's a 14-point swing I don't even know that's possible it was huge it was great James Harrison's is not the number one I can't wait to hear what number one was because that play by James Harrison right before the half I had time in the Superbowl is one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history [Music] wait a pan this tumbled let's come up that bit though for every great interception that that was just sensational sensational individual effort there is a frustrating near-miss let's revisit our countdown so far it's the kind of play by the way that today would be penalized that was not a human move watching it you knew you couldn't do that just like a volleyball play turned into a football play turned into a pick six it was amazing Barker consti this is how I watched that play by Brown Senior Bowl in my opinion the greatest interception ever before Harris hits the ball is scores DB ESP number three I think it's fine like the most perfect sports moment number two Harrison tramples Tokyo I've never seen anything crazier than Harrison going house [Music] the Malcolm Butler interception will forever be one of the greatest plays in football Patriots and super ball history with 26 seconds to play in Super Bowl xlix Seattle trail by fool that had the ball second available from the Patriots wrong yard line a game-winning touchdown seemed eminent - intercepted a cocoon that's a such an unbelievable story [Applause] the odds are just infinitesimal it's gotta be the dumbest cause it's Super Bowl history I can't believe what I just saw I see Russell Wilson go back to throw it and I'm thinking well this is odd in one moment with one improbable play Patriots fans went from death row to the Playboy Mansion and I just remember Pete Carroll's face just this sort of like blank like what what what just happened just to the heart of every Seahawks fan [Music] [Applause] just as phenomenal and individual play in every way that you'll ever see Malcolm Butler who is Malcolm Butler there was so many sports writers going on Wikipedia trying to figure out who the heck he was talk about Malcolm Butler let's talk about though dude came from nowhere totally working at a West Alabama a free-agent Western Alabama DTC school three years before that it was in Community College yeah five years before that he was a woman not true lot of people don't know that not sure it was a woman true this is what happens the fifth cornerback on the depth chart gets sent in the last second go in there in the goal line set go in and he makes the biggest play a heck of a play to an awesome play I think it was right place right time we heard later that day he had been beaten on that same play in practice Malcom Butler had played maybe a hundred snaps all year long for him to make that recognition particularly when he was a backup player for him to do that in that situation is unbelievable it was a phenomenal interception on its own right but everybody will talk about the play call why I should say not just like take the ball and run with the legs why did you call that play why why Pete Carroll but you've got Marshawn Lynch like right there you've got Marshawn Lynch right there you've got a guy that's been born unstoppable in this part of the field I can't believe the call I guarantee that they believed when they called that play that that was going to be a walk in touch down they thought it would be simple we're gonna make this throw we're gonna win we'll see you later they threw that place 66 times in the NFL that season there were zero interceptions until that moment and Malcolm Butler knew what the play was going to be because when the Seahawks went to three wide receivers out of a goal line set he knew that's going to be a pass because they would only run the ball out of two wide receivers it might have been a stupid play call but if he didn't know it was coming it would have been a stupid play call because that's a touchdown Malcolm Butler plays number one and it's not even close and there's no play like it in the history of the Super Bowl to read the play break on it and make a very difficult interception to seal the deal and one of the best Super Bowls ever played you don't know that you can get a much better interception than that are you kidding me I've been on a hard sell with my wife for months now that when we have a second child we should name it Malcolm Butler and I think she's gonna let me have my way [Music]
